Book Description
Nobel Prize winner James Tobin has made outstanding contributions to modern macroeconomics. In this final collection of his work he examines the economic policies of the United States and its relations with other major economies after 1990. In James Tobin's view, the welfare of populations depends uniquely on these policies and it is important to be aware of their impact. This book, now available in paperback, brings together James Tobin's recent work, both published and unpublished, on finance and globalization, currency crises and bailouts. Emphasis is placed on international economic relations and policies, and on the IMF and World Bank. In particular, economic and monetary relations among nations, exchange rate problems and policies and the `Tobin Tax', popular in Europe but much misunderstood, are discussed. Professor Tobin also examines the impact of his earlier work on recent US fiscal policy. The Clinton administration followed a tight fiscal policy leading to budget surpluses, and this enabled Alan Greenspan at the Federal Reserve to follow an `easy', low interest rate, monetary policy. This mix was advocated back in the 1950s and 1960s by Paul Samuelson and James Tobin. The memo Professor Tobin wrote for the J.F. Kennedy campaign of 1960 is published for the first time. The policy was not applied until 30-35 years later. Presenting a framework for understanding monetary and fiscal policies and how they determine full employment and growth, the book will prove invaluable to students and scholars of macroeconomics, as well as economists wishing to gain an insight into Professor Tobin's unique contribution to economics.

A good opportunity to get in touch with State of Arts in International Monetary Economics.......2007-01-10
This book constitutes a very good opportunity to get in touch with the most recent developments in International Monetary Economics, and is highly updated. I purchased it because I wished to know something else about Prof. Tobin. The article about Financial Liberalization is a must read for every economist, in order to put some order in the ideas about what does it really means. I intend to get some other books from Prof. Tobin, but I do recommend this one for anyone who are looking for paths in the most updated researches.

Book Description
This book offers the most detailed account so far of the early works of these four minimalist composers, putting extensive discussion of the music into a biographical perspective. The true musical minimalism of the 1960s and early 1970s is placed in the wider context of their music as a whole, and considered within the cultural conditions of the period, which saw not only the rise of minimalism in the fine arts but also crucial changes in the theory and practice of musical composition in the Western cultivated tradition.

makes you ponder what this was all about.......2005-01-19
The phenomenon of minimalist music I think is better understood from its initial stages, for after market popularity sets in the theoretical fascinations seem to dissipate, seem to become rationalized away as unimportant and cumbersome. If you take all four praticioners here, to my mind only their early works seem to hold any interest at all,it is only the only works that have a "longevity" factor, where we can still find points of interests. For it was in the early works that carried the weight into what we have now.
Musical minimalism as well is a kind of misnomer in that the term began in the visual arts and if you go there you will find the term and its results and achievments has a much more vigorous base of contemplation and export. There simply is more important things happening there, as Donald Judd, the minimalist shrine of cubes and geometric shapes in an old Army base in Marfa Texas or the flourescent lighting schemes of Dan Flavin, the powerful sculptural plates of Richard Serra,or painters abound as Ellsworth Kelly, Frank Stella and Bridget Riley. There simply is no comparison with the level of conceptual depth and gestural focus, what art is suppose to do, what it did, and how the concept is engaged, and how it responds to its context and art history,or a temporality (how for instance the spirit, ir-religious of course is engaged in Richard Serra, his plates where the human mind simply stands there engaged in peace with his own existence or sense of space and time). Musical minimalism has no equivalent, and it is a shame for it could have had this. La Monte Young's "Well-Tuned Piano", a 9 hour work with just intonation tunings of the piano comes close to the temporal vigours of Judd's shrine I beleive.
With the introduction of opera in the works of Glass well now we are in another dimension, for Glass resorted to traditional classical structures of opera, duets, trios, quartets, (as in Aknathen) this is no longer innovative means. Potter's book draws light on this paradigm here makes you think of these issues what minimalism did and what it is now. Was it simply a fad?, or did it produce sustainable music?, music we can return to once or twice, or was minimalism simply "grist" for the mill of the market, one time, make the cash, take the money and run. Again the importance of minimalism is found in its early repertoire, Reich fascinating threadbare music for four woodblocks was all he needed to write to proclaim a status, or Glass's early music with Farfisa organs and saxophones,"Music in Fifths" or Riley's "In C", or his "Keyboard Studies" are all relevant pieces we can return to unpretenciously.
The late Morton Feldman is of course not here. He had intense knowledge of the visual arts world and his last works sought to reclaim this paradigm for music (his Second String Quartet, and Triadic Memories, For Chritian Wolff) are works scaling long durational lengths a place where minimalism in music seems to be now a beginning point not an end. Had Feldman lived I think he would have written even longer works. Of course Cage's massive work for organ now being realized in Halberstadt Germany, a work lasting years is also a step in the right direction.
music theory exposition, and history too.......2001-03-22
Potter's book will be best appreciated by those with a much better understanding of music theory than I. However, I learned something about the personal and musical history of so-called "minimalism." (Potter falls prey to some extent to the problem of reifying an abstraction -- having first grouped some things together into a category, then searching for the true meaning of the category.) Is there a torch passed, so to speak, from Young to Riley to Reich to Glass? Glass is the only one to adamantly deny it, but Potter documents the basis for seeing it just that way (including Reich's influence on Glass).
One aspect I am keen to know more about, but which Potter doesn't stress overly much, is the striking confluence of non-Western influences. Young and Riley are both disciples of the North Indian master singer, Pandit Pran Nath, who died in 1996. Reich studied both African drumming as well as the gamelan music of Bali. Glass studied Indian music, after being immersed in serialism. With the European "classical" tradition at an impasse at the turn of the millennium, it seems only natural that the future would lie in creative fusions and combinations with other traditions. (Not a very original idea, I realize, as evidenced by the recent emphasis of the Kronos Quartet among others.) Minimalism seems by now to be another style that passed into history and critical assessments -- is there an opening there that is being missed?

Customer Reviews:
Worth every penny... but you're going to need some glue........2007-03-24
I love this book, absolutely the best money I've ever spent on stickers. Even if I only ever use half of these, it was still a bargain. However, as stated elsewhere, the stickers barely stick to anything! I can't even get them to stay on things like my computer case! So be warned, you're going to need to find an alternate method for making them stickier.
TOTAL fun and subversion.......2007-03-09
My son got one for Christmas. I was SO impressed I bought one the next day.
An absolutely fabulous collection of stickers. Something for everyone. GO BUY IT! You won't be disappointed!
Yummy Stickers.......2007-03-08
Best $10 I've ever spent on stickers! So much fun, there is a sticker just right for everyone you know!
Great stickers, except..........2007-02-08
The text on the stickers is great, and I'm glad to finally be able to get them all in one big book rather than buying them individually (for a lot more).
However... the adhesive on the stickers is really, really, REALLY weak. They won't even stick to a non-completely-flat surface, and even on an ideal surface they come off VERY easily. After two days, some of them have started to peel THEMSELVES off.
Now, this might be a result of the book being shipped to Minnesota in the winter and having been exposed to extreme cold, but I gave it over 24 hours to get back to room temperature and have been using the thing at an ambient 66 degrees. Stickers should stick at 66 degrees.
So, cool stickers, but you need a glue-stick to actually stick them.
Suprisingly terrific.......2007-01-09
When you think about buying a book of stickers it probably brings you back to when you were ten years old and stickers were tools that drove your parents nuts. Sticker Nation really brings stickers alive by giving them real meaning and spreading a message. Srini Kumar is an obviously thoughtful and intelligent person who is in touch with our societies vibrations. I keep this book out on my coffee table and have gotten more comments about it then any other book I put out. Visitors are instantly fascinated with the idea of reading a book through stickers. I highly recommend it!

Book Description
Richard D. Heffner started interviewing major newsmakers on television when Dwight D. Eisenhower was president and Charlie Rose a toddler. Heffner, whose illustrious career includes co-founding New York’s WNET and serving as chairman of the motion picture ratings board, has hosted The Open Mind—the longest-running public-affairs program in television history—since 1955. Now he is drawing on forty-seven years of those televised conversations, as well as his own thoughtful perspective on the last half century, to mold As They Saw It. Drawing on the template established by last year’s Conversations with Eli Wiesel (drawn from the twenty-two Open Mind programs he and Wiesel have done together), Heffner has woven nearly five decades of provocative and thoughtful discussions with everyone from Malcolm X to Donald Rumsfeld, Eleanor Roosevelt to Norman Mailer, into a unique and authoritative Terkelesque history covering the major stories of our time. As They Saw It is a conversational history of the past fifty years, as spoken by the figures who made and lived that history. It is a treasury of never-before-published material from a dazzling array of figures—both tremendous reading and a major new source of material for students and historians alike.
Customer Reviews:
History comes alive........2003-12-25
This is not a reference book with biographical notes and observations about those who have made history during our generation. These are the actual words and thoughts of those persons extracted through interviews by Richard Heffner one of the most gifted, articulate, and accomplished historians of our age. If you don't read this book and make it a part of your library, you will be missing an important opportunity. I recommend it most highly.

Great Guide.......2002-08-02
I purchased this guide after losing the original one from 3 years ago. I found this one much more detailed and a lot more helpful. Instead of flipping around pages to find which Pokemon is caught where then flipping to another page to find out what HM's and TM's it can learn, you can get it all on the page for that Pokemon. Thanks again for another great book.
Sincerely, Eileen Caprio

Book Description
A landmark work of New Journalism is now available in softcover.
Safe Area Gorazde is Joe Sacco's 240-page opus about the war in the former Yugoslavia. Sacco spent four months in Bosnia in 1995-1996, immersing himself in the human side of life during wartime, researching stories rarely found in conventional news coverage. The book focuses on the Muslim enclave of Gorazde, which was besieged by Bosnian Serbs during the war. Sacco spent four weeks in Gorazde, entering before the Muslims trapped inside had access to the outside world, electricity or running water.
The hardcover edition of Safe Area Gorazde put Sacco on the map as one of the pre-eminent journalists of his time, and the softcover edition will present his work to a wider audience. The book has been prominently featured in The New York Times, The New York Times Book Review, Time, Utne Reader, Spin, The London Times, The Washington Post, Brill's Content, several NPR programs, The Boston Globe, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Economist, The Atlantic Monthly, and other media. The book also led to Sacco being named a recipient of a 2001 Guggenheim Fellowship. Safe Area Gorazde features an introduction by Christopher Hitchens, political columnist for The Nation and Vanity Fair.

Insightful reporting from a different perspective.......2006-10-17
Joe Sacco, Safe Area Gorazde: The War in Eastern Bosnia 1992-1995 (Fantagraphics, 2002)
Joe Sacco's spent some time in Gorazde after things calmed down a bit over there-- got to know the people, talked to them a lot, blended in with the scenery. He drew them, related their words, drew the things they saw and experienced day to day. Safe Area Gorazde is the result.
If you're used to either the current spate of war memoirs or the current spate of graphic novels, Safe Area Gorazde will likely seem familiar, yet still somewhat out of place. It is a book that resides comfortably in neither category, but I can't quite call it a successful cross of the two; it's too narrative for graphic noveldom, while being too impressionist to really classify as a war memoir. This is not to say that the book is bad by any means; there is a great deal to be absorbed here, and given the short shrift received by the plight of Gorazde as it was happening in the American press, far more Americans should be absorbing it than already have. Sacco has a gentle, self-deprecating humor, and the kind of ear that turns even the most unpleasant interviewee into a sympathetic character. As well, while most of Sacco's drawings are straightforward-- there are an almost unsettling number of scenes in this book featuring a single character against a monochrome background, as if being interviewed on a talk show (or up against a wall being faced by a firing squad)-- every once in a while one pops out that makes you realize that, yes, there's a war going on in Gorazde as Sacco is conducting these interviews. The scarcity of the out-and-out brutal pictures makes them all the more effective in Sacco's pastiche of desperation, loss, and ever-present gallows humor.
Good stuff, this. ***
The genocide of Muslims by Christians in the 1990s.......2006-09-01
I just finished reading this brilliant work. I was in Eastern Europe in 1991-1993 and saw the refugees coming out of Bosnia. I followed the story as close as I could, even visting a refugee camp. But Sacco's illustrations put me on the ground in the supposed safe zones. The brutality of the supposedly Christian Serbs to Muslim Bosnians is so overwheliming it makes any beheadings in Iraq look like a birthday party in comparison.
The book also does a nice job giving the history of the war, including the role Clinton played, for those who don't remember the 1990s. Please rread this book. You can do it in a day.
Awsome history graphic novel.......2006-01-16
A graphic novel that reveals the history of the Bosnian war and cleansing of Muslims and Crotians by the Serbs.Novel is by Joe Sacco a Journalist and cartoonist. He also has writtin other graphic novels.
An Intimate look at Bosnia via graphic novel format.......2005-09-22
Safe Area Gorazde shows on a personal level what people went through during the oftentimes savage Serbian war on Bosnia in the early nineties. In typical thug fashion, the Serbians managed to violate every aspect of diplomacy as they quite literally butchered and stole their way through the eastern regions of Bosnia. Joe Sacco does a good job capturing the tragedy and the emotion of the situation, though I must admit that I found his art to be very distracting. For what it is, however, the art is internally consistent and well done.
Comparisons to Joe Kubert's "Fax from Sarajevo" are inevitable. As journalism, "Safe Area Gorazde" is a much superior work, though as a comic book, "Fax from Sarajevo" is far, far better. But then, Kubert is a grandmaster of the craft, after all, just as Sacco is more directly experienced with graphic-format documentaries.
Fortunately, you don't have to choose between the two. You can (and should) read them both!
A Graphic Documentary, Not a Comic Book.......2005-04-04
A tremendous achievement. As he did with the Pulitzer-award deserving "Palestine," Sacco again journeys into a people's culture and history with an unerring eye and ear. This time he focusses on Bosnia in the mid-1990s and he relates the horrific genocidal actions against the Muslim Bosnians in the enclave of Gorazde beautifully. This is a gem of a book that demonstrates that graphic novels (and documentaries) can pack as powerful an emotional punch as any piece hanging in a museum or exhibited in a thetaer. Bravo!

Book Description
Joe Sacco's books offer both sharp insight into the complexities of global politics and extraordinary glimpses of the everyday people who live in a war zones. He has been favorably compared with Pulitzer-Prize winner Art Spiegelman for his ability to brilliantly navigate such socially and politically-sensitive subject matter within the comic book medium. In 1995, just prior to the Dayton Peace Accord, Sacco spent four months in Sarajevo and its surrounding areas. There he began his book Safe Area: Gorazde, a staggering and fierce condemnation of the political impotence and badly planned UN operations during the Bosnian conflict.

Book Description
The fifth edition of Thermodynamic and Transport Properties of Fluids incorporates two new tables: other material is being retained essentially as in the fourth edition, although tables beyond p.11 will be on different pages. The new tables are as follows: Data of Refrigerant 134a (tetrafluoroethane - CH2F-CF3) are being added because this refrigerant is environmentally more acceptable than Refrigerant 12 which it replaces. The table of R12 is being retained, however, because R12 will survive in much equipment for a long time. At present it is still uncertain whether R134a is a medium-term substitute, or will be used for much longer than a decade.Figure 15.11 from Engineering Thermodynamics, Work and Heat Transfer (Rogers & Mayhew, Longman 1992) is being included. The table contains, for selected substances, molar enthalpies and molar Gibbs functions of formation, and Equilibrium constants of formation, as well as molar heat capacities and absolute entropies.
