Arguing that we have largely inadequate financial markets, dealing with relatively small risks, Robert Shiller makes a unique set of proposals for marketizing the biggest economic risks faced by society today, risks that really matter to most people. The new markets could diminish the impact
of international economic fluctuations and reduce the inequality of wealth. He proposes new international markets for claims on national incomes, on components and aggregates of national incomes, and for property such as real estate, and argues that these markets might dwarf our stock markets in
their activity and significance. He challenges the widespread presumption that any such new market would be infeasible, by offering solutions to technical problems of measurement and settlement. There are proposals for implementing markets in perpetual claims and a substantial section on the
construction of index numbers for use in settlement in the new markets.

It's unlikely that you've ever sat in your chair thinking, "You know, what the world REALLY needs is a tongue-in-cheek collection of classic literature as rewritten from a modern, slightly New Age-y, pro-female perspective." But darn it, the writing in Frankly Scarlett, I Do Give a Damn! is good, and these days that quality alone is enough to merit buying it.
From Beverly West and Nancy Peske's version of Wuthering Heights: "What should have been a naturally unfolding, free exchange between equals dedicated to plumbing the depths of their sensual natures was thwarted by a misunderstanding borne of the rigid social mores of the time, which did not value strong-headed heroines with a capacity for multiple orgasms ... 'Oh, Nelly, what should I do? It is Heathcliff I love. It is Heathcliff who knows where my G-spot is.'" You get the picture. Frankly Scarlett is a nice little book--it's not too ambitious, but is adeptly done. Maybe if you buy it, the authors will push themselves a little more next time.

With all the politically correct retellings of classic tales flying around the book market these days I'm surprised there hasn't been one of these sooner. But now its here and its great. Some of the stories are better that others, Wuthering Heights, The Scarlet Letter and Gone With the Wing are the best but they're all amusing & entertaining. I only hope the authors will honor us with some more, maybe Antony & Cleopatra, Guinevere & Lancelot, Daphne & Apollo.
the classic romance meets the enlightened male--hilarious!.......1997-06-22
Ever thought that Rhett was slightly obtuse about Scarlett's struggle against the patriarchy? (Of course, Scarlett was pretty clueless about Ashley's unresolved boundary issues). That Heathcliff might have worked out a healthier way of dealing with angerÐand CatherineÐthan storming across the moors? That Sam's penchant for immortal one-liners (in Casablanca) was avoidance behavior? That Gatsby's deep-seated fear of intimacy was a dick thing and that he and Daisy would be happier in a third-floor walk-up in Greenwich Village?
Me neither. I swallowed the heroine-trashing endings of all these literary classics without a backwards glance. But I like the ones in Frankly Scarlett, I Don't Give A Damn a whole lot better. They give the classics a whole new twist, never take themselves seriously, and are absolutely hilarious.

This offers the commited Juggalo no real insight into ICP it is a mish mash of stuff and snippets gleaned from the definative book behind the paint by Violent J.Do yourself a favour dont get mugged read up on ICP on their website or another fansite and buy the proper book this is nothing new and definatley not fantastic but dull and pedestrian.

If the above was written today, it would be referring instead to The Television Companion: The Unofficial and Unauthorized Guide to Doctor Who by David J. Howe and Stephen James Walker (also available from Amazon, but your best bet is to order from the Amazon UK site as it doesn't seem to be available from here as
yet-02 Dec 2003). The Television Companion is the result of exhaustive research and contains a great deal more information and opinion about the series than this book does.
If you're after a by-the-numbers episode guide then you'll be content with this book. However, I strongly urge you to look into purchasing The Television Companion instead if you want a book that gives in-depth coverage of each story.

This is the revised Programme that replaces the earlier, incomplete 1983 model. A very handy guide to all 27 years of one of the best (if not the best) SF TV show. A must have for all dedicated Who fans.
Now very out of date.......2001-05-29
This is the original program guide, written while the series was still in production. Some small errors, and only good up to the 20th season. I bought mine almost new, so rereading fills me with bitter nostalgia, knowing that the show had only a few years to go.

This book is very well put together. It has a lot if information that I think is accurate. The information is put together in a logical manner and the illustrations are very helpful and actually do their job. This is a history book, so if that is what you're looking for I would highly recommend it.

Laconic, lucid descriptions enhanced by excellent, relevant illustrations, diagrams and battle maps. The style is reminiscent of modern military training manuals - always brief and to the point. The reasons for success or failure are examined dispassionately and changes in the balance of power over time are effectively explained. A vast amount of well researched information presented in a book that is a pleasure to read.
Loads of Useful Information.......2007-02-16
This book served my purposes well in the writing of "Maccabee." Significant detail is given, citing ancient sources such as Livy and Plutarch, in relating what occurred in historic battles and the weaponry that was used. Minute details are given, such as the way a pilum was built so the iron shaft would bend once thrust into an enemy shield so it could not be extracted, thus rendering the shield useless. This book demonstrates that though the weaponry was nothing so sophisticated as the weapons of today, much thought went into how best to wage war. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in ancient warfare.

This is perhaps the second or third best book based on ancient warfare I have ever seen (behind Adrian Goldsworthy's "The Complete Roman Army"). Great details and pictures, you will be lucky to get your hands on this one. Intriguing all the way through, and great for reference.

totally superficial review based on the hardcover edition. big, large cover, looks like a textbook not a critical history, i have no interest in going to the library and spreading this textbook out on a large table and digging in. textbook presentation of the volume does not appeal to the way i like to use most books. material looked interesting, but also presented in a topic by topic textbook fashion. i sent it back
