Excellent introduction to empricial finance.......2005-11-08

This is fast becoming one of my favorite books, simply because it packs so much into one volume (where I previously had to turn to three). "Quantitative Financial Economics" rivals Bodie, Kane and Marcus, and Elton and Gruber in scope and quality.

It almost goes without saying, but this book is much better than anything by Frank Fabozzi.

No one book can contain everything, but lord knows Cuthbertson and Nitzche try. Whew!

If I had to recommend a single book to someone who had the energy and discipline to teach themselves the basics of modern finance, this would be the book I'd recommend. I'd also recommend this as an excellent "one stop shopping" refresher for PhD in Finance candidates who are about to take comprehensive exams, for this work serves as a very strong and efficient outline of the most important topics in empirical and academic finance.

Weaknesses are few, but I will say that the chapters of foreign exchange have a "tacked on" quality to them that does not compare to the strengths of the other chapters on CAPM and EMH.

An additional strength is that Cuthbertson and Nieztche are United Kingdom-based authors, and so the tone throughout is one of conscious international focus and attention. Bodie Kane and Marcus and Elton and Gruber often allude to an implicitly US biased market tone, which, as global capital efficiency increases, is becoming a liability.

This is an excellent, highly recommended work for an introductory text, a support text for intermediate studies with a particular focus, or for support and review for advanced students. Cuthbertson and Nietzche have every reason to be proud, and "Quantitative Financial Economics" should be used by undergraduate and graduate programs, and widely available in reference libraries.

Excellent Book Emphasizing Time Series.......2003-04-06

This book contains one of the clearest discussions of the CAPM model that I have found anywhere. It is also quite rigorous. It also contains one of the most vague treatments of utility functions in existence. Overall this is an outstanding book on financial economics. Potential sophisticated readers should be aware that the book does rely almost exclusively on time series analysis and therefore is subject to the limitations associated with the same. But for a good clear introduction of the subject from a time series point of view the book is really hard to beat.

Excellent Introduction to Financial Economics.......2000-06-22

An excellent book to start understanding quantitaive methods in financial economics. This could serve as one of the best introductions to the first-timers. The author has taken care to explain the concepts in a lucid manner to prepare the student to take on the concepts at a greater detail. He even touches upon complex issues like stock market 'anomalies' and models of noise trader behaviour. The discussion on 'rational bubble'is also quite helpful. On the whole, a very good text to understand competing theoritical models in financial economics and their applicability in various markets like stock, bond and currency market.

A great - but sad - series!.......2000-04-09

This is a truly remarkable series of books for anyone interested in the final "whatever happened to" for celebrities. Lentz does a great job at noting the deaths of just about everyone you could think of that were involved in films, television, etc. during the course of each year. I'm always amazed at how many of these folks have died during a year, and at how few have been mentioned in the regular media. Kudos to Lentz for giving a final tribute to the many others. The detailed filmographies are also very helpful, as are the many sources he notes to make further research helpful for the reader. The books are also heavily illustrated, which is very helpful in identifying those actors with a familiar face, but an unfamiliar name. A+ to Lentz.

The book is really an excellent reference in RF propagation models. The book covers all of the basics of RF propagation and environmental noise and in a well written and organized way. I like the book and I strongly recommend it for those who work in this field or interested in it.

This book covers all of the essentials of radiowave propagation and environmental noise and in a good level of detail. I have numerous other books on the subject and, while others may outshine it on individual topics, it offers even, well thought-out coverage of all the essential topics within radiowave propagation for Land Mobile radio. It is a must for those who design Land Mobile Radio networks.

Outstanding, Self-consistent, very well referrenced.......1999-08-27

The book is really a very good reference in RF propagation models. Also, topics like diversity, fading, sounding techniques, multiple inteference issues are thouroughly presented. I strongly recommend it to all of the GSM, PCS, and CDMA network designers. Diffraction is very well explained and there should be no problem applying it in the real world after reading this book.

The book gives great insight into the mechanisms on which the Web works and is a valuable tool for anyone trying to do web traffic management or a small embedded web server. Plus nothing is more 1337 than to telnet into a port 80 and surf with self written HTTP headers

Invaluable vade mecum.......2003-03-12

This is a nearly perfect book both for learning HTTP and for an HTTP reference. HTTP is a small, simple protocol, and this is reflected in this book's small size. Great sequence diagrams illustrate the basic HTTP transaction which is detailed in less than ten small pages. And you will probably soon find yourself with several post-it bookmarks or dog-eared pages.

The book could use an explanation of HTTP proxies and gateways and a list of common user-agents. But any more and it would be too long.

I didn't realise I needed it!.......2003-02-17

If you develop your own web applications then this book is invaluable! You don't realise that you need it until you know what's in it. An overview of HTTP headers, client methods and server response codes along with URL character and media type tables makes for a great pocket reference!

The O'Reilly pocket references are so concise that they are not really meant for someone who is totally new to the subject. They can however be the ideal way to provide an overview to anyone who wants to know the basics of the topic.

The praise of other reviewers is well met. Overall, this is a very good book and every CGI programmer and anyone else doing Internet programming should buy it.

My only complaint is that it doesn't group information based on servers and is missing some server-specific items that are important, although they are not part of the Spec.

Incredibly short, but packed with info.......2001-11-15

This is the smallest and shortest book I have probably read since first grade. I did not realize it, at the time of ordering, that this is actually a miniature book. It actually does fit in your pocket.

The HTTP specification is relatively small and simple. This book covers it all. I was able to complete it in two hours. It was refreshing to have such a brief and concise reference available. This book certainly did not fall into the trap of elaborating to the point of irrelevance. I fully recommend this book.

But if you want to really understand how and what happened to people in the 'advanced, cultured, sophisticated 20th century", it's a good book to read. Appalling, but crucial read to understand how truly brutal the conditions were in Europe (not just at this one camp). Disturbing, but as such topics go--a 'good read'. We just can't let this happen again (and must stop what's happening now).

A Great Book.......2007-01-10

This book is an eye opener. It shows what human beings will do just to survive. I always heard about the horrors committed on the prisoners by soldiers but not about the prisoners turning on each other. I was able to see all sides in this book. There were evil SS men and yet there were ones that showed compassion. There were prisoners that would beat and starve other prisoners and ones who stuck together through all. A wonderful read but I would have liked to know more at the end though... more of her life after the war was over.

Attention-grabbing, authentic.......2006-04-23

This book deserves a wider audience. The first-person style and authentic detail provides a unique perspective to the horror of the Nazi prison camps. The stories must be told, and passed to the next generation. I do not share the author's heritage, politics, nor gender, but yet her stories spoke to me - both to add insight to the infamous camp brutality, and to show how many inmates managed to survive in a factory of death. These stories will make you think not only about your social values, but your concept of life itself. Read it.

The Grotesque - Truth that Sounds Like Fiction.......2006-03-09

One of the constant tones in reading Holocaust memoirs is their unrelenting objectivity from the people who went through this terrible experience in their description of events. They are neither bitter or hateful, but simply telling what happened. Unfortunately, I did not consider the style of the writing in this book had conveyed this feeling, it appears to be disjointed, it jumps backwards, and forwards which made it difficult to follow. Possibly the problem was with the translation, through which the author's tone was lost. Some of the events that were describe have been told before with different nationalities, and identities ... that is to be expected.

Interesting Account From Woman Prisoner.......2006-03-03

I especially liked this book because it appears to be one of the few accounts giving a woman's perspective on the experience at Auschwitz-Birkenau.

a subtle mix of interesting and boring.......2004-09-05

Parts of this book were interesting- I especially liked the first couple of chapters, where Moore shows how explosively the Jewish community in Miami and Los Angeles grew, and why these cities were so attractive to American Jews. She also tries to explain why Jewish-black cooperation was so common; in Miami Beach, both were fighting against similar types of housing discrimination, and Jews had no convincing reason to oppose fair housing for blacks while opposing it for themselves. (Although it is not clear why Los Angeles Jews adopted similar political views when they seem to have had far less discrimination to contend with).

But much of the middle of the book settles into the rut of blow-by-blow community history, with an unexciting listing of which rabbi did what in which neighborhood. She generalizes about differences between Sun Belt and Frost Belt Jews without backing up her generalizations, she barely mentions Orthodox Jews, and she barely mentions the evolution of Sunbelt Jewish communities over the past few decades.

On balance I am glad I looked at this book, but am not sure if I really needed to read every page and every chapter.
