Customer Reviews:
The most user friendly guide for Florida probate that I have encountered.......2007-02-19
For Floridians, this is a terrific resource for probate of an estate. Simple, straightforward and concise, it gets you where you need to be quickly, and is an instructive primer to review before retaining a probate attorney.
Useful and informative.......2007-02-12
Some of the data my be 4-5 years out of date and the legal forms provided my not be county specific. Still, the book provides very useful information by an experienced Florida attorney, in a clear and well organized fashion.
Recommended.
Good info but accuracy of forms questionable.......2006-08-26
Overall, the guide was informative, but don't use the forms without additional research! The author DOES mention that the forms may not be correct for your particular county. They weren't. Headers, and signature blocks were incorrect for my county (Brevard). I found other examples of the correct documents online and adjusted accordingly. Simple items, such as providing the court with a self-addressed stamped envelope for the return of judgements, seems like info that should have been in the book.

Book Description
The Fiscal Behavior of State and Local Governments presents, in one authoritative volume, Harvey Rosen's considerable contribution to the field of sub-federal public finance in the United States. He investigates how state and locality spending and taxing decisions are influenced by the economic environment in which they operate. This important book begins by examining the fiscal structures of states and localities. The analyses augment traditional models with new economic and political considerations. Rosen investigates the effect of tax structure on the growth of expenditure, the influence of the level of expenditure of neighboring governments, and the impact of the federal income tax on the fiscal structure of state and local governments. He also employs the tools of modern dynamic analysis to shed new light on state and local behavior in an intertemporal setting, using both panel and aggregate data. In addition, he discusses the problems involved in characterizing state tax structure. Finally, he explores a number of methodological issues relating to the theory and econometrics of tax analysis. This book will prove invaluable to economists who specialize in public finance, political economy and public policy.

Hysteria, insomnia, hypochondria, asthma, skin rashes, hay fever, premature baldness, inebriety, nervous exhaustion, brain-collapse--all were symptoms of neurasthenia, the bizarre psychophysiological illness that plagued America's intellectual and economic elite around the turn of the century.
Customer Reviews:
In the Gay 90s they suffered from Neurasthenia.......2001-03-04
This book was a big surprise to me. I did not know that in the late 1800s through the 1920s, the prevaling medical analysis of mental disorder was called neurasthenia. The (pre-)psychological world of the time believed that mental health derived from a balance of nervous energy in the body. Too much? Excitement, hysteria, insanity. Too little? Lethargy, melancholia, death. This non-empirical "science" was White, Anglo-Saxon and Protestant Gentry Male-centric. And the "American" variant of the disease was the worst because of our modern conveniences like trains and telegraphs. 1903 may stand as the epicenter of this medical marvel. Tom Lutz uses examples of 1903 events grouped as anecdotes about public figures like Teddy Roosevelt and Theodore Dressier. This device effectively demonstrates the ubiquity of neurasthenia in people's perceptions of private and public events.
A woman might be prescribed a month in bed drinking milk to combat an excess of nervous energy (ambition?), while her husband might go ride horses out West to lift him out of a professional rut. Sounds fair, right?
The polital conservative movement has roots in the period. "Conservatism" attempted to reuse excess nervous energy by spending excess business income on business expansion. This justified low wages in an early trickle-down mentality.
One caveat - Tom Lutz's writing is incisive and revealing but it's also erudite and scholastic at times. He carefully illuminates the influence of the most important social/medical theory of the time - keep your thinking hat on.

I've Read This Twice, and Will Do So Again.......2005-09-21
This was written in the 80s and revised in the 90s, but television has undergone such a revolutionary shift in its very nature (with hundreds of channels where there were only a few when this was first written) that Marc needs to do a complete rewrite. Even so, the book is still a goldmine of THEORY about how to think about TV: why we watch, what we're seeking when we turn on the tube. Yes, there's some academic jargon, but it's generally a clear and concise look at the dominant medium of our age. He dissects several popular shows and really gets inside the box. There's a little of everything here: history, theory, criticism, sociology. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to understand TV instead of just watching it.

Customer Reviews:
Must have book.......2007-05-15
Everything you ever needed to know about networking. A must have book in hte field of networking. Highely reccomend.
Nice presentation of basics.......2006-08-21
The bad news is that I bought this book to solve a specific problem. 600 pages of text and appendices later, my problem remains unsolved. Nevertheless, this is a good presentation of the basics of home networks. I use a Windows XP Home OS. There was a lot of information specific to my OS. There were also custom comments for those on Windows XP Pro, Windows 98, Mac's etc. The reader level is self-proclaimed as "Beginning to Advanced". It would be more accurate to say "Beginner to Intermediate." If you want to learn the basic concepts of home networking and some "walk me through the commands of setting things up," this is a good reference. It is not an "everything one needs for troubleshooting problems" reference, though.
Not Helpful.......2004-12-26
I was expecting more due to the title. This book tells you what to consider for your network but does little to prepare you for the technical issues you're going to encounter. Its an OK book; but certainly shouldn't be called a "Home Networking Bible" as it really doesn't cover very much in detail...its a wide book but also a shallow one.
Easy understanding.......2004-09-24
Even in the years of the dot com crash, PC usage and upgrading has continued unabated, driven by a still relentless Moore's Law. One huge area of this usage has been the home, and Plumley devotes her book to aiding you. Unlike an office environment, you have no IT staff to delegate the gruntwork to. Just you. And her.
So she carefully goes over enough technical detail to be intelligible and useful to you. Covering the latest Microsoft operating systems, with accompanying details on the Macintosh and linux. As an aside, the fact that she chose to include linux in a book like this speaks eloquently to its rise in a mass consumer market; no longer confined to server side applications.
On your network, she gives extensive information about having a wired or wireless setup. The pros and cons of both. Like a wired net being more secure against evesdropping, and usually having higher bandwidth. But being much more labour intensive to install, and often greater capital costs, compared to having just some WiFi hub. Certainly though, WiFi has been and is one of the bright spots in hi-tech right now, and Plumley walks you through its acronym-filled thicket.
She also does not ignore various other devices that can live on your net. Like a PDA or Xbox. Here is a chance for you to test for yourself some of the fabled convergence of computing and entertainment, about which so much has been postulated and invested by others.
a decent book, but "Networking by Example" is better.......2001-02-23
This book looked pretty good, but I wanted to point out another book, "Networking by Example" by Barry Press which is truly outstanding. This Bible book, as I remember it, contained a lot of information that was specific to Windows 98 and NT as well as protocols and OS's not around anymore. Also, in general the "bible" books tend to be cluttered with more information you don't really need. The home networking bible was helpful, but Networking by Example was much more succinct.
Book Description
A sometimes harrowing, often humorous, and occasionally tragic look at the Marine Corps from the inside out in its struggle with the insurgency in Iraq. Drawing from personal experience in the confusing, deadly conflict currently being fought in the streets and back alleys of Iraqi towns and villages, Danelo focuses on the young Marine leaders--corporals and sergeants--whose job it is to take even younger Marines into battle, close with and destroy an elusive enemy, and bring their boys back home again. Sadly, there are losses, but true to the Marine Corps spirit, they soldier on, earning their blood stripes the only way they know how--the hard way.
Customer Reviews:
Real People, Real War.......2007-10-13
BLOOD STRIPES, as you learn in the book, are the red stripes that an NCO in the Marine Corps is permitted to wear on the outside of their blue pants. You also learn how they came about - and I'm not going to give it away. What I will say is that this book teaches you things about the Marine Corps and the men who are the backbone of the Corps - the Grunts - that you could only learn by going through boot camp. You feel like you are living the war with them and you come to care deeply for and about them. These are REAL People, with all their bravado, fears, warts and deep humanity. You come to understand the "brotherhood" of the Corps. Most of all you understand the disconnect between those who politically support or oppose wars and those who fight them.
The best book I have read in a long, long time. Buy it - READ it!
Bobby Michaels
blood stripes.......2007-06-02
the best book on the realities of marines fighting in Iraq. A gripping account of NCO'S living and managing a war in a hostile environment
A Moving, Gritty, Inspiring Book.......2007-03-25
Read this book, and you will have a better understanding of why the warriors who make up the United States Marine Corps are the elite fighting force they are. After reading this, I came to realize that I could never fully understand what it takes to become the "true" warrior, but it also made me thank God that we have them, and that they are there ready at all times to fight for us. This book is hard to read, in that the true lives of Marines in battle, under fire in less than optimum conditions, with brothers wounded or dying with alarming frequency, are all right there for the reader to deal with. It can sometimes be informative, even funny, but mostly heart-wrenching as the battles, which are being fought for us, hit home. Read this book, but be prepared to deal with emotions you maybe didn't realize existed within yourself.
A fascinating read.......2007-03-02
This gripping book brings the reader straight onto the ground in Iraq. A timely and important story, and a great read
A worthwhile read........2006-09-25
I picked this book up because Steven Pressfield's name was on it (he wrote the foreword). It's no Pressfield novel and I can't say that it's a particularly well written book, but Danelo does offer an important perspective - that of combat marines during the first battle of Fallujah. He relates the lifestyle and experiences of marines on the ground in Iraq and touches briefly on the effect of media and politics on the early stages of the war. I had hoped that more stress would have been placed upon the latter, but Danelo's book is primarily a relation of various marine's accounts of life and battle in Iraq. Throughout, he paints an admirable and fairly candid picture of marine combat forces. All in all, it's a decent book, though a little heavy on comparisons to scenes from movies.

A pioneering study.......2000-04-17
In his book Shelley Wachsmann furnishes an original and pioneering study on the situation of the Levant seas in the Bronze Age. Beginning from the Predinastic Nile Valley, analyzes the navy of the levant cultures (Syro-Canaanite Littoral, Cyprus, Aegean area, Minoan/Cycladic navy, Mycenean/Achean navy, Sea Peoples) looking for the archaeological and documental comparisons , even not neglecting the possible collations between the different areas. In the second part of the study, the author examine the aspects of maritime activities, departing from the ships construction and navigation to arrive up to the seas laws. A valuable glossary and a very ample bibliography conclude this really exhaustive text, suited for whoever is really interested to the nautical archaeology and the navigation in the ancient Mediterranean.

Book Description
Recent years have seen a remarkable expansion of knowledge about the anatomical organization of the part of the brain known as the basal ganglia, the signal processing that occurs in these structures, and the many relations both to molecular mechanisms and to cognitive functions. This book brings together the biology and computational features of the basal ganglia and their related cortical areas along with select examples of how this knowledge can be integrated into neural network models.
Organized in four parts - fundamentals, motor functions and working memories, reward mechanisms, and cognitive and memory operations - the chapters present a unique admixture of theory, cognitive psychology, anatomy, and both cellular- and systems- level physiology written by experts in each of these areas. The editors have provided commentaries as a helpful guide to each part.
Many new discoveries about the biology of the basal ganglia are summarized, and their impact on the computational role of the forebrain in the planning and control of complex motor behaviors discussed. The various findings point toward an unexpected role for the basal ganglia in the contextual analysis of the environment and in the adaptive use of this information for the planning and execution of intelligent behaviors. Parallels are explored between these findings and new connectionist approaches to difficult control problems in robotics and engineering.
