A must have for anyone starting in the industry........2002-12-22

I wasn't too crazy about the format of the book, when I first started reading it. Like the reader above mentions, all subjects are introduced alphabetically, and this makes it a somewhat difficult read. However, it is comprehensive and the author touches on almost every aspect of the business. The author has done a great service to people like me who have just started in the industry. I would encourage him to write more books on the subject as it is difficult to find any good books on the subject of Title Insurance.

a comprehensive reference source.......2002-12-19

This is one of the few books that i was able to find on the subject of title insurance on the internet. this is an excellent reference source for individuals who are in the industry. Concepts are intruduced in alphabetical order. However, if you are looking for a book that reads like a textbook or a comprehensive guide, this is not it.

I bought this book in a bargain bin for a dollar and I wish I could get my money back. This book has absolutley nothing to do with the show, it looks like it was written in about a half hour. It's very lame but not in a funny way, a way that makes you feel sad.

This book covers a great range, and is a great addition to any library. From the origins of the instrument to caretaking to technique to music theory and history, it is all here. Do not pass up the chance to own this book, especially at the prices here!!!

An unique window into a bygone era.......2000-03-29

Perhaps one of the broadest accounts of the violin ever written, An Encyclopedia of the Violin is a well-written, fascinating, and at times nostalgic account of violinmakers, performers, violin literature, and more. This is truly an epic and groundbreaking book that covers more information than one would expect from a volume several times larger. Published in 1925, it contains rare photographs of distinguished violins and bows, as well as well as vivid descriptions of intricate details of these instruments, as well as a guide on how make them! Another section is devoted to violin technique, including advice on how to play difficult passages from the violin literature. In addition, there is also a massive dictionary of violinists, containing the author's often insightful analysis into the style of the performers, and also includes their biographical information. An Encyclopedia of the Violin is so all encompassing that it could easily be split up into several fine books-Great European Violins and Their Makers, Guide to Violin and Bow Making, The Art of Violin Playing and Teaching, and Violin Performance from 1800-1925 are just a few of the hypothetical titles that the reader can create exclusively using the material in this unique and monumental book. To top it off, the introduction was written by the famous Belgian violinist Eugene Ysaye, one of the greatest players of all time, and the author's idol as a performer. While some of the material and ideas in An Encyclopedia of the Violin may seem dated to the modern reader, there is much that is timeless and invaluable and will appeal to professional violinists or anybody else that appreciates the sound and beauty of the violin.

What makes a good city? This question has long preoccupied groups interested and involved in the making and remaking of city spaces. In The Moral Economy of Cities, Evelyn S. Ruppert contends that the vision of the `good city' embraced by professionals in the business of city making recognizes the interests of a dominant public, namely middle class consumers, office workers, tourists, and families. This vision stigmatizes certain members of the public like street youth, panhandlers, discount- and low-income shoppers, and the language used to extol the virtues of the good city inherently moralizes social conduct in the city.

Using the redevelopment of the Yonge-Dundas intersection in downtown Toronto in the mid-1990s as a case study, Ruppert examines the language of planners, urban designers, architects, and marketing analysts to reveal the extent to which moralization legitimizes these professions in the public eye and buttresses the very projects they produce. Ruppert's conclusion that economic practices are not free from moral investment encourages the considerable task of re-examining the implications of city planning and development worldwide. The Moral Economy of Cities is mandatory reading for urban studies scholars and practitioners, and their critics.

A How-To Manual With Heart.......2007-09-07

This is a guidebook written with a lot of warmth and heart. Sure you may be able to get the same info online or on base, but it wouldn't be dispensed with the understanding and empathy that Ellie Kay imparts. Her specialty is in money matters so this book has an excellent chapter on that (and who doesn't need a little course correction in that every now and then!) I found her family pre-deployment checklist to be a super resource, even to someone who's been an Army Spouse for 18 years. The profiles and interviews with other military spouses added a human interest angle to a book that was helpful in every respect.

The Corniest Book Ever.......2007-01-31

I am a Navy Wife of four years facing my first deployment as a wife and I found this book to be the corniest thing I've ever read. EVER.

The "comical" stories everyone seems to be gushing over sound like they were pulled right out of a dusty old Reader's Digest. I didn't find the book to be informative and I found the definition section of the book to be incredibly trite and boring.

Example: Term Active Duty, Military Speak: Actively serving and deployable. Spouse Speak: This means your address is written in pencil in address books.

Dear God. How incredibly lame. Military members move. Yes. It's true. We ALL know that. Civilians know this. EVERYONE knows this. This poor attempt at humor is dull and over-used.

I didn't learn ANYTHING from this book and would NOT recommend this to anyone SERIOUSLY looking for information or advice about military life or deployments. You can get USEFUL information by going to your local Fleet and Family Support Center or attending a pre-deployment brief.

Great look at life during deployments.......2007-01-08

This book is a wonderful tribute to all the things that can happen during a deployment. It's a humorous approach to life as we know it in the military. Deployments come and go, it's how we survive them that tells us who we are!
While the very few negative comments on this site suggest the book is not for everyone, I disagree. It IS for everyone. Ms. Kay's book is not a protocol manual on what steps to take at a spouse coffee nor lists the hierarchy of a Family Readiness Group. It IS a book that helps families cope with the everyday life and mishaps that arise during deployment or periods of spearation. It is helpful to hear how others have gone before you, and to know that you are not in this alone.
I found this book to be a great shoulder to lean on, a confidante, and recommended it to my battalion spouses. The idea that "this, too, shall pass" makes me feel that we can always endure more than what we think we can. Deployments are not designed to make spouses stronger, that's just the unintended benefit. (Be sure to read the other books by Ellie Kay, as she has some fabulous tips on finances!)

Heavy on the "O" side of the military community.......2006-11-03

I was given this book as a gift from a dear friend during my husband's last deployment. While I found it very helpful, I couldn't help but feel at times that the contributors didn't really understand what it is like to be on the other side of the ranks. ...the Enlisted Soldier.... All of the illustrations were Officer's wives and families! I found myself asking "what about the issues that face the families of enlisted service members?"

Helpful as the Title Implies.......2006-06-29

Well written, easy read. The author takes the issues faced by todays military families and puts them into such a format allows anyone reading the book to gain helpful insight. I especially love how the author suggests the reader to copy certain pages of helpful hints to give to family and friends. The author makes it clear that it's ok for us to tell our non-military friends or familes what our needs are when dealing with seperations, etc. and suggests easy ways to do so.

Is "right-brain" thought essentially creative, and "left-brain" strictly logical? Joseph B. Hellige argues that this view is far too simplistic. Surveying extensive data in the field of cognitive science, he disentangles scientific facts from popular assumptions about the brain's two hemispheres.

In Hemispheric Asymmetry, Hellige explains that the "right brain" and "left brain" are actually components of a much larger cognitive system encompassing cortical and subcortical structures, all of which interact to produce unity of thought and action. He further explores questions of whether hemispheric asymmetry is unique to humans, and how it might have evolved. This book is a valuable overview of hemispheric asymmetry and its evolutionary precedents.

Great and timely edition........2002-03-14

This book originally apeared in the prespectives in cognitive neuroscience series in 1993, and is the best introduction and review into the subject of hemispheric asymmetry. My earlier concerns were that it was a bit dated, but it is a cornerstone in the field nevertheless.
Hellige points out that every model of hemispheric asymmetry will have to deal with five main points: The cognitive differences between individuals, general computation diferences between hemispheres, the view of the brain as an integrated unit, the development and evolution of hemispheric asymmetry and the fact that there is asymmetry in other species as well.
The book presents extensive data and studies that illuminate aspects of all of these points, and much more. Speculation is reserved for evolutionary discussions, but the author makes sure to present only hard evidence, and to warn the reader when there is controversy. It is not very technical, and for that it is a better exposition of such a complex subject.
Now the best parts of the book are when the author sets out to undermine (still current) popular beliefs about hemispheric asymmetry. There is no simple way to say that there are right or left brained people. This is a gross simplifiation of the facts. For example, Hellige notes that since every task uses multicomponent processing and modules, and since it regullarily activate distribuited locations of both hemisphers, there is no clear division within tasks of hemisphers (perhaps with the exeption of language). Sure, there is metacontrol, but that is another interesting subject. There is also no single dichtonomy between modes of processing of diferent hemisphers. Sayng that left is analytic and linguistic and right visuospatial is another gross simplification. Computation styles vary between tasks themselves. Finally, it is also not the case that there only exists hemispheric asymmetry in humans because of language and tool use. There is evidence for it in rats, birds, old world monkeys, among other species.
This is a great book from a great series, very informative, direct, uncontroversial, as well as a good read. Anyone interested in neurosciences at all should enjoy it. IT is also conforting to see hard science taking the spotlight and not cheap self help psychology. Maybe it is my left brain speaking.

An outstanding review of the research on brain asymmetry.......2000-05-30

Hellige does a superb job of reviewing the field of hemispheric asymmetry. This book is well written and has much to offer to the serious researcher or just the laymen interested in the brain.

I am looking forward to a new edition, that will include the more recent research on the topic.
