Book Description

In this updated, second edition of the highly acclaimed international best seller, The Dollar Crisis: Causes, Consequences, Cures, Richard Duncan describes the flaws in the international monetary system that have destabilized the global economy and that may soon culminate in a deflation-induced worldwide economic slump.

The Dollar Crisis is divided into five parts:

Part One describes how the US trade deficits, which now exceed US$1 million a minute, have destabilized the global economy by creating a worldwide credit bubble.

Part Two explains why these giant deficits cannot persist and why a US recession and a collapse in the value of the Dollar are unavoidable.

Part Three analyzes the extraordinarily harmful impact that the US recession and the collapse of the Dollar will have on the rest of the world.

Part Four offers original recommendations that, if implemented, would help mitigate the damage of the coming worldwide downturn and put in place the foundations for balanced and sustainable economic growth in the decades ahead.

Part Five, which has been newly added to the second edition, describes the extraordinary evolution of this crisis since the first edition was completed in September 2002. It also considers how the Dollar Crisis is likely to unfold over the years immediately ahead, the likely policy response to the crisis, and why that response cannot succeed.

The Dollar Standard is inherently flawed and increasingly unstable. Its collapse will be the most important economic event of the 21st Century.

5 out of 5 stars Solid.......2007-07-30

"Politics is the ability to foretell what is going to happen tomorrow, next week, next month and next year. And to have the ability afterwards to explain why it didn't happen. " (C) Winston Churchill

According to this definition, Mr. Duncan is a good politician and he probably should run for office.

This is a second edition of the book. First edition was written sometime around 2001-2002 and was predicting imminent collapse of the dollar and post-dot-com-bust recession turning into major depression.

As we all know, that didn't happen. Instead of going into the ground, U.S. economy started a gradual trek upwards, partly due to real estate boom brought about by low interest rates, partly due to ingenious fiscal and monetary policy of Washington DC and support from national banks of China and Japan.

By 2005, Mr. Duncan felt compelled to write a new edition of his book, this time adding passages about real estate bubble and a whole new section describing developments since 2002 - in essence, explaining why predictions of 1st edition haven't come true yet.

Jokes aside, this is a solid book and it's highly recommended to any serious reader. A warning, though - it's not a popular book, and it's not meant for light reading - it leans towards scientific style, so it may seem dry and hard to read, especially to someone without basic knowledge of macroeconomics.

1 out of 5 stars Mr Duncan Knows Nothing.......2007-04-21

What the cheeky Mr Duncan fails to grasp is that the Chinese and Japanese love collecting dollars, much like Americans love collecting baseball cards. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to subsidize the rest of the world via minimum wage and universal fiat. As long as Mr Paulson makes frequent trips to China to make sure they're working hard and behaving themselves in the factories there's nothing to worry about.

Furthermore, his "analysis" rests flimsily on the work of the so called economists Ludwig von Mises and clever clogs Jacques Rueff. No wonder he is so confused.

Verdict:

Communist propaganda

3 out of 5 stars Tedious and Too many Graphs.......2007-03-22

This book is very tedious and wont give you the answers that you are looking for if you are wondering about the current economic situation in the world today. Great for book worms and economics fans, but not for the average person. Too many charts and graphs; almost every other page has a chart. I recommend "Petrodollar Warfare" as a great book to start with if you want to understand how the US got into the economic mess it is in.

5 out of 5 stars very basic undersatanding of the history of our dollar demise.......2007-03-16

a must read for anyone that is woried about where we are headed as a nation

4 out of 5 stars Message 5 stars - If you use Dollars Read this book.......2007-02-03

Overall I think the message of the coming disaster for the US and possibly world economy is critical to read and understand. This book woke me up to realize it is time to pay attention and be prepared for the value of our "dollars" to drop fast.

MUCH too MUCH numbers and "jargon" that I happen to be unfamiliar with but I was able to get the overall message.

      Book Description

This book examines the consequences of misspecifications ranging from the fundamental to the nonexistent for the interpretation of likelihood-based methods of statistical estimation and interference. Professor White first explores the underlying motivation for maximum-likelihood estimation, treats the interpretation of the maximum-likelihood estimator (MLE) for misspecified probability models and gives the conditions under which parameters of interest can be consistently estimated despite misspecification and the consequences of misspecification for hypothesis testing in estimating the asymptotic covariance matrix of the parameters. The analysis concludes with an examination of methods by which the possibility of misspecification can be empirically investigated and offers a variety of tests for misspecification.

        Book Description

This benchmark volume addresses the debate over the effects of early industrialization on standards of living during the decades before the Civil War. Its contributors demonstrate that the aggregate antebellum economy was growing faster than any other large economy had grown before.

Despite the dramatic economic growth and rise in income levels, questions remain as to the general quality of life during this era. Was the improvement in income widely shared? How did economic growth affect the nature of work? Did higher levels of income lead to improved health and longevity? The authors address these questions by analyzing new estimates of labor force participation, real wages, and productivity, as well as of the distribution of income, height, and nutrition.

            Book Description

Holy Mother! She gets around, that gal, and now her myriad miraculous appearances are captured on film and in living black-and-white (as opposed to in marble, glow-in-the-dark dashboard plastic, or tasteful acrylic paint on black velvet).

Look! There she goes again: dancing on stage at a Madonna concert in Vegas. Wait! Isn’t that her riding hogs with the Angels (Hell’s Angels, that is)? And sure, sure, we all know she’s been seen in many a tortilla, but have you ever encountered Our Lady of Masa Harina? Who’s that white water rafting? Giving Air Jordan a high-five? Yep, that’s our Mary, not exactly the unathletic, retiring type she’s made out to be in Renaissance art.

But you have to look closely at these photos, courtesy of the Institute of Seriously Weird Virgin Mary Sightings (ISWVMS), for Mary’s appearances are, like those of Elvis, unannounced, inexplicable and, well, seriously weird.

Wait, don’t bite into that cinnamon Danish…look closer! It’s not just a swirl of filling, it’s…it’s…her!

                  Book Description

Southeast Asia stands at the crossroads of world civilizations and their contemporary transformations triggered by the globalization process. Both the source of migrations and the recipient of cultures from Asia, the Middle East, and beyond, the region has fashioned out of the interplay its diasporic communities, its indigenous peoples and the historical forces of colonialism, postcolonialism, nationalism, and transnationalism, new forms of identity, collective and individual, secular and religious. This book shows how, through the application of the methods of cultural studies, fresh readings of Southeast Asian societies can be undertaken, readings that not only reveal fresh facets of the complexity and fascination of the region, but also place it back at the centre of current theoretical debates in the social sciences and Asian studies.

This book is practically useless. In order to work on the tutorials, it is necessary to download the images for the lessons from the publisher's website (as stated in the book).
However, most of the images are not there !!!! I made contact with the publisher several times hoping they would correct the problem, but was unsuccessful.
There are lots of other books for learning Photoshop Elements 2---keep looking !!!

4 out of 5 stars I liked this book so much i bought it........2004-02-22

I am a complete novice when it comes to Photoshop. I initally ruled out this book because of the 3 star rating. How wrong i was! I first bought "Create! The No-Nonsense Guide to PE 2." It was a little too brief and left too many questions unanswered. I then turned to my local library, who had this SAMS title available. I checked it out twice before i decided it was a book i would want to reference on a regular basis and bought it. For my money, it's perfect. Carla Rose is an interesting and entertaining writer without being overly chatty or bogging down in too many personal asides. I started on Chapter One, Page One, and worked my way thru. The instructions are clear and didn't overload a newbie with too much information. The only reason i did not give it 5 stars is because of the SAMS website. I was only able to find/download one tutorial. According to the book, there should have been more, and while that was a disappointment, it really had no effect on the ultimate result - namely, i'm now pretty darn proficient in Photoshop Elements, if i do so say so myself. If you don't know what you're doing, get the book. I think you'll enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars Russ Walkowich MyMac.com Book Review.......2003-02-12

Carla Rose has been involved with photography since she was a young girl and has continued with her interest, expanding into the Macintosh area, and writing more than 24 computer books. Jennifer Fulton has written over 100 computer books for both the education and retail market. Together they have worked to produce a book that will get you up and going with Photoshop Elements 2 in a relatively short time.

Now the idea is not that you sit down and start to read the book, one chapter an hour straight for twenty-four hours. The idea is to provide the reader with enough information that they can then take an hour or two to work with what they've learned from reading the chapter, building their knowledge and confidence levels as they continue on.

Chapter One starts with the basic introduction to PSE 2 for the reader, explaining the Help resources including Tool Tips, Hints Palette, How-To's and the Help Button. Chapter Two guides the reader through the Elements Desktop, through Tools, Shortcuts, Options, Menus and preferences. Each chapter that follows continues to provide the reader with logical basic information for them to follow as they work their way through the program. Starting and Saving, Importing Source Images, Making Selections and Using Layers, Adding Type, Printing Picture and Posting to the Web cover the remaining 8 hours. The reader then works into Simple Corrections (Levels, Contrast, Color, Straightening, Skewing, Cropping/Resizing, Repair Recipes and Tutorials); Photo Rescue (Black-and-White pictures, Color Repairs, Removing/Replacing Objects, Improvement Filters) and the remaining 7 hours cover Creativity (Artistic Filters, Art from Scratch, Composite Images, Going Wild, Creating Background/Textures from Scratch, to name a few)

Each chapter/hour includes a summary, Q & A, a Workshop (Questions and the Answers) and Activities for the reader to put what they've learned to the test. Ms. Rose has even set up that examples of images used in the book can be downloaded from Sams Publishing's main site to work with as part of the Activities section in two of the chapters. While the book is in black and white, the authors have included a full Color Gallery that shows the images in the book as they would appear, including the page number and "hourÓ that the reader would be in. The book is logical, well thought out and is not overwhelming even for the brand new user or beneath a user that is familiar with Photoshop Elements.

I just bought this book and really like its approach. When I was looking in the store I checked all of the books for correcting redeye, which I have done quite a bit in Elements. Most of the other books basically tell you how to follow the directions that Elements gives you. This book said something like "OK, that is what Elements tells you, but as you can see it didn't work very well. Here is the way to fix redeye manually." This is the kind of information that I would buy a book for!

I bought the book hoping I could utilize the source images for the book's exercises. These exercises are suppose to be posted on Sams Publishing Web site. However, there are no download links for this book. I have attempted to contacted Sams and the only response I received was to click on the books imprint page and it will bring you to the download links. If they had tried this themself they would realize that this does not work.

Already hailed as the standard work, The Most Dangerous Enemy is a supremely authoritative history of the British battle that galvanized the public imagination and symbolized the destiny of a nation. But in this rigorous re-investigation of the Battle of Britain, Stephen Bungay tells a story full of revelations. Whether assessing the development of radar or the relative merits of the Spitfire, Hurricane, and Messerschmitt, he uncovers the unexpected truth behind many time-honored myths. Not only a major work of modern history but also a truly compelling narrative, The Most Dangerous Enemy confirms the Battle of Britain as a crucial event in European history.

A very well writtten book about not only the Battle itself but also its implications at the time and its pivotal role in shaping the world as we now know it. Few people fought this battle, compared to others of similar importance, but the outcome was to define the world for the rest of the century.
In analyzing both adversaries, their strategies, weaknesses and virtues it comes to set aside some time honored myths about the Battle that makes this book worth reading. The author took part on a BBC documentary Ace of Spitfire. Also worth viewing.

An amazing recount of the bravery & skill of these pilots. Very human. Well written, an excellent accompaniment to the TV series "Spitfire". (Which is worth watching just for seeing this author, who reminds me somewhat of Mr Bean...)

The most exhaustive accout of the Battle of Britain I have read to date and there are many excellent accounts. This book does the best job of recording the contribution of Keith Park and finally puts the "big wing" theory in perspective.

5 out of 5 stars Where To Begin.......2006-07-20

Having read numerous works on the Battle of Britain, I can now advise the reader where to begin: Stephen Bungay's The Most Dangerous Enemy. It will be regarded by WWII enthusiasts as the starting point in one's quest to discover the facts behing this pivotal event. This is the main course after which the accounts of Churchill and those who led Fighter Command and flew with it will be as dessert and coffee. Buy it now and enjoy!

                    Book Description

Written by highly acclaimed historian Gary B. Nash, this book presents an interpretive account of the interactions between Native Americans, African Americans, and Euroamericans during the colonial and revolutionary eras. It reveals the crucial interconnections between North America's many peoples—illustrating the ease of their interactions in the first two centuries of European and African presence—to develop a fuller, deeper understanding of the nation's underpinnings. Coverage explores the interaction of many peoples at all levels of society, from various cultural backgrounds and across the centuries; African-Americans as active participants in the cultural process, drawing upon the work of African and African-American historians; the origins of racism, tracing the development of racial attitudes and the mixing of people across racial boundaries; Indians as much more than victims, reaching beyond the Europeans that "discovered" North America to explore the society that had already been here for thousands of years; profiles of the various European colonizers, examining French, Dutch, and Spanish settlers and comparing their treatment of enslaved Africans and Native Americans with that of the English. For those interested in Colonial American History.

4 out of 5 stars Don't believe the poor reviews.......2005-03-25

First of all, I can see where some would find this book boring- that is if the reader has no interest in American History. But this begs the questions- why would such a person pick up this book to begin with? For class maybe, but I imagine every student of history has read a difficult book or two. This one simply doesn't qualify. As far as books I've had to read for school, this was pretty easy to get through.

This book is not a primary source. If you are looking for such a thing, look elsewhere. This is a well-researched account of life on the early American frontier, and the interaction between different cultures.

Someone makes the claim further down that this book makes the Europeans look really bad. I disagree. This book does a fine job of looking at this time period from multiple view points. There are moments when the Europeans will come off badly, but almost any group has it's moments throughout history where it's not going to be a shining example of how to live your life. Aside from which, as this book points out, the Europeans are not one single group and the different European groups looked at within this book (The English, Dutch, French, and Spanish) all had different relationships with the various indigenous peoples of what would become the eastern United States. This book also takes a look at slavery and the origins of that horrid institution in the Americas. It is often fascinating reading and certainly doesn't deserve the one star reviews it's received.

                    1 out of 5 stars So boring!.......2003-02-25

Like a few others on here I could not read this book. It did help me fall asleep though, lol. Anyone who's looking into reading this book, Id suggest checking it out of the library before you buy it.

                    1 out of 5 stars ..........2002-09-04

This is by far the worst book I have ever needed to read for school ever. When I attempted to read this book, I must've fallen asleep at least 10 times and I haven't even got past the first 2 chapters. I have no idea what my teacher was thinking when he saw this book. If it was a choice, I would choose negative 5 stars for this waste of paper and ink. It is, hands down, a boring book with absolutely not point at all except to critizice the immigration of the early Europeans. It almost seems like Nash couldn't give about the Europeans coming over here. Well, I would be quite upset if they didn't come over here, unless it would have prevented the publishing of his redundant, afwul book.

                    4 out of 5 stars Exploring Nash's argument.......2002-02-05

RWB by Nash attempts to present a more accurate picture of colonial society. However, in the end, I believe Nash fails to do any real justice to his examination of this society's underpinnings. Essentially, Nash abandons this pursuit very quickly into the book and deals mostly with the facts of the era. Additionally, Nash's views seem all to decidedly Neo-Progressive. He simply will not concede a point or discuss a point, which does not fit this mindset. Another perhaps more disturbing issue is Nash's like of primary sources throughout his work. The majority of his sites are from other historians' works. But before you think of moving on and passing this work up understand a few basic things about it. First, by no means am I questioning Nash's historical ability or accuracy. Second, this work provides a novice student of history and excellent foundation to start to build an understanding of the Colonial Period on. Moreover, Nash's analysis though I find fault with it is still holds water in the historical community through refinements and redefinitions of his point. I suggest that any one seeking to get a handle on the Colonial period or start a study of this era should start here. However, do not read this work and take it as anything other then a meager beginning; instead, use it as a stepping stone to branch out into other works by Winthrop Jordan, William Cronon, Edmund Morgan, Bernard Bailyn, and Laurel Ulrich.

5 out of 5 stars A View From All Angles.......2000-08-29

Gary Nash scratches beneath the surface in his analysis of the deomographics of colonial America. He skillfuly reveals the interaction between Europeans, native Americans, and Africans in the years preceding the American Revolution. Nash brings an important missing element to the mix by exploring how native American and African cultures affected European society, offering a refreshing look race relations. For once, readers are given a glimpse of the proud and unshakable cultures of these two exploited peoples.

Red, White & Black compares race relations between several different cultures and regions. Nash not only spouts statistics; he helps the reader to understand why certain peoples fought and why they formed alliances during this volatile period in our history.
