Unique! A masterful marriage of humor and cooking..........1998-11-27
The recipes are wonderful and easy to prepare and ladled with delicious humor. These women certainly know how to make you laugh and also prepare a mean meal. I am buying some as gifts for some of my girlfriends in need of happier yet less healthy and durable husbands. This book shows you that cooking can be fun, even if your husband is not...
Recipies to die for!.......1998-11-25
You'll die laughing and kill him with kindness if you actually prepare these ethnically excellent recipies. The perfect gift for a newlywed planning ahead or for adding spice to an old relationship. Delicious humor makes cooking fun!

Book Description
"Works on the German Catholic subculture are few and far between. This book is based on extensive research into archival and published primary sources. It should be of interest to a wide variety of historians concerned with German history, cultural history, and the history of religion." Jonathan Sperber, University of Missouri, Columbia
"The conflict between organized religion and the emergence of modernist thought is not new. This study particularizes one important chapter in that conflict: the disparity between the Catholic cultural movement and its secular counterpart in Germany during the period of the Kulterkampf and the years preceding the ascent of the Nazi party. At a time when certain religious sects are animating world-wide disturbance, this account of another cultural struggle based on differing religious perceptions is remarkably pertinent." R. Kathleen Molz, Columbia University
Margaret Stieg Dalton offers a comprehensive study of the German Catholic cultural movement that lasted from the late nineteenth century until 1933. Rapidly advancing industrialization, higher literacy rates, rising real income, and increased leisure time created a demand for intellectually accessible entertainment. Technological developments gave rise not only to new forms of entertainment, but also to the means by which they were marketed and disseminated. At the same time, the effects of modernism were being felt in all areas of high culture. Dalton's book examines the encounter of clergy and lay Catholics with both high culture and popular culture in Germany.

A must for Odd Couple fans.......2005-04-28
This is a very in-depth, fun compendium on The Odd Couple. The author's writing style was very relaxed and friendly. He came across as a friendly fellow fan who did an impressive amount of research. He did not come across as an annoying, stalking sycophant as often happens with fan books. I especially enjoyed the section where he interviewed all the principles...he got memoirs from just about everybody from Jack and Tony all the way down to Richard Stahl and even both Edna's.
This book is now over 20 years old and sadly it's out of print. Author Rip Stock, if you are still alive and reading this, could you somehow get this back in print and update it?? Thanks for a great book, it brings back a lot of memories. So many of us grew up watching this show every night at 11pm on channel 11 in the NY area.
Great Memories.......2000-12-09
Interviews with all the actors, fun-to-read plot summaries, all kinds of historical info, even trivia games and quizzes. The best thing is that Rip Stock doesn't try to one-up the show's writers, but lets this great show speak for itself. If you are an Odd Couple Maniac, "Odd Couple Mania" will be a great favorite of yours. Very highly recommended!!!!
Odd couple book.......1999-11-26
This book was not an enjoyable read for me at all. It told me nothing new that I have not heard in other interviews on tv talk shows with the people involved. While the book was able to express to the reader that the author is a fan of the show it failed to raise your knowledge of how the show operated behind the scenes. It just sounds like one big fan letter. If you are like me and collect books about how your favorite shows were created then buy this one only because it is the only one I have found about the Odd Couple tv series. Other wise I can't recommend this book.

A competent, well-written, friendly textbook.......2007-04-13
I'm a tough grader, and four stars from me is doing very well! The bottom line is that this book is well organised, written clearly, and discusses a moderately difficult subject pleasantly and with competency.
The book fitted my background. I started programming in 1959, became proficient in FORTRAN by the mid 60's, added BASIC and LOGO when I bought my first computer a decade later, used HyperCard while it was being supported, dabbled in PASCAL, and learned too little C before retiring in 1996. When I bought this book, my last programming was ten years behind me, and modern computer languages weren't in my repertory at all.
I like a textbook approach -- clear exposition with plenty of examples, followed by problems to solve -- and Kochan provided just that. Often the examples preceded the exposition, and that worked fine, too. I prided myself on solving all the chapter-ending problems without looking at any of the solutions, and the book equipped me to do that, although a few problems in the later chapters took me a long time. Very occasionally I encountered typographical errors, but, almost always, what I had learned from the book allowed me to proceed. The point is not that there were typos here and there -- what technical manual is without them -- but that the book itself kept them from becoming an obstacle.
From the end of Chapter 4 I was able to begin using what I had learned, actually putting AppleScript to work. That provided motivation to go on and finish the book, which took three months, incidentally.
The book has an attractive layout and is blessed with an excellent table of contents, a comprehensive index, and a short list of other resources, all features of a well-written text, and all too often omitted.
Still, four stars, not five. Why? Had I bought the book when it was published in 2005, rather than in January of 2007, I might well have given five stars, but writing about current programming techniques, especially when referring to other programs -- essential in teaching AppleScript -- is aiming at a moving target, and as the author indicated would happen, the target had moved on. An example in Chapter 11 using iDVD that a 2005 reviewer praised doesn't work on the newer version of iDVD on my computer, and the gap was too big for me to bridge. Kochan warned that two web-service examples in Chapter 13 might not remain available, and one of them is gone now. Despite these glitches, both Chapter 11 and Chapter 13 are well worth reading and studying, but each has lost a useful example.
The book was unable to teach me the crontab feature in Chapter 13. I have not figured out whether a misprint, something outdated, or my own incompetence is responsible.
The publisher, Wiley, provides an errata list for the textbook on line and provides a place there to post questions; however, the site is also dated and did not help me. Most of the errata listed there came from me.
A principal purpose of AppleScript is to enable users to make more efficient use of other programs, such as Adobe PhotoShop and Apple iTunes, to name just two. This cannot be done in an elementary textbook, and Kochan illustrates what might be attempted without pretending to teach you to do it. On page 556 he cites "AppleScript, the Definitive Guide," by Matt Neuburg, saying: "This book explains many of the intricacies of the AppleScript language and is the recommended follow-up to the book you hold in your hands." I plan to find out. Neuburg's book, incidentally, wasn't suited to introduce me to AppleScript when I attempted to read it first.
The bits of outdated material listed above should not discourage you from buying and profiting from "Beginning AppleScript." I do not know a better place to start.
It's About Time, and It's a Good Book.......2005-01-30
It's interesting to see just how powerful AppleScript has become. Initially scripting languages were not well suited for general purpose programming because they lacked too many features and/or were too inefficient. Both of these constraints have gone away. Computers are so powerful, the inefficiency doesn't matter. And the languages have gotten enough features that in many cases AppleScript works just fine as a solution to a general programming problem.
It's about time for this book. Up until now the information about AppleScript has been thin. Now this tutorial has been published to explain the use of the language. I like Mr. Kochan's writing style. He starts off having you write a program. If you type it the way he says, the program has a bug in it. (Kind of like my programs.) That way, about the first thing you see is how AppleScript reports an error. With that out of the way, you can move on to learning the language.
It's quite a comprehensive book, talking about things like classes of variables, there's quite a bit on string manipulation. Of course all the usual things like logic, loops, files and so on. He saves the description of AppleScript Studio until the end of the book, that way you learn more about the language itself and are ready when Studio comes in to help make the task so much easier.
Good, up-to-date starting point.......2005-01-10
Frankly the pickings for Applescript books is pretty slim. To have a new book on the subject is a welcome surprise. I would have preferred that the book had more exposition in relation to the amount of code, but that's a small gripe with what is otherwise a well written book. The basics are covered from the syntax of the language and the tools, to file management and logging. Then the author discusses scripting the common iLife applications. This is where I appreciated the up-to-date information as the other book on Applescript from O'Reilly is badly in need of an update.
I would have preferred some additional information on Applescript Studio, as this is an exciting new development for Applescript. But that is also a minor grip.
A must buy for those interested in a starting point for scripting their OS X box.
Finally a book about AppleScript.......2004-12-22
Finally a book about AppleScript that's not just for professionals. This book is for all Mac users that want to have some fun and learn how to write AppleScript programs. Kochan uses tons of examples and shows how to do some fun things, like write a guessing game, or write a program that says "Good morning" (or whatever is appropriate for the time of day). His iLife chapter shows how to write iTunes programs, and how to do things like make a photo album or DVD from a folder full of photos. This book rocks!

Book Description
The Scud missile was developed as the centerpiece of Soviet plans to fight nuclear war in the heart of Europe. However, it was never used in its intended role and has instead become a symbol of the changing nature of warfare in the aftermath of the Cold War. Saddam Hussein's Iraqi armed forces were almost helpless in the face of the Coalition forces in the 1991 Gulf War; the only weapon that Iraq could use to injure the Coalition forces was its arsenal of Scud missiles. This book explores the development and variants of the missile and its launch systems, its proliferation outside of the West, and its role in conflicts around the world.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent book on Scuds.......2007-08-08
It's very difficult to find books on this topic, which is really a shame considering the impact these missiles had during Gulf War I and their potential in Gulf War II. Zaloga does a great job with this book.
Excellent read on one of the world's most infamous missles.......2007-05-03
The Scud missle gained notoriety during the 1991 Gulf War. Here it is displayed in all its glory. The authors went through painstaking detail to explain the history behind the delivery and technical aspects of this weapon. Explains what makes the Scud tick as well as its development history and primary deployment tactics.
So for anyone interested in ballistic missles or the history behind the Scud, this book's for you.
Good material, but thin.......2006-11-11
Steven Zaloga is top notch at what he does and a good book on the Scud missile is long overdue, given the fact that it is one of the few powerful weapons that has been used somewhat successfully against American forces, and given that it is operated by so many armies. This is a good basic overview of the Scud. However, I was disappointed that there wasn't more to this book. It seems rather thin even by the standards of this series. I wanted a little more meat.
Another Zaloga Classic.......2006-09-22
For anyone wanting more info on the Scuds this Zaloga masterpiece has it - also with excellent art work

A good House of Windsor survey.......2005-08-16
Decline and Fall of the House of Windsor could best be summarized as a survey class on the British Monarchy from Queen Victoria to the present. A interesting trashy read indeed, but along the way Spoto recounts stories both well known and relatively unknown, rehabilitating somewhat forgotten figures such as Queen Alexandra and recasting familiar subjects such as Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother and Wallis Simpson in a different light. Spoto is adept at pointing out major breaches of protocol if not outright violations of the British Constitution made by King George VI, the Queen Mother, and Queen Elizabeth II along the way. Spoto is able to explain some of the arcane rituals of the monarchy, peerage, royalty, and nobility in a comprehensible and easy to understand manner. His coverage of the Wallis Simpson affair involving the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII) is particularly well told and perhaps the most engaging chapters in the book.
Nowhere near as vindictive or hateful as Kitty Kelly's The Royals (1997) Decline and Fall of the House of Windsor is well researched and well annotated but is a bit out of date. Since its publication Princess Diana, the Queen Mother, and Princess Margaret have all died as have other figures such as Princess Alice. Spoto leaves us with the image of Diana and Prince William and Prince Harry enjoying the Magic Kingdom at Disney World and posits that may be the closest they come to an actual Kingdom, but the events that have transpired since then seem to have changed things. Decline and Fall of the House of Windsor is handy ammunition for Republican sentiments and won't be well received by ardent monarchists, but along the way it renders its subjects more human and less regal. Spoto's fair, frank, and honest assessment of the Windsors, faults and all is certainly one of the better books written on the royals. While his assessment of the future of the monarchy is bleak the events since that time seem to indicate a somewhat happier future. But it is evident that light has indeed been allowed in on the magic and the spell that bound subjects to sovereigns has indeed been broken.
One of the better overviews of royal history.......1999-08-03
I have read several House of Windsor histories but few make as much sense of Edward VIII and George VI as this one. I'd recommend this book to others because it is a good explanation why the present royal family is what it is today.
Not for those who worship the Windsors.......1999-07-09
Donald Spoto is an American. By that I mean that he approaches a subject - royalty - with a skeptical eye, never forgetting that he is a citizen of a country whose entire political system was designed to prevent a monarchy from being established. This attitude stands in refreshing contrast to the bulk of American writing on the Windsors, who seem to stimulate some atavistic longing for royalty on the part of writers who should know better (see the review immediately below for a fairly typical complaint obviously rooted in Windsor-worship). Kitty Kelly's recent THE ROYALS is similar in its irreverence for the superhuman panoply of royalty. Spoto, however, is a far better writer than Kelly. As several other reviewers have commented, Spoto's previous works have been biographies of Hollywood celebrities, and this book extends and refines Spoto's musings on the history and implications of modern society's obsession with media-generated fame. The overarching theme of this book is celebrity as an intrusive phenomenon that is slowly stripping the Windsors of their ancient royal mystique, a glamour which requires distance from the masses to remain viable. Spoto generates a certain amount of sympathy in the reader for the tribulations of what one realizes, after all, are a very ordinary (perhaps even downright mediocre) group of human beings who have done little to merit the attention so relentlessly thrust upon them by the media and their (it must be said) fans and followers. That said, Spoto, with his gift for creating vivid impressions of personalities with a few concise phrases, leaves the reader with a very unpleasant picture of a family gone seriously awry psychologically and dominated by a line of mean, selfish and grasping women who keep their weak male relatives on a very tight leash (all of which may be hallmarks of dynasties in decadence). The most heartbreaking sections of the book deal with the present Queen mother's repulsive treatment of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and will certainly make the reader think twice when he or she sees the next photograph of the smiling, befrilled, Dowager Queen Mary, for an iron heart lies behind that mask of "sweet little old lady." Equally affecting is Spoto's history of the "Diana years." He depicts a family ruthlessly using a teenage girl as a brood mare, then becoming vindictive when she refused to do exactly what they told her to do. In fact, the activities of the entire clan in recent years, as reported by Spoto, cast serious doubt on their fitness for the role their birth has expected them to play. I was unable to avoid a certain feeling of contempt for these people and their ridiculous courtiers. Spoto's book enables us to see the Windsors for what they really are - the living exemplars of feudalism, still undead as we enter the 21st century. As such, they are a useless anachronism and deserve to go. Kudos to Spoto for daring to write a sharp, well-documented book that pulls no punches!
Trash.......1999-03-24
The reviewer who wrote: "There is just enough information to really get to know the characters without getting bogged down with too much detail" pretty much sums it up. How do you get to know people and still avoid details? Thus the flaw in this type of trash. Save your money. If you want to get to know Queen Mary, read Anne Edward's biography.
Mr. Spoto brings the royal past back to life........1998-05-30
Was the most interesting book I have ever read on Britains royal family. The facts are stated in such a way that the reader is never bored. There is just enough information to really get to know the characters without getting bogged down with too much detail.

Neuroscientists claim to understand the roots of human personality and behaviour, of language and even of consciousness itself. Can they cure Alzheimer’s? Can human behaviour be controlled with drugs? Rose explores these claims via the evolutionary route.

Reactionary grumblings against transhumanism.......2006-12-19
In the first chapter, Steven Rose positions his book as a critique of the transhumanist agenda from the perspective of a professional neuroscientist. From the outset Rose paints a picture of himself as a serious scientist - a wise elder - cautioning the world against the dangerous quackery that arises when scientists from other, "less-qualified" disciplines, such as psychology, computer science, or evolutionary biology, have the impudence to start speculating about the human condition. The patronising way he deals with the entire subject of memetics in a single-paragraph put-down -- ".. the notion of so-called memes ... now taken seriously by many who should know better" tipifies the tone of the entire book.
This is not a book that builds up a coherent rational thesis about the brain or transhumanism. Instead, Rose prefers to rant at sociobiology and transhumanism by picking easy, isolated, targets for ridicule. Whilst some of his points are good, and serve to expose some of the hype around short-term promises of pharmacalogical utopia, on the bigger issues of whether some form of transhumanism is desirable or possible in-principle, he essentialy indulges in straw-man rhetoric.
Overall, Rose makes it clear that he really doesn't like this silly transhumanist stuff very much, but fails to tackle the big issues in any profound way.
British Publication.......2006-01-28
In response to the ill-informed reviewer who thinks that this "duplicate" publication indicates Steven Rose's academic dishonesty: this is simply the British publication. Isn't it common knowledge that publication rights differ between the U.S. and Britain?
From neuroscience to neurotechnology.......2005-09-29
As the brain is a complicated object - books on it tend to
be either completely engulfed in neuroscientific lingo and details or very popular, over-simplistic. Steven Rose strikes a nice balance between the two.
The book begins with a an evolutionary story starting from proto-cells in the pre-biotic soup to axons, dendrites, synapses and brain "modules" A brilliant tour I might add.
Lots of details and insights that I found a joy to read.
Throughout it is stressed that the brain's developmental history
is made in interaction with the environment to determine what it is going to be, how it works and why. Even though the subject matter is very complex Steven Rose manages to give the needed overview.
Sometimes Steven Rose pops up with strong views on subjects I would have thought to be widely accepted. E.g. Personally I don't agree that Richard Dawkins meme-theory is as bad as Steven Rose makes it out to be - one could argue that the evolutionary idea is for biological things, not for meme ideas, but I wouldn't be upset if someone would say that evolution works fine on memes as well. But nevermind, it won't distract you from the overall narrative.
The last chapters are devoted to a human future where neuroscience might become neurotechnology for mending and manipulating the mind. Even though much of it is speculative Steven Rose seems to be able to tell science from science fiction, and therefore be a valuable voice in the debate.
I haven't read "The Future of the Brain", also by Steven Rose, so I wouldn't be able to tell, if they are identical - but I can tell you that this book is a brilliant read!

Same old book, retitled!.......2005-08-11
Except for the cover and title page: This book is identical to Rose, "The Future of the Brain" -- chapter by chapter, page by page, line by line, word by word, even typo by typo. When I was at UCLA, such a double publication by a faculty member led to demotion, and serious thought about breaking the tenure rule in order to fire the miscreant. Bye-bye Steven Rose!

From one Alaskan Viking to another.......1999-12-10
Keith sums up the very reason I moved to Alaska in the summer of '98. The book tugs at you like the land does up here. It inspires me to take the path less travled. My only hope is, that I have half the heart Keith does, when I go on my Alaska viking. I am very fortunate, in that I have an autographed copy of the book. Signed by Keith at the 1994 Portland, Oregon Sportsman show. Great man and even better book!
Very Very Good.......1998-11-19
This is a great book on the life and times in Alaska. He has done a great job in relaying his story to the reader. I personal have two copies and my first copy has been read so many times, the pages are falling out. Check it out. It's worth the money and the time for it to come :O)
