Book Description
Virtually all industrialized nations have annual per capita incomes greater than $15,000; meanwhile, over three billion people, more than half the worlds population, live in countries with per capita incomes of less than $700. Development economics studies the economies of such countries and the problems they face, including poverty, chronic underemployment, low wages, rampant inflation, and oppressive international debt. In the past two decades, the international debt crisis, the rise of endogenous growth theory, and the tremendous success of some Asian economies have generated renewed interest in development economics, and the field has grown and changed dramatically.
Although Analytical Development Economics deals with theoretical development economics, it is closely grounded in reality. The author draws on a wide range of evidence, including some gathered by himself in the village of Nawadih in the state of Bihar, India, where--in huts and fields, and in front of the village tea stall--he talked with landlords, tenants, moneylenders, and landless laborers. The author presents theoretical results in such a way that those doing empirical work can go out and test the theories.
The book is a revision of Basu's The Less Developed Economy: A Critique of Contemporary Theory (Blackwell, 1984). The new edition, which has several new chapters and sections, incorporates recent theoretical advances in its comprehensive, up-to-date treatment of the subject. It is intended primarily as a textbook for a one-semester graduate course, but will also be of interest to researchers in economic development and to policymakers.

Book Description
Today's children and grandchildren are tomorrow's taxpayers and social fabric, and this book contends that we are setting them up for economic disaster with our current policies of federal overspending. Former Representative Tim Penny (D-Minn.) and political scientist Steven Schier take us inside the Capitol to show us the lobbying, arm twisting, and pork barreling that goes on to derail policies designed to reduce the federal deficit; and they offer students the opportunity to try out short- and long-term solutions, to better understand and confront the political, social, and moral payments now coming due.
Book Description
"Too often, Sister, the beautiful things in life are taken for granted, and I realize that you are one of the most beautiful aspects of mine. That's way it's so important for me to tell you now that you are special to me." - Deanne Laura Gilbert
Very few people will ever know you as well as a sister does. She is your connection to the past, present, and future. She remembers all the holidays, birthdays, vacations, and reunions you've shared as a family -- and holds them like treasures in her memory. You can turn to her with all the triumphs and tragedies that each day brings, knowing that she's the one person in your world who will welcome you with open arms and a receptive heart. As you look ahead to the rest of your life, you see your sister always by your side, wherever your individual destinies lead you.
This book is for anyone who has know the joy of having a sister to share everything in life with -- and who has searched for the perfect way to tell her...
"It's funny -- when we were kids, we never thought we'd even like each other, much less love one another. But now that we've grown older and closer, I can't imagine my life without your being an important part of it... I want to thank you... for being the best sister I could ever hope for!" - Donna Gephart

Are you joking?.......2007-07-18
Are you joking? 5 stars? If I could give this book 0 stars, I would. This is not even poetry! It's unimaginative thoughts chopped up to give the appearance of a poem. I got no image or feeling from reading these.
Here is a sample poem:
Is is that
you starve a fever
and feed a cold?
Or is it the other
way around?
Considering this dilemma
I think I'll just
feed both!
Now if a friend said that to me in passing I would get a little chuckle but as a poem?!?! It's just not even original. I am sure she is a wonderful woman. From the title's of her other books it seems like is all about empowering women. Stick to that.
A Guide for a Wonderful Attitude.......2001-04-28
I have not only read the book but have had the pleasure of meeting the author. Both book and author are full of wit, wisdom and insight. The book is very cleverly written and is full of subtle suggestions on how to manage many situations that you might come up against in a positive way. Not only will it make you laugh, it will bring an occasional tear to your eye. You will see a lot of yourself or your friends and loved ones in many of her poems. Definately a wonderful addition to anyone's library. Put this wonderful little book on your "must read" list.
Book Description
The slow air has been largely neglected in many traditional music collections - this book is key to a fuller appreciation of a musical richness which stretches back through the centuries. 118 airs, including the great sean-nós airs as well as Carolan tunes and other airs.

Great Collection for Expanding Your Irish Repertoire.......2007-06-26
I have owned this book for years (mine came with cassette tapes, not CDs!) and originally learned these airs on whistle and flute. I started playing the Celtic harp three years ago and have just begun arranging some of these lovely airs for that instrument, for which they are ideally adapted. It is a wonderful resource for material that is not widely available in other collections of Irish music, which as other reviewers have mentioned tend to focus on reels, jigs, and hornpipes.
O'Canainn is a piper, and these airs are written out exactly as he would play them, with authentic ornamentation. For that reason alone the book is a gem, for anyone who's trying to learn where and how to decorate Irish music in the traditional style.
All the slow airs you need........2006-02-05
This is a fantastic collection of slow airs (some of which you will recognize from having famous ballads set to them). It is also the only such collection in print that is easily available, as far as I know. Most collections don't include many slow airs, probably because they are musical prose compared to the musical poetry of jigs & reels, which tends to make a few airs go a long way (by this I mean they don't tend to have a repetitive theme or structure, or at least it is more subtle). Nonetheless they represent a wider emotional pallette than the generally jaunty dance music, and thus are an important aspect of traditional Irish music. The accompanying CD (available from 'Sheet Music Plus')features all the airs played on a single instrument. The intruments used are: guitar, cittern (bouzouki), bagpipes, accordion, mandolin, tinwhistle, flute, fiddle, oboe, saxophone, piano, harp, concertina, and vocals. You will note that saxophone and oboe are not generally heard in traditional Celtic music. Aside from demonstrating the tunes, the cd's make great minimalist listening, helping you get back to musical basics and providing a solid foundation for understanding Celtic music.
the beauty of slow airs.......2002-03-08
I have been playing these slow airs for a couple of years now. They provide an excellent introduction to a part of traditional Irish music that is often overlooked at sessions where you tend to hear and play reel after reel, along with a few jigs thrown in. Of particular interest is the accompanying double tape set that goes with the book. Here Tomas gives you the title, many in Gaelic(so non-Irish speakers can mangle them infront of their freinds) as well as providing some beautiful examples of sean-nos singing. In fact, itis this singing style that is the basis of the slow airs as many of the tunes do have lyrics which you can follow-up on. I had a particularly successful experience with Mo Ghile Mear, which my band perform regularly. The tunes can be played on any tradional instrument, with the tunes in D and G. One drawback of the book is that only the basic note structure is written out with very little room for interpretation which you will have to do yourself - preferably from reputable performances true to sean-nos style. This problem is also evident on the tape recordings as the notes are played strictly as writ without ornamentation and without any room for pulling the music around. Fortunately there are many recordings of these tunes that bring the written music to life. Enjoy their beauty!
lesser known Irish Airs.......2001-07-19
This is my favorite book of music for playing with my tin whistle(s). I am an intermediate player, and not fast, so slow airs are perfect for me. Many of the tunes are new to me and already I have grown to love the many melodies. The tunes range from a number of Carolan tunes to many traditional tunes, all of which have Gaelic titles. THere is no background information on any of them. I recommend this highly for whistle players who are beyond the beginnining, read music and want to learn beautiful melodies well suited to the instrument. Many other instruments I am sure could use this music book, but I have little background in music so will not render an opinion in this regard. THe subtitle to the book does say, "Suitable for All instruments."

Book Description
Sales of wireless LANs to home users and small businesses will soar this year, with products using IEEE 802.11 (Wi-Fi) technology leading the way, according to a report by Cahners research. Worldwide, consumers will buy 7.3 million wireless LAN nodes--which include client and network hub devices--up from about 4 million last year. This third book in the "HACKING" series from Syngress is written by the SoCalFreeNet Wireless Users Group and will cover 802.11a/b/g (Wi-Fi) projects teaching these millions of Wi-Fi users how to "mod" and "hack" Wi-Fi access points, network cards, and antennas to run various Linux distributions and create robust Wi-Fi networks.
Cahners predicts that wireless LANs next year will gain on Ethernet as the most popular home network technology. Consumers will hook up 10.9 million Ethernet nodes and 7.3 million wireless out of a total of 14.4 million home LAN nodes shipped. This book will show Wi-Fi enthusiasts and consumers of Wi-Fi LANs who want to modify their Wi-Fi hardware how to build and deploy homebrew Wi-Fi networks, both large and small.
* Wireless LANs next year will gain on Ethernet as the most popular home network technology. Consumers will hook up 10.9 million Ethernet nodes and 7.3 million wireless clients out of a total of 14.4 million home LAN nodes shipped.
* This book will use a series of detailed, inter-related projects to teach readers how to modify their Wi-Fi hardware to increase power and performance to match that of far more expensive enterprise networking products. Also features hacks to allow mobile laptop users to actively seek wireless connections everywhere they go!
* The authors are all members of the San Diego Wireless Users Group, which is famous for building some of the most innovative and powerful "home brew" Wi-Fi networks in the world.
Customer Reviews:
Left wanting.......2006-01-12
Lee Barkens book was a major dissappointment. The overall content lacks the descriptiveness one would expect from a book of its title. The reader is lead down an overly linear path of chaotic instruction, devoid of any explanation as to why the chosen method is presented. Wireless Hacking is lacking of any alternative solutions which might highlight or better suit the readers specific needs.
Left with no wiggle room, the reader is lead to believe that the methods presented are the best and only available, which is frequently false and completely misrepresented.
My advice is, spend your money elsewhere. There are far better resources available than what Lee Barken provides.
Just right for me!.......2005-09-30
This book sets out to educate, inspire and be a resource for building community wireless networks. For me the book lives up to my expectations. When dealing with the elements of building a wireless networks, some topics are difficult to get clear information on. Configuring m0n0wall is a good example. Try looking in the forums!
The step by step guides on specific hardware and specific releases of software may make it difficult to keep the book current but has infinitely more value to me than any attempt at a generic explanation. To illustrate this point, it is a long road to install Cacti as a network monitoring tool. You have to install Apache, PHP, Perl, RRD and Mysql before you can even start. I would never have made it, but Michael Mee's step by step guide made it a snap. Some of the software had been upgraded since the book was written but you could choose the same release as in the book. However, I found that the methodology in the book made it sufficiently clear that I could use the latest release in each case.
The fact that the book has many contributors means that each chapter is written by an expert in that particular field. These people have done it and are sharing it to the best of their ability.
There are many photographs and screen shots to make comprehension easier.
If you are interested in WiFi you should have this book on you bookshelf or closer. The word hacking in the title gives me that same feeling as when I am being followed by a State Cop! However, I suppose that others will feel different.
I hope the contributors and editor will endeavor to keep the book up to date as hardware and software evolves.
great book with great ideas.......2005-08-17
I have been wanting to build a community wireless network for a long time now, but digging through google and looking for books turned out to be difficult to find someone else doing something like me, until I found this book. Read the first 30 pages of it in the bookstore and I was hooked, I had to have it. The only problem I see with it is that they seem to do things in a cookie cutter way allowing little flexablity (the 802.11a backhaul is a good idea, but there are other ways than using hardware that is no longer being made and having to do cheap 'hacks' to get things going. I guess thats why it is called wireless 'hacking'. It assumes a good deal of prior knowledge, which for me is great since I am familiar with vi and unix, etc. but a newbie might be a bit confused. They should have made it a bit more friendly for newbies, at times I felt the whole book was somewhat of a hack, like they rushed to throw something together that people could use since nothing else exists like this book. They also seem to focus too much on configuring windows stuff which I find annoying since I use OS X/Linux. Many times it felt like hey were reading my mind, everything I have wanted to do for years, they did. It is a wee bit overpriced though, I would say it's worth $20-25.
The title is somewhat deceptive..........2005-02-13
If you're highly interested in hacking together wi-fi networks and such, you'll probably enjoy Wireless Hacking Projects for Wi-Fi Enthusiasts by Lee Barken and the SoCalFreeNet.org Wireless Users Group. I personally had hoped for something a little different, however...
Chapter list: A Brief Overview of the Wireless World; SoCalFreeNet.org: Building Large Scale Community Wireless Networks; Securing Our Wireless Community; Wireless Access Points; Wireless Client Access Devices; Wireless Operating Systems; Monitoring Your Network; Low-Cost Commercial Options; Mesh Networking; Antennas; Building Outdoor Enclosures and Antenna Masts; Solar-Powered Access Points and Repeaters; Wireless 802.11 Hacks; Index
OK, to be fair, there's a lot of technical information in this book. SoCalFreeNet.org is a group committed to building community access wireless networks in order to offer free wireless coverage for everyone in the range of the network. They go into great detail on the hardware to use, how to configure it, the reason for setting up an access portal, building a firewall for the network, and so on. If this is your interest or if you're interested in starting this type of a network in your area, I don't think there's another book out there that would help as much.
Having said that, I'd probably be a little less harsh if the book had been titled How To Build A Community Wireless Network Based On The SoCalFreeNet.org Model. Someone who is looking to play around with wi-fi in their own house, build cantennas, or possibly control devices over the wireless network will have to dig hard in the book to find what they are looking for. The information is there, but it seems to be secondary to the primary purpose (or what I perceive it to be), which is to spread wireless access to the masses.
So, depending on what you're looking for, this may or may not be a good match for you. I was expecting something different from the title and cover, and was somewhat disappointed...
Book Description
Christmas in Washington is the fascinating, in-depth look at one of the most crucial periods in modern history: the weeks between December 1941 and January 1942, when Churchill and Roosevelt--seemingly on the run after Dunkirk and Pearl Harbor--met at the White House, forging what turned out to be the Grand Alliance--while in the background, a gloomy and confused America went about with their Christmas celebrations.
Christmas in Washington is an authoritative and emotional story of two proud and accomplished statesmen struggling to overcome biases, suspicion, and hubris to create what turned out to be the war-winning alliance.
Customer Reviews:
Four and a half stars..........2007-02-10
I've read a bit about Christmas 1941 when Winston Churchill visited the White House to plot World War II strategy with Franklin Roosevelt. But until reading One Christmas in Washington: The Secret Meeting Between Roosevelt and Churchill That Changed the World by David Bercuson and Holger Herwig, I never realized what a monumental event this was.
The bulk of One Christmas in Washington takes place in Washington, DC. Americans were still stunned by the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and were rather unorganized and unprepared to fight a war with Japan and Germany. Churchill planned to visit the White House despite the objections of almost all staff members on both sides of the pond. Most of what I read previously about this meeting involves funny stories and anecdotes--mostly about Churchill. He was a very demanding houseguest and liked things just a certain way (sherry with breakfast, scotch with lunch, champagne and brandy before bed, etc.). He also sparred verbally with Eleanor. But what I found so fascinating about this secret meeting (which became known as the Arcadia Conference) were the behind-the-scenes maneuvering that occurred during this 3 week span of time.
While Churchill and FDR were meeting, so did their staffs (both military and civilian). There was intense distrust and even dislike between the two camps. At the beginning, the Americans thought that the British were "arrogant know-it-alls" who "were only interested in poaching as much U.S. military hardware and troops as they could get." They also thought the Brits were selfish and untrustworthy. The British thought the Americans were "unorganized, bureaucratic, ignorant of the realities or the war." But halfway through the conference, the two sides realized they were in this war for the long haul and began to compromise and find common ground. Goals were established for the production of war goods. Priorities were set for a "rough war plan." Procedures for the Combined Chiefs of Staff were established, and the groundwork for the Declaration of the United Nations was laid.
One Christmas in Washington is an excellent book that shows just how important the Arcadia Conference was in establishing the "Grand Alliance," which allowed for the integrated efforts to defeat the Axis powers. "Had Churchill not seized the moment--before American war plans had solidified--it is more than likely that such a degree of integration would never have been achieved." My only complaint about One Christmas is that it contains way too many errors of spelling, grammar, typos, etc. With two college professors authoring this book, I would have expected this effort to be free from errors. For me, these flaws were the one thing that kept me from giving One Christmas a five star rating.
Some Interesting Facts but As a Whole Disappointing.......2006-09-17
Perhaps I misread the description of this book. I found the Churchill visit and the negotiations interesting, but from the descriptions I had read of the volume I was expecting not only a narrative about the goings-on in Washington, but stories about how ordinary people reacted to the declaration of war, how the city and country changed, etc.
I feel I must comment about one thing I found very disconcerting: apparently no one proofread or spellchecked this manuscript. I saw numerous, jarring typos and several places where words were left out, so that I had to reread the sentence several times to try to make out what was being said. Very sloppy in such a heavily researched and scholarly book; did they rush it to the publisher in order to meet a deadline?
One Christmas in Washington.......2006-08-25
This book is a gem. It gives a fascinating behind the scenes
insight into the little known ARCADIA conference just after Pearl Harbor. Included are brief biographies of over a dozen major British and American war leaders plus some highly entertaining vignettes of Churchill raising havoc in the White House and dazzling the American public. The authors give a fascinating appraisal of FDR's opaque management style made moreso by the fact that he deliberately kept few written records.
Excellent fly-on-the-wall history.......2006-07-06
For anyone who enjoyed Jon Meacham's "Franklin & Winston" "One Christmas in Washington" is the ideal follow up reading. The challenge for authors Bercusom and Herwig was the narrow time period period (barely two months) that their story covered. However they met this head on owing largely to copious research and their ability to flesh out some of the key figures besides the obvious two. (Indeed my only quibble was that they occasionally told more than I needed to know about a relatively minor figure).
It helps of course when the two principles are such larger than life figures as Churchill and FDR and that there are such momentous world events to discuss.
A great deal has been written about the events in December '41 and January '42 that precipitated and kicked off America's participation in World War II and the alliance then forged between the Us and Great Britain. "One Christmas in Washington" distills much of what we already know and enriches the tale with new evidence and its particular perspective.
The authors are particularly good at showing how allied leaders often quibbled and overcome differences in philosophy and one might even say culture, in creating the alliance that defeated the axis. Also, I've read a lot about FDR and some of Churchill (see the Cabinet War rooms and adjacent Churchill museum in London if you ever get the chance) and must laud the others for their portrayals of these two extraordinary men and the beginnings of their friendship.
The book traces Britain's plight as they stood alone against Nazi Germany. Churchill was desperate for American help and FDR was desperate to give it despite the prevailing isolationist mood in the country. With Japan's sneak attack on December 7, and Germany's foolhardy declaration of war against the US days later, the US was officially part of the second world war and, in an odd sort of way, FDR and Churchill had their wishes answered.
"One Christmas In Washington" takes us into the White House and the British cabinet, abroad a ship off Nova Scotia when the two first met and back to the White House for the dreary Yuletide of 1941. We read excerpts from diaries, letters and cables and listen in on dinner conversations. We follow Churchill to Canada then to Florida and hear what Hitler's gang has to say about Anglo-Americans.
"One Christmas in Washington" is another fine addition to the growing bodies of work on two great men and a terrible war.
Churchill and Roosevelt's Major Plans For WWII.......2006-05-03
David Bercuson and Holger Herwig examine the secret meeting between FDR and Churchill in ONE CHRISTMAS IN WASHINGTON: THE SECRET MEETING BETWEEN ROOSEVELT AND CHURCHILL THAT CHANGED THE WORLD. The opening pages of the book paints a vivid picture of one of the most important meetings to take place: "From the White House to the Federal Reserve Building, from Ottawa to Florida, in these bleak December days, Churchill, Roosevelt, and their aides went about the work of forging the Grand Alliance, ARCADIA, code word for the Washington war conference of December 1941 to January 1942; became the central war venue for shaping the future course of the second World War" (13).
Bercuson and Herwig discuss one of the most pivotal periods during the early half of World War II. Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt made an appointment to meet in December 1941, days after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, at an attempt to map out a strategic plan. However, Bercuson and Herwig concentrate on the personalities of Churchill and FDR rather than technical details of their strategic plan. They also go into detail about Eleanor Roosevelt's reactions toward Churchill and FDR's relationship both politically and personally.
Bercuson and Herwig capture the pressure in which these two most powerful men were experiencing. Churchill wanted to maintain an alliance with the United States, but believed FDR wanted to forge out on his own. The authors emphasize how the US was ill prepared for the war, and Eleanor was correct that Churchill wanted to secure key objectives at ARCADIA ... "the Americans assumed control of the conference almost immediately and the British were forced to give away on almost every issue" (266). This shows the reality that Churchill was no longer at the helm and assumed his role as "second fiddle".
ONE CHRISTMAS IN WASHINGTON is a fascinating story. The book offers yet another insight about World War II, and the relationship between FDR and Churchill. The authors greatly elaborate on the intimate meeting in December 1941 shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. This is a good accompaniment to Jon Meacham's FRANKLIN AND WINSTON: AN INTIMATE PORTRAIT OF AN EPIC FRIENDSHIP.
Book Description
An "entertaining book," raves George Will of The Washington Post, One Christmas in Washington is the fascinating, in-depth look at one of the most crucial moments in modern history: the weeks between December 1941 and January 1942, when Churchill and Roosevelt were together at the White House, forging what turned out to be the Grand Allianceâ"while in the background, a gloomy and confused America went about its Christmas celebrations.
Herwig and Bercuson grippingly recreate the dramatic days of the Washington War Conference of 1941-42, using the diaries, meeting notes and personal letters of the key characters. One Christmas in Washington is the authoritative and emotional story of two proud and accomplished men struggling to overcome their own biases, suspicion, and hubris to create what turned out to be a war-winning alliance.

Exceptional view of history.......2007-07-12
A pivotal moment in history with a dynamic cast of characters. The authors present a riveting portrayal of the meeting between Roosevelt and Churchill a few weeks after Pearl Harbor. Each day brings new challenges that set the course for the conduce oof the war.
Although his visit was an imposition, Roosevelt new that it was essential that they meet face to face to iron out the details for the future.
It is fascinating to see how the tenure of the meetings changed over the course of the days and how the British and americans gained respect for on another.
I couldn't put it down and after it was over I wanted more.

TEN DAYS IN HISTORY VIVIDLY RECALLED.......2005-12-12
With his opening words, "Christmas Eve 1941 broke cloudy and rainy in Washington, D.C. Since the dastardly Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor seventeen days earlier.....," listeners became privy to, no, almost a party to the momentous meeting between Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. It lasted only ten days, but those were days that gave birth to the Grand Alliance and paved the way to victory in war some four years later.
Voice performer Lloyd James narrates the story crisply and distinctly. His voice is unaccented, pleasant to hear. There is no need for the slightest bit of theatricality on his part as the events and the personalities involved provide more than enough drama. It is as if he is an observer, removed from the fears and emotions of those days, simply telling listeners what occurred. And, that is as it should be.
History has well recorded the results of this conference, which went by the code name ARCADIA, yet listeners will be fascinated by the intimate details of those days in the White House as unearthed by Bercuson and Herwig through diaries, meeting notes, letters and minutes.
We're reminded that a meeting between Roosevelt and Churchill might be subtitled "The clash of the titans." Both were world leaders with healthy egos and wary of one another, yet they worked together to hammer out this agreement despite the posturing of other officials in attendance and a less than warm relationship between Churchill and Eleanor Roosevelt.
It will come as scant surprise to most that Churchill could be a challenging house guest. We hear, "The White House was a changed place with Churchill in residence. Simply put, he turned it into the staff headquarters of the British Empire." Opinions of him among the White House staff were divided. Mrs. Nesbitt, reputedly the worst cook in White House history, had done little to please FDR. However, she took great pleasure and pains to serve special meals during Churchill's visit determining that their guest had a "poor-colored and hungry" appearance.
On the other hand, Lillian Rogers Parks, a maid, caused a ruckus upon learning that Churchill always needed a hot water bottle in bed, and had his Scotland Yard bodyguard inject mice with samples from his cigars. If the mouse didn't fall over dead, Churchill would smoke them.
It is such observations that make "One Christmas In Washington"vivid and colorful, it's a remarkable piece of history related in intimate detail. Don't miss it!

A Christmas Memory

Book Description
Here he is generally surrounded by an admiring throng of hostlers, stable-boys, shoe-blacks, and those nameless hangers-on that infest inns and taverns, and run errands, and do all kinds of odd jobs, for the privilege of battening on the drippings of the kitchen and the leakage of the tap-room. These all look up to him as to an oracle; treasure up his cant phrases.

There is nothing in England that exercises a more delightful spell over my imagination than the lingerings of the holiday customs and rural games of former times. They recall the pictures my fancy used to draw in the May morning of life, when as yet I only knew the world through books, and believed it to be all that poets had painted it; and they bring with them the flavour of those honest days of yore, in which, perhaps with equal fallacy, I am apt to think the world was more home-bred, social, and joyous than at present.

Quiet, pleasant reading of an Old English Christmas.......2005-01-03
Very enjoyable reading for those who like to pull up a chair, have a cup of tea, and escape to a simpler, more elegant time. Those who enjoy Christmas stories, or Anglophiles who can never get enough of English history will enjoy this insight into an Old English Christmas from one who was there.
Melancholy little "sketch".......2002-12-21
"But is old, old, good old Christmas gone? Nothing but the hair of his good, gray, old head and beard left? Well, I will have that, seeing that I cannot have more of him."
-- "Hue and Cry after Christmas," from the opening page of Old Christmas.
This book is what Washington Irving called a "sketchbook" -- a collection of impressions about something, gathered into a fictionalized story. It's a melancholy, fond evocation of fading English Christmas traditions of the author's time.
The story's simple: Irving sets himself in the English countryside, where he's travelling one Christmas Eve. At a country inn he runs into an old schoolmate, who invites him home to spend Christmas at the family estate. The friend's father, it turns out, dotes on all things Christmas, and has tuned his household to some of the more quaint and obscure English traditions celebrating the day. That lets Irving include lots of odd little bits and pieces of Christmas tradition, told through the old man, as part of his plot. The book covers a night and a day. The chapters are pieces of that time: the stagecoach ride is one chapter, then "Christmas Eve," and so on through "Christmas Dinner."
I read this every year lately, and it's a nice, low-key, sad and happy little way to mark the Christmases passing. Washington Irving wrote it in the early 1800s -- the dates of most of his "Sketch Book" are right around 1819 or 1820 -- and the story is mostly a reminiscence about even earlier Christmas traditions. Then it took until 1894 for this edition to be printed, with the illustrations by Caldecott. Later the facsimile edition I have was printed, in maybe the early 1980s... For a little book about Christmas past to have made it through all those years, and come down to me in this personal "sketch," is a glad thing. Coming back to the same copy year after year makes a nice little private tradition.
The text to this is available in a few places on the Web. That's an okay way to get to know the language, but a facsimile of the original book, with the illustrations, is still worth the few dollars it'll cost. The Caldecott who illustrated this is the one for whom the children's book award was named, among other things. You need to read this one next to the Christmas tree, not by the glow of a computer monitor.

Ojibwa Warrior: Dennis Banks And The Rise Of The American Indian Movement

Book Description
Landmark court cases in the history of formal U.S. relations with Indian tribes are Corn Tassel, Standing Bear, Crow Dog, and Lone Wolf. Each exemplifies a problem or a process as the United States defined and codified its politics toward Indians. The importance of the Lone Wolf case of 1903 resides in its enunciation of the "plenary power" doctrine—that the United States could unilaterally act in violation of its own treaties and that Congress could dispose of land recognized by treaty as belonging to individual tribes.
In 1892 the Kiowas and related Comanche and Plains Apache groups were pressured into agreeing to divide their land into allotments under the terms of the Dawes Act of 1887. Lone Wolf, a Kiowa band leader, sued to halt the land division, citing the treaties signed with the United States immediately after the Civil War. In 1902 the case reached the Supreme Court, which found that Congress could overturn the treaties through the doctrine of plenary power.
As he recounts the Lone Wolf case, Clark reaches beyond the legal decision to describe the Kiowa tribe itself and its struggles to cope with Euro-American pressure on its society, attitudes, culture, economic system, and land base. The story of the case therefore also becomes the history of the tribe in the late nineteenth century.
The Lone Wolf case also necessarily becomes a study of the Dawes Allotment Act of 1887 in operation; under the terms of the Dawes Act and successor legislation, almost two-thirds of Indian lands passed out of their hands within a generation. Understanding how this happened in the case of the Kiowa permits a nuanced view of the well-intentioned but ultimately disastrous allotment effort.
