Book Description
This exceptionally thorough treatment of the Hungarian economy and its experience of economic reform over the past twenty years investigates the decentralizing measures and market mechanisms that have been progressively introduced. Within a wider discussion of the appliance and success of Soviet type economics (STES), the author considers the limitations on and limitations of the present Hungarian economic model. This timely English version of Xavier Richet's French original provides much insight into what has gone wrong in Hungary and suggests ways future pitfalls might be avoided.

A complete workshop guide for amateurs, woodworkers, and students of mandolins and mandolas, featuring 175 color photos and drawings.
Customer Reviews:
Very detailed step by step guide.......2005-09-12
I'm about half way done with building a mandolin using this book. I found the instructions to be clear and very complete and so far have not run into any problems that the book did not forewarn. I would highly recommend it.
No prior knowledge of woodworking is assumed.......2002-12-05
The mandolin is not a widely utilized instrument compared with its relatives the guitar and violin, and even less has been written on its construction. Enter Troughton's guide, which covers the making of the mandolin in all its details. While no prior knowledge of woodworking is assumed, readers should be interested in both the instrument itself and woodworking in general in order to gain the most from this survey.

Theories of the Information Society: Third Edition (International Library of Sociology)
ASIN: 0745626858 |
Book Description
In this timely new book, Christopher May surveys some of the most influential and important writings that declare we are entering a new information age. It is frequently asserted that this will bring about a social transformation and that the character of work is being transformed by the widespread deployment of information and communication technologies. In a similar manner we are told the world of politics is changing, with new communities emerging which will alter the practices of politics in profound and novel ways, and which will significantly reduce the role of the state and government. Each of these claims is subjected to a detailed critique. Christopher May suggests that while there have clearly been some major and important changes prompted by the information technology revolution, these are often changes only in the forms of activity and not their substance. The information age represents some marked and important continuities with previous social practices, rather than the overthrow of all that has gone before. This sceptical view balances and moderates the often hysterical celebration of the new information society ndash; a celebration which, the author argues, often lapses into an apologia for modern capitalism. The Information Society will be of particular interest to students in sociology, politics, political economy, media and cultural studies and information studies.
Customer Reviews:
counteracts a lot of hype.......2005-09-22
May supplies a logical and sceptical analysis of advances in information technology (IT), where these often have been accompanied by breathless claims of generating big societal changes. He correctly distinguishes between new technology that causes existing social interactions to be more efficient or faster, and those that make truly new social mores. For the latter, he suggests that biotechnology may ultimately fall in this category. Its potential for life saving or life extending advances may cause far reaching social upheaval.
His views are a good counterpoint to much hype about technology. Naturally, he cannot resist remarking on the Y2K imbroglio. How this was largely puffed up in an echo of the dot com and telco zeitgeist. A fairy tale of its times.
The book is useful in giving you a more nuanced perspective on technological change. It even dares suggest that earlier times experienced more fundamental changes!

Book Description
As radio developed in the early 1920s, the focus for most people was the AM band and stations such as KDKA, the first broadcast station. There was, however, another broadcast method that was popular among many early enthusiasts-shortwave radio. As is true today, the transmission of news and entertainment programs over shortwave frequencies permitted reception over great distances. For many in America and beyond, shortwave was an exciting aspect of the new medium. Some still tune the shortwave bands to enjoy the programming. Others pursue broadcasts for the thrill of the hunt. This book fully covers shortwave broadcasting from its beginning through World War II. A technical history examining the medium's development and use tells the story of a listener community that spanned the globe. Included are overviews of the primary shortwave stations operating worldwide in the 1930s, along with clubs and competitions, publications and prizes. A rich collection of illustrations includes many QSLs, the cards that stations sent to acknowledge receipt of their transmissions and that are much prized by long-distance collectors.
Customer Reviews:
The only book on the subject.......2000-07-08
Jerry's written the definitive history of the shortwave meduim up to WWII. It's all downhill from 45 to the dawn of the net. And that is a book. Until then read war of the black heavens.
This book fills a need..........2000-03-16
For several years I've been wondering that the author has been doing gathering old QSL cards and other radio trivia.
Berg's book is a wonderful payback to all those who've contributed. He has written an excellent, if not exhausive, history of international broadcasting through the end of the second world war, with an emphasis on American stations. (The are several volumes about Nazi propaganda broadcasts you could also consider).
If you only read one book on the hitory of radio, it should be Empire of the Air. But if you read two, or have a special interest in shortwave (as I do) this is a good choice. I hope there will be a volume covering 1945 onwards -- perhaps just about shortave in the cold war.

very good stradegy guide for noobs and everybody.......2007-05-02
I would recommend this stradegy guide to everybody because it has a full description on quest from level 1-50,Items drop from monsters and vice-versa (what monsters drop or what items u can get from monsters)and the %percent ratio of the drop item from monsters. A full spec of skills from 1st profession to the 3rd profession. Maps from starter village to end game maps. You get crafting recipes from no grade items to S grade items. a complete guide of warping directions to towns(very helpful because some town u can only warp to one direction and have to go another town to just warp back).I like the fact that i could see how much an weapon cost from any town and what type of weapon it is and type. The npc guide is superb and it shows every npc on map and stores and warp npcs. The leveling guide is good to. It shows u where to camp out at your level solo or grouping.I can go on and on telling you about this guide but its too detailed for me to speak it all. overall i got my money's worth and you won't get dissapointed of your purchase. I give it a 5 star +++++ .
Lineage II Strategy Guide.......2005-08-03
I found it very informative. There is definitly more in this guide the Prima Beginner's guide given with the game. I would recommend it.
What a dissapointment..........2004-09-26
This is my first review on Amazon. That aside, let me get this clear:
I normally am very impressed with Prima's Strategy guides.
That out of the way, this book is horrible. A joke. A mockery. Entire paragraphs are paraphrased OR copied word for word from one class to another! They don't EVEN change a word to make it more personalized. This is not some general comment. I can back it up with specific references if need be.
Also, it contradicts itself very very often. For example, it may say that a class exceeds in several areas, specifically its speed, attack speed, and magic resist. However, in the next paragraph, it will mention, "however keep in mind that do to your slow run speed you should avoid..." Uhh..durr....
Sentences often trail to an end mid-statment. The dwarves class tips are a joke, there are not even any tips on the Elf Wizard, and at LEAST 3 other classes that I cannot recall the names of at the moment but I know they are missing. All 3 archer classes (Hawkeye, Silver Ranger, and the DE Equivalent) are almost exact copies of one another, with maybe 1 paragraph different.
This book is ONLY good for referencing the lists of skills (which it is superb at) and maps for a few dungeons, but not all! This guide would disgust any mediocre L2 fan, and anyone new to the game will be dissapointed at no maps for any starter town. A lot of mispellings as well. A LOT.
A side note: I understand that most strategy guides for on-line play cannot be expected to be accurate when describing actual strategy for in-game actions. However, this guide does not even hit the target close. The author(s) seem to love referring to different classes with one phrase to sum them up. I.E. Hawk Eye being the best siege archer, the Silver Ranger being the best kiting archer... pretty true in this example, though the difference is miniscule, however the descriptions of many other classes leave much to be desired.
You can definetly tell what classes the author(s) played. Read through the Orc class descriptions and tips. It is full to the brim. Then read the Elf Mystic, Elf Fighter, Dwarf, or pretty much even Dark Elf or Human pages. It is empty and copied and pasted from each other. The Dwarf description is laughable! One paragraph to describe a 40-70 class?!?!
One thing is clear, this book was RUSHED and quality was thrown out the window because of it. Prima editors must have been on vacation for the week.
To sum up, this guide is good for referencing skill lists for the classes. Anything else, and this book is a waste of hard earned adena, err, money.
Thanks
Alan
not great.......2004-06-14
This book has some general tips and information. there is no in depth information concerning quests, maps, or anything that is really useful in playing the game. I wouldnt waste my money on it if i had to do over again.
Just something to consider........2004-05-19
I purchased this guide recently, and don't feel I got my money's worth. It is a valuable tool, yet most of the information contained within is already listed on websites like wwww.l2orphus.com. There are multiple typing errors - some paragraphs aren't even complete, and it appears whole sections are missing, - like in the Dark elf section they don't even discuss the Shillen Knights in depth like they do the rest of the other class choices. To correct; it isn't discussed at all. Though overall I guess these details could be labeled minor - I still don't think this is worth the money so look around before you buy it I am sure you will be able to find the same information online, for free.
Book Description
In what is sure to become a classic, Boys of '67 follows the careers of a group of young second lieutenants from their baptism of fire in Vietnam, through the Cold War, and to the current insurgency in Iraq. In Vietnam, they experienced the Tet Offensive, the siege at Khe Sanh, and the 1972 Easter Offensive. They went on to serve eyeball-to-eyeball with North Koreans in the DMZ, and later they participated in the 1983 invasion of Grenada, operations in Beirut, and Desert Storm. Some would never make it out of Vietnam alive. Some would be crippled by wounds. All would fight like tigers, and one would rise to the very top, commanding the Marine Corps they all loved.
Customer Reviews:
A Inspiring Portrait Of Three USMC Generals.......2006-06-06
"Boys Of `67" is a brilliant and coherent chronicle that follows the lives of three Marines who trained together in 1967 and who went on to almost mythical heights with their careers. This book is inspiring and entertaining; but above all, this is a fascinating tale of how three young Marines go through their careers and become generals.
The book takes us from their officer training to Vietnam and beyond. These men are true heroes in the very sense of that word. You cannot help but admire them as they are portrayed in the pages of Charles Jones' book. He takes this journey of their three individual lives and masterly weaves them altogether so that we can more fully understand the significance of what these men were able to do.
This book honors the finest traditions of the Marine Corps and the men and women who proudly serve. It is full of history, facts, insights, and personal observations. It is also a little controversial with its stand on how the war in Iraq was handled. It comes off as an honest and well balanced look at modern warfare and policy; however, the book is really about the men who fought those wars and who dealt with the results of those policy decisions.
I fully recommend this book to read! It receives the MWSA's Top Rating of Five Stars!
This book also receives my personal endorsement!
An Excellent Read!.......2006-05-01
Duty, Honor, Country". If anyone is looking for a definition, read The Boys of 67. The book is a extraordinary account of Marine Corps history in the last 40 years as reflected in the careers of 3 accomplished officers. Jones' puts the reader onsite to experience first hand the events and circumstances that ultimately shape leaders of the Corps. Jones' writing style is fluent and very readable, does not get bogged down in too much technical terminology but uses just enough jarhead jargon and detail to keep the reader engaged in the military milieu. The reader will get a real sense of being part of the scene in the battle sites of Vietnam, Grenada and Beirut, and a real appreciation for what it really means to be one of a "few good men". Being a son, grandson, brother and brother-in-law to Marine Officers, this book puts into perspective the family of which I am a part. Anyone associated with the Corps, vets, active duty, wives and dependents, will enjoy this book and feel the same sense of pride and appreciation for such a fine group of men diligently standing watch for our sakes.
Living History.......2006-04-27
The "Boys of '67" is simply terrific. As an army enlisted soldier and Vietnam vet, reading the early chapters of this book brought back many memories. What's most interesting about "Boys of '67" is it follows three future marine generals careers from basic officer school at Quantico through their Vietnam deployment and through post-Vietnam, Grenada, Lebanon, the first Gulf War, Somalia, the peace-keeping deployments of the 1990s, and Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. It's like reading the recent history of the Marine Corps in one book.
The "Boys of '67" is a fabulous read and lays out for future officers what it takes to succeed in a military career.
"The Boys of 67" is a Great Read in '06.......2006-04-25
The new book by Charles (Chip) Jones titled "The Boys of '67" is an extremely well written, thoughtful account of three Marine officers as they make their way in the United States Marine Corps and life. This book can be read and appreciated in a number of ways: as a recent history of the Marine Corps; as a review of some of the major foreign policy efforts of the U.S. over the past 40 years or as the compelling, engaging and thoroughly human story of three fascinating men and those around them. I think the book works on all three levels.
The first chapter delves right into the recent run up to the war in Iraq and offers some new insight into that planning. My first impression was that this chapter was a jarring introduction to the story that Jones lays out. After reading further and understanding how the Marines are called on to jump into battle on a moments notice, this first chapter begun to make sense as it illustrated how unexpectedly the Marine Corps can be asked to move into one of their many roles.
After the first exciting chapter, the story Jones tells settles down to a chronological account of how Jim Jones, Ray Smith and Marty Steele forge and lead their way into Marine Corps history. I found the the book to be a "page turner". Charles Jones writing style and his skill as a researcher/historian shows the hallmarks of a writer who has honed his craft making "The Boys of '67" pleasurable reading from start to finish.
The Marine Corps in way you've never seen before.......2006-03-27
I've read a fair amount about Marines, everything from your straight up shooter memoirs to scholarly stuff in the Marine Corps Gazette, Marine Times, Naval Proceedings and so on. Boys of '67, however, is unlike the others. It focuses on three 2nd Lt.'s fresh out of Basic in April 1967 and follows them for the next four decades as they and the corps change and grow. It mixes combat and peace and politics like a novel. Sort of spoiler -
The 2nd Lt.'s all become generals. In fact, one, 4 star general James Jones, is the current commander of NATO. How he got there from a hilltop in Vietnam surrounded by the NVA is nothing short of amazing.
This book reads like an epic, and it is. ONe of the other 2nd Lt's son ends up a Cobra pilot and from there now flies Marine One for the President! This is a book about Marines, their Corps and their country. More than that though, it's about their devotion to duty and to each other. If you want an uplifting read about men of honor and how they fought and bled for this country I highly recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:
Still one of the definitive works on the Crusades.......2006-10-06
Mr. Payne's study on the Crusades comes out strong in the pathos of this book. The characters of both sides are displayed with all their flaws and all their good intentions. So much of today's world is still living with the effects of those many years ago. They were not so different from ourselves and Mr. Payne has done us a great service in bringing the characters to life again so that we can visit with and learn from them.
A good model for history writing........2006-06-05
The subject of this book, the crusades, is enthralling and captivating already. However, Robert Payne makes reading about the crusades an adventure itself with his gritty, vivid writing style, which has brought history to life in a way I have not scene in any other historian's writing.
History is an age old social science. In modern times, it has developed into a precise calculus, and any good historian, desiring credibility, follows a formula which I must admit often strikes layman readers like myself as rather dry: every claim must be justified and backed up, in every sentence obscure historians of the past are envoked as a way of saying, "See, other historians have said so, I am repeating the words of those who came before, my claims are valid." Modern, scholastic, historical writing is plagued by a (necessary) insecurity, ever word uttered seeks precedent in the historical analysis of the past.
Payne breaks this mold. Somehow, he does this successfully without coming across as incredible, as dipping perilously into "historical fiction" where author elaboration blurs historical veracity. His history reads like an exciting novel, yet his credibility remains stalwart due to his constant reliance on primary sources. Often, Payne's narrative voice describes with artistic detail the look of such-and-such a prince, or the feelings of so-and-so King or Sultan as he attempted some epic conquest or folly; however, this bold claims are often drawn straight from primary sources in the forms of letters and narratives written at the time. Payne weaves these letters into the narrative himself as a way of reminding his readers the historical authenticity of his descriptive powers. Despite his exciting writing style and his artistic abilities as a writer, he always falls back to primary sources at the times when his personal voice could intrude: this tactic is illustrated most poignantly when Payne lets the players involved in the fall of Jerusalem speak for themselves, creating a chapter consistingly solely of letters written by Saladin, Frederick Barbarossa, and the Master of the Temple.
For an authentic read on the crusades that will not bore, Payne's work is a prime choice.
Great book to begin this subject.......2005-05-11
This is a Great book for someone interested in the crusades. Writing style is easy to follow and the information is formatted in a friendly manner. This book hits all the relevant points without bogging you down with details that you may find tedious. Those details do wet your appetite for further reading on the subject. It is a MUST have.
A Masterpiece of American Literature.......2005-04-02
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Robert Payne produced a body of works (dates of publication: circa 1945 - circa 1982) that to this day remain nearly unparalleled in the realm of historical writers. Known for his diverse selection of topics, spanning nearly 3000 years of world history, Payne conquers a topic of interest with exquisite grace and eloquence, while still maintaining a matter of fact, written tone that average reader can relate to and understand.
ABOUT THE CONTROVERSY:
Throughout the course of Robert Payne's career, he was often criticized by those readers who confused his novel's, containing fabulously imaginative and superb prose, with his purely nonfiction-ally based documentaries. When those two categories become blurred, it can at times, nearly mar an author's reputation beyond repair. For example, if a reader of Payne's books would consecutively explore "the shepherd", "the lord Jesus", "the holy fire", and "the dream and the tomb", the reader would find them self immersed in a wealth of information relating to the existence of Christ and the formative years of Christianity. However, there would be two out of the four text's which were intended to be novel's, rather then works of nonfiction, despite the fact that each of the four books contain a tremendous amount of factually based material. It is when a reader who has become accustomed to Payne's nonfiction-ally based works, in-turn, and unawaringly begin to read the authors "in-part, fictionally based works" that problems start to arise, as quite obviously, the reader will begin to doubt the credibility of the author when reading his fictionally based material, and holding it against the nonfiction-ally based.
ABOUT "THE DREAM AND THE TOMB":
"The Dream and the Tomb" is initiated with the preliminary facts of the first Crusade, while detailing the necessary early historical figures, Peter the Hermit, and the like. The book reads from one chapter to the next with the greatest of ease, while still presenting a compilation of information that is both comprehensive and necessary to the understanding of the quest for the Holy Sepulchre.
Latter in the book the well knitted, short biographies of great historic figures of the like of Saladin, Frederick II, the lineage of Baldwin, Robert the lion-heart, and a host of others are explored, leading the reader to also gain an essential and interesting history of the early and formative years of Europe, at times that were contemporary to the Holy Conquests.
By the end of the text, Payne, has very admirably reached the TRUE conclusion of the history of the Crusades by detailing the existence and ultimate fate of the LAST of the remaining supporters of the Christian cause on the island of Ruad, rather then simply ending with the last significant battle, and ultimate defeat of the city Acre, lead by Khalil the sultan of Egypt.
IN CONCLUSION:
This reviewer presents "The Dream of the Tomb", as a must read for anyone who is looking to gain preliminary insight into the history of the Crusades. It should go without saying that there are many other publications which present a much more detailed and in-depth look at this ominous period of Christian history, although, author Robert Payne very successfully laces all of the necessary threads (and a few extra) of this topic together in a fabulously superb creation, which in fact may quite possibly be one of the masterpieces of the authors career.

Biased.......2003-09-23
Though this is comprehensive in some fashion, it many times strays into an account overly concentrated on one side of the Crusades.
Frankly, Payne does a good job of getting the story on the Christian side of things, but does not fair so well on getting on the Muslim side of things. Whereas his explanation of the depths of the Christian's beliefs, their strife, and many times their hypocrisy is excellent, he shuffles the Muslims under the table. The reader never really gets inside the head of the most prominent figures of the Muslim armies, and oftentimes they are portrayed as savages and their more peaceful gestures--such as letting the Jews and Christians live peacefully beside them in many of the cities they conquered--ignored.
For a full account of the Crusades, both sides should be represented equally, which is not done satisfactorily here. Still, the prose is good.

Experienced Secondary Science Teacher Praises this Book.......2000-09-07
I am beginning my second semester using this book as my primary text for my secondary science methods class. My class has to provide students with a framework for teaching all the science content that they have mastered in their 3 years of college. This book provides an excellent source for students to think about what it means to be a science teacher, to understand major curriculum projects in earlier grades that will impact secondary science, and to address important issues of gender equity, inclusion, and national and state standards for teaching. There is too much material for me to cover fully in a 2 semester hour class, but, I try to talk about and discuss in class most of the content. The activities at the end of each chapter are excellent for giving students practical ways of applying information in the chapter. I have not found another book to equal this book's caliber and practical usefulness.

In addition, it requires the observer to make conjectures regarding the teachers' underlying cognitions (e.g., knowledge, beliefs, goals) that might account for the instructional practice they observe.
*offers
reflective activities that provide a structure through which beginning teachers can think about their teaching in an insightful, thorough, and productive manner. Students can work through the activities over the period of a year. The structured observations and reflective activities are modular, and the framework applies to all observations of teaching, no matter what the instructional content.
*includes
guidelines and instruments for supervisors to use when observing, conferencing with, and assessing beginning or student teachers. The unique aspect of these guidelines and instruments is the link they make between teachers' cognitions and their instructional practice.
All instruments and suggested activities are couched within a highly effective framework for teacher reflection and self-assessment that was developed in the spirit of the NCTM professional teaching standards. This framework is grounded in a cognitive perspective on learner-centered teaching. In Part I, the framework is explained and its validity is documented. Part II shows how teachers can use the framework to observe other teachers' classroom work, and to reflect on their own teaching. Part III offers case studies to help readers see how the method works.
