Book Description
Non-market valuation has become a broadly accepted and widely practiced means of measuring the economic values of the environment and natural resources. In this book, now available in paperback, the authors provide a guide to the statistical and econometric practices that economists employ in estimating non-market values.
The authors develop the econometric models that underlie the basic methods: contingent valuation, travel cost models, random utility models and hedonic models. They analyze the measurement of non-market values as a procedure with two steps: the estimation of parameters of demand and preference functions and the calculation of benefits from the estimated models. Each of the models is carefully developed from the preference function to the behavioral or response function that researchers observe. The models are then illustrated with data sets that characterize the kinds of data researchers typically deal with.
The real world data and clarity of writing in this book will appeal to environmental economists, students, researchers and practitioners in multilateral banks and government agencies.

A Great Laugh.......2000-01-18
This book is a great buy for one of those days when you are down in the dumps. You simply have to read a few of the lists and you'll be on the floor in fits of laughter. It's one of those books that can get you laughing even when you think that nothing can cheer you up. This book is not the most meaningful of books however if taken with a good sense of humour and a pinch of salt you will enjoy this book.
A waste of time........1999-02-26
It is too bad that some trees had to give their lives so this book could be published.

Customer Reviews:
The Real World: Back to New York 24/7.......2002-06-27
Not a bad book at all. It's a nice insight on what they really thought. Ever wondered what really happened between Kevin and Lori? What did the roommates think of Nicole's Bobby? What castmembers felt left out? Why did the Jisela and Malik relationship go sour? It's all in there with a lot more. Each castmember has a section in which they narrate, then they have casting exceprts. In each cast member's section, they are critiqued by their roommates and the crew. There is a section dedicated to all the drama that went down. If you liked the New Orleans season, you can catch up with that group. All in all, it's a good book. I'd definitely say it's a must-have for any "Real World" fan.
It's Back!.......2001-12-27
I recieved this as a gift for Christmas. Being the big Real World fan I am, I read the book within a short period of time. Wow, I didn't know how much tension there was between them. Ofcorse, watching the show, you could see there were several arguments. The book goes into great detail so you can really understand what everything was about.
This book gives you everything. Cast Bios, Cast Opinions, and tells you things that you would have least expected! The only thing I wish is that it was longer, or they'd release another book on this season because I'm left wanting to know more and more.
They also included information on The New Orleans cast. Man, it seems like they all hate each other now. However, there still are some friendships still happening. Danny remains loyal to everybody. Julie and Melissa are friends. Everybody HATES David and thinks Matt is a little full of himself.
All in all, this is the #1 item for a typical Real World fan. Get it!

Book Description
He's back! Adobe's already-powerful imaging editing software has just grown a whole lot more powerful, and best-selling author Scott Kelby (editor of Photoshop User magazine) has returned to unlock even more of its secrets. Using step-by-step instructions and nearly 700 full-color images, Scott reveals precisely how to achieve some of Photoshop Element 3's most closely guarded special effects. By the end of the volume you'll have learned more than 300 new techniques for using Adobe's affordable consumer-level software. Packed with creative ideas, layouts, and design techniques, the volume does more than just rehash masking, pixels, and file formats and resolution: It provides you with the Elements chops you need to unleash your own creativity.
Customer Reviews:
Good book.......2006-11-26
I like this book as a starting place to help with learning some of the ins & outs of Photoshop Elements (PSE) - I actually happen to be using v. 5. It is a bells & whistles book, not a general tutorial book for how to use all the features of PSE.
I just started digital scrapbooking about a month ago, so I wanted a few tricks for making my photos better and beginning to create some elements, so for me it has worked out very well. I've gotten a couple other books that ended up being too simplified and the results somewhat "cheesy", so I found this book more of a middle ground for a beginner who learns quickly - not too simplified, but not complicated.
Typical Kelby.......2005-07-22
This is yet another book from the man who is trying to take over Photoshop with his "Photoshop Professionals" organization.
Someone should take Scott Kelby into a quiet room and tell him some home truths. The first one, in fact probably the only one, is that he's just NOT FUNNY.
If you want a second one, the most important word in the English Language is not one character long, usually expressed in upper case, and is the character that appears between H and J in the alphabet.
And here's one that might save people some money - if you see a neat technique in advertising, it is a good idea to remember it (cut out the page, if necessary) and try to reproduce it yourself. There are a number of "Down and Dirty tips" like this - the one I recall is the one using a watch.
In fact, the tips here are more Up and Clean than Down and Dirty. If you want your Photoshop work to be slightly more interesting (but not too interesting), this is the book for you.
This book bears all the hallmarks of a book done by several authors, none of which had too much interest in it. I don't know whether Mr. Kelby contributed every word in this book, but there are parts with altogether too much sophomore humor (and I'm doing it a favor rating it that high), along with mildly interesting techniques. The humor is something that was passe at the time of DOS for Dummies, and the only reason that I give this two stars is that someone can use the techniques.
However, the techniques shown are yawn-inspiring. There's little or nothing that will blow your socks off, and this book comes a long way behind the Elements One-Click Wow! book.
According to the blurb, this book shows you "Photoshop Element 3's most closely guarded special effects." If you think about this for a minute, why would Adobe want to guard the special effects you can make with its program? And why would Scott Kelby need to have the words in the title "Voices that Matter"?
If a book can't stand on its own merits, why should it need to be bumped up? And why can't the author put over his points without obscuring them with unfunny remarks?
Look elsewhere. This book is for the Windows version only (not that I care that much, because I use Windows). There are plenty of better books on Photoshop Elements techniques.
Many Unanswered Questions.......2005-06-03
I read the book cover to cover while using it as a companion tutor to an on line dslr course. I found many of the steps not complete. I had basic questions on basic elements of PSE 3.0 and didn't find any mention of them in the book or index. I was left "wanting" for my answers on the basic of uses in Organizer and Editor.
Excellent Photoshop Elements 3 Book.......2005-05-14
Excellent Book! Full of useful information that is made simple by step by step insructions. Great information for someone who understands the basic tools of Photoshop, but wants to create more prfessional looking photos. Wonderful examples that inspire new ideas and twists on classic pictures! Highly Recommended!
A need for photo organization before the bells and whistles.......2005-04-18
I am an Adobe fan. I have Adobe Album 2, Elements 3 and Photoshop CS. Using a Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II camera with my Epson 4000 Printer going through Photoshop CS is a marriage made in heaven. But first, I want to store and organize my photos in my own way. This I did with Album 2, 2nd Version, to the limits of its capability. Its limits, I can see are mostly overcome in Elements 3 and I want to transfer my Album 2 organization to Elements 3 with its much more sophisticaled capability. I have 5,000 photos. There is nothing in Mr. Kelby's book about organizing photos at all. His index is 4 pages long. Under the word "photos or photographs" there is nothing. Under the word "organizing" or "organization" there is nothing. Under the "word" albums, there is nothing.
Yet this is the first thing this Elements 3 Program wants to do is to collect all my "bmp's" and "jpegs" and drop them in one file for me to organize. With 5,000 photos, I don't want to go through this very time consuming procedure again. If there was some space spent on this first step, I could figure how to transfer my Adobe Album 2 photo organization to the expanded capability of Element 3. The organizational ability of Elements 3 is ignored. The other aspects elaborated on are much better done through Photoshop CS. The lack of explanation on the basics of photograph organization makes me feel this book is of little help.

Customer Reviews:
It was Okay.......2006-07-19
This book helps to brush up on a few key points, like math and mechanical. It depends on which test you are taking. It dosn't cover much of what is on the ASTB, it offers a little help, but not much.
poorly edited.......2006-04-04
This book has a ton of typographical errors. This book and the Arco book appear to be the only 2 books available as study guides for the AFOQT. After buying and studying from both books, I am not surprised the Air Force recommends studying from other guides like SAT, ACT, GRE, etc. The explanations are poor also. I've been studying from these books and bought other guides and have basically been using the other guides to find explanations for similar questions that I do not understand.
Do not rely on this book!.......2006-04-03
This book is full of typographical errors and wrong equations in the math section. I called Cliffs and reported at least 29 pages with problems on them.
The Air Force Officer Qualifing Test has changed.......2006-03-12
I think that this book is the better of the two that I bought if you are non-technical. The test is now 12 sections. I took the test on March the 10th, 2006. No reading comprehension or Data Interpertation any more. I would buy this book just so that you are familar with the style of the questions. More of the test is concentrated on the Military Flight Aptitude Tests. If you want to be a navagator or pilot definitly buy the military flight book. It is even out of date too with a few sections not covered. There is one section of the test you can't study for which is section 12 of the test. Don't worry it isn't hard for anyone that graduated from college. General science is included in the test. Chart reading. the airplane direction with the instraments and aviation knowledge are still on the test. Movement of the blocks, and hidden objects are still on the test and the blocks touching the other blocks which the format of that has changed.
umm... not so sure about this one.......2005-03-02
To be honest, I used probably less than half this book. I read through the verbal sections and those were ok. I skipped much of the math tutorials because I use math all the time in school. But when I got to scale reading, 3 out of 10 of the samples questions had incorrect answers. That was a shocker to me. How do book editors let 3 errors go unnoticed. Following that, in the mechanical section, there's a statement about how you compare viscosities of liquids.
"engine oil has a high viscosity because it flows easily while molasses has a low viscosity because it flows quite slowly."
For those of us who've had a decent amount of exposure to either math, science, or mechanics, we would know this is a complete fallacy. The typist probably got "high" and "low" mixed up late at night while drinking liters of coffee. But this does a huge disservice to anyone who isn't too familiar with these things.
I give this book 2 stars based on the absurdity of the errors.

Book Description
In the seventeenth century, smallpox reigned as the world's worst killer. Luck, more than anything else, decided who would live and who would die. That is, until Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, an English aristocrat, moved to Constantinople and noticed the Turkish practice of "ingrafting" or inoculation, which, she wrote, made "the small- pox...entirely harmless." Convinced by what she witnessed, she allowed her six-year-old son to be ingrafted, and the treatment was a complete success--the young Montagu enjoyed lifelong immunity from smallpox. Lady Montagu's discovery would, however, remain a quiet one; it would be almost 150 years before inoculation (in the more modern form of vaccination) would become widely accepted while the medical community struggled to understand the way our bodies defend themselves against disease. William Clark's At War Within takes us on a fascinating tour through the immune system, examining the history of its discovery, the ways in which it protects us, and how it may bring its full force to bear at the wrong time or in the wrong place. Scientists have only gradually come to realize that this elegant defense system not only has the potential to help, as in the case of smallpox, but also the potential to do profound harm in health problems ranging from allergies to AIDS, and from organ transplants to cancer. Dr. Clark discusses the myriad of medical problems involving the immune system, and he systematically explains each one. For example, in both tuberculosis and AIDS, the underlying pathogens take up residence within the immune system itself, something Clark compares to having a prowler take up residence in your house, crawling around through the walls and ceilings while waiting to do you in. He discusses organ transplants, showing how the immune system can work far too well, and touching on the heated ethical debate over the use of both primate and human organs. He explores the mind's powerful ability to influence the performance of the immune system; and the speculation that women, because they have developed more powerful immune systems in connection with childbearing, are more prone than men to contract certain diseases such as lupus. In a fascinating chapter on AIDS, arguably the most deadly epidemic seen on Earth since the smallpox, Clark explains how the disease originated and the ways in which it operates. And, in each section, we learn about the most recent medical breakthroughs. At first glance, it may appear that our immune system faces daunting odds; it must learn to successfully fend off, not thousands, but millions of different types of microbes. Fortunately, according to Clark, it would be almost impossible to imagine a more elegant strategy for our protection than the one chosen by our immune system, and his At War Within provides a thorough and engaging explanation of this most complex and delicately balanced mechanism.

Disappointing.......2007-07-15
Clark's "Sex & The Origins Of Death" is one of the most remarkable books ever written, cover-to-cover an exhilarating revelation. So with great anticipation for "War Within" it was a sad surprise to find it become a bedtime sedative. Clark's masterly command of vivid painting with words disappears almost entirely after chapter two and appears only sparsely before that. Of course it is not without several gems: "Like an army lashing out blindly against an unseen and unmeasured enemy, the immune system is capable of using excessive deadly force in the wrong place and time..." And this is the core subject of Clark's book, how our marvelous life-saving immune system can turn on us with deadly effect. (If there were an intelligent designer, this fact scarcely says anything positive for the designer's intelligence.) Reminding us of chronic human foolishness we find there was resistance to immunization because disease was one of God's means for punishment of the wicked - applying equally to autoimmune disease in infants whose transgression would be...? The bizarre ability of T-cells to command other cells to commit suicide is touched upon, but a more in-depth coverage of this fascinating "programmed cell death" awaits his text noted above - which was written 3 years later, so Clark improves immensely in short order. Incidentally, Clark notes that each human consumes about 30 tons of food in a lifetime (in his section on food allergies). Given almost 7 billion humans that's over 200 billion tons of food consumed by humans every 70 years or so - no wonder we're eating species into extinction. Mostly a rather dry history of immunology, perhaps it's of greater interest to the practitioner than the general reader.
Should have read this one a long time ago!.......2006-08-03
This was one of those books I purchased quite a while ago when I was in an HIV lab and I put it aside, and never quite got around to reading it. In the midst of a summer heatwave where I didn't want to go out to the library, and was browsing for something I hadn't read, I got back to this book. And...what a book it is!!! Immunology can be one of the most mind-boggling difficult things to understand, yet Clark, who is obviously at the forefront of this area of medicine, really knows how to make this information accessible to even the least scientifically-minded laymen.
I actually pick up the book and was looking at something specific in the middle of the book. I couldn't put it down again til I read the rest of the book and then went back and read the first part of the book. It still made sense, and that's not easy to do coming into a science like this. This book should be required reading for all those in immunology or any of the side fields that end up using antibodies in their work, like we did to determine what type of growth factors were being churned out by the introduction of HIV to nerve and astrocytes. It makes the work much more understandable and interesting to those doing the technical work. It would be great if they could get Clark to update the book if he is around, with what new information has been discovered over the last few years in this field.
This is also a must-read for anyone interested for self or family members undergoing autoimmune problems, as it explains why the body would turn around and attack itself. Since so many diseases are being determined to have an autoimmune part (as well as a trigger from a virus or bacteria) this becomes essential reading.
Earl Dennis' review of this book is also a must-read, as I agree with everything he says and he says it so humorously!

Our Immune System: A Mixed Blessing........2004-12-16
Clark's description of the war being waged within all of us demarcates the front lines: where our immune system (however functional or dysfunctional it may be) must constantly react to foreign microorganisms and our own cells. Not only does Clark discuss congenital immune diseases that leave some of us in various states of vulnerability, he also goes into detail about allergies, asthma, TB, viral hepatitis B, and other diseases in which the immune system wreaks havoc in the body, causing more damage than the intruding antigens.
Prior to his description of the war within, he provides a brief history of vaccination and an overview of the immune system's anatomy. The second half of the book contains chapters on the devastation of AIDS, the ethical dilemmas surrounding immunosuppresants and organ transplantation, and an insightful description of the electrochemical dialogue between the brain and immune system. The final chapter of the book explains how immunological thought developed during the 20th century, culminating in Burnet's clonal selection theory - which explains how we can protect ourselves (usually) against a seemingly infinite universe of pathogens without destroying our own bodies (usually). Great read, great book!
Clark is a gem........2001-06-14
Most neurosurgeons and astrophysicists are busy constructing the future. Some of these overacheivers suffer from a mild mental disorder called hypergraphia and compulsively write stuff down. Fortunately Dr. William Clark suffers from hypergraphia and we benefit hugely because we can look into his mind by reading his books, and what a view it is. This book is essentially about mammalian immunology. Immunology is an odd subject to get because its quite dynamic, meaning its operation is determined by a wide array of parts. Clark's book is short, sweet and to the point. He covers the basics and proceeds with case studies that bring the lay reader close to his profession without having to spend years in postdoc research doing so. His opening account of the rancerous competition between France's Louis Pasteur and Germany's Robert Koch is fantastic reading for the bonified dork. Most interestingly, Clark primes us with some genetic engineering technique in his marvelous description of SCID, severe combined immune deficiency, and its concomitant 'magic bullet' cure based on the gene therapy associated with a monogenetic disorder; interesting stuff here. His coverage of autoimmune disorders alone makes this brief, action packed essay worth the price. Clark makes the mind numbing world of immunology a little bit friendlier here.
It made knowing the body so easy I was a professor when done.......1999-03-19
This is a fantastic book if you want to begin to know how your body and immune system work. From colds to cancer, It simplified and helped me to know how to begin the course of a natural cure. It put years of study about disease in real focus.
