I expected a guide that would assist in determining where we were in the business cycle. This wasn't really it. The book is structured more like an encyclopedia - analyzing each indicator in detail and in isolation. A fine addition to anyone's economic reference books, but disappointed me by failing to treat the economy as an organic whole.

True to the style of The Economist, this book makes everything seem easier than it really is. However, for people who spend too much time thinking about economic issues, this is actually rather refreshing, much like a cold beer after a long day's work.

Some examples: "In the long term, the growth in economic output depends on the number of people working and output per worker (productivity)" (Page 41); Or "In general, the more optimistic consumers are, the more likely they are to spend money. This boosts consumer spending and economic output" (Page 93)...

...One begins to yearn for the days where economics was more of an explanatory and less a mathematical science.

The guide is divided into a number of chapters discussing issues and examples related to
- How economic activity is calculated, and what the main indicators GDP/GNP/NNI capture and do not capture, as well as what changes in these indicators or their components mean.
- Employment indicators such as employment by sector or the unemployment rate
- Balance of payments and fiscal indicators, such as tax revenue or budget deficit
- Consumer indicators, such as disposable income or consumer confidence and their significance
- Investment and savings indicators, such as investment intentions or sales/inventory ratios
- Business indicators, including business conditions, auto sales, construction orders and other common stats
- Exchange rates and financial market indicators, such as interest rates and money supply.
- Prices and wages, like the effect of oil price changes, among others

Coverage of the most common and widely available indicators is fairly comprehensive. Given the simplicity of the book, it is better to have a certain level of economic knowledge and opinion to be able to put the content in context. Not much different to reading The Economist, really.

The book itself will be of great use for those analysts who evaluate country risk analysis. Economic indicators sometimes tend to be hard to understand, but this guide makes them easy to comprehend and relate to each other.

As the title says, this book can help you make sense of economic indicators. The more you know, the easier it is for you to understand the economical aspects of society, and this seemed to add a lot more to my knowledge, and it clarified other thoughts.

The author harnesses empirical data but fails to put forth any meaningful hypothesis concerning the declining value of money in third world countries. I find the scholarship a bit narrow-minded. For example, the idea that the devaluation of the peso is the systematic outcome of the free currency market is poorly hatched and hardly researched. The author fails to address the geo-political landscape as potential causes for this loss of value and refuses to discuss the issue of NAFTA in a coherent way. My thinking is that the author is a pampered, ivory tower intellectual who has lost touch with his ability to reason.

This book has EXTREMELY poor tabs of all the songs, not the actual versions. Unless you are a total beginner, this is NOT the book you want. Dig around and find the old guitar mags instead otherwise you'll be disappointed like I was.

I found this book really helpful. If you are a Jim Croce fan, then I'm sure you'll agree that it's truly packed with his greatest hits. All the songs in the book are on his album, "Photographs and Memories". It's easy to follow, including slowers songs as well as tougher, faster hits by this legendary favorite. There are tablatures as well as chords written in the score. It makes a great gift for an inspiring guitarist!

Examples hard to read and hard to understand.......2006-10-17

As someone else noted, the examples are in tiny type.

More seriously, I found the examples to be hard to follow because of overly-similar variable names and unnecessary complexity. Often tries to show several concepts combined in one long example instead of one short example for each.

Good concept but trying to cram too much material into too few pages.

Probably better as a reference then a beginner's guide........2005-06-14

This is a decent book on JavaScript. The format consists of a detailed explanation of a concept or technique then example code. It's filled with many useful examples both large and small. This book has a lot of good information and probably could have benefited from being a bit longer. Many areas were covered including event handling, debugging and objects. There was also a great chapter on cascading style sheets (Probably just a setup for the next chapter on DHTML).

The code is displayed using screens shots of the code in a notepad window on the author's computer. At times it was difficult getting the whole picture of the code across multiple screen shots. It was sometimes difficult reading and typing code from these screen shots as well. I had a lot of errors because I couldn't tell the difference between a single and double quote or between a comma and period. This was more of a problem with the lengthier scripts. Also, the order of the chapters wasn't very helpful either since many concepts were used in early chapters but not explained until a later chapter.

This book is definitely more of a reference than a book on actually teaching the fundamentals of the language. Though as a reference it has far fewer pages compared to a code bible or cookbook. It's probably better for someone who wants to cut and paste code or is already fairly fluent in another programming/scripting language.

I bought this book and it had some printing errors, but I contacted the publisher and got a new copy overnight. They have fixed the problem since so I don't believe you will find the same issue. If you like learning step-by-step, this is the book for you. Easy to follow and great for some new to Javascript. The book is well organized and explaines javascript concepts in quick concise explainations. All of the examples are easy to follow and focus on one topic at a time.

Make sure you get second (or greater) printing.......2004-11-05

The publisher has now provided me with a corrected copy so I would like to update on my negative remarks made previously. This an excellent book for beginning JavaScript programmers and it also makes a good reference (or cookbook) for experienced programmers. If you need a jumpstart into the world of clientside scripting this is the book I recommend. Give it 5 stars now.

[Old review: I have just received this book in its first printing of the 2nd edition.
Unfortunately the publishers have let the author down badly.
This book would have rated 5 stars from me if it did not contain bad printing errors which cause most of example code in the diagrams to be invisible.
Hold off on this one until the next corrected printing.]

This book has provided a wealth of knowledge and insight into the battles fought by the US prior to 1965. The book arrived as promised by the retailer.

Enjoyable and very educational.......2006-08-14

Each first battle of each war where the US fought is described in terms of training, equipment, doctrine, and political factors. The analysis of the performance of US troops is critical and focused to describe both the successes and failures, especially the failures.

The common theme is that US troops faired poorly in the majority of their first battles, but the leaders were able to adapt and learn from the failures, except for Vietnam where the first battle had mixed results that were incorrectly perceived that a war of attrition and casualty ratios would bring success.

Another common theme is that by reducing the military to a garrison army relying on conscription to fight wars, resulted in severe losses in those units who fought the first battle, but also it took over one year or more to fully prepare and successfully deploy combat effective units above the regimental level.

Learning how to use new military innovations also had an influence on how US forces fared and the amount of casualties suffered, but not preparing and analyzing the destructive power of new weapons (rifled musket in the Civil War, machine guns in World War I), US forces took thousands of casualties until the training doctrine was revised to account for the increased lethality on the battlefield.

Overall, am personally very glad to have purchased this book and add it into the collection. Once started reading this book, quickly went though each chapter as they flowed very well. The diagrams/ maps of each battle are also informative and helps the reader understand the battles and locations of the units engaged.

This Is Mandatory Reading at West Point.......2001-10-21

As the title indicates, West Point cadets are required to read this book (or at least they used to be when I was a cadet) to understand the role that first battles have played in American military history. The reason cadets are required to read this book is because the U.S. record during the first battle of most wars has been less than stellar. Citing examples like Task Force Smith in Korea and our first battle in North Africa during WWII, the authors expose flawed strategies, low training, and poor equipment. Many times the military enters a war completely unprepared because the normal cycle of demobilization after a conflict reduces the funding and attention our leaders pay to military preparedness. This is a fantastic book to read if you wish to understand the issues and constraints which military leaders and our country usually have to overcome following our first engagement. Given that our "first battle" in the war on terrorism has already occurred, this book could help leaders think through the issues that will be necessary to change our military readiness, as well as homeland security posture to suppress terrorism to more acceptable levels.

A must have for any military library. As a student of military history, I am rereading the book more than ten years later. First Battles is still as relevant today as it was in 1990.

Charles E. Heller and William A. Stofft assembled a distinguished team of American military history experts to examine the first major battles fought in each of the nations wars through the Vietnam conflict. This is militay history at its best, dramatic, insightful and informative, not only for an audience in uniform but also for any American interested in how the military functions in our society. The descriptions of battles ranges from well known actions such as Bull Run in the Civil War to the savage jungle fighting at Buna, New Guinea in World War II. I frequently refer to America's First Battles as I prepare my lectures on American military history. We can only hope that the editors will consider a new edition in the future to take the story through the triumph of Desert Storm, and the confusion of the Clinton administration. A military history classic.

A highly detailed but unpolished account of a famous case........1998-06-27

Dr. D'Alessandro presents details of the Sacco Vanzetti case that reinforced my own opinions of this travesty of American justice. That is not surprising in view of the fact that I, along with the good doctor, grew up in Providence in the same neighborhood as Joseph Morelli. Everyone, it seems, with the exception of the law knew, that the Morelli gang had stolen the payroll, killing two people. They bragged about it. Everyone knew that the metal boxes which had contained the payroll were thrown into the deepest end of Canada Pond. So I am not at all surprised that this author believes that the two anarchists were innocent and were railroaded by the establishment. The book is occasionally laborious but does maintain the reader's interest. It is clearly the work of someone on a mission and it reads more like a textbook than a polished novel. Even so I found it to be good reading by an enthusiastic writer.

Postscript to the review from Minneapolis.......1998-06-26

I would like to correct an error in my earlier review of "The Verdict of History Sacco and Vanzetti." In my eagerness to get out some information about this book, I unforgivably submitted the review when I was only 80% through the book. Dr. D'Alessandro does include a chapter which refutes points made by "guilty" authors like Montgomery and Russell. In fact, this is probably the most effective section of the book although it does, in my opinion, suffer somewhat from illogic and lack of focus. Also, the backward references are hard to follow because the book has no index. However, I apologize for my mistake.

Frank M. D'Alessandro's book is not for the first-time Sacco and Vanzetti reader. "The Verdict of History on Sacco and Vanzetti" is the fourth book I've read on the subject, and I still found it difficult to follow. The writing and organization are both poor. There are few references given in the test, and there is no bibliography. Dr. D'Alessandro is a very strong supporter of the innocence of the two Italian anarchists and makes no attempt at a balanced presentation. He does, however, make some strong points which had not occurred to me before. I would like to see the same material presented in a more formal, rigorous way with refutations on the points made by recent "guilty" authors like Francis Russell.

An instructive read.......2004-04-11

Personally, I have found on many instances, a baffling logic concerning the way machine-human interfaces operate, thus it came as a pleasant surprise to read Asaf Degani's book: Taming HAL. Starting with relatively simple devices, such as portable phones and bedside alarms, Dr. Degani walks us through the logical pathways that we expect, what the designer created, and ultimately how the machine behaves when interacting with the user. The result, often, is not a pretty picture: unexpected outcomes.

Yet, as Degani points out, many of these systems had flawed logic rules built into them by designers that neglected predominate stereotypical or cultural mores that most individuals expect of how systems should operate. Moreover, the presentation of machine modes frequently beguiles the user into thinking the device is operating in one fashion, whereas in reality it is functioning in another. Using logic diagrams, Degani analyses a variety of simple and complex systems and demonstrates that the end-result can range from the annoying to the deadly.

Some of the case studies will astound the reader: for example, the grounding of the luxury cruise liner Royal Majesty on the shoals of Nantucket. However, these bizarre tales become more comprehensible when one sees that the professionals entrusted with operation of the vessels in question failed to understand the true nature of the automatic systems that were supposed to guide and assist them. Understandably, Degani focuses much attention on aircraft systems (his specialty), and I would have liked to see more examples in the medical and computer fields, but the book contains extremely useful information to both laypersons and professionals alike, and is a great read.

Taming more than just HAL.......2004-01-29

I have finished reading TAMING HAL and here's a short description of my experience: The book is well-structured--from simple examples to greater generalizations, with very smooth transitions. Secondly, it is very well written, with some passages providing more excitement and suspense than an average Tom Clancy chapter. I definitely had a great time reading it and I feel that most people will do too. It is very easy to read and understand but very informative at the same time. The last chapter has a great collection of guidelines that are applicable in many technical areas beyond human-machine interface design. To sum up my reading of this book--I learned a lot and enjoyed it greatly.
