Book Description
This work examines the process of development financing through a comparison between some of the less-well-developed Caribbean countries and the More-Developed Commonwealth Caribbean countries of Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago. Hope analyzes the ways in which development financing has been undertaken in the Caribbean countries and draws conclusions about the growth process in general. He focuses primarily on analyzing the available data from the less and more developed Caribbean countries. He also examines the successes and failures of Caribbean development efforts and makes projections for the future.
Book Description
Written by two highly respected economists and educators, the book uses the
Stories, Graphs, and Equations approach to make economic concepts accessible and relevant to readers with various learning styles. It is known for its unified and logical structure, lively writing style, and clear explanations. Chapter topics include the scope and method of economics; the economic problem: scarcity and choice; demand, supply, and market equilibrium; household behavior and consumer choice; short- and long-run costs and output decisions; input demand; general equilibrium and the efficiency of perfect competition; monopoly and antitrust policy; monopolistic competition and oligopoly; income distribution and poverty; international trade, comparative advantage, and protectionism; and economic growth in developing and transitional economies. For individuals who want to better understand the fundamentals of microeconomics.
Customer Reviews:
Principles Of Microeconomics.......2004-03-05
This book helps me alot in my jop and in my life.
About the mathematics used in the book.......2000-04-14
Mathematics is used broadly in the book but limited to simple algebra, i.e., no calculus is used. So the level thus is appropriate for an introductory economics class.
Reading level of the book.......2000-04-14
The text is of medium reading level, although sometimes the extensive introduction to terms is unavoidable in introductory texts. That is to say, we can find pages with five or six terms crowded together, but that's what happens to almost every introductory textbook and generally expected when you touch a new subject at the first time.
General Orientation of the book.......2000-04-14
The general orientation of the book is theory with applications, and the authors seem to emphasize the real-world application a lot.
More international materials.......2000-04-14
As the economy goes global, we'd tell our students more about what's going on around the world. In the last part, International Economics, the authors not only address the traditional topics in international trade but cover the economic growth in developing nations, transition economics, and alternative economic systems as well.
But for some unknown reason, under the topic of "a new world trade agreement: GATT and the final act", the authors failed to mention the WTO which came into existence on 1 January 1995 as a fruit of Uruguay Round negotiations (1986-94).

Customer Reviews:
Beatles at your Fingertips.......2007-06-08
If you are familiar with the Rough Guide concept, you know that this series is laid out to give you a little of everything you need to know about a specific subject. You get the bios of the band-mates, the history, a section on their greatest songs, a discography, and some really interesting sections on things like places mentioned in the songs, candidates for the title of 'The Fifth Beatle', other key players in the Beatles lore, songs that never were, and so forth. This is a fun little book to read and refer to. The particular edition I got was British, so the album tracks were listed as they were released in Britain rather than the States, but there was a shorter American discography with tracks near the back.
If you are looking to learn more about the Beatles, this is a good place to start. Interesting facts, good pictures, a ready reference.
Recommended.
Excellent Beatle Shopping List.......2007-02-25
An excellent shopping list of Beatle songs and information about the World's Greatest Band, Ingham provides a powerhouse of information. This is a delightful "pre-primer" of the Beatles' lives.
This power packed book delves into the Beatles' history as a group and as individuals and does an exemplary job of providing information about their solo careers and people in their lives. For those wanting a "quick fix" of information and a neatly sequenced package, this book is for you. Readers get Ingham's 50 "Essential Beatle songs;" movie list and art these talented men created. Readers also stroll down the Beatles' magical mystery tour of landmarks in their lives. Laughs abound with Ingham's list of possible "Fifth Beatle;" in early 1964 DJ Murray the K was humorously awarded this title.
Ingham is an artist in the truest sense of the word. He combines his skills in music and drama in his presentation of facts. This book will also prove helpful to people looking for Beatle music to purchase by presenting the list of songs. For those who are just coming into the Beatles and for the burgeoning fan wanting information about the Beatles, then this is the book for you.
Everything You Wanted to Know About the Beatles in Just 325 Pages! Well, Almost. .......2006-10-28
Intended as a one-stop shopping guide to the Beatles, Chris Ingham packs a lot of info on the Beatles into this small (7"x7") package. Ingham's book, in this 2nd edition, can't claim to be definitive but it is a good primer on the life and times of John, Paul, George and Ringo.
As with other books in the ROUGH GUIDE series, this book casts its net wide, encompassing the history of the Beatles including their solo years, many of their "friends and lovers," the 50 Beatle songs Ingham considers essential, the movies they made, the books and artwork they created, Beatle haunts and landmarks, candidates for the 'Fifth Beatle' title, and so on. It's a very interesting, informative and often insightful guide. Exhaustive, no; entertaining, yes!
Ingham is a triple threat - author, musician and drama teacher. Occasionally he forgets that not everyone shares his expertise and you wade through sentences like: "..their tightly scripted ensemble scenes (in 'Hard Day's Night') generated an attractive, intriguingly intimate exclusivity..." or "...the diminished chord (darker than a minor chord with a flat fifth and double flat seventh as well as a flat third) dominates 'Blue Jay Way'..."
Given its built-in limitations, Ingham's book is a good buy, a broadbrush yet incisive guide to the Beatles.
***
I question the inclusion of 'Free as a Bird' in his list of 50 essential Beatle songs. I've always considered that song a triumph of technology over taste. But it's Ingham's book and everyone's entitled to their opinion so the book got five stars.
Great Book!.......2005-01-28
This book is wonderful, Chris Ingham did a great job gathering all the facts. The opening section is my favourite, it has all the facts you want to know from The Beatles -- Though I would liked to see more about the breakup and why they stopped touring. Another great section is The Canon - Ingham covered amazingly well the 50 essential songs (not the best, the essential).
Buy the book if you like The Beatles ... You won't regret it!
THE LONG & WINDING ROAD.......2004-10-07
...that leads you to the Beatles!
This is a truly delightful book replete with information covering the inception of the group in 1957 until George Harrison's untimely death in 2001. Fans and people just becoming familiar with the Beatles will be captivated by the way the subject matter is presented.
All in all, a rave review. I love it!

The material is excellent and needed .Great book !!!!!.......1999-05-31
These authors have provided a rare and fresh look at the way we view African American teenagers. The assumptions many of us make about they way in which these teenagers view their purpose are completly unjustified, The book outlines how the teenagers form their thoughts and provides constructive methods of response in order to get the results we want from this group, we are beginning to fear. The theory oultined in the book has allowed me to work with families and help them to understand their children. We need to offer these authors a thanks from the entire profession of social work
This book is a must read !!!!.......1999-05-26
This book is a must read for anyone parenting or working with african american teenagers. This is new cutting edge theory and easy reading!!

Customer Reviews:
A little dated, but still great for 16-bit development.......2002-04-12
This is a great book, or I should say WAS a great book. While the information is still 100% applicable if you are still writing code for a 16-bit operating system (DOS), or writing your own operating system, much of the information becomes somewhat useless when applied to 32-bit operating systems (Windows 2000, Linux).
Still, when writing low-level code it is still a useful reference, one of the few out there.
Gilluwe includes source code samples, and is one of the most comprehensive books on the PC architecture.
Unfortunately, this book is now somewhat dated. The BIOS is no longer the de-facto method of controlling the hardware, and is a big headache under 32 bit protected operating systems (Linux, Windows 2000, etc). Newer features, like PCI configuration space, NVRAM, BIOS 32 directory services, DMI and SMBIOS are not covered.
The definitive guide for legacy PC system info.......2002-03-17
This is the most thorough technical book I've ever read, on a subject only glanced at in other books. You will find every detail about legacy PC hardware and low-level programming for these systems in this book, and it is well organized for low-level system programmers.
PC hardware areas are each given a chapter with an introduction explaining the history and workings of the physical hardware, followed by interrupt and port programming details. There are also chapters devoted solely to the interrupt vector table and BIOS data areas that list all software services, and refer to the other chapters for more details...you can get a good overview of a particular area of PC hardware, or you can just as easily find the particulars of any interrupt service, port usage or BIOS data area entry. Invaluable for low-level programmers!
Excellent for low-level programming.......2000-07-17
This book provides excellent information on hardware ports, CMOS, disk and video systems. It explains the differences between versions, lists known bugs and workarounds and even comes with functioning code examples. Some of the programming leaves a little to be desired, though. :) But if you're a good assembly programmer you'll understand it.
Overall it is an excellent book and a must have for anyone wanting direct hardware-level access (without the save-haven "buffer" provided through an API). This book is for real programmers only. Programmers who want to work at the machine level. It is, quite simply, the most comprehensive book I've found. A one-stop shop for information.
The only problem I found is that this book is slightly dated, originally published in 1996 or 1997. Newer features are not included.
Through Book.......2000-03-30
This book is a great book. It covers low level details from the Hard Disk Controller to understanding of the DMA chip. This is a good book for systems programmers. This is my new programming bible.
This book is invaluable........1999-08-29
This book, though having some misprints (minor), is invaluable for those willing to squease every last drop from their PC when writing low-level programs.

Book Description
In December 1981 soldiers of the Salvadoran Army's select, American-trained Atlacatl Battalion entered the village of El Mozote, where they murdered hundreds of men, women, and children, often by decapitation. Although reports of the massacre -- and photographs of its victims -- appeared in the United States, the Reagan administration quickly dismissed them as propaganda. In the end, El Mozote was forgotten. The war in El Salvador continued, with American funding.
When Mark Danner's reconstruction of these events first appeared in The New Yorker, it sent shock waves through the news media and the American foreign-policy establishment. Now Danner has expanded his report into a brilliant book, adding new material as well as the actual sources. He has produced a masterpiece of scrupulous investigative journalism that is also a testament to the forgotten victims of a neglected theater of the cold war.
Customer Reviews:
Highly Recommended.......2007-05-20
This is probably one of the best books I've read in a while. I had to read it for a history class at Furman University, but it's one I definitley would have read on my own as well. It tells a heart-wrenching story, but gives the facts as they are. Not necessarily an easy story to hear, but one that I feel everyone should know about. It's fairly easy to read and isn't too history-like (a lot of facts, no emotion, confusing to follow). I recommend this book for anyone willing to learn about Latin America, and especially the part that the US plays in allowing things like this to happen.
Very good book, so-so prose.......2005-07-25
I read The Massacre at El Mozote immediately after finishing Mark Bowden's Killing Pablo (I was clearly in the mood, at the time, for books revolving around U.S. military/political affairs in Latin America). I absolutely loved Bowden's book but only liked Danner's. I found the prose in El Mozote to be rather dense and fleshy, especially in the first 30 or so pages of the book. Danner's overuse of comma-offset clauses tends to muddle his sentences. But once he cut to the chase, it was much easier to follow along and really get into the action. Overall, it was an eye-opening read, well researched and presented. I really do think that reading Killing Pablo immediately prior to picking up El Mozote colored my opinion tremendously, since I literally was enthralled by Bowden's fast-paced, detailed, page-turning prose and thus somewhat put off by Danner's paragraphs-long sentences.
A lesson for our times.......2004-03-15
Mark Danner's short book, The Massacre at El Mozote, is an extremely powerful depiction of not only what can go wrong with US foreign policy, but of the lengths politicians will go through to convince us that what they are doing is, in fact, right. The thoroughness and integrity of Danner's investigation cannot be disputed; on top of that, he is very adept at leaving readers to draw their own conclusions. The book may be the Hiroshima of our times.
While I agree with earlier reviewers, especially the point that what appears to be propaganda should not be immediately dismissed as such, I think the real lesson of the book is that the US, as a leader in world affairs, needs to choose its "friends" very carefully. Danner's book made me realize that while the US likes to shape Latin American policy, in point of fact the powerful "Good Neighbor" to the north is often manipulated by the very regimes it seeks to control. And as citizens of this great country, we have a hard time imagining such a thing.
The butchers of the El Salvador government, trained and financed by the US, knew that they could commit whatever atrocities they wished so long as they opposed the socialist rebels. Consequently, in December 1981, they murdered 767 people at El Mozote and in surrounding villages with impunity because they understood that the political stakes were much higher in Washington once the Reagan administration had committed itself to supporting the status quo. In its frantic attempts to dispute or to ignore the details of the massacre, the Reagan administration-which liked to portray itself as hard-line-really appears as the spineless weakling in this whole affair. Truly, the "tail wagged the dog."
This is an important lesson to bear in mind as the US conducts a new war on terrorism (the Communists having been vanquished years ago). Is our country going to find itself supporting human rights abusers once again because our leaders are afraid of political fallout, by appearing to be weak on combating terrorism or inept at finding WMDs? Human rights--and especially the right to life itself--should be the criteria our government considers when it decides to throw its support behind a foreign government.
propaganda ... is sometimes true.......2001-04-05
Mark Danner has written a marvelously researched and page-turning account of one of the larger attrocities in Central America committed by U.S. trained, supervised and funded armies. After the American War in Vietnam, the U.S. made a strategic decision to pay the locals to do our fighting. In other words, a proxy war. Lieutenant Colonel Domingo Monterrosa, the crafty, spirited and charismatic officer who commanded the Salvadoran forces at El Mozote, trained in Panama at the U.S. training installation later moved to Ft. Benning, Georgia and named the School of the Americas. Graduates of the SOA have been implicated in the murders of thousands of civilians, Archbishop Romero and American nuns and priests.
What I found most interesting, contrary to my previous opinion, is that the Ambassador and at least several American officials in San Salvador believed something terrible had happened in El Mozote. Without access to the site - it had been recaptured by the FMLN rebels - they could prove nothing. Nevertheless, they attempted to communicate their fears to Washington. Washington decided not to believe. Instead, the New York Times recalled one of the reporters who had been to the site at FMLN invitation and had seen the bodies. The story seemed unbelievable.
The story was, of course, Communist propaganda and therefore not to be believed. Well, yes, the FMLN did broadcast the story with the intent of influencing Salvadorans and Americans. It was propaganda. It was also true.
There is a parallel in U.S. history. (There may be more than one.) During the 1920's and 30's and even later, the American and European press was rife with reports of mass murders in the Soviet Union. The press reporting these attrocities had for years been reporting and editorializing against the Soviet threat and Communist revolution, many times exaggerating or being more than a little creative. They had also supported the American-British-French invasion of the Soviet Union after WWI. Liberals regarded these sources as unreliable and untrustworthy, and continued to defend Stalin. The liberals were right, of course, just as the Reagan Administration was right: the reports were propaganda. The reports were also true.
Sometimes the enemy is right. We should take care to listen.
Who gives the US the right to interfere in another country?.......1999-05-14
What a shame it would have been to the writers of the American constitution to see the policy that the US took in El Salvador and the Latin American region. How could a country with the ideals of liberty and freedom of oppression support a government whose army killed and cruelly repressed its innocent inhabitants? I was a young girl when El Mozote massacre occurred but I remember the fear that infused every sector of society. Where was the liberty that the US was promoting if the only emotion allowed in the population was fear? Dissent, protest even ideological differences were brutally repressed! Mark Danner is an excellent journalist and a corageous human being by bringing to the attention of the American society the barbarism committed with the funding and support of the US government. Danner tells the truth about events and violations of basic human rights by the US. supported Salvadorean regime. Danner wins 10 out of five stars in my rankings.

Morazan: Blood stain from yesterday........2000-04-01
I met Leigh Binford in Dec 1994 during the burial of the 143 children and 2 adults that were sent back for the formal burial at El Mozote. Binfords analysis is more in depth than Danners dramatic book as far as cultural background and historical development of El Mozote and the state of Morazan in general. I currently am living in San salvador and right now they (Medicina Legal Forensics) are currently exhuming massacre remains near San Vicente.
Too bad the whole worlds attention is so Pavlov to the Medias bidding to current events while the past -and current- U.S. Involvement in El Salvador is swept under the rug and hid behind low intensity conflict style blaming. "Oh its their fault" Yeah, we trained them, and knew it was going on all the time. Right NOW we are VERY involved in COLOMBIA, and everybody is just sitting and browsing the net with starbucks coffee., Lets get off our duffs and find out what's going on. "Oh, but wait.. I have to see if My plastic Horses have sold on Ebay." Good work LEIGH!

From the supplier: Reporters Raymond Bonner and Alma Guillermoprieto of the New York Times and the Washington Post, respectively, covered the 1981 El Salvadoran massacre of civilians in the village of El Mozote. They were aided by a photojournalist and the testimony of survivors. However, the Reagan administration, which was lobbying Congress for financial support of El Salvador's government, and the conservative press attacked and discredited the journalists' claims. The careers of the journalists suffered and others feared for their careers as well. Late in 1992, additional evidence surfaced which vindicated the journalists.

Book Description
The Field and the Forge offers an innovative approach to the pre-industrial history of Europe and the Mediterranean basin from Roman times through to the Industrial Revolution. This wide-ranging analysis demonstrates how technology changed the scope of state and empire building, and explores
why this scope was realized in the ancient world rather than the medieval west. This work not only considers the who and what of history, but provides a clear demonstration of why things happened.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful account of pre-Industrial resource realities.......2003-10-13
Professor John Landers tackles a question that we all have in the back of our minds: what was life like when we only had the muscle power of humans and draft animals to aid our productivity? The answers--in terms of economy, warfare, and the spacial constraints on activities--are spelled out in this thought-provoking research. Along with description and analysis, the author provides statistics on a variety of issues, such as the trade shipping time across the Mediterranean between various ports, the spacial constraints of armies, and many other topics. Professor Landers is a noted author on population, who in this book examines "time, space, and population" and their connections to the "organic" resources used prior to the Industrial Revolution.
I found the book enjoyable to read and instructional to boot. While the story is focused on Western Europe, history buffs who enjoy economics and warfare will find this a worthwhile read.

A High School Math Teacher's Point of View.......2002-10-19
This is an excellent book. Its lab-style approach with practical / tangible sets of data coupled with on-target follow-up questions makes this a wonderful book to teach and learn from. This version of the textbook focuses on using a TI-83 calculator to organize, display and analyze data in most of the problems. Managing the data lists for the TI-83 calculators in class can be difficult. I recommend that you ... download the program files that Al Coons put together. He placed all the individual data lists for each problem into programs. This makes it easy to manage and transfer these files to other calculators. Especially between TI-83+ and TI-83 calculators. Solutions to the "Activities" problems and various supplementary materials can be downloaded.... I recommend using Adobe Acrobat to download the "Activities" solutions. I made the mistake of using an old web-browser and wasted a whole summer copying and pasting. This may sound obvious, but it must be stressed....Answer all of the problems that you plan to work on in class or assign for homework prior to the actual class. Some problems require advance preparation or data collected from previous class activity problems. You need to find this out before walking into a classroom. This is the first time that I've taught an AP-Statistics course and the approach of this book takes a little getting used to. I'm having a ball! I rely heavily upon this book and the Barron's AP-Statistics study guide. Good Luck. It's a great book!
Complicated but easy to understand........1999-10-22
I read this book during my senior AP Bio class. My Biology teacher yelled at me for reading it during her class. So I left, because I didn't want to be yelled at. I then received a detention. Then I couldn't do my statistics homework and I failed the class. The book was stimulating if somewhat bland. I am writing this in a Starbucks in Toronto.
Really easy to understand. Great way to explore your TI-83........1999-05-11
I used this book in my AP Statistics class my senior year of high school. The Workshop Statistics book was really easy to follow and understand. I have always had a hard time with math, but when I used this book, I picked up on the concepts quicker. The only problem I had with this book is the fact that explanations of the formulas and procedures were not expained as clearly as I would have liked. This book is also a great way to orient yourself with your TI-83 scientific calculator (Texas Instraments).

Great resource.......2003-09-06
I've been building my library of wildlife gardening books and this one is definitely an integral part of it. One thing I especially like is the tables - for example there's one on common backyard insects and spiders - it tells what they are (e.g. crickets) then what their needs are (e.g. sunny locationwith loose cover) and then what's so neat about them (e.g. chorus on warm summer evenings). The book is broken out into sections such as Gardens for butterflies and bugs, gardens for small mammals, reptiles and amphibians; and then there are specific seasonal gardens for birds. There's even a chapter on wildlife for apartment dwellers. There are plans for building bird houses, setting up ponds etc. Very complete and lots of good clear writing.
Great Wildlife Information.......2000-06-24
This book "Backyard Wildlife-A Guide For Nature Lovers" is an excellent resource book on bringing, and conservating for wildlife. From birds to frogs, and even plants.
This is a great book if you love nature, and want to give wildlife a place eat and live. This is a really great book.
