Funny - but not helpful........2007-03-18
Someone recommended this book to me as something that would help me deal with my own mother. This book is funny, but if you're having a real problem dealing with your "Jewish mother" and want peaceful ideas on how to cope, this is NOT the book for you. If you just want to read something kinda funny, go for it.
If, however, you are tired of your mother (or father) using the guilt tactics on you, you should try "Toxic Parents" or "Children of the Self Absorbed". These books offer constructive ways to actually get over emotional abuse. I know there is a small chance that you searched for this book looking for actualy help, but just in case, I hope I gave you some constructive options.
Great Book!.......2005-08-27
Very truthful and hysterically funny! I would recommend this to anyone who has a jewish mother (and to others who are not Jewish because some of the stuff in the book applies to all mothers.

Book Description
Global Beat Fusion
The History of the Future of Music Words & Pix by Derek Beres Foreword by Ajay Naidu
Derek Beres is part reporter and part prophet standing in the middle of the eye of the World Music storm that is raining new musical genres on the Earth today, each one fused by the love of song and spirit.
Krishna Das, kirtan artist
I met Derek Beres as a writer interested in shedding light on what was happening in the world of future music. I know him now as a major force pushing this scene in all directions. He has gone so far deep inside that he has become exactly what he writes about. He will forget to write one chapter of this book and that is the one about himself.
Karsh Kale, tabla player/DJ/producer
Derek Beres is a modern-day shaman. He knows new hybrids of electronic and non-Western music deliver the same ecstatic release as ancient tribal rituals of so-called primitive societies, and that the implications go far beyond an ambient groove. For Beres, the fusion of technology and ritual, the reconciliation of mind, body and spirit that electronic world music represents, is not just the cutting edge of modern entertainment but the early stages of a numinous revolution in American culture. In Global Beat Fusion he explains why music is the new religion, and how, in one sense or another, we are all destined to become believers.

Global Beat Enlightenment.......2005-10-05
I loved it! I bought 4 and gave them out to friends for MY birthday! One can literally hear the music in Beres' words as he lyrically weaves a seamless mix of myth, music and ritual...Hit Play...Read on...The Global Beat journey has just begun...
Outstanding, Informative and Comprehensive.......2005-08-09
Talk about having your finger on the pulse! Derek Beres has both hands and feet on it. Beres dives deep into the world music world and makes a compelling case for his thesis that the music we will be listening to in the future (and many of us are already listening--and dancing--to) will belong to no single national or culture but instead will be a true global fusion of influences, styles, attitudes and, of course, sounds. Beres explains the relationship of the traditional to the progressive, puts the music into its proper spiritual and cultural perspective and, most of all, brings it to life with vivid descriptions and poignant insights. No dry hype-filled treatise on the latest pop trends, Global Beat Fusion is a living, breathing guide to a place we haven't yet been but will be visiting very soon.
Enlightening, educational, entertaining!.......2005-08-09
If you like yoga and you like music, you'll love this book! It's an
absolute must!

"It's time to realize TV must be doing something right to reach and affect so many people and that teleliteracy is something to be quantified and upgraded and utilized, not ignored," David Bianculli declares in his defense of teleliteracy--the widespread knowledge of television that ties Americans together in ways other media cannot. He acknowledges the faults of television -- sex and violence to a widespread audience -- but contends that TV has delivered positive role models, good storytelling and likable characters. Bianculli, a television critic for The New York Post and The Philadelphia Inquirer, offers an interesting defense of a much-maligned medium.
Customer Reviews:
Teleliteracy by Bianculli.......2004-06-27
The author explains the role of television in our modern society.
A main thesis of the work is that the TV provides information
which is too important to ignore. The author explains how the
TV has created a global village of local, national and international news. In addition, the television plays classic
movies, shows for children and the daily soap operas. Important
comedy shows provide entertainment for millions of viewers.
The book explains that our television is a necessary part of modern society. It entertains, informs and enlightens in ways
that other media simply cannot replicate. This book is a good
value for the price charged. It has a
considerable constituency in the media and the general public.
Well-written, but fails to convince.......2002-08-03
A rather lengthy argument by a TV critic for respecting television as a medium and appreciating the rich cultural gifts it's given us. The author's right when he shows that new media are always reviled by the protectors of the old, from Plato to the very recent birth of "film studies" as a legitimate field. And yes, many critics of TV are simply following this pro-status quo, kneejerk line of reasoning. But Bianculli goes a little overboard. Yes, a lot of BBC specials and American literary adaptions are high theater, and "The Simpsons" is a very clever reflection and parody of our society. But he has to keep referring again and again to the same thirty shows, in all the 50 year history of TV, to make his point. Obviously, when television is used to adapt literary works, or documentaries, it's a very powerful medium, and kneejerk criticism of it - "Turn TV Off day" including the news, Discovery Chanel, etc. - it's absurd. And he certainly makes his point that what's on TV becomes common knowledge (does anyone disagree?). But popularity isn't a sign that a medium deserves respect. What Bianculli constantly steps around in his at times repetitive treatise is that 99% of TV is, at most, amusing; at worst, appallingly inane. In short, he succeeds in arguing that TV is a superb medium of creative expression; but he fails to convince that the great bulk of what is actually on TV is worth watching.
Good News, Paperback on the way........2000-08-12
How wonderful that Mr. Bianculli's excellent book is being re-released. I read this when it first came out and could not put it down. Mr. Bianculli is a television expert who is not afraid of sharing his knowledge with readers. This is a must have for anyone who owns a television. Mr. Bianculli is an incredibly gifted writer who creates easy-to-read, informative chapters. In short, buy anything written by this man.

grand theft auto vice city how to play book.......2005-10-08
get the book it help me to play the game & win
A little disappointed..........2004-11-10
Okay, firstly, I'm a little late on the GTA:VC thing. Only just bought the PC version in November 2004. At any rate, after being faced with the myriad of possibilities within the game, and the challenges that the many missions and rampages introduced, I opted to purchase the game guide to help me along to the coveted 100% completion.
I typically buy a game guide for any semi-complex game I play on my PC. But this one by far has to be the worst. As far as the missions, rampages, etc are concerned, the guide offered little information over what could be found online or within the game itself.
There is however, a complete guide to all the vehicles, which may be handy to some, but not really for me. Missions are somewhat detailed, with accompanying maps, but generally contain wordy overviews. A series of maps round out this flimsy tome, all of which can be found in various incarnations online.
One glaring oversight is a map/chart for all controls. The bulk of the info you find online is related to the PS2 version, and the manual that ships with the game itself lacks detail. In particular, controls for helicopters never seem to be mentioned in the guide. I'm still trying to find out how to increase my health by means of the local prostitutes.
Overall, it's nice to have a book (albeit a slim one, only 192 pages) to refer to while playing the game, but it lacks any real advantage over trial-and-error, or by looking info up online. I'm just glad I had a $5 Amazon gift certificate, otherwise I would have felt a lot more cheated.
Really helpful.......2004-02-28
Can't solve the missions? Can't find the hidden packages? This book is for you. Of course, it doesn't hurt to improvise to use your own ideas too. The game contains a real funny prize at the end of the game.
Kick Arse Guide For A Kick Arse Game (yes arse not ass)........2003-12-02
This is the single greatest guide for a game. I had already finished the best game in the world, twice, before i bought the book. I have to say, "thankyou Tim Bogenn for writing a Arse Guide For A Kick Arse Game" Must go and play Vice City.
Great book
A must to complete the game..........2003-06-15
If you want to complete Vice City with 100% completion, you need to get a copy of this book. Sure, you can find the same information online, but it is much easier to use this convenient manual which gives you the locations and information you need to finish the game. Some of the information in the book could have been expressed more clearly, but it is still a great companion to the game. Recommended!
Book Description
The first book-length account of the initial phase of Operation NORDWIND, the last German offensive on the Western Front in World War II, Seven Days in January is also a personal memoir by a key participant. For perspective, the author includes a detailed, yet concise, summary of his division's operations during three years of combat against the Soviets on the Arctic Front near Murmansk, and its epic 1,000-mile fighting withdrawal across Finland and Norway after the Finns concluded a separate armistice with the USSR in 1944. With this as background, the author focuses on a day-by-day description and analysis of Operation NORDWIND, based on not only his personal experience in the campaign, but on extensive use of both German and American archival sources and dozens of interviews with the combatants of both sides. A gripping and detailed account of an important, yet until now obscure unit's participation in the last critical contest on the Western Front in WWII. Includes 36 highly-detailed maps, including eight textured 3-D maps derived from satellite imagery to facilitate the reader's fullest possible understanding of the terrain's effects on operations. 6" x 9" format; photos; index.
Customer Reviews:
Well Researched and Written History by Participant in Operation Nordwind.......2007-06-06
At the tender age of 22, the author was the senior staff officer and second in command of the 3d Battalion, SS-Mountain Infantry Regiment 12, 6th SS-Mountain Division NORD. This book is his story.
It begins with an amazing account of how he was captured hiding in a foxhole with two American soldiers that he declared were his prisoners of war. One of the soldiers in the foxhole had shot at the author, hitting him from about 30 meters away. The author instinctively charged right at the foxhole. The surprised soldier got off one more round before the author jumped in the foxhole, hit the soldier on the head with his fist, and declared him to be his prisoner as he unbuckled his pistol. He then discovered that there was yet another soldier in the foxhole who had slept through all this. The author declared him to be his prisoner too. The author was eventually captured when a GI sergeant became upset that one of the men would not leave the foxhole and grabbed the soldier's blanket, uncovering the author as well.
The author then recounts in a very absorbing way his introduction to life as a German soldier where he became a member of the division of German mountain troops that eventually (in 1943, when Waffen-SS Divisions were officially numbered, based on seniority) became the sixth Waffen-SS division, the 6th SS-Mountain Division NORD. In so doing, he also provides a fascinating history of the training, experience, and development of this division, which, after an inauspicious beginning, obtained a well-deserved reputation for being a skilled and respected fighting force. This division spent almost the entire war fighting in the rugged, mountainous terrain of Finland with the Finns against the Soviets until the Finns and Soviets achieved an rapprochement, part of which included that the Finns capture, disarm, and turn over to the Soviets any German soldiers left in Finland after a 10-day allowance for their withdrawal. (The German wihdrawal was designated Operation BIRKE ("Birch").)
After the division's withdrawal from Finland, at the end of 1944, the Germans decided to utilize it (as well as other troops) in Operation NORDWIND ("Northwind"), an adjunct to Operation WACHT AM RHEIN ("Watch on the Rhein"), the offensive launched in Decermber 1944 through the Ardennes forest, better known in the West as the Battle of the Bulge.
The vast majority of the book describes in great detail, not only day by day, but hour by hour, the 7 days of fighting by the author's battalion and other elements of the 6th SS Division ("Combat Group Wingen") in January 1945 in and around the mountain town of Wingen-sur-Moder, in the Low Vosges in Northeastern France, primarily against forces of the U.S. 70th Infantry Division.
Drawing upon a wide array of sources from both sides of the battle, American and German, including numerous personal recollections by participants on both sides, the author not only describes what happened in an engaging writing style but objectively analyzes and criticizes the strategies and tactics of each side, giving credit where credit is due, during each stage of the fighting. The book is an invaluable addition to the history of this battle, mountain fighting, World War II, and warfare in general.
The entire book is enhanced by the use of about 3 dozen well-drawn and clearly stated maps of the fighting in Finland, the withdrawal, and Operation NORDWIND, including the daily battles around Winger-sur-Moden. There are no photos to speak of (the cover photo is not that of the author).
Excellent Account of Operation NORDWIND.......2007-04-22
The author was the adjutant of a German SS mountain infantry battalion that successfully infiltrated through the mountains and American lines before seizing its objective, a small village where most of these highly trained and well led soldiers were surrounded and killed in action while awaiting a relief force to link up with them that never came. The combat performance of this superb unit, and its strict adherence to the rules that govern modern warfare, so impressed their American opponents that both sides routinely met at annual reunions after the war. Parts of the book read like poetry, particularly the all too brief description of the German retreat across Finland and into Norway where the soldiers embarked on rusty transport ships that would transport these doomed soldiers to the shrinking perimeter of the Thousand Year Reich where they would be sacrificed on the fields of Mars during the last operational level German counteroffensive in the west.
Reads like an after action report.......2007-02-26
Yes, it is a great commentary on a unit as it progressed through WW2 and a particular action. However if you were looking for a more personal account of Wolf's experiences you will be disappointed. As my title states it reads like an after action report, NOT A NOVEL, not engrossing, just the facts, I found it pretty dry in fact. What is of great value is the dissection of the problems and how they contributed to the failure of the SS-Mountain to prevail against the US forces. "Those that don't read history are doomed to repeat it". If this is what you are looking for then you will not be disappointed. I give it five stars in that regard.
Credit where credit is due.......2006-03-04
It would take a German to give credit where credit is due.
Nordwind was a German offensive made at the same time as the more famous Ardennes offensive. It was of a slightly smaller scale, but no less fiercly fought and could potentially have had devastating consequences had it succeeeded.
Wolf Zoepf was a veteran from the war with Soviet Union north of the Arctic cirlce and gives a clear and concise description of the development of the Sixth Waffen SS Mountain Division, of its tactics and organisation, and of its heroic part in the failed Nordwind offensive.
The book not only describes in detail the course of the battle, but also - which is even more important - the strengths and weaknesses of the opposing military organisations.
It is not enough to say that the US army had superior manpower and superior firepower - history is full of examples where the inferior side carries the day, take for example the early German and Japanese victories in the second world war, or the Macedonian victories against the Persians.
The German strengths lay in superior tacical skill, initiative, off-road mobility, and tactical organisation (up to, say, regimental level). Usually, these factors would be enough to carry the day in any battle, but the US army had a superior organisation on the army level: not only did they have the manpower and the firepower, they could see to it that it got where it was needed! What played a role was also the superior US communications technology, and that they had one sole Commander who knew how to utilise his advantages and whose orders were obeyed. I get the impression that by this stage of the war the US army had developed a military organisation that was almost fool-proof; even mediocre army or divisional commanders could succeed by just following the rules. The German commander had to co-operate with other army commanders, including Himmler! and had cope with meddling superiors, including Hitler! He could not give orders to other units than the ones under his direct command, and then the communications were often so faulty that orders were not always received.
This book gives the reader so much more than just a first-hand account of the battle (which is interesting enough), and it is a valuable addition to any second world war or military history collection.
Let us not forget that the blood on the snow and the unmarked graves are no less real just becuase they are written on paper and happened over sixty years ago. This kind of madness continues, and shows no will to stop.
Great World War 2 History.......2005-09-29
This is a great history of the 6th SS-Mountain Division. I enjoyed the play by play of Operation NORDWIND and the research that was put in to getting the facts of the battle right. Read Black Edelweiss: A Memoir of Combat and Conscience by a Soldier of the Waffen-SS first to get a really good look at what is was like fighting in Finland and in Operation NORDWIND. They compliment themselves very well.
Book Description
This book offers a blueprint for a world now lost, focusing on such crucial issues as the role of politics and religion, and how communities developed social hierarchies.
Customer Reviews:
wow.......2007-09-05
This book had a great deal of information in it about pre-industrial societies. BUT, it was worded in a way that made it incredibly boring and hard to read.
Yes, if you can read only one book, read this one........2004-12-06
I agree with the reader below. So I would only add some more recommendations to read: "The world economy. A millennial perspective" by Angus Maddison; "Power and privilege: A theory of social stratification" by Gerhard Emmanuel Lenski; "The History of Government" by S.E. Finer; "World History. A new perspective" by Clive Ponting; and "The Phenomenon of Religion", by Moojan Momen.

Titles that pose rhetorical questions are generally attached to books that answer them affirmatively; Has Feminism Changed Science? is no exception. In the professional culture of science, Londa Schiebinger argues, the feminist perspective has profoundly affected both the types of questions being asked and the substance of new theories proposed as answers. Schiebinger, who has explored this territory in previous books (including Nature's Body), focuses on deconstructing the types of science women have been drawn to for careers and the obstacles they've faced inside and outside the laboratory. Balancing the roles of wife, mother, or domestic partner with the demands of a rigorous professional discipline can be career threatening; finding acceptance within the traditionally male culture of science and changing it to reflect new paradigms challenges even the most gifted researchers and teachers. Schiebinger breathes new life into a much-discussed subject, buttressing her arguments with a wealth of statistical analysis that makes her conclusions difficult to refute. Ultimately, she writes, the role of gender in scientific thinking has been forever altered by feminism, just as the role of women in the sciences has. From fetal development and drug testing to the way that archeologists look at primitive tools, the elimination of masculine bias has profoundly reshaped just how science views the world. --Patrizia DiLucchio
Book Description
Do women do science differently? And how about feminists--male or female? The answer to this fraught question, carefully set out in this provocative book, will startle and enlighten every faction in the "science wars."
Has Feminism Changed Science? is at once a history of women in science and a frank assessment of the role of gender in shaping scientific knowledge. Science is both a profession and a body of knowledge, and Londa Schiebinger looks at how women have fared and performed in both instances. She first considers the lives of women scientists, past and present: How many are there? What sciences do they choose--or have chosen for them? Is the professional culture of science gendered? And is there something uniquely feminine about the science women do? Schiebinger debunks the myth that women scientists--because they are women--are somehow more holistic and integrative and create more cooperative scientific communities. At the same time, she details the considerable practical difficulties that beset women in science, where domestic partnerships, children, and other demanding concerns can put women's (and increasingly men's) careers at risk.
But what about the content of science, the heart of Schiebinger's subject? Have feminist perspectives brought any positive changes to scientific knowledge? Schiebinger provides a subtle and nuanced gender analysis of the physical sciences, medicine, archaeology, evolutionary biology, primatology, and developmental biology. She also shows that feminist scientists have developed new theories, asked new questions, and opened new fields in many of these areas.

Not the scary post-modernism monster you might think.......2002-11-25
"Has Feminism Changed Science?" I think the first response to this question is How could it, followed by Why should it? Doesn't this resemble the sort of postmodernist chatter about science that led to the Alan Sokal hoax? Londa Schiebinger's book is not the most interesting in the world, which could raise inaccurate fears that it is cursed with academic jargon. However, her work is valuable in it shows that in fact feminism does have something valuable to say about the development of science. Schiebinger starts off by stating that she does not particularly believe in difference feminism. Nor does she support the idea that stereotypically feminine qualities can provide insights that are unavailable to mere mortal men. She also wisely points out that "It is not obvious that gender has a stronger influence on science than do other political and cultural divides in North American society, such as class or ethnicity." She then starts off with a history of women in science, working on her previous book "The Mind Has No Sex?" and about the somewhat unpleasant consequences of the Enlightenment in the spread of female scientists. The next chapter looks at differences and possible discrimination against women scientists, the possibility of women's indigenous knowledge (mostly in agriculture), and a nuanced and somewhat inconclusive account of publication records and citation counts.
The, more interesting, remainder of the book can be divided into two sections: features of the culture of science that unfairly hamper women, and aspects of science that could be improved by looking at gender questions. Schiebinger starts off with how children's toys at a very early age reinforce gender stereotypes, as well as educational software that emphasizes wargame elements more attractive to boys. She discusses widespread images of scientists that assume that they are male. She includes a rather pompous comment by James Watson about his colleague Rosalind Franklin whom he belittled for not being attractive, as well as the fact that F.A. Hayek excluded women from his intellectual salon. She points out that images of science have not always been masculine, while the stereotype of competitive men and cooperative women in reversed in Japan--without improving the status of women. Schiebinger discusses such facts as tone of voice, problems in raising families, the culture of modesty, personal space, as well as one geologist who found herself invited by her department to attend the showing of Sports Illustrated swimsuit video, and being criticized when she demurred.
Schiebinger then goes on to study specific studies. She points how many studies in medicine ignored women, such as a 1982 study looking at aspirin and heart disease that studied 22,071 men and 0 women. She also discusses issues in primatology and how female scientists have challenged the masculine assumptions about masculine baboon life. She points out, for instance, that we have no proof that the famed fossil "Lucy" was a woman. It was assumed that "she" was because she was small, and supposedly because her pelvis was large enough to permit the birth of larger-brained infants. Except that a) larger-brained infants didn't arise for a million or more years and b) her pelvis was not in fact large. Feminist archaeologists have pointed out that others have incorrectly assumed that tools were owned by men, and that the tools that survive were the most important in human evolution. In looking at biology she points out the problem that gendered metaphors can produce. Starting from Linnaeus' ideas of marriage in flowers, she points out why much discussion of bacterial sex is misleading (there is sexual reproduction but comparing it to our male and female genders is most unhelpful) and why walruses and stallions do not really keep "harems" of women. Finally, in looking at physics and math, she discusses how although SAT scores give men an advantage in math, if one increased the algebra questions and reduced the geometry ones, the gap would be equal. She also points out that IQ tests have been rejigged in the past when women were doing better on them. Overall, Schiebinger reminds us of a central fact of the Kuhnian revolution in the history of science. Science is our best way of learning the truth about ourselves and the world around us, but objectivity is a lot more difficult than it looks.
An extraordinary document of women in science.......2000-01-19
The book is one of the best I ever read on the subject of feminism in science. Through history and detailed references Schiebinger analyzes the progress (and the lack of in certain fields) towards a true genderless science. The lack of women in science is viewed as a reflection of not only discrimination, but also social issues, which are rarely addressed. Some of which include primary and secondary education, child rearing and values and equality between spouses at home. The book is a must for anyone interested in the topic!
The answer is, at best, "maybe"........1999-07-24
The author has a great topic and a great question, and does a wonderful job of not providing any straightforward substantiation for her assertions. Part ofd the problem is perhaps that "Has feminism changed science?" is not the question Schiebinger seems to be asking so much as "have *women* changed science?" By Jove, they have. But is this a new story? Save your $27.95 for later... this book offers little that is edifying or even interesting.
Outstanding review of the barriers in science.......1999-07-14
This book is an outstanding review of women in science, the barriers they face and the unique contributions they make. The organization of the text by history, culture, and substance provides the opportunity to look at each of these separately. Schiebinger's documentation and use of contrasting views lends much credibility to her arguments.
This is a wonderful book that challenges our assumptions........1999-06-16
This is a wonderful book that challenges our assumptions as they pertain to science and the workers within science. Schiebinger doesn't define the world as she sees it, rather she utilizes historical, social, and technical patterns to reflect upon the poor success of women in science.

Book Description
Beginning in the 1940’s with Hollywood’s image of the American woman, this book goes on to discuss the images of home, family, and domesticity in the 1950’s and the impact of Betty Friedan’s The Feminist Mystique on the 1960s generation. Next, it examines the 1970’s, the so-called golden age of American feminism, including sexual politics and reactionary rhetoric about lesbians and women who didn’t follow the party line. Antifeminist cultural discourses on women’s rights, including Susan Faludi’s Backlash, are discussed in relation to abortion, equal pay for equal work, and other political, social, and cultural issues. The book assesses the highly charged sexual politics of the 1990’s using the writings of Camille Paglia, Naomi Wolf, and Katie Roiphe to analyze different levels of post-feminism. With examples from the mass media, film, literature, popular culture, art criticism, this book surveys the impact of the American feminist movement, how it originated, why certain ideas and images had to change, and how this movement shaped our notions of feminine and masculine over the last fifty years. A Feminist Critique is a fair and much-needed overview of the accomplishments, issues, and goals of the feminist movement and its future course.
