5 out of 5 stars Finally, something to do once it's tomorrow..........2005-02-09

Once you get past all the people whingeing about "omg there are only 6 designs!!!" this calendar turns out to be a lot of fun. The designs work well; some are more challenging to fly than others, but all of them fly reasonably well (as long as you take the effort to fold them properly.) The designs range from abstract geometric shapes, to clip-art, to images that become airplane shapes when the folding is complete.

Be aware that you'll probably _need_ three hundred, because once you throw them over the cube wall into your co-workers' offices you'll never see them again. (For some reason my dog loves to go after them as well, which is hard on the planes as the paper is soluble in dog spit.)

I often have trouble convincing myself to wait until five PM before folding the plane. In fact, I'm already looking forward to getting one for 2006...

3 out of 5 stars People need to read the package and stop inferring..........2005-02-04

Everybody is bashing this calendar because of the limited number of models, but on the box it says 6 DIFFERENT MODELS. Learn to read people. The title is not 365 DIFFERENT TINY AIRPLANES! If you feel misled, you have nobody to be mad at but yourself for not reading the packaging (unless you have yet to conquer the art of reading for content). Come on now people....THINK!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Great for a young child, adults will be disappointed........2005-01-13

I'm not sure why the description of this calendar says it may be fun for the office, the average adult will be disappointed. I have to admit the "365 Tiny Paper Airplanes" is greatly misleading. Ya' get six. Yup six. Now, my six year old, whom this was purchased for, thinks this is heaven. He's happy to fold the same six over and over. It's a good learning tool to keep track of the name of the day, month, year....if you're six.
But, sorry guys, you misled us on the fun factor in the office. Couldn't you at least have found 12 different designs? You know like the twelve months of the year?

1 out of 5 stars 6 Airplanes not 365.......2005-01-11

Got this calendar for a gift, and after many years of comics I thought this would be a great change. Written by Ken Blackburn & Jeff Lammers, authors of 'the best selling WORLD RECORD PAPER AIRPLANE BOOK series, I imagined that we would have a book with every type of paper airplane imaginable. Oh how wrong I was. I got through the first week and upon looking at next realized that it was going to repeat the same 6 planes over and over again. Argh. The absolutely worst calendar ever.

1 out of 5 stars You will be hard pressed to find someone satisfied with this.......2005-01-06

I saw this calendar a few weeks ago and was excited to have a change from my usual 365 days of duct tape calendar this year. I have gotten through day 5 when I realized that all they did was reprint 6 calendars over and over again. What a rip off. Less than a week into the new year and Im bored of my calendar already. I agree with the previous review that 365 airplanes is quite a task, but these guys have written entire books on paper airplanes. They couldnt have found more than 6? Even 12 month calendars have to come up with at least 12 ideas. I plan to send an email to the creator once their website is up and running again (it probably came crashing down when everyone found out there were only six planes and flooded their server). But to everyone out there, avoid this calendar

Graham Chapman--you remember him as Brian, King Arthur, and innumerable characters from the BBC Monty Python series--died of throat cancer in 1989, yet he still manages to write a funny, nostalgic book. It's a pretty neat trick. Graham Crackers is not a sequel to A Liar's Autobiography, Chapman's cult classic. It is, however, a loose confederacy of sketches, reminiscing, and true-life escapades. Here's a memory from the filming of Life of Brian:
Let me say here that the matter of genital exposure is no particular problem to me--I am a doctor after all--but there was a problem in that we had this crowd of Tunisian extras--some 300 people posing as 600--and half of that number were women. And Muslim women are forbidden by Muslim law to see such things. It's absolutely forbidden for them to even think of viewing naughty bits. So when I flung open the shutter, half the crowd ran away screaming! That had a profound effect on my psyche. I'd like to think it was their religion...Yes, I'm sure that it was.
Python fans will love this offbeat, informal, delightfully addled book. And everyone else? Try it, you might like it.

1 out of 5 stars I Cannot Print the Title That Works Best.......2006-09-25

Honestly, how many books can a guy write while deceased? And how many glowing reviews can a guy who's profiting from these books write before he sprains his wrist? This book is a shameless pile of trash that's been bound together and sold under the worst title ever in order to make someone else money. All writers have material that they know shouldn't see the light of day. If I could go back in time, I would buy Graham a shredder.

If you want to read about Graham's life, get A Liar's Autobiography instead. At least he was still breathing at the time his name went on as one of the authors.

      1 out of 5 stars This is a disgrace........2005-08-03

As a lifelong "alternative" comedy and Python fan, I wholeheartedly agree with the reviewer who acknowledged this book as "astoundingly bad" - this book has nothing to do with Graham Chapman. It was not written by him and it does not reflect him as the keen wit or comedic genius he was. Why anyone would want to cheapen Chapman's memory with a poorly edited, ghost-written collection featuring bits of his worst material as well as completely fabricated material I do not know. It clearly isn't making them much money. I am not sure why this is not illegal.

I also find it terribly low and dispicable that the author is clearly reviewing his own book. Do take a look; it's fairly obvious. I also noticed on another book by this author he had his own relative "reviewing" the book thus again upping the number of stars one sees when browsing for books. Don't fall for it.

Track down a copy of A Liar's Autobiography instead.

      1 out of 5 stars A disgrace to Graham Chapman's memory.......2004-02-25

This waste of paper is so astoundingly bad as to make one's jaw drop. It's another nail in the coffin of Graham Chapman's literary estate as those responsible continue to 'edit' and 'publish' any old scraps of rubbish which they can find. Chapman was a great comic talent and deserves something much, much better than this. If I could give it no stars at all, I would.

Graham Crackers (a rubbish title which demonstrates in itself how at odds with Chapman's own style of humour this book's 'editor' is) consists of scrappy, unfunny, rejected bits of Chapman material cobbled together with fake Chapman material by the 'editor'. It's not funny, it's not interesting, it's dreadful. Surely Chapman's family can stop this sort of thing.

I think it's very telling that no respectable publisher would touch this 'book' and it ended up being put out by a company which specialises in career guidance! And in the UK, I note, it couldn't find a publisher at all.

It is also obvious to those who know his distinctive style that many of the five-star reviews of this book here are actually the 'editor' posting from various e-mail addresses. Dear oh dear...

3 out of 5 stars Freshness Straight Up.......2003-04-30

Written in first person this book gives new meaning to the word "ghostwriter".

5 out of 5 stars A good book for anyone who watched Python and liked it!.......2002-04-04

Have you ever had those moods where you wanted to read something simple, that wasn't nessisarilly an awsome book, but a good one to miander through? This is one of those books. It was fun to read and had me chuckling throughout! Learn how they came up with The Ministery of Silly Walks scetch, and even scripts that have never been released! Great book. If you have watched python and liked it, this book is for you.

Dewey And Elvis: The Life And Times Of A Rock 'n' Roll Deejay is a biography drawn from personal interviews, documentary sources, and oral history collections to give a personal, no-holds-barred view of celebrated disc jockey Dewey Phillips. Indiana University professor emeritus of history Louis Cantor suggests that Phillips zeal for and promotion of rhythm and blues music set the stage for a 1950's transformation in rock-'n'-roll, not to mention Elvis' legendary success. A fascinating, smoothly flowing examination of one man's life and contributions to popular music in the mid-twentieth century.

            Book Description

This is a lavishly illustrated guide to British television from 1936 to the present day. Entries on over 1,100 programmes are arranged chronologically to provide a unique reference guide to our television heritage. Decade by decade, the diversity of British television emerges, from A for Andromeda to Z Cars, Steptoe and Son to Absolutely Fabulous, Armchair Theatre to The Onedin Line and Andy Pandy to The Wombles. Each entry is accompanied by a production still, many of them previously unpublished and some the sole remaining visual record of the programme. Introductions to the decades offer a fascinating overview of trends and developments, technical, creative, and institutional. The Guide is introduced by a witty and personal Foreword by Michael Grade and a detailed Index allows the reader to trace the careers of favourite performers, from Tony Hancock's appearance in Gogol's The Government Inspector to Sean Connery's apprenticeship in 1950s' BBC drama. Comprehensive, accessible, and wonderfully detailed, the Guide will be irresistible reading for all those who have ever been interested in television.

                4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-09-10

I needed this for an AI course I was supposed to take in the fall. I kept reading this in spare moments and worked with the online compiler at school until I had fairly good handle on lisp.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, but you'll need more.......2007-07-12

This is a nice book. Not a good introduction to programming, but a good introduction to Lisp. The text is clear, and covers the basics of Lisp. You'll still need other books for advanced techniques, though (check paul Graham's "On Lisp").

5 out of 5 stars Quick/Easy Tutorial for a Powerful but Unpopular Language.......2005-03-08

Lisp (no it's not a speech impediment) is an old language. But in spite of all of the hype on the new languages like C, C++, and Java, there is still a need and a place for some of the old languages.

FORTRAN, which is still heavily used by the scientific programmers, particularily with cluster computers and COBOL (remember all the stories of the Y2K problem); Lisp refuses to go away. For certain application areas (not the least of which is AI) Lisp is clearly the language of choice. Easily the most important (or well known) pgrogram written in Lisp or using Lisp techniques is AutoCad. This package which has the requirement to handle millions of separate parts in a design is an ideal application for using Lisp which lends itself well to such large projects.

This is an exceedling well written book on the Lisp language. In the fifty-three pages of Chapter three, there is a twelve lesson tutorial on the language which gives the rudiments quickly and painlessly.

Throughout the book there is discussion on not just the language but points on how Lisp might fit particualrly in selected applications.

                Great Book.

4 out of 5 stars Well polished but.......2005-01-19

                Book Description

The period 31 BC-AD 43 saw the greatest expansion of the Roman Empire. In 31 BC Octavian defeated Antony at the battle of Actium and remodelled the semi-professional Roman army into a permanent force of 28 legions. Octavian became the first emperor (Augustus) and under his leadership the legions conquered northern Spain, all Europe south of the Danube line and Germany west of the Elbe. The legionaries exemplified the heroic culture of the Roman world and this title takes a behind-the-scenes look at their lives, training, weaponry and tactics, including the bloody massacre of the Teutoberg forest.

                5 out of 5 stars Good Introduction.......2007-03-29

The author draws from a variety of Ancient authorities, both famous and obscure, to accurately reconstruct the organization, equipment, and experiences of the Roman legionary from the beginning of Iulius Caesar's Gaulish Campaigns to the Year of the Four Emperors. As with most Osprey books, it is very detailed and the plates by Angus McBride have only one problem-there's not nearly enough!

4 out of 5 stars Fine introduction to the early Imperial legions.......2007-01-22

This Osprey book on the Roman legions proves to be a well written introduction to the subject matter. Written primary for beginners, any beginning reader can get a pretty clear understanding of how the Roman legion works, operates and function as a military unit. The author describes the tactics, weaponary, armor and other elements of the legion clearly and without blogging down the reader with too much details. The author also get on the personal level as he describes the recuitment, training, pay and other individual elements of being a legionaire. All that information for 63 pages. As an introductionary material, this book does an excellent job of a quick read and understanding.

I do agreed with one previous reviewer that there's a singular flaw in this book where the author claims that the century was the primary tactical unit of the legion. I too, totally disagreed with that assertion. That reviewer made an excellent case for why a century wasn't the primary tactical unit so I won't be redundant here.

But overall, the author provided a well researched book that should encouraged most beginning reader on the subject to read more and deeper.

Great source for weapons, armour, tactics, and more! The color plates inside alone are worth the reason to buy this...But it is also filled with great info and more!

                5 out of 5 stars Roman Legionary.......2005-10-12

As with all of this series it is well done and with great illustrations

5 out of 5 stars Good Job on all Points.......2005-07-12

As astudent studying classics in college, I decided to write a term paper on aspects of the Roman army. In searching for books on the topic, I came across this wonderful little book. It gives a very detailed description of the weapons, armor, and lives of the late Republican and early Imperial era Roman legionaries.

Dr. Cowan goes on to give an in-depth description of life on campaign and the experience of battle. He uses several ancient sources to back up his arguments and statements, and he interprets them for the reader. In my opinion, Dr. Cowan is the best author in the entire Osprey military series.

All in all, this book is great for anyone interested in the topic, whether you are a serious student of Roman studies or just a history buff.

This is about the history of whites (mainly europeans) in Kenya, the govoernment, settler farmers, adventurers etc. The reason for giving the book low marks is because it is too anecdotal, there must be hundrends if not thousands of names mentioned thus drowning the reader in minor details that are not continued on at any other place. Had I an easy way to return it, I would in minute.

                  Book Description

During the early decades of the twentieth century, agricultural practice in America was transformed from a pre-industrial to an industrial activity. In this book Deborah Fitzgerald argues that farms became modernized in the 1920s because they adopted not only new machinery but also the financial, cultural, and ideological apparatus of industrialism. Fitzgerald examines how bankers and emerging professionals in engineering and economics pushed for systematic, businesslike farming. She discusses how factory practices served as a template for the creation across the country of industrial or corporate farms. She looks at how farming was affected by this revolution and concludes by following several agricultural enthusiasts to the Soviet Union, where the lessons of industrial farming were studied.
