Book Description
Volume 1: Econometric General Equilibrium Modeling presents an econometric approach to general equilibrium modeling of the impact of economic policies. Earlier approaches were based on the "calibration" of general equilibrium models to a single data point. The obvious disadvantage of calibration is that it requires highly restrictive assumptions about technology and preferences, such as fixed input-output coefficients. These assumptions are contradicted by the massive evidence of energy conservation in response to higher world energy prices, beginning in 1973. The econometric approach to general equilibrium modeling successfully freed economic policy analysis from the straitjacket imposed by calibration.
As a consequence of changes in energy prices and new environmental policies, a wealth of historical experience has accumulated over the past two decades. Interpreted within the framework of the neoclassical theory of economic growth, this experience provides essential guidelines for future policy formation. Volume 2: Energy, the Environment, and Economic Growth presents a new econometric general equilibrium model of the United States that captures the dynamic mechanisms underlying growth trends and responses to energy and environmental policies. Jorgenson uses the model to analyze the impacts of environmental regulations on US economic growth and tax policies for controlling US emissions of carbon dioxide.

Book Description
You know that wonderful feeling you get when you accomplish a task you've been avoiding, delaying, or tiptoeing around? Wouldn't it be great to have that feeling every day? Now can show you how. This simple but inspiring book reminds us that there are countless little acts that we can accomplish every day-little lingering things that we can banish from our minds, making room for the more important stuff. For example:o Consolidate the ketchup bottles, now.o Send those thank-you notes, now. It's never too late.o Get three competitive bids on your car insurance, now.o Put loose pictures in a photo album, now.o Fierce competition among retailers has made nearly everything returnable. If you don't like the blouse/skirt/couch, return it now. (The swimsuit, you're stuck with.)With glints of sly humor, clever illustrations, and surprising insight, Now reminds us that what we accomplish needn't be earth shattering in scope or life altering in importance. The beauty of "now" is simple. Now removes nagging concerns from your consciousness. Now gives you little victories every day. Now liberates you and allows you to move on.Now, doesn't that sound good?

Quick, entertaining read. Friendly, yet important, reminders . . . with several funny spots along the way.
Book Description
Biblically based and grounded in cross-cultural theory, this book gives practical guidelines for music ministry and mission in the local congregation and global community.
Customer Reviews:
A Music Minister Must Read.......2005-06-09
The Sound of the Harvest by Nathan Corbitt is an exemplary work on the role of music in the church and in culture. Moving beyond typical ethnocentric musical standards, Corbitt presents his research on music with a global perspective. In the first part of this book, Corbitt surveys the different function of music in the kingdom of God. He combines biblical studies, Church history, enthnnomusicology, missiology, scientific research, and contemporary culture in order to provide and define the following functions: music as priest (worshipping), music as prophet (calling people to righteousness and justice), music as proclaimer (communicating the salvation message), music as healer (alleviating suffering), music as preacher (speaking of God), and music as teacher (carrying sacred tradition).
The second portion of Corbitt's books reveals practical applications of how kingdom music functions in voice, song, and instrument. He calls for the Christian community to critically evaluate the music used in ministry but to be globally minded. Musicians and worship leaders with a true heart of worship must transcend their cultural and personal musical tastes and attempt to become musical servants who minister to the whole of the church. Corbitt states, "Musically, we can strive for a balance between `global music expression' which implies a common language, and respect the `heart of music' of people in a diverse world, while ministering in a holistic manner." Those musicians and worship leaders who can undertake this principle will have much success in their own churches when conflicts of style arise, and additionally, they will have much success in ministering in music in cross-cultural settings.
Personally, I believe that The Sound of the Harvest is one of the most well thought through books on music ministry written. Corbitt has integrated stories, practical examples, personal thoughts, and philosophies of music ministry which have resounded within me. I have a strong desire to be a musical servant who is sensitive to the Christians in my church, the unbelievers in my community, and people all over the world while attempting to maximize the potential of my God-given musical talents. This book by Nathan Corbitt has given me a solid foundation to do just that.
Sound of the Harvest: Music's mission in church and culture........2000-07-06
I must say that this book is excellent. I read the book about a year ago and still use it as a refrence today. I may be a little bit biased since I had the opportunity to have Dr. Corbitt as a professor at Eastern College (if you get a chance, take a course with him, he's awesome), but I must say that this book encompasses all the qualities that music has to offer in diffrent communities, churches, and cultures. My favorite part of the book was the topic of music as healing. I'm working on getting certified as a music therapist, and this chapter helped me to understand the biblical concepts of my profession. If you love music, and want to learn about it's usuage in church, different communities, or for your own personal use.... READ THIS BOOK! (Little note: I'm on the cover:)

A fun and enjoyable read.......1999-12-09
Ken Hoffman really has a way of putting a smile on my face. This collection of stories is easy to read and hard to put down. I have just lent it to my mother and know she will enjoy it, too.
An Easy Read - I couldn't put it down.......1999-11-03
This is the only time I have received a book as a gift that I actually liked. Someone gave me a copy at work. I LOVE IT. Now I am going to give it to my sister to read.
A humorous and thoughtful collection........1999-11-02
Ken Hoffman has a unique way of looking at the world. His ability to find the interesting aspects of everyday life make for a thoroughly enjoyable read. I would recommend this to my friends.
Highest Quality.......1999-10-21
I have read it twice.
Both humorous and substantive. One part is about the Hoffman's bittersweet story of infertility treatments that result in an adoption - a tale that is both funny and encouraging. It is very easy reading and I recommend it to everyone.

Customer Reviews:
Good book, but bring a magnifying glass.......2005-05-30
The book itself is very good. It generally gives an overview of most of the topics I wanted to find. I could not find a few things, but I will assume that I was searching for the subject by what I assumed to be the logical name. I will assume that one can find more answers once they learn the dialect of 'QuickBooksese'.
My main complaint is with the screen shots. When I learn a new subject, I always start with a simple overview book loaded with screen captures. Normally, that is a good way to dip one's toes in the water. With this book however, the screen shots were so tiny that the text was virtually illegible. Instead of my purpose being served by this book, I find myself having to buy something else, effectively turning my first purchase into wasted money.
MY OPINION OF THIS PUBLICATION.......2004-06-12
THE WAY THE PROGRAM IS ADDRESSED INITIALLY IS EXCELLENT IN THAT THE BOOK STARTS WITH THE BASIC CONCEPT OF THE FIRM-I.E., IT POINTS OUT AT THE BEGINNING THE KEY FINANCIAL CATEGORIES OF A COMPANY AND THE OPTIONS YOU HAVE AS FAR AS SETTING UP YOUR ACCOUNTS. THE REMAINING PARTS OF THE BOOK THAT I STUDIED WERE LOGICAL, SEQUENTIAL, BASIC, AND TO THE POINT. THE FORMAT IS VERY USER FRIENDLY AND I WOULD RECOMMEND IT WITHOUT RESERVATION.

Although mass atrocities are not unique to the 20th century, organized response to such violence has taken new forms, some of which offer hope of some small redress to the victims of war and genocide. In the groundbreaking and timely Between Vengeance and Forgiveness, Harvard Law School professor Martha Minow explores the benefits and drawbacks of a variety of forms of settlement.
For those who have recoiled in horror and outrage at collective violence in Rwanda, Bosnia, Cambodia, and elsewhere, this book--with chapters titled "Trials," "Truth Commissions," "Reparations," and "Facing History"--is a primer on how the world, and individuals, might respond to such acts once the shock subsides. Minow resists the idea that compensatory measures such as war-crimes tribunals and financial payback can ever bring true closure for those who have suffered. "Legal responses," she writes, "are inevitably frail and insufficient." Nevertheless, Minow advocates addressing these atrocities in a formal way: "The victimized deserve the acknowledgment of their humanity," she asserts, "and the reaffirmation of the utter wrongness of its violation." --Maria Dolan
Book Description
The rise of collective violence and genocide is the twentieth century's most terrible legacy. Martha Minow, a Harvard law professor and one of our most brilliant and humane legal minds, offers a landmark book on our attempts to heal after such large-scale tragedy. Writing with informed, searching prose of the extraordinary drama of the truth commissions in Argentina, East Germany, and most notably South Africa; war-crime prosecutions in Nuremberg and Bosnia; and reparations in America, Minow looks at the strategies and results of these riveting national experiments in justice and healing.
Customer Reviews:
Here is a lady who is not afraid to tackle the big issues........2000-10-17
For anyone interested in international law or human rights, this is a must-read. I am assigning this book to my undergraduates this semester because, although the subject matter is complex, Minow's prose is clean and spare. Minow does a terrific job of summarizing the episodes of mass violence of the 20th century AND the literature in legal and political studies on war crimes, human rights violations, and justice. I don't always share her optimism that solutions can be found, but I cannot think of another author who grapples with this difficult subject matter quite as gracefully or comprehensively.
An exercise in the problems of mass violence.......2000-07-03
Martha Minow has done her research. She carefully explored the different approaches to mass violence without over-moralizing or answering any of the unanswerable questions. Drawing on history, she charts a course for the human rights community today. This is a readable book for people who are new to the concept of human rights and those who have phD's in the field. Best of all, it does not leave you with a feeling of a weight upon your shoulders. Instead, it is some-how optimistic about a future that addresses the mass violence. I underlined about half of this book, and would recommend it to anyone.

Book Description
Napoleon Bonaparte and Adolf Hitler: each put his mark on an era. In this study, Seward examines the lives of these remarkable men and demonstrates the striking parallels between their careers and their roles in shaping the destiny of Europe. Napoleon and Hitler were both outsiders of humble origins. Both struggled to be accepted by society - Napoleon finding success in the military, Hitler finding self-esteem through a fringe political group. And, once they achieved power, the conduct of their political and military careers proved improbably similar. For each man the grand design was the conquest of Europe, and for each the dream would turn into a nightmare in a disastrous Russian winter campaign. NAPOLEON AND HITLER shows, in a remarkable way, how history can repeat itself
"Well composed, interesting, and with solidly founded conclusions." (Amazon.com)
Customer Reviews:
Only thing missing is Stalin.......2005-03-30
Well written and organized through extensive research, Seward provides the first scholarly comparison between Hitler and Napoleon. Each section of similarity is extensively described and well researched. A worthy companion to Alan Bullock's Hitler and Stalin which illustrates the comparison between Hitler and Stalin, though not as in-depth or detailed.
Excellent anlaysis.......1999-06-25
The great and prolific people of the world are always defined by the times in which they live, a fact which we cannot escape. To understand Hitler one must understand what came before, especially the legacy that Napoleon left upon the European continent. While a straight comparison/contrast of the two leaders is a core theme in this analysis, Desmond Seward transcends that, attacking the interrelational cause-and-effect relationship between the two conquerors. The enormous complexity of these two personalities, of which numerous, exhaustive studies have been made, preclude Seward from exploring each too deeply in one text. His exploration, as with most works of this nature, raises more questions than it solves, but he, quite thoroughly, includes direct references to his sources and admirably provides the reader directions for further study. While his comparison could use more focus on the thematic analysis rather than simply event-related parallels, it was well composed and quite interesting with solidly founded conclusions.
Book Description
Nature has secrets, and it is the desire to uncover them that motivates the scientific quest. But what makes these "secrets" secret? Is it that they are beyond human ken? that they concern divine matters? And if they are accessible to human seeking, why do they seem so carefully hidden? Such questions are at the heart of Peter Pesic's enlightening effort to uncover the meaning of modern science.
Pesic portrays the struggle between the scientist and nature as the ultimate game of hide-and-seek, in which a childlike wonder propels the exploration of mysteries. Witness the young Albert Einstein, fascinated by a compass and the sense it gave him of "something deeply hidden behind things." In musical terms, the book is a triple fugue, interweaving three themes: the epic struggle between the scientist and nature; the distilling effects of the struggle on the scientist; and the emergence from this struggle of symbolic mathematics, the purified language necessary to decode nature's secrets.
Pesic's quest for the roots of science begins with three key Renaissance figures: William Gilbert, a physician who began the scientific study of magnetism; François Viète, a French codebreaker who played a crucial role in the foundation of symbolic mathematics; and Francis Bacon, a visionary who anticipated the shape of modern science. Pesic then describes the encounters of three modern masters--Johannes Kepler, Isaac Newton, and Albert Einstein--with the depths of nature. Throughout, Pesic reads scientific works as works of literature, attending to nuance and tone as much as to surface meaning. He seeks the living center of human concern as it emerges in the ongoing search for nature's secrets.

A Delightful Challenge.......2001-03-24
Pesic tells a story of science that is almost mythic: It's a love story, a tale of heroic struggle and conquest, and a glimpse into the twisted passions of the human soul. Its most powerful achievement is to enact the drama between the soul and its need to know, both itself and the world around it. In his writing, he is exacting and specific, but not excruciatingly so. He introduced me to a fascinating man: Francois Viete, a genius code-breaker. (The chapter on Renaissance code-breaking techniques is difficult, but rewarding). I recommend this book to anyone interested in science, math, cryptology, literature, and/or psychology.
Correlative study of arcane minds.......2001-01-29
I give Labyrinth 5 stars for its presumptuous and didactic approach to some of the great minds that obsessed over science and brought new light and awareness to the world. Peter Pesic does an excellent job of discussing the variant approaches pursued by Kepler, Newton, Bacon, and Einstein in demystifying the relationship between nature and science. He discusses the methods each scientist embraced, their discoveries, their cognitive and emotional struggles, and limitations. Overall, it was a nice introduction for me into the realm of science considering I generally quibble in literature.
Vision: Rare and vivid.......2000-09-28
'Labyrinth' broadens the usual approach to science by recognizing the dialogue between humanity and nature. By calling up the image of the labyrinth, Pesic reminds us that so much as science is symbolic, it symbolizes and is interconnected with the natural world. I am reminded that the scientific scope refers to the nature of those who struggle to discover Nature's laws, and who find themselves within that struggle. 'Labyrinth' reminds us of the importance of unifying ourselves with the nature we carry with us but which may not have the courage to know. If a man's vision can be said to be the great fact about him, Pesic's is surely rare and vivid.

Philosophy and science merged.......2000-07-05
This book is not a straight science book-but rather a mix between a book of philosophy and science. It has many interesting ideas, and enough science so that "normal folk" have a chance of understanding it.

Book Description
"Curtin offers an important contribution to environmental philosophy. Though concerned with proposing an American environmental ethic, he shows that such an ethic requires an intercultural context." --Choice
" . . . this is a very important book, raising serious questions for development theorists and environmentalists alike." --The Boston Book Review
Just who is Chinnagounder? He is one man in India, trying to deal with the competing stresses of postcolonialism and environmentalism--a man to whom Deane Curtin introduces us in this sophisticated work of public philosophy which explores questions such as: Can indigenous peoples define the terms of change for themselves? What impact does postcolonialism have on population, social justice, and womens rights? How can inhabitants of our global village balance the preservation of wild nature and the ever-increasing need for access to land and to safe food and water?
Customer Reviews:
Provocative.......2006-03-20
A good, provocative introduction to the question of the contemporary boundaries of citizenship - our Western/liberal global view is often incommensurable with the communitarian view of the East and to bring a policy of environmental protection abroad, we need to be aware of the moral dilemmas at play. Curtin does a good job of introducing that concept.
