too many mistakes.......2006-10-11
I agree with some of the other reviews. There is some helpful information in
this book but it's nothing which can't be found elsewhere.
It might be worth reading but I suggest skipping the
examples since they contain too many errors, and aren't
spaced or documented well enough for easy understanding and debugging.
Not too helpful, kind of boring........2006-10-06
I was really excited when I read the table of contents of this book, as I thought it was going to talk about everything I wanted to know. It turned out that it was really boring. I gave it a good try, and forced myself to push through chapter after chapter. I read, but skipped many of the experiments, because they were set up to fail, to show you how something Couldn't be done. For example, one "experiment" on the construction of a robot's frame, was glueing pipe cleaners as joints between 2 tubes of cardboard. It went on to build a whole cardboard tube man, just to show it wouldn't stand up. Needless to say, I'm glad I didn't spend my day constructing that, as I would not have learned much about robotics. I couldn't tell if this was for kids, because it got somewhat complicated. I did buy it in a University bookstore though.
The hardest part of the whole thing, was buying all the parts. Some of them are listed in a way that nobody else lists them, and decoding them took a while. It also, unfortunately, like many robotics books, asks you to spend quite a bit of money on parts. This book pretty much just got so boring, that I began to question if it would actually explain the things that it claimed it would. I ended up giving up on it, and it set me back a bit on my robot experiments, just because I was so bored by it. It also set me back a bit of money for parts.
If you are looking for something to explain things in a fun, understandable, and productive way, look elsewhere.
Didn't get a PCB Board.......2006-10-01
It's hard to give an objective review, as I didn't get the PCB Board with this book. I emailed McGraw-Hill, going to see why it didn't have one. If I can't get any help there, I'm going to contact Amazon about this....
Update: I got a response back from McGraw-Hill, these are no longer going to come packed with a PCB board. They said something about a CDRom, but I didn't get one with my book. This is really uncool, as most of the experiments are predicated on having that PCB. So, I would urge anyone who was really considering this to perform the experiments to pass it up. I would not recommend this book to anyone!
A mixed bag.......2006-06-10
The book doesn't as much explain how to build a robot as it explains robots by their building blocks; electronics, microcontrollers, sensors, motors etc.
This is both the book's greatest strength and its greatest weakness; if you take the time and effort to go through each example, you will gain a solid understanding of electronics; understanding you need to have in order to design and build (as opposed to assemble one from a kit) a robot.
The drawback is that it is time-consuming to go through all the experiments, and it is not always obvious why a given experiment is relevant to robotics. Also, unless you already have drawers full of electronics components and tools, it's going to be quite expensive to buy everything you need -- about $150.
Unfortunately, the author didn't provide a good parts list for the book, so unless you buy a kit with all the components (see link that another reviewer provided), you'll probably need to order parts from several sources.
It is not clear what audience the author is writing for; one chapter may be very basic and simple, while the next is very advanced.
Finally, the book would have benefited from a more thorough proof-reading before going to press; there are some annoying typos and errors in circuit schematics.
Misleading title.......2006-05-10
This author has the ability to obscure even the simplest concepts.Perhaps it is intentional, sort of a puzzle book where you have to work so much more (and spend so much more) to get anything done. Calling this book 123 robotics experiments is misleading at best. More than half of the book deals with textbook homework of the dullest kind and generally assumes that the user understands terms or concepts that have not been previously introduced and which only a seasoned engineer would know what they mean.
You will learn, enjoy and save a lot more if you get the BASIC Stamp Discovery Kit which is not only a superb introduction to practical robotics but it also includes all you need to succeed.

Talk of Love: How Culture Matters
ASIN: 0520208781 |
Book Description
This monumental study demonstrates the power of culture to define the meaning of labor. Drawing on massive archival evidence from Britain and Germany, as well as historical evidence from France and Italy, The Fabrication of Labor shows how the very nature of labor as a commodity differed fundamentally in different national contexts. A detailed comparative study of German and British wool textile mills reveals a basic difference in the way labor was understood, even though these industries developed in the same period, used similar machines, and competed in similar markets. These divergent definitions of the essential character of labor as a commodity influenced the entire industrial phenomenon, affecting experiences of industrial work, methods of remuneration, disciplinary techniques, forms of collective action, and even industrial architecture. Starting from a rigorous analysis of detailed archival materials, this study broadens out to analyze the contrasting developmental pathways to wage labor in Western Europe and offers a startling reinterpretation of theories of political economy put forward by Adam Smith and Karl Marx. In his brilliant cross-national study, Richard Biernacki profoundly reorients the analysis of how culture constitutes the very categories of economic life.

A lighthearted yet insightful look at the tribal culture of the spotty, intimidating youths on the streets of new millennium Britain, exposing this culture of ignorance that forms Britain’s new ruling class.

A bit off frivilous fun..........2005-07-05
...not so much a book as comic come rag mag in which the British under class are the target of abuse. The tracksuited, designer trainered, burberry capped and handbagged, gold jewellry ladened CHAVS and CHAVETTES. The British equivalant of "Poor white trash or Trailer Trash".
A note of caution however, I would be the last to suggest such books should not exsist as a bit of frivilious fun but this kind of "Branding" and "Class marking" literature could be dangerous stuff in the wrong hands as it is treading a fine line between fun and hatred.

DON'T FEAR TO BE A READER.......2005-07-03
Want to learn the hottest licks from your favorite BOC song (or at least decipher some of it's lyrics)? Well look no further as Hal Leonard (as transcribed by Kenn Chipkin) serves up an even dozen of Cult's classic tracks (with notes and TAB). It was great to have this on hand as I was reading through Martin Popoff's Blue Oyster Cult:Secrets Revealed! to put the lyrics in their proper context. A must have for any true BOC fan (player and non-player alike). Don't fear to be a reader.
Very good...I guess.......2005-06-09
Buck Dharma is truly an incredible guitarist. This book is the guitar tablature from their early 90s release Cult Classics, re-workings of some of the best songs. I feel that the tabs are accurate, but Buck's style is som complex I can't really tell if this is how Buck plays it. Nevertheless its a good tool to study his style which is more off-the-wall than most guitarists may realise. The tab is clear and concise but the style is complex and tough to pull off for even good guitarist. A good tool. But beware most will not easily "cop" Buck's solos like other guitarists featured in guitar rags. To me this makes it even better. I'm still today trying to play the solos in "Buck's Boogie" a quarter as smoothly as the master plays them. It's perplexing, but compelling.
HOT AND COLD.......2001-03-04
I WISH I WERE IN CHARGE OF MAKING THIS CD. I WOULD REPLACE THE REAPER AND GODZILLA'S TV MIX WITH MAYBE "WINGS WETTED DOWN" OR "SEVEN SCREAMING DIZBUSTERS." OTHERWISE THIS CD IS JUST FINE. THE NEWLY RECORDED BLUE OYSTER CULT GEMS ARE REALLY GOOD, ESPECIALLY "ODed ON LIFE ITSELF."
Classic Metal at its best!.......2000-05-08
This is a really wonderful addition to anyone's Guitar Tab collection. A collection of BOC's best songs are placed in an easy to read format for all guitarists. Fans and non-fans alike will enjoy this book which is tabbed out surprisingly well in comparison to some of the other BOC books I've seen. Highly recommended, although I caution some of the guitar work is quite complex. May not be suitable for the beginner.

Book Description
What is it about vampires that fascinates the human imagination? Blood Obsession closely scrutinizes theories of Sigmund Freud and Tzvetan Todorov and arrives at a model of the vampire as the perfect representative of genre for a variety of reasons-the vampire figure appeals to its audience because of an interdependency of looplike mental and narrative structures that lure both reader and writer incessantly back to the genre. At the same time, this book provides the reader with a thorough survey of literary and filmic vampires in both adult and juvenile fictions. Lastly, it blends the realms of legal and literary history by highlighting the changes the image of the serial killer, a close relative of the vampire, underwent at the end of the twentieth century. Blood Obsession is a highly enlightening study for the general reader as well as for students of film, literature, and popular culture.

Book Description
This new edition of the successful calendars book expands the treatment of the previous edition to new calendar variants. It frames the calendars of the world in a completely algorithmic form. The authors describe fourteen calendars and how they relate to one another: the present civil calendar (Gregorian), the recent ISO commercial calendar, the old civil calendar (Julian), the Coptic and (virtually identical) Ethiopic calendars, the Islamic (Moslem) calendar; the Baha'i, the Hebrew (Jewish) calendar, the Mayan calendars, the French Revolutionary calendar, the Chinese calendar, and both the old (mean) and new (true) Hindu (Indian) calendars. Easy conversion among these calendars is a by-product of the approach, as is the determination of secular and religious holidays. Calendrical Calculations makes accurate calendrical algorithms readily available for computer use with LISP and Java code for all the algorithms included on CD, and updates available on the Web.
Download Description
This new edition of the successful calendars book is being published at the turn of the millennium and expands the treatment of the previous edition to new calendars and variants. As interest grows in the impact of seemingly arbitrary calendrical systems upon our daily lives, this book frames the world in a completely algorithmic form. The book gives a description of twenty-five calendars and how they relate to one another: the Gregorian (current civil), ISO (International Organization for Standardization), Egyptian (and nearly identical Armenian), Julian (old civil), Coptic, Ethiopic, Islamic (Moslem), modern Persian (both astronomical and arithmetic forms), Baha'i (both present and future forms), Hebrew (Jewish), Mayan (long count, haab, and tzolkin), Balinese Pawukon, French Revolutionary (both astronomical and arithmetic forms), Chinese (and nearly identical Japanese), old Hindu (solar and lunisolar), and modern Hindu (solar and lunisolar). Easy conversion among these calendars is a by-product of the approach, as is the determination of secular and religious holidays. Calendrical Calculations makes accurate calendrical algorithms readily available for computer use with LISP, Mathematica, and Java code for all the algorithms included on the CD, and updates are available on the Web. This book will be a valuable resource for working programmers as well as a fount of useful algorithmic tools for computer scientists. In addition, the lay reader will find the historical setting and general calendar descriptions of great interest.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting, but difficult to decipher.......2007-09-16
I bought this book, considering it the foremost authority on the subject of calendars and algorithms. While it does do an excellent job of explaining the calendars, and has good algorithms and is logical, a number of points I think should be dealt with, were not.
Firstly, lisp code, is not universal. I found it hard to adapt to lisp, and I have had to resort to the Java code which I am more familiar. I think the authors should have chosen non-specific coding routines, and shown more mathematical, intuitive ways of presenting the information. The presentation of the algorithms is somewhat cumbersome - especially the definitions.
Secondly, I deal with one calendar only, and my interest lies really, mainly with the Hebrew Calendar. I was disappointed that I had to refer to the Coptic Calendar for obtaining data for the Hebrew Calendar. It means I have to have code from both calendars, and I have to figure out what details I need from one system to the other. I would have liked to see each calendar dealt with as a totality in of itself.
Thirdly, The errata list is too long. The authors should present the corrections without all the added information (however useful). I'm not prepared to sift through a hundred pages looking for mistakes (especially minor ones), however interesting the added material maybe. It should be separately listed so I can easily refer to the critical mistakes if need be. I did note that there were very few critical mistakes.
Fourthly I felt the presentation of the algorithms were difficult to comprehend at first glance. Someone who is new to the field of algorithms, and presentation mathematically would find difficult to master. Was it not possible to simply state a definition and provide algorithmic reference, as opposed to viewing the function, knowing what it does, but not actually seeing the internal details of that function is very difficult to process.
I felt the reference system was not clear. I could not fathom why at some stages the authors did not mention their sources on a particular topic (with a proper endnote reference), in the text itself, and at other times, there was adequate references to the end notes. There was some confusion I had on whether the numbers were referring to footnotes, endnotes or actual numbers.
Otherwise it was a good summary of the overall calendars. And many points were raised and dealt with in a comprehensive manner. I would have liked an algorithm to process the Parshios (Torah Readings) for the Hebrew Calendar.
you can actually compute dates in these calendars.......2005-09-28
History books that span the Middle East and Asia often mention that calendars other than the Common Era one are in use. The Muslim, Jewish and Hindu, for example. This book gives more diversity. It also describes the Mayan, Balinese, Bahai, Persian and Chinese calendars. It even mentions a calendar in vogue in France during their Revolution. While, when considering the Common Era calendar, the book shows how it differs from various Christian ones, like the Ethiopic and Coptic.
Though what really distinguishes the book is how it centralises a low of practical detail about each calendar. Most history books are written for a general audience. But this book is suitable for an astronomer or anyone else, who actually needs to implement one of those calendars. Very specialised text. Quite possibly addressing an unfilled niche.
Anonymous's criticisms baseless.......2004-10-27
The previous review criticizes us for having a lengthy document reporting errata--but most of that document is not errata at all, but notes with extra material! C.U.P. introduced 10 spots where some lines were lost in the 2nd printing; when that was discovered they withdrew the printing and filled all orders with the hardback first printing.
Perhaps "anonymous" would have been happier if we did not share the details of errors with readers, but we feel it is in the reader's interest to have the errata open to public.
Errata for this edition/pringing is 71 pages long.......2004-10-14
The 2001 printing of this book is full of errors. The author's errata list is 71 pages long. Get the 2nd printing: paperback with updated CDROM. I'm going to be returning mine.
Great for calendars - Legal issues in using code.......2004-03-23
I highly recommend the book if you are interested in calendars as a hobby. If you are using this book for a project I suggest you look at this soley as a reference, since you will have to look elsewhere to have something you can use. The bibliography included is a good source.
The details and discussions of how they approach problems like the visibility of sunset are amazing and really opened my eyes to the difficulties of creating an accurate calendar under different systems. This book covers everything I could think of and quite a few ideas I would never consider.
I would give it 5 stars, except that the code and algorythms provided in the book are copyrighted and can not be used without explicit permission of the authors. I contacted the authors for a project I had, but it was determined that I could not use their algorithms since I intended to release under GNU license.

Death In The Air.......2006-08-05
This is an essential primer for those who question the powers that be. It clearly shows the bad intentions of the present corrupt regime that is in power and the unbounded evil that underlies it residing in "science", "industry", "religion" and "education".A wide view of the picture, and very factual.
Death in the Air.......2002-10-17
How many have a feeling that something is wrong? Something that you just can't put your finger on, but you know something is wrong.
Your sick, your spouse is sick, your kids have behavioral problems or they are sick, a close relative or friend is sick. Everyone knows someone with cancer and if your over 40 you cannot remember knowing anyone sick or having cancer when you were a kid.
What if someone was to offer proof that there is something wrong and there is a reason why we are all sick?
This book will stop you in your tracks and (if your not careful) make you think. Finally an explanation, so interesting and compelling I couldn't put it down. Didn't (and still don't) want to believe that something this sinister is occurring.
With the tenacity of a trained researcher, Dr. Horowitz has carefully constructed a framework of evidence, which, if only taken half seriously, provides plausible reasons surrounding the state of our world and health.
High Wheat-to-Chaff Ratio.......2002-08-06
I recommend this book only with these caveats. Regardless of Horowitz's qualifications and meticulous references, this is still conspiracy lit, backed up by a mixture of conspiracy and mainstream sources. The reader can glean a lot of truth from this book about the man-made health hazards out there, but to swallow it all as true would not be smart. Unless Horowitz takes critical thinking more seriously, he'll never reach a wider audience. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. One example: the chapter on Bible code numerology. That kind of flakiness is what keeps conspiracy theory on the fringes.
Strong Medicine by Dr. Horowitz.......2002-03-19
Writers who posit conspiracy theories are always fighting an
uphill battle, because at least in the US most people are satisfied
with their lives and don't really want to know the truth. After all,
it might make them question their reality, it might knock them a bit
out of their comfort zones. You can hear them saying, "why, that can't
be possible, these kinds of crimes couldn't be covered up." Thus
conspiracy researchers have to present an enormous amount of documentation
to be given any credibility at all. Yet once again, Dr.Horowitz is more
than up to this challenge.
Dr. Horowitz has contended for years that the main agenda of the
globalists, the New World Order crowd, is to reduce the population of
the planet by as much as 50%, and make money off of it at the same time.
Referring to fellow conspiracy researcher David Icke, Horowitz discusses
the NWO agenda in terms of the Hegelian dialectic, which is the
thesis/anti-thesis/synthesis accounting for history's evolution. In
today's world this is better termed "problem-reaction-solution." That is,
the people in power create a problem, which causes the public to demand
action, at which point the NWO rolls out their already conceived
"solution."
The sub-title of "Death In The Air" provides a good foundation
to summarize this long, but highly readable, incredibly well-documented
book: "Globalism, Terrorism, & Toxic Warfare." The globalists are of
course the money masters - Dr. Horowitz focuses on the Rockefellers,
who have clearly wielded enormous power, owning many of the largest
oil companies, but also either serving in government themselves, or
putting cronies like Henry Kissinger into the seats of power in both
government and business.
As for terrorism, Dr. Horowitz provides numerous examples of
intentional testing of chemical and biological substances on peoples
throughout the world. He always names names, and provides precise
dates and locations. For example, on p. 81 he discusses how the
CIA-funded Evergreen Helicopters sprayed millions of gallons of
chemicals both in the US and abroad. This form of government-sponsored
terrorism is often directed at minorities, and many Native Americans
in Arizona became seriously ill due to these intrusuions.
Another example of terrorism (and toxic warfare) thoroughly
documented in "Death In The Air" are the two infamous CIA mind-control
projects, MKULTRA and MKNAOMI. It is widely known that former Nazis were
brought to the US, having received no punishment for their heinous crimes,
to teach US intelligence officials the techniques they learned from their
torturings.
By far the bulk of "Death In The Air" is devoted to exposing the
NWO's toxic warfare campaign, ironically often termed "non-lethal"
only because that term actually means that "only" a smaller percentage
of death than "lethal" warfare occurs! Never mind the harm done. And
what Dr. Horowitz does better than any researcher I have ever read is
that he presents the best evidence of all when trying to prove that
viruses and diseases like AIDS are no accident at all: he prints the
actual contracts and other documents in black and white (you might need
some reading glasses though!), which show as clearly as possible
that companies have been paid to create diseases! While some might
claim that these contracts are only circumstantial evidence, it is
impossible, at least for me, to believe that contracts which precede
the outbreaks of diseases are just "accidents." As well Dr. Horowitz
often provides excellent links between documentation and the actual
onset of medical disasters.
I am only scratching the surface of the vast wealth of topics
discussed in "Death In The Air." Others worth mentioning are HAARP
and other electromagetic devices, Tesla technologies, West Nile Virus,
vaccinations, and DNA as a frequency generator itself. I do not totally
agree with Dr. Horowitz's tying the NWO to the Biblical apocalypse, but
I must admit that his discussion of vaccinations, Kissinger, and 666,
is credible.
I more than highly recommend this very clear, well-written,
amazing compilation!
AMERICA, stop waving the flag and wake up!.......2002-02-02
The author is a Harvard grad, not a lunatic and his references are complete and real. This book is extremely researched and documented, both necessary to be credible considering what is discussed. The material presented is not what we are used to but cannot be denied. Things made more sense to me after reading this book, such as chemtrails, the fly sprayings in CA and the way the current government is manipulating the U.S. media following 9/11. After reading this book, I joined the NRA! America, stop having your head burried in the sand and wake up to what your government is REALLY up to before you loose your freedom to the "New World Order"

Customer Reviews:
Where's the atomic components?.......2001-01-24
I know Anderson is supposed to be one of the great thinkers in thought but I take issue with his title..If you're going to name a book Atomic Components of x, then you need to offer something resembling atomic components???? For example, physics gives us atoms, quarks, leptons, etc. Chemistry the Periodic Table of Elements...Are "memory," "knowledge representation," "performance," "learning," "the visual interface," or any of Anderson's other chapters really atomic components. These all seem to be large, general concepts rather than atomic, "unsplittable" componenentry...The book itself is worth the read for academics and the like but if you judge a book by its title, Anderson misses the mark.
A celebrated model of memory in cognitive science........1999-11-09
This book presents the latest version of ACT-R, which is at present the most elaborated and most widely applied formal model of human memory and complex cognitive performance. Anderson's ACT-R theory is the sort of theory Cognitive Science should aim at: comprehensive, compact and elegant. This book not only describes the theory, but also shows it is successful in many different domains of cognitive sience.

Book Description
Wind power is developing rapidly, both in the number of new installations and in the interest from various stakeholders including policy makers, NGOs, research scientists, industry, and a broader general public. Unlike the majority of other texts on wind power, which are written primarily for engineers or policy analysts, this book specifically targets professionals and students interested in wind power project development.
Having outlined wind power basics and explained the underlying resource and technology, the author explores the interactions between wind power and society and the main aspects of project development, including, siting, economics, and legislation.
Based on a successful Swedish edition, expanded and updated for an international market, this book will be an essential reference for professionals developing new sites, government officials and consultants reviewing related applications, and both specialists and non-specialists studying wind power project development.

Book Description
Communication within project-based environments presents special challenges. This is especially true within the construction industry. Many of the problems that develop in construction projects are a result of both the temporary and inter-disciplinary nature of project teams - each player having a different employer compounds this arrangement.
Practical guidance is provided on possible solutions to communication problems, and a number of examples and case studies are presented, especially with relation to the construction industry. Several non-typical perspectives on the process of communication are introduced, to encourage the reader to think about communication in a more innovative manner. "Thinking with diagrams," for example, is useful for those, such as architects, who work primarily with visual communication media. This can be contrasted with the "visual perception" approach, which emphasizes the rational and scientific aspects of human biology. The combination of differing perspectives illustrates the diversity of communication problems facing those working within project-based environments.
