In the early 1960s, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater was a small, multi-racial company of dancers that performed the works of its founding choreographer and other emerging artists. By the late 1960s, the company had become a well-known African American artistic group closely tied to the Civil Rights struggle. In Dancing Revelations, Thomas DeFrantz chronicles the troupe's journey from a small modern dance company to one of the premier institutions of African American culture. He not only charts this rise to national and international renown, but also contextualizes this progress within the civil rights, women's rights, and gay rights struggles of the late 20th century. DeFrantz examines the most celebrated Ailey dances, including Revelations, drawing on video recordings of Ailey's dances, published interviews, oral histories, and his own interviews with former Ailey company dancers. Through vivid descriptions and beautiful illustrations, DeFrantz reveals the relationship between Ailey's works and African American culture as a whole. He illuminates the dual achievement of Ailey as an artist and as an arts activist committed to developing an African American presence in dance. He also addresses concerns about how dance performance is documented, including issues around spectatorship and the display of sexuality, the relationship of Ailey's dances to civil rights activism, and the establishment and maintenance of a successful, large-scale Black Arts institution. Patrick J. Sauer has compiled 100 of the most offbeat cases presented in Court TV, cases ranging from the silly to the preposterous, from complex to intriguing, & has left it to the Reader to judge how a case should be decided.

The various cases presented tickle the legal/judicial mind of the reader, & though presented in a humorous style, it showcases how our judicial system falters in many an occasion. Cases presented include a charge of assault against Bill Cosby by an unwelcome paparazzo; parents of a boy suing a store owner where a soda machine fell on their son & killed him, while he was trying to steal soda from it, & a preposterous trial of a woman who sued her employers for putting her in a room with a co-worker suffering from excessive flatulence.

The compilation is witty & wide-ranging, from civil law & torts to privacy & anti-trust laws. Most such books do not rise above that of anecdotal rehashing. Good works on satire & humour in law are scarce. Save for Leland Gregory's Presumed Ignorant, a classic compilation of funny & dumb decisions taken by our legislators & judges, & Eric Choodak's (Ed.) It Takes Two Judges to Try A Cow and Other Strange Legal Twists, about the quirks & flaws of the legal system, there have been few books that rise above the sensational anecdote. Honor, Courage, and Commitment.......2007-09-21

I recommend this book for any parent who wants to experience their Navy Recruit's experience in the Training Recruit Command Program at Great Lakes (Boot Camp. It made me feel closer to my son and made the "Pass In Review" graduation ceremony more meaningful, having read the book.

Disappointed.......2007-08-24

Enjoyed reading the book, howver it is quite obvious special attention was awarded to the recruits while Leahy was there observing Great Lakes to write this book. I just had a son graduate on August 10, 2007 and trust me things are quite different than the book portrays.

This was my division that the book was written about. DIVISION 005. At the time I wasnt married and my name was Michelle Gray. There is a pic or 2 of me in the book. I went through bookcamp from OCT 2000-Dec 2000. Mr Leahy was there with us every day from sun up to sun down. I only recently got the book to read and it brang back sooo many memories. I think this book is great for anyone wondering how bootcamp will be. Even though things have changed alot through the yrs most of bootcamp is the same. Bootcamp has gotten easier and you get more sleep at night now!!!! If anyone needs any info or wants to know anything about bootcamp you can email me with any questions. Hoor, Courage, Commitment: Navy Boot Camp.......2007-06-11

Wonderful account of what to expect for my son who will leave for Great Lakes in 2 weeks. Received book on Friday and did not put it down until I finished it today. The other members of the family will be reading this also. From what friends who have been in the Navy have related, this is a very accurate picture of life as a recruit.

Every future sailor in the DEP (Delayed Enlistment Program) should read this book, as should their parents and other loved ones. It provides a detailed account of the Navy Boot Camp experience, following one division from arrival to graduation. A very well written, entertaining read; each of us in our family who read it found it hard to put down once we'd started it.

This book is the first of a projected series of five which aims to analyse the process of momentous and long-term change which came with the Islamization of the regions which the Arabs called al-Hind, that is, India, and large parts of its Indianized hinterland. The series is set up in a chronological order, starting with the early expansion of the Caliphate in the seventh and eight centuries and ending with the beginnings of European colonization. In this millennium of Islamic expansion five successive stages are distinguished, taking into account the world-historical context.

Each stage is covered by a separate volume. This first volume covers the period of the seventh to eleventh centuries, the early medieval period in which the Islamic Middle East acquires economic supremacy while establishing new links between the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean.

Subsequent volumes will cover the periods of the eleventh to thirteenth centuries (volume 2), the fourteenth to fifteenth centuries (3), the sixteenth to seventeenth centuries (4), and the eighteenth century (5).

They've done it again!.......2001-07-20

Cris Peterson and Alvis Upitis have done it again!! This book combines well-written text with gorgeous pictures. It shows the importance of draft horses in the early 20th century in agriculture in the United States. This should be in every primary classroom to show kids how far we have come in 100 years. Mrs. Peterson writes clearly and in simple language for children to understand tough concepts.

Charming historical fiction horse story........2004-09-23

When her family immigrates from Germany to Minnesota in 1880, eleven-year-old Erika Meyer has a great deal of difficulty adjusting to her new life. She has trouble with learning to speak English, and none of the other girls at school her age are willing to try and be friends with her. Because she doesn't know English well, some of the other children think she is stupid, and even play cruel pranks on her. Erika's only friend is her family's dependable Clydesdale horse, Silky. As Christmas approaches, Erika fears the holiday will not be a happy one. But with the help of Silky, maybe, just maybe, she can turn her fortunes around and make it a merry Christmas for her family after all.

I enjoyed reviewing this book for my library. For the young reader who wants a well-written, fast paced, tale of love of family and heritage and the timeless quest of seeking friendship and acceptance will remember the good feeling this story evokes long after the last page is read. The "Facts about the Breed" section will be appreciated since the reader will undoubtedly form a bond with the Clydesdale horse Silky and want to learn all about the breed.

Arusha National Park in northern Tanzania, known for its scenic beauty, is also a battleground. Roderick Neumann's illuminating analysis shows how this park embodies all the political-ecological dilemmas facing protected areas throughout Africa. The roots of the ongoing struggle between the park on Mount Meru and the neighboring Meru peasant communities go much deeper, in Neumann's view, than the issues of poverty, population growth, and ignorance usually cited. These conflicts reflect differences that go back to the beginning of colonial rule. By imposing a European ideal of pristine wilderness, Neumann says, the establishment of national parks and protected areas displaced African meanings as well as material access to the land. He focuses on the symbolic importance of natural landscapes among various social groups in this setting and how it relates to conflicts between peasant communities and the state.
