Book Description
This volume examines current trends in social security programs around the world. An international group of contributors provide (1) historical perspectives on the development of social security programs (looking at the U.S., Japan, and South Korea); (2) national overviews of programs as adapted to specific populations (in Indonesia, the Philippines, China, Zimbabwe, Yugoslavia, and Malaysia); and (3) specific program analyses (long term care in Britain, health care in Sweden, and industrial accident benefits as developed in Brazil). The discussions highlight the need to evaluate the impact of social security programs on the general population, as well as on specific population groups. This work will be of interest to scholars and policy-makers in social welfare and public policy.
Book Description
Financing Federal Systems provides a comprehensive selection of Edward M. Gramlich's essays, which have made a major contribution to public finance and macroeconomics over three decades. The structure of fiscal federalism is a major issue in most countries around the world. Developed economies are continually confronting the question of fiscal federalism as they consider harmonizing tax and trading arrangements. Emerging market economies are addressing these issues as they organize systems to promote growth and development. The book begins with a new introduction by the author which provides a clear and concise overview of the current issues in fiscal federalism. The book comprises some 23 papers and features empirical, theoretical and diagnostic work together with comprehensive evaluations of the fiscal federal systems in the United States, Australia, Sweden and Canada. It includes work on state and local government behavior, grant policies, macroeconomic policies, state tax limitations, federal tax policy, sub-national fiscal policy, infrastructure investment and public welfare policies. Financing Federal Systems will complement graduate and undergraduate courses in public finance and fiscal federalism. It will also appeal to policy makers and local government practitioners.

Book Description
Recasting Ritual explores how ritualized action diversifies in response to varying cultural, political and physical contexts. The contributors look at how issues such as globalization and technology affect ritual performance and how minorities often utilize performances to affirm their own identities while also speaking to outsiders.
The contributors examine the relationship between ritual meaning and social identity through case studies drawn from the Pacific, Scandinavia, the Mediterranean, Latin America, Indonesia, and East and West Africa. Study of the theoretical underpinnings of social action affirms the independence of anthropology as a discipline from cultural, media and performance studies, according it a distinctive role in elucidating contemporary and emergent human conditions.
Customer Reviews:
excellent guide to an excellent series.......2000-07-14
As a fan of many tv scifi series, I am usually skeptical of unauthorized guides. They typically contain little behind the scenes information and are often riddled with factual errors. However, this one makes for a fun read and is crammed with trivia, minutiae and all sorts of wonderful details for the avid b5 nitpicker. My only complaint is that, because it was written before the 4th season had concluded, some of the speculation on the arc and certain of the series' many signs and portents now seems superfluous. If you want a guide you can page through while sitting in front of your tv, this one has everything.
Don't waste your money on this........1999-08-08
It's breaks no new ground. Instead, view the pages of The Lurker's Guide -- It's online, it's free, it's more comprehensive, doesn't contain as many errors, and doesn't set an agenda like this book does.
The author says B5 is a great presentation, but 'disses' JMS and the series every chance he gets. I notice Lane is a SF writer himself -- maybe he is jealous of the world that JMS created and that he didn't think of something as good.
There is a supplemental book that covers the episodes not contained in the first book. I bought both of them at the same time. Wish I had bought and read the first book first, then decided whether to buy the second. I wouldn't have bought the second.
The only redeeming thing in this book is the section "Ivanova's Life Lessons".
An all around treasure for any Babylon 5 fan........1999-04-13
I believe that this book is a book for anyone. If you're just starting to watch the show, or if you have been a fan from the begining, this has fun facts for all. However, there are a few mistakes in the episode descriptions, but that's it. It is a book that has a purpose, to enlighten any B5 fan with new facts, and a different outlook on the arc.
Fabulous for catching up on arc or just having fun!.......1999-03-16
This book gives you summaries of episodes divided by plotline, plot A, B, C. It also gives you the Koshisms of that episode! Tells you what, if anything, concerned the arc in that episode. Only problem, doens't go through all seasons. I literally couldn't put this book down!
A great Babylon 5 "Beginning of season 4" Reference Book.......1999-01-19
Against:
Reference only until the beginning of the 4th season. It was up to date when released but now a new version should be writed.
It has some episodes number quotations wrong but its not any problem for a B5 fan reader and the others will not notice.
For:
Do you want to know the name off all ships that appear in the episodes ?
Do you want to cross check episodes ?
"Koshtations" and the Yvanova "life lessons" are a must read.
It focus not only the good parts of the serie but also the "bugs" it had (That's why is "Unauthorised")
Overall:
A fan choice if no full independent reference source is available.
Book Description
By using the same back-end macro programming language, Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), Microsoft Office applications allow users to easily transfer their VBA programming skills from one Office product to another. A developer who is skilled at using VBA to program Access can quickly learn to program Word or Excel. Better still, VBA is a fairly complete subset of Visual Basic (VB). That means a Visual Basic developer already knows how to use VBA and a VBA programmer knows a lot about Visual Basic. In addition to this large body of shared information, learning to program Office applications requires that the developer understand each application's specific features. For example, to write VBA code for Microsoft Word, the developer must understand Word's capabilities and how to make Word do useful things. Unfortunately most VB and VBA books assume the reader is learning to program from scratch. They ignore the large amount of VBA programming information that is shared by the applications and they teach all of the details starting with the basics. A programmer who wants to learn how to program several Office applications must buy separate books for each application with a huge amount of overlap. Microsoft Office Programming: A Guide for Experienced Developers covers only the material not shared by all of the Office applications. It focuses on the more advanced techniques that start where the other books' VBA tutorials end. It explains how to link the applications together using OLE, how to manipulate each application with VBA code, and how to make the applications work together by controlling each other.
Download Description
- Starts where other VBA tutorials end
- Covers the material not shared by all of the Office applications
- Shows how to use multiple Office applications together to build integrated solutions
- For experienced, serious coders
By using the same back-end macro programming language, Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), Microsoft Office applications allow users to easily transfer their VBA programming skills from one Office product to another. A developer who is skilled at using VBA to program Access can quickly learn to program Word or Excel. Better still, VBA is a fairly complete subset of Visual Basic (VB). Currently, if you want to learn how to program several Office applications, you must buy separate books for each application with a huge amount of overlap. Even worse, these books will assume you have absolutely no experience with programming.
Microsoft Office Programming: A Guide for Experienced Developers explains how to link the applications together using OLE, how to manipulate each application with VBA code, and how to make the applications work together by controlling each other.

Mix and match MS Office.......2006-11-10
This book is the book you need to get you going when you want to use two or more office applications in your own home brewed apps. This book doesn't drag you through learning the basics of VBA but, takes you straight to the meat and potatoes of office development. Shows you the differences in the object models and ways you can use those differences.
It helped me restructure a few access applications to add value and greater functionality to them in my organization. I learned how I could use Excel as a report writer using preformated workbooks and the same with Word. If you want to know more about meshing office apps together without reading through material you already know then this is the book you need.
If you're not an Idiot or a Dummy.......2004-07-26
Microsoft has done an excellent job of integrating its Office suite of products. So if you are familiar with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), you can use it to programmatically perform tasks within each Office product, like Excel, Word or Powerpoint. Or, within one of these products, you can write an application that can invoke an instance of another program.
Within one book, Stephens shows an efficient and unified way to learn how to do all this, and more. The trick is to be able to use VBA as a macro programming language. This is the key to understanding and using MS Office as a coherent entity. Ultimately, Stephens suggests that it is quicker than learning how to program each product on a case-by-case basis.
Stephens cheerfully dumps on other texts that call you an idiot or dummy. (If you know what I mean.) He unabashedly expects you to be conversant in VB or VBA. To be specific, he doesn't waste time going over the elementary syntactical points of VBA. So you don't have to thumb through these pages in idle frustration. He drags you rapidly into non-trivial coding explanations of how to use VBA to get at MS Office.
Book Description
This diligently documented book shows that neither the internment of ethnic Japanese--not to mention ethnic Germans and Italians--nor the relocation and evacuation of Japanese Americans from the West Coast were the result of war hysteria or race prejudice as historians have taught us.
Customer Reviews:
Refuted by Ken Burns' "The War".......2007-10-07
Ken Burns' PBS production, "The War", absolutely refutes this garbage. Malkin is repugnant and ridiculous. I know Japanese Americans whose families experienced this violation of the Constitution (such as "due process"). No, I did not buy this diatribe and nonsense; I read portions of it at the bookstore because good, reasonable and intelligent people should not patronize seriously flawed authors, such as Malkin, Ann Coulter, David Horowitz et al with their hatred and outrageous invectives. One should NOT ever pay attention to her opinion. She has lost all credibility.
Bigotry Sells.......2007-10-07
Michelle Malkin conducted absolutely no scholarly research in the writing of this ridiculous book. She argued that Japan controlled the entire Pacific Ocean, maintained a vast network of spies in the US, and planned to invade the West Coast. Through subterfuge and falsification of information, she thus concluded that internment camps were not morally reprehensible because they were of military necessity and because, in her mind, racism did not exist during the 1940s.
Fortunately, Eric Muller, a law professor at UNC -- Chapel Hill, revealed that Malkin's arguments were entirely unsubstantiated and willfully falsified. As historian Greg Robinson observed, "there were no reports of sabotage or espionage" following Pearl Harbor or before Japanese-Americans were unlawfully imprisoned. Allied forces maintained a Germany-first strategy because they considered Japan to be a lesser threat, in part because it did not have absolute control of the Pacific Ocean. Moreover, internment camps were established in June 1942, after the Battle of Midway, in which Japan's defeat greatly diminished its threat to the US mainland.
Despite the great deal of criticism she received, Malkin refused to budge from her position that MAGIC cables established the military necessity of internment camps. She underscored how important MAGIC was to her argument by dedicating her book to David Lowman, whose "research" on MAGIC she borrowed extensively from. However, James C. McNaughton, Command Historian of the US Army, Pacific, declared that Lowman's work on MAGIC to be of no merit and dismissed Lowman's "polemics ... as symptomatic of the lingering bitterness stemming from Pearl Harbor and the emotions raised by apologies and compensation."
Even the Historians' Committee for Fairness proved that Malkin's book represented "a blatant violation of professional standards of objectivity" -- "decades of scholarly research, including works by the official historian of the US Army" have contradicted every one of her intellectually dishonest claims. Following a report by the US government Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians, President Reagan authorized that compensation be paid because the denial of civil rights to Japanese-Americans had been "motivated by racism" instead of veritable military concerns. As the noted biographer Jean Edward Smith pointed out, during their internment, Japanese-Americans lost more than $400 million from 1942 to 1945, a sum when adjusted for inflation equated to almost $5 billion. These financial losses were never fully or adequately recouped.
Lastly, it should be noted that the segregated Japanese-American 100th Battalion/442nd Regimental Combat Team became the most highly decorated unit for its size and length of service in the history of the US Army. When the European Theatre finally ended, the 100th/442nd had received 7 Presidential Unit Citations, and its members were awarded numerous decorations for valor and competence, including 21 Medals of Honor, 52 Distinguished Service Crosses, 560 Silver Stars, 4,000 Bronze Stars, and 9,486 Purple Hearts. Their sacrifice was astounding because they suffered a casualty rate of 314 percent, which meant, on average, every man was injured more than three times.
About time!.......2007-08-29
Take an unpopular (conservative) stance on this issue and you are sure to be villified! In the context of the times, our government's response to the unprovoked sneak attack of Pearl Harbor and the invasion of the Phillipines was absolutely correct. The Japanese government refuses to this day to acknowledge many of the unspeakable atrocities that were committed by its soldiers during the war. The tentacles of its spy rings reached far and deep into this country. Good job Michelle!
To Protect a Nation.......2007-08-06
Meticulously researched, well-organized, logically presented. In order to protect a nation the measures taken must be sufficient to address the threat. Mistakes will be made. Nothing is perfect. If the mistakes occur on the side of protecting too much, the nation stands a chance of survival. If the mistakes are made on the side of not protecting enough the nation will perish. There is no such thing as "just the right amount." (When you have bacterial pneumonia and the doctor prescribes an antibiotic, do you want him to prescribe the minimum strength or the maximum? Do you stop taking the antibiotic as soon as your symptoms are gone, or do you finish the medication even after you are asymptomatic? Try stopping the medicine too soon and see what happens.) If it makes a nation safer to round up a large group of people who fit the enemy profile when the enemy threat is imminent then profiling is good, racial or otherwise. If you can't accept this then let's just ignore the borders, give everyone the benefit of doubt and we'll see who you blame the next time people who share appearance, enthicity and religion fly a jetliner into a city.
You Cant Handle The Truth.......2007-07-17
Michelle Malkin gives the facts and nothing but the facts. You will be surprised at what has been kept out of our history books and why.As michelle said in the book,to forget the past is dangerous but to fabricate the past is a much bigger sin.

Customer Reviews:
An Absolute Gem.......2007-06-30
Understanding Einstein almost sounds like an oxymoron. Is it really possible to understand one of the most brilliant people of the 20th century? Well, this book goes a long way in trying to provide the reader with an understanding of Einstein and his contributions to science and other areas of human endeavor. The author places Einstein in the context of our unfolding history of ideas as seen from the perspectives of science, psychology and philosophy, just to name a few. Since the "Idiot Guide" series are meant to be introductions to topics and not graduate level thesis', I was amazed at how much material was actually covered in a book of this kind. Being a big fan of Einstein's and having read most books out there about him, this book goes a long way in bringing together a wide diversity of material available on his theories and life. His most important discoveries ae cleary explained and even his shortcomings are touched upon. Like the author's other book on the "Theories of the Universe", he brings an interdisciplinary approach to the material, that always gives you more than just either his theories or biographical material. You will definitely be much closer to "understanding" Einstein after you read this book.
Worthless!.......2007-05-02
"Understanding Einstein" attempts to cover major scientific developments from Aristotle to post-Einstein, as well as details of Einstein's life - all in 432 pages! Clearly anyone but a COMPLETE IDIOT would know this is not possible in any meaningful way - especially one attempting to understand relativity.
Material is mostly presented as givens, with little/no insight as to the "Why?" Further, even the examples used are not necessarily correct.
Example 1: Einstein's conclusion that acceleration and gravity are equivalent is first postulated, and the example utilized (a moving spaceship in which light from outside hits the spaceship's interior at a lower level - ergo it is bent by gravity - is a non sequitur because the spaceship need not be accelerating for this to occur.
Example 2: Moring mentions a glitch in Mercury's orbit that is not explained by Newtonian mechanics, but is by Einstein's gravitational mathematics. That's all - no details, no insight, no understanding, and no value.
Example 3: Moring ends up referencing post-Einstein theories that assert variations in the speed of light, contrary to Einstein. That's all we get - no explanation or resolution. Further, the book doesn't even reference recent experiments that have brought light to a complete stop, or attempt how this meshes with Einstein.
Bottom Line: Read something else if you want to understand much of anything in the physical sciences.
Very informative.......2007-01-04
I haven't finished the whole book, but it is already my favorite. It is a trip through history. The author builds science theory, and discovery through the ages, social climates, and general thinking in the given era. It's a great quick reference for scientist, and dates of discoveries. I highly recommend this book for anyone interest in digging deeper in to science. It is fascinating.
Mixed Impression.......2006-10-26
Positive: A fairly easy read, well written.
Good biographical material dealing with Einstein's work, social, and political views.
Non-mathematical accounts of general & special theory of relativity, and quantum theory.
Negative: discursive, somewhat superficial accounts of the history of physics.
The thread of the author's arguments are frequently lost through his excursions into philosophy, religion, and the psychology of the unconscious. Some of this is pretty superficial and the comnnecttions made between these fields and contemporary physics is, in my opinion, a real stretch.
The discussion of time and relativity is at times confusing because the distinction between the observer and the event is not made clear.
Very good read........2004-04-02
If you're looking for an introductory level overview of physics, from the earliest thinkers to modern theories that seem stranger than fiction, look no further. Although I read it cover to cover, I still read chapters and segments from time to time. The author writes in a manner that is easy to follow and very interesting. Highly recommended.

Great resource for improving your lands wildlife.......2002-05-11
I was given this book by my dad who met the author a few weeks ago. We recently purchased 120 acres in the beautiful state of wisconsin. We wanted to select cut our woods and put in a large fish pond. This book gives all the information you need and tells you how to improve your land in easy to understand language. If you are an outdoors person and would like to improve your land to attract wildlife of any kind, this book will get you started and will show results.
