Wicked Sheet Music Review.......2007-09-24
If you love the music from the musical, then you've found the right book. While some of the songs have teeny differences between the recording and what's written, it's not enough to make it awful. The range is simple weather you're a contralto or a first soprano. The accompnament is a bit of a challenge, but easy to overcome with practice.
5 Stars for Accomplished Players - 2 Stars for Beginners.......2007-08-06
Pieces seem to be very true to the original score. Four and Five sharps or flats is common. Multiple changes in time signature within the pieces. Great if you're comfortable playing difficult music.
Incredibly accurate.......2007-07-14
I'm loving this book! The arrangements are a great difficulty level- challanging, but not impossible. No One Mourns the Wicked, Defying Gravity, Dancing Through Life, and What Is This Feeling are edited, but not that bad, and Thank Goodness is reduced to Glinda's solo, I Couldn't Be Happier.
There's really no substitute for this book. The arrangements and the chords themselves are too complicated to pick up by ear. I'd encourage anyone who loves this musical and knows piano to invest in this book. It's a real keeper.
FOR ALL PAINO PLAYERS!!.......2007-05-12
this book is great for all piano players. it is fun and easy. also, it has the lyrics so you can sing along while you play. this book is the best.
So good, but so hard!.......2007-05-05
Five stars to this book because the songs are beautifully adapted and true to the musical. However, I bought this book so I could tinker with it on my piano, and it is way too hard for me to get anywhere! I played piano for 8 years as a kid, and am now just a rusty beginner/intermediate player. I thought I could eventually get these songs down by playing them over and over, but after flipping through everything I think the only near-manageable song is "For Good." My favorite, "No Good Deed," is completely impossible and I'll just have to listen to my CD. I would suggest this book for the highly advanced pianist. As for me, I'm going to go check out that easy piano version.

Sassy and delightful.......2006-11-02
As a word freak, grammar junkie, romance reader and lover of all things funny, I would like to recommend "The Passionate Papers of Fiona Pilgrim" to all. Not only have I read it multiple times, but also I have given it as a gift to those in my life who need a good laugh.
John Rubadeau: great writer, great professor........2003-10-17
I bought this book because I was attending John Rubadeau's writing class at the University of Michigan as this book was being published. He was so hysterically funny, brilliantly interesting, and fantastically energetic about grammar and writing that I knew that this book would reflect his passion for the English language and for life in general! Boy, was I right!!
Great work of art, John!!!
I highly recommend this book.......2002-05-09
When I first picked it up, the title made me think that this WAS a romance novel. What makes it such a hysterical book is that it's about an erudite manly-man in financial trouble who thinks the easiest way to make a quick buck is writing a trashy romance novel. Only he doesn't know how so he seeks help from the most successful romance novel author of all.
What I like best is the style of prose and the difficulties the main character, Joe Leonard, has as he writes from three different personas: himself, Fiona Pilgrim (the fawning housewife would-be author seeking the help), and the romance novel heroine. I can't stop laughing while I read how he tries to keep it up. This is a great novel.
"Guffman" and "Spinal Tap" for Writers.......2002-04-09
If you laughed at the "Remains of the Day" lunch boxes and "Dinner with Andre" action figures in "Waiting for Guffman", and if you fed off the original plot twists in "World According to Garp" - in short if you want a great laugh delivered via terrific writing, this is a book to add to your library.
In the beginning we meet Joe Leonard, frustrated legit writer, desperate for income, who adopts a pseudonym (Fiona Pilgrim), with the intention of hacking out romance novels.
Been there (with above plot) and done that, you might think, but you haven't been where this author takes you. After setting the premise, author Rubadeau reveals his tale through a series of letters from his protaganist, Joe to an academic mentor at Harvard, from Joe (as Fiona) to June Featherstone (Britain's top romance author), and from June to Fiona. As three romance stories develop, those real more implausible than those fictional, we learn the do's and don'ts of authoring romance (i.e., romance readers aren't generally fluent in foreign languages, but we can skip translating "cul-de-sac"), along with more details about Romania than we ever hoped (or wanted) to know.
In one sentence, I recommend "The Passionate Papers of Fiona Pilgrim" because it's well-crafted and fun!

Captian Trips.......2006-01-14
Whether or not you're a fan of the Grateful Dead of Jerry Garcia, this is a good starter book to get the general facts about Jerry's life and a little about the Grateful Dead. The information given in this book is pretty good, but it doesn't go as in depth as I would have liked to. The photographs in the book give a better idea as to what Jerry was into at that particular time. You can see what Troy was trying to describe, like his clothes and friends and his general attitude towards life comes out in the pictures. This book is definitely a good book for general knowledge.
Cherry Garcia.......2005-10-26
I really enjoied reading this book. I liked how it was about both Jerry and the Dead and how Troy wrote about how Jerry got exposed to all those different styles or music that got reflected in his music. I would say that it is a must read for any Dead-Head, old or new.
Cursory and inadequate.......2000-10-06
I was going to recommend this to those just mildly curious about Jerry Garcia, but on second thought I can't do that. It is an inadequate look at a profoundly complex man, done in a style that, once you have read better work, you realize leaves big wedges of the pie out. Blair Jackson's biography is THE definitive work, of course, but I would also read Dark Star and even the hilarious (but occasionally innacurate) Living with the Dead by Rock Scully ahead of this. Jerry would have hated the name, too: Captain Trips...he despised all that psychadelic pop icon schmaltz, including the skulls and the Uncle Sam hat. He just wanted to play guitar, which may in the end be his most eloquent and lasting testament to all of us.
Not the definitive work.......1999-09-28
While an interesting work and worth reading, it is not nearly the biography that Blair Jackson's "Garcia" is. Many aspects of Jerry's life are somewhat polished up it seems. Not that gory expose is desirable, but still I was left feeling that perhaps the book had a censored feel to it. This is just an opinion. Read Jackson's book, then "Dark Star", for a much more complete and well rounded view of Jerry's life.
ATTN: DEADHEADS.......1999-08-13
This is a great book to read if you have a growing interest in the Dead, as I did when I read it, or if you are into the Dead and just don't know as much about the band's history as you think you might like to. This is not only a great biography of Jerry, but also sort of a biography of the Dead, with memorable descriptions of the first acid tests and of Jerry's recovery from his diabetic coma during the 80's. A definate must-read for Deadheads, and maybe even interesting to others.

Book Description
On the Western Front in World War I, a generation faced a horrifying reality that ushered in the modern age. But in the previous century, many of the fears we still face were first given form in the pages of popular fiction. Books such as Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Dracula became modern myths because they gave people a safe way to confront modern fears also taking shape at that time. By looking at such varied subjects as Victorian architecture, urban crime, women's rights, and the impact of new technology, we can come to understand the peculiar relationship between horror in literature and the horror of daily life. World War I made it clear that the images of horror in popular fiction had not been an escape from the world around us, but a way of seeing deeper into it, as well as revealing the shape of things to come.

Book Description
The GNU/Linux® success story is well known. Firmly established as a high-performance operating system, its worldwide installations are increasing at phenomenal rates. Much of this success has been on the server side, but more and more PC users are turning to Linux on the desktop, as well. For those grounded in Microsoft Windows® or Apple Macintosh® graphical interfaces, the first look at a powerful Unix-style operating system can be daunting. This book provides a clear, no-nonsense introduction to the popular Red Hat® distribution of Linux. It takes you through installation and shows you the key parts of the system, always with an eye toward what can go wrong and what you need to know to get over the humps. Linux is known as a secure environment and a good platform to run a web server. These topics are among the many covered in this book. But did you know you can also burn CDs, sync a PalmPilot™, and edit slideshow presentations with powerful tools on Linux? Those topics are covered here, too. Red Hat currently provides two distributions, both documented in this book. The first is their commercial, subscription-based product, called Red Hat Enterprise Linux and also available through retail channels as Red Hat Professional Workstation. The second is the freely distributed Fedora distribution. The Publisher's Edition of Fedora is included in this book on two disks. New in this edition are installation instructions for Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Fedora, package updating for Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Fedora, information on the GRUB bootloader, and the CUPS printer system. Learning Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Fedora tells you how to:
- Prepare your system for installing Linux
- Install and configure Linux and the two popular desktop environments, GNOME and KDE.
- Run the most popular productivity tools on Linux: mailers, web browsers, OpenOffice, and Evolution.
- Obtain and set up software through the Red Hat Package Manager (RPM)
- Set up a Linux system for networking, either on your local area network (LAN), or via a dialup connection to the Internet.
- Use the system-administration tools included with Red Hat, GNOME, and KDE, including such valuable utilities as Samba file-sharing and the Apache web server.
- Understand and write shell scripts so you can peek under the hood and extend the power of Linux.

Learning Red Hat Enterprise Linux & Fedora, Fourth Edition.......2005-07-12
I found this book to be very readable and a good way of getting up to speed on Linux. The book: (i) guides you how to load Fedora onto your computer, (ii) describes how Linux works, and (iii) discusses Linux applications, networking and scripts. The author also touches on the Red Hat Enterprise version of Linux throughout the text. The Linux installation section is well written with plenty of screen shots showing the various screens during installation. The other sections are also very readable. The book comes with a couple of CDs containing Fedora Core1. A reader may wish to download a more recent version (Fedora 4 is available at the time this review was written). This book is a good springboard in getting into the Linux world with Fedora; however I think that a person will want to supplement this book with a reference on Linux (such as Linux in a Nutshell) in order to get a more detailed coverage on topics.
Perfect for what I was looking for..........2004-10-04
In my quest to learn Linux, I've been working through the book Learning Red Hat Enterprise Linux & Fedora by Bill McCarty (O'Reilly). This is exactly what I was looking for in a learning guide.
Chapter list: Why Run Linux?; Preparing to Install Linux; Installing Linux; How Linux Works; Using the GNOME and KDE Desktops; Using Linux Applications; Conquering the bash Shell; Installing Software Using the RPM Package Manager; Configuring and Administering Linux; Connecting to the Internet; Setting Up Network Services; Advanced Shell Usage and Shell Scripts; Linux Directory Tree; Principal Linux Files; Managing the Boot Process; Linux Command Quick Reference; Index
This book concentrates more on the desktop and graphical interface aspect of running Linux, which is exactly what I was looking for. While this book won't tell you everything you need to know about any specific subject (like shell programming or networking), it covers more than enough to get you up and running with a complete Linux setup. Using this volume, I've been able to get a full desktop and server setup going with little effort or trouble. By following the rest of the book, I'll gain a solid base of knowledge of Linux, and then I'll be ready to move on to more detailed learning.
Perfect level of coverage for where I'm at, and enough detail to get me up and running quickly... I like it.
Can't rate because it did not meet my needs.......2004-09-27
I wanted a book that could help me with fedora in TEXT MODE. This book looked great and obviously, books from Oreilly are always good so I bought it.
This book is absolutely NOT a good book to learn Fedora in TEXT MODE because the book is about graphic mode and it wasn't said somewhere. It's all about GNOME and KDE.
Be sure you use the graphic mode before buying!
End-user level introduction to Linux.......2004-08-10
From the title I would have suspected something about building scalable Linux servers for web applications. Turns out the book is nothing like that. It's a ground up introduction to Linux from the end-user perspective. It starts in Windows with prepping a system for Linux installation, works through the installation (replete with lots of screenshots), then goes into the basics of window managers and Linux Office-style applications. The last few chapters go into some depth on working in the shell and shell scripting, but it's pretty light.
This is a solid introduction to end-user level Linux that should be suitable for anyone who is reasonably technical (no need to be a programmer). The only reason I give it four stars instead of five is because of the reliance on numerous screenshots, which isn't the best way to explain things, and is not the quality that I expect from O'Reilly.
Good intro to Fedora.......2004-06-25
My recommendation is, this is a good book for a Linux novice or someone starting with Fedora for the first time.
Those with experience, will probably want to pass on this book. Its not likely you'll pick up anything new
(I didn't). (For those unfamiliar with what Red Hat has done with the split out of Fedora; think of
Fedora Core 1 as Red Hat Linux 9.1 or 10; if Red Hat had continued the product line.)
This book focuses on the "NEW" Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Fedora Core 1 Linux user. The book is a relatively
easy read. Bill McCarty writes a clear and well organized book. From a novice's perspective, the author gives
you, what you need to get Fedora installed, running and usable. The author does a good job of pointing
the reader at additional information sources on each topic. The book is short, less than 300 pages.
This is nice compared to some of the other 1,000 page plus Linux novice tomes; which try to be a "how to get
started" book and a "general reference" all at they same time; except they don't do either well. Linux should
be friendly, not scary. First timers shouldn't have to read a Encyclopedia to get started in Linux. I agree
with the author's choice of brevity for his book.
One suggestion to the author, would be to include output examples with the CLI (Command Line Interface) examples.
He does it with the GUIs, so why not with the CLIs???
I bought the book because "Red Hat Enterprise" (RHE) was in the title. I was disappointed in the fact there wasn't
more detail about RHE. In retrospect, anyone doing RHE, is probably an experienced Linux person working for a
company, where RHE is deployed and may even have had formal training on RHE. So why would they need this book?
My bona fides; I've been using been using various flavors of Unix for an embarrassing long time, Red Hat Linux
for 8 yrs (from release RH 3.0.3 to 9) and I have been running Fedora Core for about 5 months now.
Book Description
In a daring plan to end the war, the Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne jumped into the heart of Nazi-held Europe -- and began a journey into hell....
In September 1944 -- sixteen weeks after the D-Day invasion -- British Field Marshal Montgomery unleashed a daring attack aimed at the heart of Nazi Germany. For the men of the Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne, including nineteen-year-old Donald Burgett, the plan meant parachuting in broad daylight into Holland, securing the road to the Rhine River, and helping the British cross into Germany. It was a mission that sent thousands of young men to their deaths.
In this electrifying memoir, Donald Burgett takes us into seventy-two days of close-quarter combat in foxholes and towns against brutal Panzer counterattacks and into the face of the feared German 88mm artillery as the Screaming Eagles push straight into the might of the German Army. Capturing the horror and confusion of war, as ally and enemy move within yards of each other, Burgett tells the story of a legendary fighting unit's bloody victory -- in an epic battle for "a bridge too far."
Customer Reviews:
A Continuing Saga.......2007-09-17
I first read Donald Burgett's "Currahee" way back around 1975 or so. Many years later with the popularity of "D-Day","Citizen Soldiers" and "Band of Brothers" by Steven Ambrose I decided to re-read "Curahee". On doing so I found to my pleasant surprise that Don Burgett had continued his saga with "The Road to Arnhem - A Screaming Eagle in Holland".
When I re-read "Curahee" I found that it now seemed to me compelling but almost amateurish in its writing. Certainly as a 15 year old it had seemed more polished. But I was very pleasantly surprised by "The Road to Arnhem". While still compelling in its honest recitation of Donald Burgett's experiences as a member of the famed 101st Airborne infantry in World Wary Two, "Arnhem" is both more polished and more insightful into not only the events as they occured but also the author's feelings both at the time and in retrospect. For those of us who have never experienced combat Don Burgett does an excellent job of not only describing the physical nature but also of what was going through his mind as the events happened. The author also gives a wonderful tribute to the part played in the operation by both the British and Polish airborne troops - his sense of comraderie with these fellow troops is evident.
For anyone interested in a "ground eye view" of events of Operation Market Garden this book is a must.
An excellent first hand account of Operation Market Garden.......2007-05-16
I had a hard time understanding why Burgett's book about WW2 are
such good reads. The prose is relatively simple and direct, and
he most certainly does not rely on any literary devices. But perhaps it is exaclty
this, together with the fact that the man must have a most extraordinary
memory (or most vivid imagination - although I assume the former),
that makes these books so gripping. His books do transport
the reader back to the fields and foxholes of Europe in late 1944.
While no book can bring across the actual firsthand experience of war,
Burgett's books are probably as close as one can get.
Honor above victory.......2006-11-05
The real story of how the pompous banty rooster General Montgomery nearly lost the war on the Western front. It is a tale of arrogance and betrayal, wherein the betrayed fought nobly and many gave their last measure of devotion to a lost cause.
Heavy dose of Monty bashing.......2006-05-18
This is Burgett's personal account in Operation Market Garden. A good read if you enjoy first-person accounts sprinkled with liberal dose of humor.
Trapped 72 days behind enemy lines.......2005-12-20
This is the second book in a set of 4 books by the author, the books start with his training as a paratrooper in WWII, and follow his time in the war until he gets discharged after the war. The books in chronological order are 1)Currahee! 2) The Road to Arnhem 3) Seven Roads to Hell 4) Beyond the Rhime.
For those who call WWII, the last "good war", this is a wake up. This war was just as full of horror and nightmare as any conflict, and the men treated as poorty. We get a view of the daily misery of the troops between the episodes of their bravery driven by the urge to kill or be killed. The author was a member of the newly formed Screaming Eagles 101st Paratroop Airborne division, and the division made history and a reputation in this war.
Sixteen weeks after their heroics in the D-Day invasion, where they had been parachuted in the dark behind enemy lines, the 101 is being deployed again. Rested and resupplied they are anxious to get into the fray, if only to help speed the end of the war. This time they are turned over to British Field Marshal Montgomery to be used in his plan for Operation Market Garden. Paratroopers are best applied when dropped behind enemy lines to busy the enemey for 24 hours until the infantry can move up. Montgomery planned to drop English, American, and Polish paratroops as a new Airborne Army deep in enemy lines to secure the road to the Rhine River and it's vital bridges before the Germans blew them up while retreating. Because Montgomery did not fully understand the role of paratroopers, he had them risk a day time drop, as well as the gliders that were to bring their suppliles. The Germans had learned of their plans, due to Montgomery's tremendous blunder in failing to secure the battle plans, and simply attacked each glider from a hidden position with artillary and tanks as they landed. Our boys now had no food, transportation, or heavy weapons to rely on and were dropping right where the Germans knew they would. They just needed to hold out a day or two for the British infantry and supply convoy that was only 60 miles away. The support from mechanized units and infantry did not arrive on the next day, or even 8 days later, when the decimated British Paratroopers in one sector were finally given permission to withdraw. By then nearly the entire unit had been killed by overwhelming firepower from mechanized units. Outmannned and outgunned, the Red Devil unit fought on bravely. Betrayed by ineptness in command, help never came. The Polish paratroops suffered the same fate. The 101st could not come to their aid with the huge Rijnn River blocking their path, and their own survival at stake. In fact the 101st were stuck in the battle without aid or resupply from Montgomery for an unbelievable 72 days. They had been sent out much further than was an accessible goal for the infantry, tanks, and supplies to reach them. Even without supplies or support, the American paratroopers met their goals as ordered, but the failure of support and the misuse of their real skill as quick shock troops had been wasted along with the thousands of lives of nearly 80% of the men who had dropped in from the sky into the operation. Monty had blundered in a horrific manner, and worse yet would not admit a failure and kept the men there well past any reasonable judgement.
This book series by Donald Burgett is the most graphic and honest description of being an active fighting soldier in WWII I have read and left a deep impression on me. Simple words and detailed memeories from a simple man. It is a great read, and I could not put it down.

Book Description
The Wilton Diptych, in the National Gallery in London, has always been the focus of attention, not only because of its intrinsic beauty as a work of art but also because its evident personal link with Richard II - a king who was ever conscious of the regal image and his God-given monarchical status. Following the important exhibition at the National Gallery in 1992, after the cleaning of the panels, a symposium was held on all aspects of the painting itself, and on the history and arts of Richard II's time. The present volume offers the paper given on that occasion, as well as some additional contributions. The essays included in this book cover many fields. Richard II's ideas of kingship are considered by Nigel Saul; his major architectural achievement, the rebuilding of Westminster Hall, is presented by Christopher Wilson, while its sculptural embellishments, the statues of English kings, are examined, together with Richard's tomb, by Phillip Lindley. Kay Staniland asks whether the King's clothing was extravagant and Marian Campbell describes the jewellery and metalwork known to have been in his possession. Shelagh Mitchell brings out Richard II's profound devotion to the cult of saints. Celia Fisher looks at the meaning of the flowers depicted in the field of Paradise in which the Virgin and Angels are set, and the individual plants on which the White Hart is couched, and Lucy Sandler compares devotional images in contemporary manuscripts. Ashok Roy comments on the technique of the Diptych. Lisa Monnas brings examples of textiles which closely match those in which the figures in the Diptych are apparelled. Nigel Morgan assesses the 'signi- fication' of the banner, and Maurice Keen considers the painting as a possible crusading icon.

Customer Reviews:
Wow. All the colours blinded me........2007-03-30
Wow. The book was so illustrated and so colourful, I got distracted. And, boy, do they like to write...I guess it also combats illiteracy!
I foresee a crucial change in forthcoming editions: the style of the guy's pants in the elevator will go out of fashion and they will have to issue a new edition (it will cost more, however, because printing technology will allow you to see the guy in 3D).
I personally find the "features" in these American-style textbooks to be nothing but distractions. Besides, the level of physics students went down, not up, as physicists will tell you. So how are the pedagogical "features" helping? Accordingly, in truth, the level of the books went down. The reality is that they're targeting a certain niche market here, keep that in mind. Granted, this book has been around. But, for real, it's overpriced and if that is what they made you buy, well, I'm sorry. On the bright side, you could be using Halliday's, in which case you'd be even worse off. Seriously though, this book is representative of a slew of books that are full of fluff and overpriced.
If you feel adventurous, get yourself something with less colour and more math, straight out of the 70s, like Alonso and Finn, or McKelvey and Grotch. I garantee you will get to calculate the apparent weight of fishes in elevators. Besides, come to think of it, hey, all the good math and physics books from Springer and Kluwer are in black-and-white!
Excellent Textbook! .......2006-10-27
I really am impressed with this textbook. It is one of the most organized texts I have ever used in college. The authors and publisher do an excellent job of "formatting" the topics. All equations are very well marked and numbered. Many other texts throw an equation in the middle of a paragraph and you can never find it when you need it. Not so in this book! You will always find just what you are looking for.
They also do a great job of explaining the topics, with many many examples in each chapter. They provide "quick quizzes" in each chapter with answers at the end of the chapter that allows you to see how you are doing. They make liberal use of colors and illustrations which all help to ease the strain on the eye, and help the mind follow along.
Overall, VERY GOOD BOOK! This book will never leave my library reference collection.
Successful textbook.......2006-08-18
This is one of the most popular and most useful calculus based physics textbook in the market. Normally if you have a textbook and some problem books such as Thinking like a physicist, Problems for Physics Students etc and work through as many problem as you can, you shall have no problem mastering the concepts and getting A's from your class.
Solid introduction to college physics for scientists and engineers.......2006-08-03
Next to older editions of Haliday and Resnick, this is probably the best introductory physics text for "college level physics," and I have seen and used most of them after 20+ years of teaching physics. The material in this text does require previous experience with physics (high school or first term algebra-trig based general physics) plus knowledge of introductory calculus. (Limits, continuity, derivatives and integrals - first year calculus, frequently taken concurrently.) I have taught from, and used earlier versions of the text and have found them, (and this), to be good, reliable texts, with good, clear explanations and contemporary applications, with few or no complaints from students. (Physics is a dry subject for many students - this text should help make it a little more palatable, if not interesting.)
The material covered will be challenging for those who do not have the prerequisite background in mathematics, since free and frequent use of derivatives and integrals is made throughout the text, and facility with trigonometry and algebra is assumed. There's a lot of material covered in 38 chapters, from measurements and mechanics through light and optics. (The 39th chapter introduces special relativity, but is frequently skipped by many instructors, though I always present this topic since many students are fascinated by it, as well as by Einstein - thanks to PBS and Discovery specials. However, relativity is usually the first topic covered in the follow-on modern physics course.)
There are many well done diagrams, graphs, drawings and photographs to help visualize the explanations and examples. Special "blue boxes" highlight historical notes and include pictures of historical figures. Qualitative (conceptual) 'Questions' follow each chapter as well as 'Problems' (color coded by degree of difficulty), some iconed for computer/calculator numerical solution or simulation or on-line "coaching" using the free PhysicsNow web-based learning system. The reading material in each section is also complemented with 'Quick Quizzes' with answers at the end of each chapter. Many complementary example problems are worked completely in the reading and appendices are included at the end of the text for all essential mathematical techniques, including derivatives, integrals and error propagation. The back and front covers (with adjacent heavy pages) provide essential and easily accessible information on units, conversions, physical or useful constants and symbology used in the text.
The text contains no chapters on atomic or nuclear physics (Bohr atomic theory, quantum mechanics, periodic table structure, etc.) because these are topics also usually covered in a separate follow-on modern physics course for "scientists and engineers."
I rated the text 4 stars because it is divided into 39 chapters, rather than ~30, which would be more helpful, I think, for a two 15-week semester or three 10-week quarter sequence of courses in "college physics" for scientists and engineers.
To learn the fundamentals of physics.......2006-05-01
I had used Serway's textbook before the second author joined. Different editions may exhibit slight differences, but this book is very suitable for those who want to gain a solid fundamental in physics. I believe this book is intended to address freshmen and sophomores, who major in math, sciences and engineering and it executes this task very successfully. It requires knowledge of calculus for better understanding.
The chapters do not contain excessively long, boring discussions; rather, they are presented with adequate discussions. Worked-out problems are especially beneficial to understand the concepts. If one solves and understands these examples, they can attack the end-of-chapter problems more easily. The end-of-chapter problems are classified into 3 categories; standard difficulty, medium difficulty and challenging problems. Therefore, a student can make use of his time according to the level of difficulty of his course, background etc. If you little time to practice and a fair knowledge of the subject matter, you could easily start with medium level problems and try the harder ones as well.
Some chapters contain some interesting articles about everyday physical phenomena which are related to the concepts presented. Hence, the student has a chance to relate theory and life and get a more profound comprehension of physics.
Answers to odd-numbered problems are given in the back of the book, so you can check your results. Many numbers used in these problems are not hard to tackle without a calculator. A smart student can solve many problems with a pencil and paper.

Book Description
Once Upon an Oldman is an account of the controversy that surrounded the Alberta government's construction of a dam on the Oldman River to provide water for irrigation in the southern part of the province. Jack Glenn argues that, despite claims to the contrary, the governments of Canada and Alberta are not dedicated to protecting the environment and will even circumvent the law in order to avoid accepting responsibility for safeguarding the environment and the interests of Native people.
Glenn describes the geography and history of the Oldman River basin, the institutional arrangements behind the dam project, and the ongoing controversy as it has unfolded since 1976. He then takes a close look at the disparate groups involved in the controversy: the governments of Alberta and Canada and their agencies, the Southern Alberta Water Management Committee, the Friends of the Oldman River Society, and the Peigan Indian Band. Considering these in the context of major issues raised by the project, he discusses water management and irrigation, environmental impacts, and implications for the culture and beliefs of the Peigan, including their claim to a share of the flow of the river.
In Once Upon an Oldman, Glenn has pulled together information from a wide range of sources: the media, correspondence of politicians and public servants, reports from government agencies, environmental groups, and the Peigan Indians, court decisions, and interviews. What emerges is a disturbing and fascinating tale of confrontation, pitting governments against environmentalists and Native people, that convincingly demonstrates that resorting to the courts is an ineffective way to protect both the environment and those who have lived here since before the arrival of Europeans.
