Fifteen years and one Caldecott Medal after its publication, Chris Van Allsburg's The Polar Express is as fresh and magical as ever. And now an anniversary edition, including the hardcover book, a CD and audiotape featuring a reading by actor Liam Neeson and music by composer Michael Moss, and a special bronze ornament designed by Van Allsburg, renews the wonder and charm of this holiday classic.
One Christmas Eve, a bathrobe-clad boy boards the mysterious Polar Express train on its way to the North Pole. Arriving in the mystical polar city, the boy is thunderstruck when Santa chooses him to be the recipient of the very first gift of Christmas. Shyly, the boy asks for his true heart's desire--one silver bell from the harness of Santa's reindeer. His wish is granted, and the train begins its return trip. But alas! The boy has a hole in his pocket, and the cherished sleigh bell is lost... forever?
Author-illustrator Van Allsburg, who also received the Caldecott Medal for Jumanji and a Caldecott Honor for The Garden of Abdul Gasazi, is a creative talent beyond compare. The timeless splendor of his unique, breathtaking illustrations and quiet story will undoubtedly stay with the reader for a lifetime. (Ages 3 to 8) --Emilie Coulter
Amazon.com Audiobook Review
The Polar Express book and CD gift set is a charming collage of enchanting sounds, lyrical words, and climatic storytelling. Read by Academy Award-winning actor William Hurt, author Chris Van Allsburg's children's classic--a winner of the Caldecott Medal--is accompanied by a handsome melody and the sweet sounds of sleigh bells, train whistles, and spirited cheers from hundreds of Santa's elves. The composition stirs the listener's imagination, bringing to life the magic of Christmas. Coupled with a hardcover book (and a special gift from Santa's sleigh), listeners can read along and gaze at luminescent drawings page after page. The Polar Express touches the imagination of those "who truly believe." (Running time: 11 minutes, one cassette) --Cate Bick

Christmas Classic.......2007-10-15
I bought this for my sister who is a 2nd grade teacher. She gave it to an underprivileged child in her room. The child was amazed at how beautiful the drawings were...she said she was the luckiest child in the world. This book made my Christmas!
A Classic Christmas Story.......2007-05-24
One Christmas Eve a boy laid in his bed, all of the sudden he heard something. He heard a sound so different. A friend once described this sound to him. It was The Polar Express.
The Polar Express tells a fiction story of a boy who rides on The Polar Express train one Christmas Eve. The North Pole is where Santa was a waiting to give the first gift of Christmas. That gift will be given to someone on that train. Everyone hopes it is them but only one, only one can get the first gift.
I bet at one time or another you have all heard this story. It is a classic. The author, Chris Van Allsburg, tells this story so well. He also uses meaning beyond this books reading level. Chris says "Though I've grown old, the bell still rings for me as it dose for the ones who believe." If you read this quote once you will just think it's about believing in Santa. When you read it again and think about it, it could mean anything. It could mean believing in yourself, friends, family, ECT.
Even though a bell dose not ring for all of these reasons still believe, it's the best thing you can do.
The Polar Express By Chris Van Allsburg.......2007-05-23
This is a good book for kids becuase it states that any thing is possible. The genre may be fiction, but it still teaches a valuable lesson. The story is set in modern times and takes place in the winter. The author does a good job at explaining what the scenery looks like, een with out the graphics.Any one who likes christmas of all ages will like this book. The main character seems to be outspoken and mellow.the story is much the same with other books also called
The Polar Express by other authors, but it still teaches a valuable lesson for kids. Overall, I give this book a 4 out of 5
"The Polar Express" awesome book review.......2007-05-23
"The Polar Express" is a timeless story meant for all ages. It forces us to think about the disadvantage of growing up. When it's Christmas Eve a young boy suddenly hears a train whistle outside his window. He is welcomed aboard the Polar Express by the train conductor and many other children ready to depart on a trip to the North Pole. It is there that they will meet Santa and find out who the special child is that will receive the precious first gift of Christmas.
This fantasy story is one of the best-written about the true meaning of Christmas. The realistic details and dialogue more the story along. The style and meaning behind the plot is enough to make you remember it for years to come.
When reading "The Polar Express" all you think about is meeting Santa and discovering the gift of Christmas. Anyone who likes a well-told story with a moral to remember will love this book!
Magic.......2007-05-13
This is such a wonderful heartwarming story. I have read this to my classroom for years and now share it with my own child. Terrific. And of course the illustrations are beautiful.

Inspirational technical book for infosec professionals.......2007-04-28
The Honeynet Project is a fascinating project researching hacker techniques by inviting hackers to do their stuff on specially-configured network machines placed on the Internet or internal networks with the specific intention of being hacked. This well-written and inspirational technical book goes into detail on how honeypot systems are configured in honeynets, and how hacker activities are captured and analyzed.
Honeynets and honeypots are specialized tools for analyzing hacker threats. The book focuses entirely on honeynets and honeypots - no more, no less.
If the technical end of network security is not your cup of tea, this book is probably not for you. However, if you are technically-minded information security who understands (at least in principle) how a TCP datagram is constructed, or a network professional with an interest in what hackers might be getting up to on your beautiful network, you will probably enjoy Know Your Enemy. Most of the examples and tools mentioned are UNIX-based but Windows networking gurus shouldn't feel too out of sorts.
Some 21 well-respected members of the Honeynet Project team (the Honeynet Research Alliance), all authorities in their own right on various aspects of network security, contributed chapters on their primary areas of expertise. It is rare to find such an erudite team of authors, and good to read about how they personally developed the technologies described in the book.
Books written by panels of authors usually suffer from a lack of continuity and distinct differences in style, but this one has been superbly edited and reads very well indeed. There are lots of words with just a few few network diagrams, screenshots and program listings, but they are all useful (unlike some texts that seemingly stuff in pictures purely to increase the page count!).
If you have the skills, time, equipment and inclination to consider setting up your own honeynet, you will find Know Your Enemy extremely helpful, especially at the price. Short-cut the learning curve by reading how the pioneers learnt from their early mistakes.
One of the worst books I ever read.......2006-06-29
I have not much to say about this book -- all I have to say is that it's really crappy and pretty out-dated. The worst part I saw about it was IRC logs; over than 10 pages full of conversation logs among script kiddies!
I should have given it 2 stars because it might be good for sysadmins.
Eye Opener with practical knowledge to gain! .......2005-08-02
This book was written during what I call the "Age of Hacker Manuals". I'm happy to report that this isn't another copy and pasted book on exploits and vulnerabilities. This book goes deeper into analyzing attacks by creating Honeynets, purposely undefended networks for the sole purpose of intelligence gathering on the Blackhat community. This is a book for a true hacker, unlike many books that I have read.
Excellent Overview .......2005-06-07
This is the definite resource book for Honeynet and Honeypot, and Intrusion Detection System in general.
Great book.......2005-01-13
I fell in love with honeypots because of this book. They cover everything from beginner to expert. They tell you all you need to know to start your own honeynet. Well done.
Book Description
Following the Soviet invasion in 1979, the Mujahideen defenders of Afghanistan developed and reinforced many natural cave systems to use as supply bases and defensive positions. The Taliban and Al Qaeda further strengthened these positions in the 1990s. Following the events of September 11, 2001, these cave systems have once more come to prominence and sites such as Tora Bora and Zhawar Kili have featured in news headlines around the world. This title provides an analysis of these caves and underground systems, and discusses the U.S.-led Coalition's tactical approach to dislodging the enemy from these fortified positions.

Good for its format.......2007-01-06
A very interesting book, very well illustrated with diagrams and photographs. Not a definitive work by any means but considering that it's only 64 pages (including bibliography and index) it provides good information on the type of warfare encountered by the Soviets and early on by the U.S. I consider it a necessary addition to my GWOT collection.
Ask yourself why you seek such a book FIRST! .......2006-12-28
The preceding reviews on this book seem to straddle the line between the unnecessarily harsh and undeserved devotion.
This book, as I understand it, is more of a guide for historians and scale modelers than a critical military analysis or historical record.
I appreciate the work that author Mir Bahmanyar has both written and compiled. The renderings by Ian Palmer deserve credit for aiding in the basic visual understanding of complexes found in the region.
I would never expect any book with less than 70 pages to provide the material some reviewers seem to demand.
Additionally, this book should not be considered a substitute for military manuals, to do so would starve operational personnel in the theater of volumes of additional classified information.
Good book, great information in BRIEF, valuable pictures and supplemental research material.
Review every book you read, Authors deserve your opinions!
A Hack Job.......2006-09-26
I have to echo some other comments posted on this book, specifically those dealing with the author's prolific use of other writings. Yes, he gave the original writers credit, but how about some original ideas?
The war in Afghanistan is ripe for a full accounting of the Coalition and Afghan efforts, but this book falls short. What could, or should, have been an insightful look into the tactics and history of the Taliban instead read like an Army training manual.
The only reason I gave it two stars instead of one is becuase the background section on Afghanistan is concise and to the point, unlike the rest of the book.
Nope.......2006-08-10
This book is a collection of articles and information from other mainstream books on the topic. It relies heavily on the writings (including one entire chapter) of Lester Grau and Ahmad Jalali. The rest of the information you can google for.
Far better to read what Lester Grau actually wrote. I really didn't find anything of value in this book except for American Cave clearing techniques.
Better Than Nothing.......2005-06-03
Only an under-reported war in a desolate region of the world gives this book value to the average reader and the general public. Other than books and articles published of Soviet/Russian Army experiences that are defensive of their tactics and defeat, this is one of the first popular publications on the subject widely available to the American public. Previous Russian authors downplay current American successes in technology and tactics - while at the same time explaining away Russian failures using similar methodologies. While the book has value for it's unique publication - it tries to be a definitive work on the subject and disappoints the serious reader.
As a computer combat simulations manager and modeler for the US Army, the only value of this publication for me - lies in its 3 dimensional maps of cave complexes. Being able to put these generic maps on the computer allows our combat planners to wargame different ways of defeating and destroying these complexes.
One cannot take political sides as does this book and still be a dispassionate provider of information! Political comments on our national leadership are out of place in a publication such as this. The Russians are still miffed at our successes in Afghanistan (such as they are)- and Russian sources used as background in this book show through very transparently.
Modern technology, weaponry and tactics are put up against cave dwelling enemies whose defensive stance goes back to the beginning of time. Even with a full arsenal of high tech weaponry - our soldiers - "boots on the ground" still must do similar search and destroy missions as did their tunnel rat counterparts in Vietnam and our WWII soldiers on Okinawa.
This is a region of the world that holds a fatal attraction to Western Civilization. Modern armies of Colonial Great Britian, the Soviet Union and the United States Coalition have either been defeated or been treated roughly by the local warriors. Tora Bora was the US 10th Mountain Division's baptism of fire - and they finished the battle with no decisive outcome in the contest - with bin Laden escaping in the confusion. American superiority in logistics saved the day for an American Force given poor intelligence, and surviving an initial ambush. American troops - working at extreme altitudes saved weight by ditching their rear trauma plates on their Interceptor Vests - and suffered a high rate of back wounds when caught in a Tora Bora crossfire.
As experienced for 11 years by the Soviet/Russian Army, followed by the American Coalition Army from 2002 forward - high altitude in combination with a mountainous, barren, rough landscape - channeled military operations and logistics through very predictable roads, tunnels and airports - all static targets for what Ralph Peters calls the 21st Century Warrior Class - highly armed and un-uniformed transnational fighters fighting western military forces assymetrically - their strengths to our most obvious logistic road and airport bound weaknesses.
Call them the Mujahideen, Taliban or Al Qaeda, or whoever comes after - the topography and altitude determine all basis of current military operations in Afghanistan. The cave complexes are geographic sanctuaries - very much like the Black Hills of the Dakota's in the 1890's to our outlaws and renegade Indians. Easy places to hide - hard for heavily armed - logistics burdened Western Armies to get to and defeat.
With friendly sanctuaries in Pakistan and it's Baluchistani provences; treacherous warlords; a narco producing and trafficing hub, smuggling and lawlessness - the United States Coalition has a full plate - no matter how or who calls the military game. Throughout history - the native Pushtans have always had a military advantage over occupying armies.
As entertainment and an introduction to our most obscure front on the war on terror - the book has some value. Reviews of weapons systems and DOD pictures show the book's target audience needs such introductory material. The superficial treatment and "fluff" of the filler part of the book aims more at the casual civilian reader than at any military audience - but fails to give a proper perspective. Afghanistan has tortured itself for a thousand years - and our presence has now been noted into their history.
The internet has better tunnel pictures available from many sources (including some returning veterans working at our site!). The US military has already published lessons learned on weapons, equipment and tactics from the "early on", Afghan experience. It is disappointing the author failed to include this data. Winning or losing this war will not be by body count as the book surmizes. He who collects the most warlords "wins".
We will never be the ones who write Afghan history. Hopefully - we'll be better thought of militarily than by those who wrote this book!

Mavericks, Miracles, and Medicine brings to life stories of the pioneering geniuses, eccentrics, and freethinkers who moved beyond the conventions of their day at great personal risk—and often with tragic results—to push forward the boundaries of modern medicine. From Werner Forssmann, who was so confident in his theory that doctors could insert a catheter into humans’ hearts for diagnostic purposes that he inserted one into his own heart, while watching on a live X ray (and was basically thrown out of the profession, only to be awarded the Nobel Prize just before his death many years later), to Anton Von Leewenhoek, a draper and part-time janitor who discovered the existence of protozoa, bacteria, sperm, and blood cells; from Wilhelm Roentgen, who developed the X-ray machine in his basement with a single cathode ray and some cardboard, to Jean-Baptiste Denis who gave the first-known blood transfusion (with sheep’s blood) and was later charged with murder (on manufactured evidence), Mavericks, Miracles, and Medicine is populated with the heretics and visionaries who forever changed medical science. This fully illustrated publication is the companion volume to The History Channel mini-series of the same name.

Fabulous!.......2005-10-17
Risk-takers and rebels, they frequently challenged conventional wisdom and stirred firestorms of controversy. Some were ridiculed, even reviled, in their own time. Yet these same people made some of history's greatest medical discoveries, changed the path of medicine, and opened up the prospect for further lifesaving advances.
A unique journey through some of the greatest moments in the history of medicine, MAVERICKS, MIRACLES & MEDICINE tells the stories of how these remarkable individuals made their discoveries often while facing daunting challenges.
Medical Pioneers who risked everything to save lives........2003-09-17
Washing one's hands was a revolutionary idea back in sick houses in the 1840's...was it really too much trouble to keep one's hands spiffed up while delivering babies? This book explores many medical marvels taken for granted; such as the discovery of the x-ray, and how kidney transplantation evolved. It is told in a way that facinates. Who would be brave enough to innoculate one's own child against smallpox way back when such a thought could result in inprisonment? Yet, these brilliant medical amatuers dared to venture into areas that placed them in a most unflattering light. These smart people were true mavericks; a type of individual who was smart enough to see past medical tradition and look into logical realities in medicine. They were crazy and tenacious enough to hold onto these ideas while everyone else took their sweet time catching up to their revolutionary ideas. Author, Julie Fenster did alot of research into germ theory and the art of medicine. Much thinking is inspired while one contemplates -- where did our modern surgeries come from? This book explores the major discoveries of our modern, western medicine and it also dares to implore those blessed with scientific minds to keep pushing ahead with ideas that may be with held within logical day dreams. I enjoyed the science behind this book because it was written with alot of heart. I think any enterprenour would enjoy this book; all 281 pages of it. Oh yes, and a small word about animal experimentation -- the necesariness of it versus the evils of it are explained as well. Plan on taking your time reading this; contemplation of one's medical practice may be an interesting side effect; (not an adverse reaction, but a positive force indeed.) Good reading!

important and relevant after half a century.......2007-02-26
More than fifty years after its initial publication, this book remains as relevant and prophetic as it is brilliant and exhilarating.
To start, Wiener explains cybernetics in a way that the intelligent layperson can understand; he discusses how human beings, animals, and machines relate to one another through communication and feedback, thus becoming systems that limit or temporarily reverse the universal tendency toward disorganization (entropy). After establishing this framework, he discusses the implications of cybernetics on society. As he takes cybernetic theory to its logical conclusions--that is, accounting for the communication and feedback between human beings, machines, and the environment as a whole--his insights are shown to be profoundly humane and ultimately very inspiring.
This is no ordinary scientific text. There are discussions of Augustinian vs. Manichaean worldviews and their implications; the inevitable spread of dangerous information (such as that resulting in the atomic bomb) despite the strenuous efforts of governments; and the need not to rely on machines--non-human machines as well as "human machines" such as bureaucracies and corporations--to do the difficult work that human beings must do to remain ethical, responsible, and free.
All in all, this is an outstanding book written in lucid, beautiful prose. The book tells us as much about the systems that make up our world as it does about the brilliance, humility, and humanity of Wiener himself. No summary of this book, in blurb or review format, can possibly do justice to Wiener's achievement.
A concerned and conscienscious genius .......2005-07-04
Wiener was acutely aware of the promise and the danger of the new technolgies he was helping to invent. He worked very hard during the Second World War to help develop an anti- aircraft system which would make use of some of his mathematical and technical innovations. However the dropping of the Atomic Bomb turned him wholly against the military establishment and he became an insistent voice calling for regulation of military technologies.
His own vision of a humane society is one in which the cybernetic and feedback elements enable a better managing of the economy and society as a whole. And this when he again was very concerned about the possible destructive elements of technologies which would provide unreasonable means of control over individual human lives. He very much was concerned that a society in which machine- slaves produced everything would deprive humanity of its freedom and dignity.
In other words he saw great promise in the new technologies but also was concerned that might exercise a degree of control over humanity which would make them more harmful than beneficial.
Another Wiener Gem.......2001-12-28
Norbert Wiener was a child prodigy and Professor of Mathematics at MIT from 1919 until his death in 1964. He invented the science of cybernetics (look it up in the dictionary) and the guided missile but refused to help the military during the cold war. This volume includes an open letter published in the January, 1947 Atlantic Monthly magazine entitled "A Scientist Rebels" by Norbert Wiener. An introduction by Wiener biographer Steve J. Heims provides a context for Wiener's works.
If you are at all interested in cybernetics, and particularly interested in the effects it is having and will have on society, this book is must reading. Of course, this book does not approach Wiener's "God & Golem, Inc."(reviewed elsewhere in Amazon.com) for sheer brilliance, but then, what does, except perhaps the "Bahir."
intriguing ideas made plain.......2000-01-21
For those of us who cannot grasp the mathematical, technical version of Wiener's theory of messages in _Cybernetics_, this book is a wonderful stand-in. Wiener wrote this entirely equationless text as a populariztion of his ideas about humans and machines. this book is a fascinating piece of philosophy and sociology also, as Wiener expands his theories and brings them to bear on history, journalism etc. He never loses his scientific perspective though; this gives his writing and ideas a clarity freshness that is uncommon in theoretical writings about society. This is a great and important book
prophetic book.......1999-09-06

Customer Reviews:
The thermostat of society.......2005-03-02
We know the ideal room temperature that we want. There are however all kinds of factors continually changing the room- temperature. We have a means of measuring the temperature continually and making readjustments to keep it steady. The feedback, the report on what is 'happening now in the system' enables us to alter the system to produce the ideal result that we want. This feedback enables us to pilot the system as we want it , and keep it under our control.
So much for the thermostat, feedback, and I believe the basic idea of Norbert Weiner's communications- control world.
But what happens when the ideal result is not agreed upon at the outset? And what happens when the ' measuring' of the system is not a non- ambiguous straightforward matter?
Is it possible that human affairs are so complicated, so informed by what Isaiah Berlin might call 'competing and conflicting ideal ends and values', that a model for their development based on a simple physical analogy is not appropriate? and this even though that model is presented by a very great genius?
This book captures the essential aspects of communications........1999-01-16
The purpose of communication is to control our enviornment. In order to communicate effectively, however, it is essential that we consider the feedback we are getting. Alteration of sending messages is the most important aspect of effective communication. That requires that we consider the audience we are talking to and change our message relative to the feedback and the audience. Weiner presents the philosophic arguments for communication. These concepts remain unchanged since the publication of this book in 1954. This is the finest book on theory of communication I have read. Everyone concerned with improving communication should read this thought provoking book.
