Book Description
This two-volume set aims to present as completely as possible the methods of statistical inference with special reference to their economic applications. The reader will find a description not only of the classical concepts and results of mathematical statistics, but also of concepts and methods recently developed for the specific needs of econometrics. The authors have sought to avoid an overly technical presentation and go to some lengths to encourage an intuitive understanding of the results by providing numerous examples throughout. The breadth of approaches and the extensive coverage of the two volumes provide for a thorough and entirely self-contained course in modern econometrics. Volume 1 provides an introduction to general concepts and methods in statistics and econometrics, and goes on to cover estimation and prediction. Volume 2 focuses on testing, confidence regions, model selection, and asymptotic theory.
Customer Reviews:
Theoretically rigorous and useful.......2005-01-23
Gourieroux & Monfort's (translated) 2-volume set has beautiful theory but at the same time lends itself to applications. The theory is intuitive, rigorous and fun to read. It also makes the connection between the theory and application understandable and meaningful (something that other books, e.g., Casella & Berger, fail to do). Highly recommended.

Book Description
The declining U.S. national saving rate has prompted economists and policymakers to ask, should the federal government encourage household saving, and if so, through which policies? In order to better understand saving programs, this volume provides a systematic and detailed description of saving policies in the G-7 industrialized nations: the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom.
Each of the seven chapters focuses on one country and addresses a core set of topics: types of accumulated household savings and debt; tax policies toward capital income; saving in the form of public and private pensions, including Social Security and similar programs; saving programs that receive special tax treatment; and saving through insurance.
This detailed summary of the saving incentives of the G-7 nations will be an invaluable reference for policymakers and academics interested in personal saving behavior.

Book Description
The Battle of Britain and the Blitz is published in conjunction with the Imperial War Museum: Voices from the Twentieth Century. Using eyewitness accounts, The Battle of Britain and the Blitz relives desperate times in the words of pilots, ground crew and other airmen and women, firefighters, air-raid wardens, radar operators, land girls, evacuees and many others. The book is accompanied by a unique 1 hour audio CD, featuring, in their own words and voices, the actual reminiscences of many of these eyewitnesses, taken from the magnificent Sound Archive of Britain's national museum of conflict The Imperial War Museum. The CD, which contains material not found in the book, is further enhanced by the use of actual recordings of aircraft engines, gunfire and other sound effects, as well as songs from the period. The result is a remarakble work that vividly brings to life the months that saw Britain defined for all time as a country whose people's spirit was, literally, unbreakable.
Book Description
In the 1970s, John Denver was America’s biggest-selling solo star, a singer whose crossover appeal drew millions of fans from the worlds of folk, pop, and country music. Beneath the tranquil surface of his music and his clear tenor voice, however, lurked a darker side to Denver’s character. The wholesome figure who cavorted with the Muppets was a troubled alcoholic. Delving into the singer’s past, John Collis found a man who was considerably more complex than the placid surface of his music might suggest. And, in looking at Denver’s career, Collis assesses his contribution not only to the world of music, but to the culture of which he was both a protagonist and a victim.
Customer Reviews:
Useless and self-absorbed.......2007-10-04
It is clear that this author wasn't all that interested in John Denver, with so many meaningless tangents and so little new information. He doesn't add to our knowledge or insights about John Denver, and his treatment of John's personal life was superficial and indicated no research with people who actually knew him. His "analysis" of John's psychological state was speculative and lazy. You could find everything he had to say on a web site somewhere. And his snarky musical criticism was just irritating. Don't waste your money.
Unsubstantiated Account.......2006-02-16
This book has no basis for the items presented as facts. Obviously, not a song critic; the author shows no appreciation at all for the lyrics and verse that captured, and still captures the world. The accounts of John Denver's personality were also written as fact instead of the farce that it is. Members of his family, children and ex-wives; continue to praise on camera-his gentleness and giving. This is not the book to read if you want insight into a man who gave the world his genius and his hope for a better world in the only way he knew to share this hope. He was, however, a man and problems he had with alcohol and relationships are outlined in his autobiography...and not very different from the evils many people face from day to day.
Don't waste your time with this book!.......2004-06-04
If I could have given this book a negative number, I would have. The 190-page book could have been cut in half; only that much is actually about John Denver. Collis leads the reader to believe the book is a biography about Denver, when in fact he jumps between issues and events surrounding Denver's life. He accuses him of being a "wife-beater", and does give an example, albeit one brief example towards the back of his book. Collis is more interested in telling us about his favorite music stars of the time than giving any information about the artist the book proclaims to be about.
As someone said before, if you want to know about Denver, read his autobiography "Take Me Home", rather than wasting your precious time and money on Collis' biography. There's also a movie that made a better impression on me than this attempt to describe Denver's life, "Take Me Home: The John Denver Story". Don't make the same mistake I did by reading this.
A Cut & Paste Job.......2004-01-11
Readers, if you want to learn something about John Denver's life or his place in music history, don't waste your time with this book. I have serious doubts about the "facts" Collis presents, considering that within the first 62 pages Collis informs us that:
* the distance from Ft. Worth to El Paso is "the best part of 1,500 miles" (p. 42)--which will come as quite a surprise to most Texans, who think the true distance is less than half that
*Texas Tech is in Austin (p. 42)--what a shock to the TTU students who've been attending classes in Lubbock since 1925
*Don Kirshner "formed his Monkees by selecting. . .Mickey 'Circus Boy' Dolenz and Davy Jones. . . [and] Peter Tork, an enthusiastic mimer of the bass guitar" (p. 62)--Don Kirshner didn't "form" the Monkees; Bert Schneider and Bob Rafelson did. Kirshner was brought in as musical supervisor after Micky (spelled without an "e"), Davy, Peter and Mike were hired (see p. 31 of Glenn Baker's _Monkeemania_). And by the way, Peter is a consumate musician who plays 10 instruments, including bass.
Each of these facts would have been very easy to check. Collis didn't bother, which provokes doubts about the accuracy of anything else he writes in _Mother Nature's Son_.
Nor is there evidence of original research; Collis' sources, when he troubles himself to credit them, are magazine interviews and clips from John Denver's autobiography. This book is a clip job. Read the original sources, especially John's _Take Me Home_, to get the facts in context.
Difficult to read.......2001-11-21
This book is difficult to read; the writing style, often compared to a term paper is somewhat accurate. He is not completely accurate in statements and I often wondered if research was actually done for this book or if he mainly gleaned stories from rag magazines and decided to consider them as factual pieces of information to pass along.
Please read John's autobiography first before looking to other forms of information on John's life; John is brutally honest about himself, both good and bad, and his book reads as a truly factual account of his life (better yet, read the book and get the recorded copy read by John to get the true feelings that he had about his life, family & himself).
Collis' book reads and feels fake for the most part, and although this man clearly is NOT a John Denver fan, you don't really have to be to be aware of all that John had accomplished in his life. The next book I buy and read about John will have to be written by best friends and/or family members before I'm willing to trust content. This one for me was not on the mark because both of what I know factually and instinctively. This one is NOT going on my book shelf as a keeper, that's for sure.

Book Description
We live in an age in which text is gradually losing ground to the image. People read less and spend ever more time in front of the computer screen or the TV. Events and personal lives are no longer only documented in reports, letters, or diaries, but also with digital cameras and video recorders. The fast-moving images of MTV continue to exercise increasing influence on youth culture. Images obviously have a certain directness, accessiblity, and attraction that puts them at an advantage in the competition to grab the audience's attention. To stimulate an exchange of ideas about this contemporary situation, six writers, scholars, and experts were invited to devote an essay to the problems and potential of visual culture, examining questions of digitization, reproduction and authorship, the influence on our historic consciousness, and the impact on expressive traditions. Published in conjunction with The National Institute for Photography in the Netherlands.

While Gentry's book has useful information it lacks some very basic information which is essential for the new user of WebTV. How about pictures of a keyboard and a remote indicating the function of all keys other than letters. For instance, wouldn't it be nice were there a discussion of the "option" button and what appears on the screen when the button is depressed.

Customer Reviews:
Good hands on practice!.......2006-11-30
What I like best about this book (I only have the 1st edition) is that there are practice exercises and analysis at the end of each chapter. For example, the book will ask you to create some scripts to do a certain task. Or, the questions will show you some scripts and ask you want you need to modify to make it work a certain way. The answers and explanations are in the back of the book in case you get stumped or want to check your answers. Going hands-on is the BEST way to learn scripting and programming!
I found the reading easy to absorb, but I do have a little background in BASIC and Visual Basic programming so it definitely helps. I think a completely new user to the Unix/Linux world would benefit from this book.
Good to have.......2005-05-29
I have not used shell scripting in the long time. I ordered this book and it helps me refresh a lot about Unix and shell scripting leanrt in school many years ago as undergraduate student. The book is well-written and will keep you excited. One important thing is: practice as you are reading. By the time you finish the book you should be able to grab much from the book. I downloaded the Sun Solaris 9 that I installed on x86 computer and I am playing with some flavors of shell writing small shell scripts.
Great Intro Book for Real Beginners.......2005-05-02
I came from purely Windows environment and I know nothing about UNIX or Linux except a few C commands many years ago. I tried a few books like shell scripting, learning the shell and by example, but I gave up as their speed was too fast for a beginner like me. Only after a few intro pages, these books started to write complex commands which I was confused and unable to continue. The worst thing is, most of them don't explain in details what those commands do and expect readers to know. This book does not assume you know basic UNIX commands, and it covers the basics in first section. It has short chapters and each of them tries to teach you the basic concepts in one area with simple examples. This is the book that gives you confidence to move on and it does not try to feed you with too much knowledge at a time. After reading this book, you are equipped with basic idea of what shell scripting is and able to move on with advanced books. A very good step-by-step book for beginners who know very little or nothing about UNIX shell programming.
The power of the shell!.......2005-01-06
Becoming thouroghly proficent in various shells and being able to write shell scripts whether simple or of vast complexity is a fundemental requirement for becoming *NIX savvy. Whatever your flavor, Linux, OpenBSD, Solaris - you must know shell scripting to be taken seriously.
The title of this book, "Teach Yourself Shell Programming in 24 Hours" is no joke. Even if you know nothing of this subject, a couple passes through this book will bring you all the way up to a moderate and respectable level of proficency. While this book only covers a tiny part of a massive skill, you will leave this book with the confidence and the ability to learn more and more without the help of another book. Of course, there are more advanced books out there, and it can't hurt to look, but I STRONGLY reccomend starting here.
Great! Better than the 6 Sams books i've already read........2003-11-05
Very helpful book. I first tried using unix a year ago, it seemed really hard. Now after i read this book i understand how to use most of the commands in the shell terminal even though im only 12 years old! Really.
P.S. : No, I am not a nerd.

Customer Reviews:
amazing.......2007-09-11
What a great and interesting unknown ( to many of us ) part of WW2.
I fascinated by the BSE story, and the fact of being headquartered in New York. This is a must for the history or intelligence student. What a creative and intelligent mind, Sir William from being a canadian teen, WW1 trench fighter, WW1 fighter pilot, becoming a millionaire in the 20's and did not hesitate to use his life and fortune to fight evil, nazi Germany and comunist Russia.
His creation, the British Security Coordination, led to the CIA and one of his staff members, a Royal Navy officer named Ian Fleming, wrote all the scripts for James Bond 007. The beautyful female agents in 007 can be traced back to Cynthia, code name for a super sexy BSE agent.
Just read the book, I enjoyed page by page, and paid my respect to the Room 3603 at the Rockfeller Center, the former headquarter of BSE and Sir William.
THE REAL JAMES BOND.......2007-05-13
The book is a real page turner and it's a true history. The fact that the book has been in print since 1976 tells a lot.
Gripping Spy History, but read skeptically.......2007-01-04
This gripping narrative describes the British (and Allied) secret service and its activities during World War primarily in the days before Pearl Harbor. Canadian-born William Stephenson (1897-1989) was INTREPID, one of the great spy-masters of all time. Stephenson shows readers how British agents engaged in many vital fronts, including attempts to influence U.S. policy and public opinion prior to Pearl Harbor. Readers see that Nazi agents were also at work in the USA and elsewhere at similar activities. Stephenson describes the doings of appeasers like Joe Kennedy (father of JFK) and Charles Lindbergh, and claims that President Roosevelt knew about Pearl Harbor in advance - a debatable claim, although most historians agree that by December 1941 Roosevelt expected Japan to attack U.S. (plus British and Dutch) interests in the Far East.
This compelling 1976 book left me wondering about some of the author's claims and if Stephenson might occasionally have mixed fact with opinion. For these reason I rated the book at just four stars. Still, Stephenson reportedly advised Roosevelt on the OSS (fore-runner of the CIA), and he was a trusted confidant of Winston Churchill - upon recommending Stephenson for knighthood the Old Lion wrote, "This one is dear to my heart."
Interesting but sketchy.......2006-08-17
Perhaps the very nature of the subject results in a history that is sketchy. It has many fascinating chapters that fill in the gaps of other WWII histories, and person who is well read in WWII histories will find this an important title for the collection. But reading this without a good WWII background may be misleading.
The author makes numerous statements that are not backed up with facts. For example, in a reference to a daring theft of Vichy French naval ciphers, the author claims that without these ciphers the North Africa landings in 1942 [Torch] wouldn't have been possible. Really?
Another example is the Dieppe landings. We're lead to believe that there were a number of spin-off missions from the "failed" Dieppe invasion in 1942, including the rescue of 19 French secret agents locked up in the landing area, and investigating German radar capabilities. But the author never convinces me that these were worth the cost of over 5,000 men lost in the battle.
I think Stevenson gives the reader the impression that secret ops were responsible for preventing the Nazis from building atomic weapons. From other books I have read on the subject, Hitler had little interest in devoting the resources required for this project. The German scientists had pursued the wrong path early in the war and never got back on the correct path. If BSC had done nothing in this field, the Germans would still not have built an atomic bomb before the war ended. Of course the Allies didn't know this and I don't fault them for making the effort to disrupt German atomic research, but it was really just overkill.
I found the first half of the book much more intersting, especially where the author reveals the treachery of the appeasers and Nazi sympathizers like Joe Kennedy and Charles Lindbergh. I take issue with the previous reviewer (Rob "Coolerking") in his comparison of today's 'War against Terror" with WWII. The Bush administration has created a negative environment in the American intelligence community where the operatives are only listened to if they provide information that supports the Administrations goals or beliefs. Anything contrary is ignored. In the case of the Valerie Plame case, when she gave contrary evidence to the case Bush was making for attacking Iraq, she was exposed. This abuse of intelligence is not what intrepid had in mind. In fact, he speaks about this very issue in his forward when he writes, "So there is the conundrum: How can we wield the weapons of secrecy wihout doing damage to ourselves? How can we preserve the secrecy without endangering constitutional law and the individual guarantees of freedom?"
I recommend this book for WWII buffs, but having a broad background on the subject is a perequisite.
This book is ageless.......2005-07-25
How can a book about WW1 written in 1976 be so alive today? I never knew there were such brave Brits, Americans and Canadians working together to save our countries from terror. If not for them, we might all be speaking German right now. This book shows FDR as I and many never knew him. How timeless this book is as We still have brave men working and fighting for us. But how scary (as in those years before and during the war) that there remains that 5th column A great book for anyone who likes history and wants to be informed of the behind-the- scenes happenings. It also tells about so many well knowns that were either heros or part of that 5th column. I highly recommend this book. An eye opener.

The Chosen: The Hidden History of Admission and Exclusion at Harvard, Yale, and Princeton
ASIN: 0300084684 |
Book Description
This unique and richly informative addition to American educational, religious, and cultural history examines the college life of Jews at Yale from the first Jewish graduate in 1809 to the present time, drawing comparisons to the Jewish experience at other elite colleges and universities and to the experiences of other minorities at Yale. In this revised edition, Oren draws on new interviews and references to present the dramatic events of the past twenty years, describing the tensions between majority and minority cultures in an academic world increasingly committed to inclusiveness and the solidification of meritocracy.
Book Description
Rischin paints a vivid picture of Jewish life in New York at the turn of the century. Here are the old neighborhoods and crowded tenements, the Rester Street markets, the sweatshops, the birth of Yiddish theatre in America, and the founding of important Jewish newspapers and labor movements. The book describes, too, the city's response to this great influx of immigrants--a response that marked the beginning of a new concept of social responsibility.

Near Field Microscopy and Near Field Optics
ASIN: 0471043117 |
Book Description
A complete guide to one of the most revolutionary technologies in the history of imaging
Near-field microscopes combine the richness of optical analysis, the noninvasive character of light, and the wide variety of sample environments of conventional microscopes with the finer spatial resolution of alternative technologies. Near-Field Optics combines an introduction to near-field optical theory with a handbook and reference for the practice and application of near-field microscopy. Michael A. Paesler and Patrick J. Moyer provide the most comprehensive presentation available on the instrumentation and operation of near-field microscopes. Writing from the viewpoint of the scientist who wants to apply these revolutionary instruments in a laboratory setting, the authors:
* Explain the pertinent optical theory and provide a developmental history of near-field instruments

Customer Reviews:
Excellent summary of progress to date in near-field optics........1998-01-28
Drs Paesler and Moyer present a comprehensive overview of the research to date in near-field optics, including their own progress in the field. Clearly written and readable passages cover both the theory and applications of near-field microscopy, as well as a primer on the discipline's history. As the field is relatively young but quickly growing, having centralized access to seminal works is a real benefit. Having one of the authors (Moyer) as a graduate advisor, I was able to take first-hand advantage of his expertise in my own near-field research; for those who don't have the luxury of one-on-one interaction with the authors, their book is the next best thing.
