This lift the flap book is fun for my 13 month old grand daughter. I do have to help her be gentle with the flaps so she won't tear them, but she likes to look under the flaps and point out the belly button, eyes, etc.

These are, hands down, our daughter's favorite books. She enjoys them over and over. The illustrations are bright and cute -- highly recommend these books -- especially the lift the flap -- she LOVES them.
Baby's Box of Fun.......2007-05-13
I purchased this book set for my grandson when he was 12 months old. Listening to books is the only time he actually sits still. His favorite book was Toes, Ears, & Nose although he likes all the books because they are interactive. The only problem with the books is if he is left unsupervised or even when holding him, he rips off the flaps in the books. We have had to glue them back on numerous times. I would highly recommend these books but you must be careful with babies that are aggressively interactive with the books.
LOVE! LOVE! LOVE!.......2007-03-28
This item was received as a gift and my 2 yr old loves her lift the flaps books. Her favorite out of this collection is "Where is Mommy". I have also purchased them for my friends children and they love them.
Never received mine, bought from 'oktrbks'.......2007-01-05
I bought this from 'oktrbks' and never received.
Contacted the seller and was asked if I want another copy so I said 'yes'
I have not received this yet. I was waiting for this because I believed the seller will send me an another copy. But now It's been more than 90 days so I can not even get my money back.
Not a big money but doesn't feel good at all about the seller's feedback.
Will see if the seller will contact me about this item or not.
I sent an memo to seller today again.

Book Description
Why are there differences in life expectancies among various demographic groups? Why have these changes in life expectancies occurred? Many reasons are given in the popular and more scholarly literatures.
Causes, Correlates and Consequences of Death Among Older
Adults considers an integrated approach to investigating determinants of and correlates of mortality in the United States - integrating modeling, micro data, and modern econometric techniques. A number of examples of applications are included, with some explorations of the robustness of the results under alternative assumptions. The basic purpose of this text is to increase our knowledge of mortality and to illustrate how such an integrated approach can further our knowledge of mortality and related phenomena.
Book Description
This book is concerned with the long-run effects of budgetary and financial policy on aggregate demand and supply. Here the long run is characterized by the accumulation of public debt and foreign assets. This gives rise to a number of questions. Will the long-run equilibrium be stable? What does long-run instability imply? Is the long-run multiplier smaller than the short-run multiplier? Can the long-run multiplier become negative? This book takes a new approach to macroeconomic policy. It assumes a growing economy, as opposed to a stationary economy. And it assumes that the government fixes the deficit rate, as opposed to the tax rate. It is argued that economic growth is an important factor of long-run stability. Similarly, it is argued that a fixed deficit rate is an important factor of long-run stability.

Book Description
From the Gulf War to Kosovo, the last decade has seen a new found willingness by Western governments to use force to intervene in "distant" humanitarian crises. Central to this new policy is the so-called "CNN effect," the saturation of western viewers with non-stop, real-time news footage from civil wars, which constitute a powerful plea for action. But is the media genuinely influential in shaping foreign policy, or are governments oblivious to partial news coverage.
The CNN Effect examines the relationship between the state and its media, and considers the role played by the CNN effect in a series of "humanitarian" interventions in Iraq, Somalia, Bosnia, Kosovo and Rwanda. Piers Robinson challenges traditional views of media subservience and argues that sympathetic news coverage at key moments in foreign crises can influence the response of western governments. Included is discussion of the US' recent "bread and bombs" tactics in Afghanistan.
Customer Reviews:
This is a joke.......2006-02-07
I wonder how much money Time Warner paid this man to write a book of lies about CNN. All CNN wants is rateings, and they will sell out America to do it.
Common man.......2004-03-23
Piers Robinson has clearly demstrated that he is in touch with the views of the common man, so refreshing to read a theoretical book by a leading academic in his field that is clearly in touch with current thinking. I was pleased to see clear and yet not didactic influence from Chomsky. The book casts no aspersions about the influence Ogonovsky, Winter, Drew et al on the thought process that Robinson has employed in order to reach current conclusions. While Eric Berne describes Transactional Analysis as a humanistic educational psychology, Robinson uses the premise that educational difficulties can be addressed effectively with co-operative goodwill and a coherent theoretical framework which clarifies the human dynamics involved. A fantastic read. Well done Robinson. Good chap

Book Description
Twenty-five military historians from around the world describe the decisive conflicts that shaped history from the fifth century BC to the present.
Cannae and Agincourt, Waterloo and Gettysburg, Stalingrad and Midway, the Tet Offensive
.The latest book in the popular Seventies series assesses the great battles and conflicts in history from the past twenty-five centuries, and discusses the effects they have had on the development of states and civilizations.
Organized chronologically into seven parts, the book encompasses the ancient and medieval worlds as well as the wars of the past hundred years, including the conflict in Iraq. The contributors analyze not just the greatest land battles of all time, but sieges such as Constantinople (1453) and Tenochtitlán (1521); naval battles such as Actium (31 BC), Trafalgar (1805), and Tsushima (1905); and the crucial conflicts in the air during the Battle of Britain (1940) and the American attack on Japan (1945).
The coverage is truly worldwide in scope, from the battle in Teutoburg Forest in AD 9, where the Germans defeated the Romans, to Hakata Bay in 1281, where the Japanese defeated the Mongols, and the first battle of Panipat in 1526, where the Mughals conquered Hindustan. The reader is presented with a masterly overview of advances in military technology, and of the changing tactics and strategy of battlefield commanders from Hannibal to Napoleon, Montgomery, and Eisenhower.
Richly illustrated in color with hundreds of photographs, contemporary paintings, and specially commissioned battle plans and maps, this will be essential reading for anyone interested in military history. 350 illustrations, 230 in color.
Customer Reviews:
not very good.......2007-08-11
This is exactly one of those kinds of books you see in the "bargain" or "discount" section of a large book store, right next to the calendars that are about to become outdated.
The chosen battles aren't described very well (often in just one page), and if the reader doesn't have some foreknowledge of the battle being read about he or she might end up confused rather than more informed.
I don't know why the book's editors decided that there are "seventy" great battles in world history, nor do I know why they've chosen to include months-long campaigns (Battle of Britain) or years-long campaigns (Battle of the Atlantic) right next to the battles that took place in only one day or so. It's confusing. Perhaps if the authors just described the big daylight aerial battles that took place on September 15, 1940 for the Battle of britain, or the chase for the German battleship Bismarck in May 1941 for the Battle of the Atlantic it would have been more in keeping with the spirit of the rest of the book. Trying to call the "American Air Attack on Japan" of 1944-45 or the "Western Front" of 1918 a "battle" in the same sense that the Battle of Trafalgar was a battle is ludicrous. The editors attempt to do too much, and, predictably, make a shoddy job of it. This book doesn't even do a good job of sparking interest in the reader to find more thorough books of greater scholastic merit on the same subjects.
It is boring and superficial on the topics, even more so than a poorly written middle school textbook, and at times the text lacks academic professionalism (example: on page 15, in the introduction, a photograph of an RAF Spitfire is captioned with "... during the Battle of Britain, summer 1940, the Spitfire fighter proved more than a match for the German Messerschmitts." The statement is arguable to begin with, and the corresponding Battle of Britain article on pages 245-249 makes no such bold claim -- stating only that the fighter planes were about equal).
In limiting themselves to only "The" 70 greatest battles of history, the editors curiously leave out some significant battles that at least equal the chosen ones for historical significance and impact on future events. This is made even more obvious since the editors curiously include the aforementioned lengthy campaings in addition to the one-day battles. Also, some of the battles included in this book depend on previous battles or campaigns occuring first, that are more historically significant.
Of interest, some missing battles might include:
Ancient World:
- Thermopylae (heroic and strategically important blocking action against Persian takeover of Athens)
- Zama (removed Carthaginian presence from Southern Europe for good)
- Ceasar's conquest of Gaul (triumph of tactics and logistics)
- Constantine the Great's military campaign against rivals to become Roman Emperor (significantly, shifted power from Rome to Constantinople)
Medieval World:
- First Crusade and capture of Jerusalem
- Charlemagne's campaign to unite the Frankish empire
Sixteenth Century
- Ivan IV ("The Terrible") creates Russian Empire
Nineteenth Centuy:
- Austerlitz (still studied in military academies as a masterwork of strategy)
- Napoleon's campaign of 1812 in Russia (one of the greatest military disasters ever)
- Monitor versus Virginia (revolutionized naval warfare as the first slogging match between armored, steam-powered warships)
- 54th Massachussetts Regiment storming Fort Wagner (first significant action of freed African American regiments in Civil War)
- Charge of the Light Brigade at Bacalava (heralded the end of the massed cavalry charge on the battlefield as a battle-wining tactic)
- Franco Prussian war 1870 (created the Second Reich of Wilhelm II)
Modern Times:
- Zeppelin + Gotha bomber offensive against England (not materially significant, but demonstrated incontrovertibly that England was vulnerable to air attack)
- Somme (bloodiest day in the history of British arms)
- Marne
- Ypres
- Guernica (makes the world fear "terror bombing" and the end of the world at one stroke from the sky -- a fear many still have today of ICBMs and SLBMs)
- Nanking (see guernica)
- Pearl Harbor (stunning display of military deception, and a demonstration of the aircraft carrier's displacement of the battleship as the primary naval unit)
- Taranto, 1940 (England scores big against Axis naval might at the low ebb of her own fortunes)
- Germany's Spring/Summer sweep through France and low countries (everyone said Hitler couldn't, or wouldn't do it. But he could, and did)
- El Alamein or any of the battles for Tobruk
- the struggle for Malta
- Operation Barbarossa 1941 (far and away the largest military invasion in the history of the world, and very likely to remain so)
- American daylight bomber offensive 1942-45
- German paratrooper conquest of Crete 1941 (paratroopers mount a major operation with heavy losses, and succeed)
- Arnhem, 1944 (paratroopers mount a major operation with heavy losses, and fail)
- Kiev 1941
- British night bomber offensive 1941-45
- Kursk (largest armored battle in history)
- Battle of the Philippine Sea (Japanese naval and air power crushed)
- Battle of the Bulge (Ardennes) 1944-45
- Linebacker II 1972 (brought North Vietnam to the peace table)
- Falklands 1982 (England demonstrates its navy still has global reach)
The sheer number of historically significant battles and campaigns not mentioned in this book -- and those named above are just a few of the more obvious -- casts doubts about this book's credibility as some kind of historical authority. As an introductory piece it is paltry and far too vague; as a serious study it is woefully inadequate. Slapdash in every sense, to be avoided if you can find something better.
Disappointing coffee-table fluff.......2007-08-05
As the first reviewer here notes, choosing "the" 70 great battles is bound to be controversial. I for one have to wonder about the absence of such great battles as Zama, the Catalaunian Plains and -- amazingly -- Austerlitz. Or the inclusion of Bosworth, Inkerman and Omdurman. I agree with including Manzikert, although the narrative glosses over the main consequence of the Byzantine defeat -- the permanent and ultimately fatal loss of Anatolia with its essential manpower. But Ankara shouldn't be here...yes, Timur won a great victory, but its effects were quite brief, and hardly slowed the rise of the Ottoman Empire.
Some of the graphics and maps are useful, and others repetitive or frustratingly skimpy, but the narratives of each battle are really too flimsy to provide anything new to all but military history novices. This is a big, hefty volume of History-Lite which serious readers can easily live without.
The Magic Number?.......2006-01-24
Within its seven major divisions, The Seventy Great Battles in History contains concise descriptions and evaluations of important battles and campaigns beginning with Marathon and ending with the Gulf War. In his introduction to the text, Editor Jeremy Black explains that his reasons for compiling the work include noting changes in the nature of warfare and explaining battles which changed history. Individual entries, within this lavishly-illustrated omnibus volume, are written by 25 contributors, including Editor Black.
Now, if any two readers were to agree with the writers, the editor or with each other about which were the seventy most important or greatest battles, it would be a stone wonder. That being said, I do take serious exception to a couple of battles Mr. Black chose to omit. They are exceptions with which I believe many readers will concur.
World War 1 analysis is included within the book's "Modern Times" section. There is one entry lumping 1918 campaigns together. The battles of Tannenberg (1914) and Verdun (1916) rate individual entries. So does Jutland (1916). On the other hand, the First Battle of the Marne (1914) doesn't make Editor Black's cut.
Let's look at the First Marne omission. If the French had failed during that exchange and the Germans had gone on and taken Paris, the war in the West would have effectively been over right then. The small British Regular Army would not have been able to stand against the huge German force of professionals and reservists without French participation. There would have been no Somme, no Verdun, no Passchendaele and the battle of Jutland wouldn't have happened. Had the French been knocked out of the war, the Germans would then have been able to turn the entire weight of their army against the Russians. A battle such as Tannenberg might have happened a little later than it did or, perhaps, the Russians would simply have sued for peace. The potential political ramifications of a German Marne victory are also staggering. The Ottoman Turks would have remained in control of the Middle East. The royal houses of Hohenzollern, Romanoff and Hapsburg would not have fallen when they did. In short, the world as we know it simply wouldn't exist.
Because of its consequences, the First Marne was a pivotal event in world history. Jutland was an indecisive exchange that changed nothing. Granted, it was the only significant fleet engagement of the Great War. It was also the last great battle in which vast numbers of huge gun ships fought it out. (The night contests between American and Japanese cruisers off Guadalcanal, during WW 11, were far more important to that war's outcome, but involved fewer and smaller ships.) I have no quibble with including Jutland in the book. It's a worthwhile footnote in naval warfare. I do, however, more than quibble with including Jutland while ignoring the First Battle of the Marne.
The editor includes Two American Revolutionary War battles, Saratoga and Yorktown, within the "Eighteenth Century" umbrella. These are obviously good calls; but he mentions only a few words about the Second Battle of the Virginia Capes which made the French/American Yorktown victory possible. That naval engagement, between Admiral De Grasse's French fleet and the British, left the French in Control of the Chesapeake at a critical time. It meant that the French could move troops and land artillery to support the Continental Line during the Yorktown siege. It also meant that the British could neither withdraw their Yorktown troops (to fight in another place on another day) or resupply them by sea. Admiral De Grasse's stunning upset victory off the Chesapeake meant that the Yorktown outcome became as much of a sure thing as is possible in any human undertaking.
Had the French lost the Second Battle of the Virginia Capes, the Revolutionary War would probably have dragged on with potentially unhappy consequences for the United States when American politicians eventually concluded a peace or negotiated settlement with the mother country. Because it was an upset victory and because it made Yorktown possible, I believe that French achievement at sea should have its own section, not just a passing (and somewhat biased) reference within the Yorktown analysis. I don't understand how it could be excluded from Seventy Battles.
In writing this review, I've cherry picked the Great War and Revolutionary War eras to discuss because they're periods about which I have a modest knowledge. I'm sure other readers will do the same thing with other sections of the book.
With other similar battle compendiums from which one may choose, this reader wonders 1) if seventy is really the magic number for battles; 2) if Editor Black chose battles in other historical epochs as eccentrically as he seems to have done in both the Great War and Revolutionary eras and; 3) if there aren't better treatments of great battles in print.
Come to think of it, one of the books I used to check my facts for this piece would make a much better one-volume warfare compilation than The Seventy Great Battles in History. Depending on the edition, the book is known either as The Encyclopedia of Military History from 3500 B.C. to the Present or The Harper Encyclopedia of Military History from 3500 B.C. to the Present. Written by R. Ernest Dupuy and Trevor N. Dupuy, the work makes no attempt to stuff the history of warfare into a collection of seventy battles. Instead, its 1400 pages of text do a rather thorough job of being comprehensive. The down side to this work is that it's not currently in print. The up side is that it's usually available through Amazon used book sources.
Book Description
Despite the huge contribution of the French Army towards the Allied war effort during the Great War, curiously little has been published in English concerning it. Thus, Helion are pleased to bring back into print one of the finest Great War memoirs by a soldier of any army, the journal of French gunner Paul Lintier, covering the tumultuous events of August and September 1914.
A talented young writer (he had already had three small books published before the outbreak of war), Lintier served in the French 44th Artillery Regiment from 1913 until his death at the front in 1916. His account covers the outbreak of war, mobilization, his unit's first clash with the Germans at Virton on 22 August, the subsequent British and French withdrawal culminating in the 'miracle of the Marne', and the Battle of the Aisne, ending with his wounding during the latter battle on 22 September. Beautifully written, his account conveys, amongst other things, the little-known French experience of the discouraging and exhausting retreat from the advancing Germans, as well as the strains experienced by men and horses at the limits of their endurance. The fact that Lintier wrote it as a daily journal provides a fresh immediacy missing in many later accounts. A further posthumous volume of memoirs covering his service during 1915 and 1916 (until his death in action) was also published in French, and Helion hope to issue a translation of this in due course.
Key sales points: Superb firsthand account of the French view of the opening months of the war on the Western Front 1914, The author was a published writer before the war, and his immediate and engaging writing convey the remarkable and unique atmosphere of the 'open warfare' fought during August and September 1914, Sheds much light on the hitherto-neglected French Army of the Great War. Helion Library of the Great War - a series designed to bring into print rare books long out-of-print, as well as producing translations of important and overlooked material that will contribute to our knowledge of this conflict.

Customer Reviews:
For beginners only!.......2002-12-18
This is a very readable text that essentially parallels and expands upon the LabView Users Manuals. If you have read through all or most of those manuals you may find yourself rapidly skimming through Bishop's book as nothing more than a refresher. Newbies will appreciate the simplistic step-by-step approach but anyone beyond the basics will likely be disappointed. BTW, you can download the related files from the LabView site to get an idea of the content.
Good tutorial but............2002-01-06
This is a really great book! However, there is also a package of CD and book which I do not see offered here. The CD includes LabVIEW Student Edition. The referenced .vi's (virtual instruments) are available for download but, not the complete CD. I have been unable to locate the CD individually, only in bundled packages.
Great starter and comprehensive book.......2001-09-20
After reading all pages of this book and practicing all programs and exercises inside it within a few weeks, I become a proficient in Labview and I can develop any project easily. The only thing missing of this book is its CD which has all of its examples, but one can download it from its official website without any problem. Overall this book is great for any one who is new in labview and also for any one who doesnot have any programming skills and going to use it within his/her job.
Great for new starters.......2001-07-20
Gives you the basics to get started if you are a new timer.
Learning for Labview Does NOT include demo files........2001-04-04
Good book except that you really need to purchase or have the Labview student version. The book does not ship with a CD containing the demo files it refers to so often in the text. Makes it difficult to follow without the files.
