Passtrack Life, Accident and health insurance.......2004-08-20
This book is typical of many text books; dry and confusing. The material is presented in a dry and boring fashion. You will NOT want to read this book for any reason other than passing the insurance exam.
Good combination of Life & Health (Accident & Disability).......2002-07-06
Combines the Dearborne Pastrack Health Insurance & Life Insurance License Exam Manuals.
Overall it is a good study guide (I passed using this book with 2 weeks of leisurely at home study), but the test section could be revamped - it did not include enough questions that were like the ones on the actual exam (I took an Experior Online state exam).

An eccentric classic.......2000-10-23
This book is not for lay people or even undergraduates. Not that it is all that technically demanding. Rather, it is unusual in its style and content. This text is a landmark in modern macroeconomics. It begins with a very simple model for the ideas of Thomas Malthus. It was the first to place the neoclassical growth model at center stage. It is the first place to discuss in print what later became known as Ricardian Equivalence. It was written at the very dawn of the rational expectations - market clearing revolution in macro, yet betrays a deeper understanding of those ideas than most contemporary texts.
It makes a radical break with IS-LM (regrettably entrenched for over 50 years) and proposes an alternative with the real interest rate (r) on one axis and the price level (P) on another. The M curve represents combinations of r and P consistent with equilibrium in the supply and demand for real balances. The Y curve represents combinations consistent of the same, consistent with market clearing for goods. The intersection of M and Y determine P and r. Real output does not appear on either axis because it is determined by the labor market. Sticky wages or prices can be (and are) incorporated into the model. I find the M-Y model much more natural than IS-LM with AD-AS.
Much of the discussion is built around a computer simulation model, probably long vanished, that reminds me of a deterministic version of a simple real business cycle model. Miller and Upton understood that a lot of macroeconomics can be explored within a spreadsheet, even though spreadsheets had yet to be invented!
Finally, the prose is rich and beautiful, reflecting the shining influence of the late Merton Miller, a wise and witty writer.

it's o.k. but not great.......2006-03-22
for someone who has prior knowledge of finale, it is probably informative. But for someone like myself, who wanted to understand the basics, the book was not very helpful. Overall, the book lacked consistency in providing information - some parts were very detailed, while other parts presumed the reader already knew a lot.
A very helpful guide.......2005-08-27
Either for the beginner or the seasoned composer, Finale 2005 Power! is a must-have reference both for Mac and Windows users. It is an excellent guide, ranging from setting up Finale on your computer to using Finale with MIDI devices. Page layout is clear and full of "how-to" and "what-is" graphics. Finale features and how to use them are explained step-by-step. The author has a clear writing style and obviously knows his subject since he works for the company that produces Finale. This text will give one the help needed to master both the basics of Finale and the many features needed by seasoned composers.
Finale Power.......2005-02-01
Finale Power 2005a book review.
The book starts off with the usual preliminary global view of the whole program. I expected this part to be boring, but I read it through and picked up lots of details that I did not know. Throughout these first chapters, there are references to the subject to later chapters, where you can find more details. The book itself is well layed out with tips throughout. The whole book reminds me of the format used by David Pogue's Missing Manuals.
Although there is a comprehensive Finale manual on line, this book actually goes into more detail, not so much in describing every little detail, but more into how you actually perform the functions. Years ago I printed out the whole Finale manual which filled two 3-inch binders. At the beginning of each chapter, I wrote out all the `How to's" at the end of each chapter, so that I could go to a function right away. The Finale Power 2005a book expands on all of these `How to's', to show you how to handle these functions in detail.
The end of the book tackles integration of Finale with the web and other programs and also shows some examples of using third party plug-ins. I hav not gone into specific details of the functions, but I will just mention that I did find one plug-in of real interest to me. It is `Smart explosion of Multi-part Staves. I did not find it in TGtools in Finale, and found that I needed to download it. It can be used free of charge for 30 days. The book describes how to use it. What it does is it takes a staff with multi parts in it, and seperates the parts, such that each part is on a different stave. A little bit like the explode function, but much much smarter. There are other plugins that are explained in this chapter, and references to all the third party sites where you can obtain those extra plugins that make Finale so much easier to use.
As an intermediate user of Finale, I would say that the book is most helpful for me. I think that when I have read through it, I will be able to be a more powerful user and if I need even more nitty gritty details, I will be able to read the online comprehensive manual more easily and also be very savvy to the more advanced details that are often discussed in the Finale bbs forums.
I would recommend the book to all Finale users; beginner, intermediate or advanced.

"I've cast out my razor, divorced my soap, buried my manners, signed my socks to a two-year contract, and proved that you don't have to come in out of the rain." So wrote Corporal Thomas P. Noonan from Vietnam, proving that humor doesn't fail even in war. Noonan's letter is just one of over 50,000 that letter-enthusiast Andrew Carroll (Letters of a Nation) received after Abigail Van Buren publicized his Legacy Project in her Dear Abby column. Out of this treasure trove he selected 150, spanning 130 years of warfare from the Civil War to Bosnia. While there are letters from such notables as General William Tecumseh Sherman and even Julia Childs, most were written by uncelebrated but dearly loved soldiers from barracks, trenches, and flooded foxholes and by combat journalists, nurses, and family members on the home front.
While the letters are not unrelentingly grim, there is ample description of the rending agonies of war and the pain of separation. For instance, a recounting of horrors found in a Nazi concentration camp, or a tender letter to a just-born daughter who may never be seen. Private First Class Richard King describes the death of a Catholic chaplain blessing the foxholes: "An artillery shell cut him in half at the waist." Staff Sergeant Joe Sammarco tells how he crawled, wounded, across streams and into hills in order to escape the Chinese, propelled by the thought of his wife and his babies. Many of these are "last letters," often received after the news of the writer's death. Lieutenant Tommie Kennedy, a POW on a Japanese "hell ship," wrote his farewells on the only thing he had--the back of two family photographs, which were smuggled back to his parents.
These are, as Carroll writes, "the first, unfiltered drafts of history." His rich sample testifies to the universal and poignant themes of love and honor, courage and rage, duty and fear and mortality. The playful and heartfelt voices grant us the personal perspective all too often lost in news reports and government statements. Taken together, they remind us that, despite the playful good cheer, the human cost of war is far too high. An incredibly profound book!.......2006-05-22
This book is a great read. It is refeshing to be able to read words, thoughts and dreams from people as they perform such honorable duty overseas. This book is powerful and should be required reading for all, especially Americans.
Some anti-war activist may think it is "pro-war" but it isn't just that. This book reveals personal thoughts and challenges faced by American military personnel in wars from the Civil War until the later conflicts in the 20th century. It is pro-war, anti-war and everything in between.
This book reminds me of the sacrifice that so many make for their country. It is a great tribute for those who have served.
A useful read.......2006-03-28
i only gave it three stars because many of the stories were more about patriotism than about the war themselves. Of course every book has its bias so its still a useful and moving read when taken with this grain of salt.
A wonderful, different type of war book, but . . . .......2006-03-19
I received this book as a gift because my family knows I love reading personal histories from those who lived it and "War Letters" seemed perfect for that. I enjoy learning what life was like for the average citizen in an era, whether its someone riding the Erie Canal in 1840, a foot soldier in the American revolution, or a journal from the Civil War.
This is a remarkable book and taken individually there are many, many heart-rending emotional stories that probably need to be read by many people. It does in fact put a personal face on war. Because it is a collection of letters, the book is easily read in short spurts; you don't want (and shouldn't) read this book quickly.
I only gave the book 4 stars because I actually found it hard to read. While the personal letters (the spelling, mannerisms of the authors) help tell their stories, it also keeps the book from developing any flow. Some letters are agonzingly slow to read and understand. I'm certainly not faulting the authors or their stories; but if you're looking for a great, well-written, smooth-flowing story that you can't put down, this isn't it.

I actually read a review about this book and gave it as a gift to my sister-in-law who teaches high school history. She LOVES it and told me it was an amazing collection of actual letters. She said all of the teachers that she works with have been borrowing it!!

This book is awesome, I have read it numerous times. My heart goes out to the letters writers and receivers... I urge you to spread the word of this book... It will really open your eyes to see that Military Personel and their signifigant others are real people, with real feelings... I really look forward to another book like this coming out. I will definately buy it.

In Mayan Drifter Juan Felipe Herrera journeys to the Maya Lowlands of Chiapas on a quest for his Indio heritage and a vision of the multicultured identity emerging in America. Inspired by the Maya's resilience, Herrera envisions the disappearance of borders and evokes a fluid American self that needs no fixed identity or location.
