Book Description
General Equilibrium Analysis is a systematic exposition of the Walrasian model of economic equilibrium with a finite number of agents, as formalized by Arrow, Debreu and McKenzie at the beginning of the fifties and since then extensively used, worked and studied. Existence and optimality of general equilibrium are developed repeatedly under different sets of hypothesis which define some general settings and delineate different approaches to the general equilibrium existence problem. The final chapter is devoted to the extension of the general equilibrium model to economies defined on an infinite dimensional commodity space.
The objective of
General Equilibrium Analysis is to give to each problem in each framework the most general solution, at least for the present state of art. The intended readers are graduate students, specialists and researchers in economics, especially in mathematical economics. The book is appropriate as a class text, or for self-study.

Book Description
How does a market globalize? How do antitrust and trade policies speed up or slow down the process? How do firms take part in it? This book offers a comprehensive appraisal of the phenomenon from a thorough study of the cement industry. Considered as a model of spatial competition in economic textbooks and inherently local, the industry globalized in the 1980s. This book deals with this extreme case highlighting the fundamental characteristics of globalization.

This is it.......2004-04-04
This is THE resource for singers and teachers alike. Using both phoenetic and IPA characters, the book explains step by step the common pronunciations of both vowels and consonants for each language. French and German are not particularly easy languages to pronounce correctly, and there are a lot of rules to keep in mind. This book helps a lot, and you can easily refer back to it in order to check yourself. A must have for singers and teachers.

Customer Reviews:
Random, disconnected, & ultimately infuriating.......2006-10-30
I have had this book for almost a year, and have given it every opportunity to teach me. Twice a month at least, I have given it another chance: I just want to learn to use Photoshop Elements! Each time I crack the book open, I come to the same conclusion: it is arranged in near-random order, with no concept of learning by gradually introducing concepts and techniques in some sort of logical order. It is instead a dizzying collection of specific techniques, none of which are understandable because they assume knowledge the reader already has. When I try to learn a technique, fail to understand it, and go back to review, I find that there's been no previous explanation of the concepts!
One illustration: Elements apparently works through the separate manipulation of "Layers". Layers are essential to Photoshop. But Layers are not explained ... anywhere! Using the chapter of contents, the index, or indeed reading the whole book to try to find exactly what a Layer is results in nothing but frustration. After a year, I am no closer to understanding or using layers, and no closer to unlocking the secrets of what I'm told is a fine piece of software.
Please understand that this rant is not written by a software, computer, or photography newbie. I am a serious photographer, and am experienced with multiple P.C. programs, from DOS all the way through the latest versions of Windows and all the Office components. For all the resources which clearly went into this attractive manual, Mr. Aaland should be ashamed that he forgot one thing: teaching the reader in any sort of logical manner.
Great reference resource.......2005-10-25
Great book for the beginner or as a reference guide for the experienced user. Has easy to follow step-by-step instructions of the examples shown in the book. Would highly recommend this book to a new Photoshop user.
Photoshop Elements 3 Solutions.......2005-08-02
Of all the books on Digital Photography I've seen, this is the best. Very clear instructions.
Some excellent step by step but at times too wordy.......2005-04-13
On page 30 the author has a step-by-step process for basic editing of a photo. This was the clearest explanation I have encountered. The steps are easy to follow and the author explains which steps need to be done in what order. There are other similar step-by-step processes throughout the book. At times though the clarity gets lost in over explanation. Unfortunately the explanations seldom help in understanding how to use the tool.
However - the book provides overall clear intstuction and tips that I have not found other places.
An excellent PSE3 starter - but getting long in the tooth.......2005-03-11
Were I a first-time user of PSE3, this book richly would have deserved a 5-star rating for its in-depth presentation of basics, its introduction to more advanced techniques, the author's comfortable writing style and quality of production.
Having used Aaland's earlier PSE2 Solutions (a 5-star rave), however, I found this edition more of a repeat (word by word, and picture by picture, at times) than a total revision - with some new material added to cover new functions such as the healing brush, and a drawn-out section on Photo Browser. With few exceptions, the images on the accompanying CD are identical to those on the PSE2 edition; only the kids seem to have grown up. In short, this author hasn't given his all to updating one of the best PSE tutorials around; it's still darn good, but it could have been even better. One can only hope that the next (PSE4) edition will be totally revised, refreshed, and rejuvenated with a brand-new image gallery.
Book Description
The order of the Temple was a military-religious organisation that was set up to protect pilgrims and settlers in the Holy Land. The Templars believed they were God's warriors fighting on God's behalf and developed a fearsome reputation among the neighbouring Muslim rulers. This book examines the men who joined the order and why they joined it, focusing on those who fought in the Holy Land. Based on contemporary sources it provides an effective insight into the daily lives of the warriors, from their admission ceremony to their training, organisation in the field, and how they fought in battle.
Customer Reviews:
Solid History.......2007-03-31
I appreciate this book's lack of mythical jargon and alleged conspiracies, but its simple focus on the appearance, lifestyle, and gear of the Templars. An essential and highly recommended title. Also has good plates.
A Factual History of the Knights Templar.......2007-01-21
Knight Templar 1120-1312, by Helen Nicholson is, like most of the books in the Osprey Warrior series, well-written and copiously illustrated.
Although only 64 pages in length, the greatest value of the book is its several photographs and illustrations allowing the reader to get a good `picture' of what Templar life was like.
The book is divided into the following chapters:
Introduction
Chronology
Recruitment and Admission
Belief and Belonging
Training
Appearance and Equipment
Living Conditions: On Campaign
Experience of Battle
Museums and Re-Enactment
Glossary
Bibliography
Color Plate Commentaries
Index
"Knight Templar 1120-1312" is a good introduction to the historical Knights Templar for those unaware of their history and a fair quick reference for those with a deeper background.
The book lacks any of the claims of Templar mysticism or its ties to Freemasonry, and remains focused on established history.
If you enjoy reading about the Knights Templar, than this book is definitely a worthwhile addition to your library.
Great Information For Such a Little Book.......2006-09-28
I like this book because it has useful, practical information, is written by scholars and it has good illustrations. I like the fact that the book focuses on what daily life would have been like for the warrior-monks and that the authors also talk about why people joined the Templars. One thing I did not know before reading this is that there were nuns who were part of the Templars, though they did not fight in the Holy battles and they were understandably segregated most of the time from their male counterparts.
I was very impressed with the descriptions of what they wore (which is very useful to me since I write historical fiction). I love the fact that the illustrations are so brilliant and detailed. One of the things that frustrates me about books relating to the Medieval period is that the illustrations are poor (unless it's a children's book and then you get little information). This book is great because it has the look of a young adult book, but the information appears to be well researched. It is definately history made easy and fun!
Everything factual about the Order of the Knights Templar.......2004-12-17
Helen Nicholson is "Reader in History" at Cardiff University, one of Britain's major teaching and research universities. She specializes in the history of Military Orders and this book captures the history of the Knights Templar in a very easy to read and clearly written manner.
This book covers the actual history, not any of the myths or legends, of the Order of the Temple. The time period covered is from the first band of warriors who asked for approval of their idea from the Council at Nablus to the end of the order in the early 14th century after charges of heresy and witchcraft damaged the order's reputation beyond repair.
The book's main focus is the order itself. Covered topics are "Recruitment and Admission" covering how one joined the order and how membership was recruited based on skills, position and the need of the order. The focus was on protection of Catholic Christians and membership reflected the need for well trained knights, who held the higher status. This also covers purpose of the order, locations of the order, housing and communities, age of members, other support positions and retirement.
The "Beliefs and Belonging" section covers the basic beliefs, the order as monks and their duty to God, their vows, their purpose and how it interplayed with various cultures and other religious beliefs, notations of the order in books, personal writings, and artistic images. Ms. Nicholson builds up the picture so that we can better understand what the intended purpose of the order was and what the order developed into.
In the "Training" and "Appearance and Equipment" sections we are given a very detailed look at what the order placed focus on. While training was not emphasized, it was understood that knights came trained and everyone else learned along the way. We are also given insight into what the order required for each knight and servant to wear and use. From their undergarments to the way to ride a horse, every element of everyday life was spelled out for the monks and they were expected to adhere to these rules and regulations.
"Living Conditions: on campaign" gives us the military dress for the Templars, garrisons, chapels, castles and fortresses and further extends our look into the culture of the Templar order. We also have the "Experience of Battle", outlining the history of the Templar campaigns, their successes and their defeats from a variety of sources.
Also discussed in brief are museums and re-enactment groups of modern day.
While the history is easy to understand, well explained and details are not overlooked, the book benefits greatly from the addition of graphic works of art by Wayne Reynolds. Wonderful color plates of costume, armor and armament, and battle depictions give us very clear idea of Templar everyday life. Black and white photos of places, castles, illuminated manuscripts, order seals and old wood blocks help to visually fill in and add to our understanding of what life and culture was like in the Levant at the time the Order of the Templar Knights. There is also a chronology table that enables us to fill in at a glance where the Templar Knights are placed in respect to Crusader history and what important dates and events corresponded directly to the Crusades.
This book easily fills in some gaps left by general texts and would be very helpful in student research on The Crusades. The easy to understand style and the excellent graphics and choices of illustrations also makes this a book that can be used by any students from the 6th grade on up. Those older students who are not familiar with the topic will find this just as useful as a basic primer for their class term papers.
Again, this is an excellent book covering the military aspects and culture of the time and the Knights Templar Order. A must have in any school library. Medievalcrusadesbabe

Book Description
During the Reformation period many of the fiercest debates centered on the nature of authority. These covered every aspect of Christian faith and life. The authority of scripture; the authority on which disputed points of faith and order could be decided; the authorizing of ministry in the Church; the efficacy of the sacraments, were all contested. Such issues are shown by the author of this study to remain ecumenically significant, both because it proved impossible at the time to resolve them to everyone's satisfaction, and because they continued to represent the focus of mutual hostility among the separated churches.

There are two widely held scientific theories concerning the origin of the human species. One posits a single cradle, generally thought to be in Africa, in which Homo sapiens originated. This dominant theory is assisted by its charismatic spokesmodel Eve, a fictitious personification of a DNA strain that some scientists argue indicates a unique source for the Earth's human population. The other, decidedly less popular theory is known as multiregionalism. Multiregionalists argue that populations may have originated in Africa, but these populations migrated to distant regions where the human species developed and took on different characteristics, known to scientists as biological diversity but more conventionally referred to as different races. This divide is obviously controversial, and it is not always the steady eye of science that influences which model is deemed correct (or at least politically correct). After all, one model promises a scientific verification of our common humanity, the other, interpreted too loosely, could result in a scientific rationale that hardens concepts of racial difference.
Anthropological researchers (and husband and wife) Milford Wolpoff and Rachel Caspari have written
Race and Human Evolution as an accessible introduction to the debates over the origins of the human species that makes a careful and detailed case for multiregionalism. Much of the authors' effort is directed at separating their scientifically sound position from the racist legacy of earlier theories of polygenism, which argued that races were genetically isolated. They also mount compelling arguments that the "single source of humanity" camp has succeeded thanks to good marketing rather than hard or conclusive data. Their book proves not only an interesting introduction to anthropological debates, it also reflects the way a scientific thesis is formulated, developed, and defended in the media-savvy late 20th century.
Customer Reviews:
Genetics AND skeletal studies BOTH have their place........2004-11-09
This book accurately portrays the skeletal evidence for human origins, in the context of the Multi-regional theory of human evolution. In this respect it's typical Wolpoff & his usual high standard of excellence, "nuff said. What REALLY needs commentary is the major misconception several reviewer have posted. DNA data has NOT "blown skeletal studies out of the water". We now know that mtDNA AND Y-chromosome lineages ARE HIGHLY subject to natural selection, which means that selective processes CAN (& WILL) cause "lineage replacement" in populations. The multi-regional theory REQUIRES geneflow between regional populations, and even miniscule levels of geneflow will introduce "new" lineages, that can replace the earlier lineages in that population. Selective advantages of as little as hundredths of a percent, and "once in a century" geneflow between adjacent populations, WILL result in total worldwide replacement of lineages within a 100,000-150,000 year period WITHOUT significantly affecting the rest of the genepool. So yes, lineage studies DO "show" that we all share common mtDNA & Y-chromosome ancestors within the last 50-250,000 years (depending on which mutation rate estimate is used), but this actually FITS the predictions of the multi-regional model (for that matter, some mutation rate estimates give calculations that ALLOW descent from regional Homo erectus populations). And.... autosomal DNA studies REVEAL ancient regional population structuring for most genes that goes back as much as a million years, but more recent structuring for other genes, which is ALSO exactly what you'd expect under multi-regionalism's "geneflow & spread of advantageous genes" expectation.... but NOT what would be expected of a human population that recently spread out of Africa. So look at ALL the data INCLUDING BOTH the skeletal (which this book is excellent on) AND the DNA side of things (sadly, I've seen no single comprehensive reference on this aspect) before making up your mind. I suggest you read this book AND search pubmed for scientific papers covering the full spectrum of DNA study interpretations.
Don't waste time - money.......2003-11-14
This book is a rehash of previous statements and out-dated concepts. As one reviewer has already noted, the molecular data and its interpretation (both mtDNA and RNA) makes this book redundant. Also the discussion of the fossil evidence fails to examine issues of function and developmental processes, which can have a significant impact on morphological form. As such, their implied 'evolutionary trends' within and between hominin groups are just as likley the result of convergence - anatomical analogies (i.e., homoplasies)
The dedication says it all:
"To Franz Weidenreich. He understood"
oh, to be a voice in the wilderness....
Required Reading.......2000-10-08
The debate between multiregional evolution vs. the replacement model continues unabated, and naturally, not without certain biases muddling the understanding of the interested lay-reader. Wolpoff and Caspari do an excellent job of presenting the historical foundations for the intellectual biases AND the over-simplified misunderstandings of multiregional evolution perpetuated by the popular media which are responsible for the ongoing confusion regarding this debate. Human evolution is NOT a simple matter easily reduced to one or two easy-to-manage ideas. The replacement model is well addressed in the text and is shown to be easier to comprehend than the multiregional model, which explains the media's favoratism for the former. The technical information provided favoring both views is carefully presented and explained, and the reader is left with the task of making up his/her own mind. An approach of which I approve. Balancing this text with those of Dr. C. Stringer and Prof. Rushton (another review on this site) is recommended for even treatment. Were I teaching a course in paleoanthroplogy, I would certainly make Wolpoff & Caspari's book required reading.
A layman's guide to the multiregional theory.......1997-03-06
To begin with, there is a lot of trash out there posing as explanations of human evolution. Wolpoff and Caspari's book is NOT one of these. The authors take pains to explain what multiregional evolution is NOT, namely, the multiple origin of humanity. Like just about everyone else, they contend that humans originated in Africa. However, they build a persuasive case that (a) there is no such species as Homo erectus, and (b) that the earliest Homo sapiens left Africa some two million years ago. Whether or not one agrees with this scenario, it makes interesting and informative reading, and I believe is a must for anyone interested in the evolution of humanity, for it provides an alternative to the now-popular view that "modern" humans, whatever that may mean, originated late, in Africa and "replaced" everyone else.à
