I can't say much else except - you need at least one of these in your library. In the toolbox of every network engineer should be a journal, one that's kept up to date with problems and solutions that you run into on a daily basis. You'll save a lot of time and effort later on trying to remember "Gee, how did I fix that problem a year ago?". This is a nice hardcover bound book, and will stand the test of time. Buy some of these!

If you're like many in the baby-boom generation, retirement is just now starting to loom on the horizon, as is the prospect of sending your kids to college. If you've never put together an investment plan for yourself or your family, then the Smart Guide to Making Wise Investments may be a good start. Written by Gordon K. Williamson, an attorney and financial planner, this book provides a good overview of the many investment avenues available, from mutual funds and stocks to annuities and real estate. Williamson looks at the financial mistakes that many tend to make (such as buying a new car every few years and investing too conservatively) and explodes common myths about retirement (guess what--most of us will be living and working longer than we think). The book's final chapter shows how to build a financial plan and evaluate your own tolerance for risk. --Harry C. Edwards

5 out of 5 stars Well written overview.......2007-05-07

There are a ton of investing books on the market. This little book is a gem. I don't know how the author managed to cover so many topics thoroughly and yet be so brief -- but he did. It's a few years old but most of its content is still current. (Capital gains tax rates are a little lower today.) An excellent consumer guide for the new investor.

5 out of 5 stars GASP, I UNDERSTAND IT NOW!!.......1999-01-31

This book is brillant. Absorbing accurate, brief and clear paragraphs was a joy. In the margins there are money-making/ money-saving tips. It follows much easier than certain "for Dummies" claim. BUY THIS BOOK. You'll be happy with what you, too, have learned!

            Book Description

This book gives an account of the turbulent and remarkable political history of South Africa in the twentieth century, starting with the South African (Boer) War and finishing as Nelson Mandela comes to power. A great drama unfolds - of struggle, triumph and disaster; of hopes fulfilled and dashed - as the advocates of competing forms of nationalism seek to gain control of the state. The drama is shaped by political, economic and social beliefs and interests, by powerful individuals, and by outside forces which intruded into South Africa. For most of the century whites dominated the scene, creating a society in which they enjoyed economic privilege and exclusive control of the state. Yet they disputed among themselves who were the true South Africans, and therefore who should form the government. As the century advanced, and particularly after the Second World War, the assumption of white dominance was challenged, by advocates both of a non-racial nationalism and of African nationalism, until a new South Africa was born in 1994. This is a story therefore of struggle to realize a dominant nationalism through control of the state, the ways in which political leaders promoted their beliefs and interests; and their responses to the constraints and circumstances they encountered.

            Book Description

Quantum Theory and the Flight from Realism is a critical introduction to the long-standing debate concerning the conceptual foundations of quantum mechanics, and the problems it has posed for physicists and philosophers from Einstein to the present. Quantum theory has been a major influence on postmodernism, and presents significant challenges for realists. Clarifying these debates for the non-specialist, Christopher Norris examines the premises of orthodox quantum theory and its impact on various philosophical developments. He subjects a wide range of opponents and supporters of realism to a high and equal level of scrutiny. Combining rigor and intellectual generosity, he draws out the merits and weaknesses from opposing arguments.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinarily important work.......2007-01-05

If the highly disturbing implications of quantum theory do not cause you to lose sleep or otherwise trouble you deeply, then you don't understand them. The orthodox/Copenhagen view either blankly asserts the unreality of the quantum domain -- and thus apparently the unreality of our own domain -- or buries the issue under the rug with hopes that few will notice.

This masterful work faces the ontological difficulties inherent in QM head on. It's an excellent defense of the reality of nature, even at the smallest levels. While a certain familiarity with the basics of both ontology and quantum physics is necessary, it's nevertheless accessible to the layman (with perhaps a little work).

If you're as troubled by the philosophical implications of QM as I am, this work will help keep you sane.

            4 out of 5 stars just can't copenhagen.......2004-09-14

Norris is admittedly motivated to defend a realist interpretation of Quantum Mechanics (QM) largely due to his own past as a literary cultural relativist type. Having seen the light, he is now concerned to show the rest of the constructivists out of the cave of their own making. (Of course, for them, EVERYTHING is of one's own making.) Surely this is an admirable task. Where Norris differs from many with the same agenda vis-à-vis strong relativism is in the sincerity of the attempt to treat with sympathy his opponent's anti-realism, and not simply write it off as so much obscurantist mumbo-jumbo, as others are want to do. Of course, Norris has a strong agenda- to preserve the basic physicalist concepts that seem to underlie all actual (and perhaps possible) human understanding of the natural world, like determinate position/ trajectory, causality, observer and mind-independence, and the like.

His exposition of the Bohr/Einstein debates is particularly illuminating. Although history has clearly viewed Bohr and his Copenhagen acolytes as the victors, Norris presents interesting arguments that expose certain "sociological" and philosophical prejudices of the "judges", coupled with a brand of realism peculiar to Einstein as causes of Einstein's having "lost" the debate. Norris is equally astute a critic when pointing to manifold inadequacies or confusions in the thinking of Bohr and Heisenberg.

Norris is clearly a skilled critic and expositor of very complicated subject matter, which he renders clear and understandable. He is certainly adept at identifying the major issues at hand, and for anti-realists of various stripes, this is a book to be reckoned with.

However, I must admit I find his main thesis unconvincing. Norris constantly relies on the notion that a "Bohm type of `hidden variables' theory," (a phrase found perhaps on every page,) would restore the classical physicalist picture and (dis)solve the so called "quantum paradoxes." Yet Norris does not satisfactorily explain what this amounts to, or give (let alone argue for) any general principle of what the connection between ontology and mathematical formalism is, such that similar if not identical formalism may permit divergent ontological commitments. (Although I'm not sure I've seen this anywhere.) Moreover, and perhaps most importantly for Norris' project, if such a theory as Bohm's is entirely scientifically/observationally tenable, surely Norris must explain why more physicists and philosophers are not jumping at the opportunity to reinstate the good ol' one world, determinate causality and observer-independence picture. After all, wouldn't scientists love to end this embarrassing phase in our history when physics can so easily be aligned with the holism of Eastern mystics? And to the extent to which Norris is concerned with "sociological" factors in considering why, historically, the Copenhagen interpretation wound up the victor, surely the fact that a putatively tenable "realist" alternative continues to fail to this day (now 70 years removed from the EPR debates) to gain acceptance is a fact requiring both "sociological" and strong philosophical explanation.

In the same vein, he must explain why, and not simply that, great philosophers (not just scientists qua philosophers,) like Putnam have been so influenced by the `bizarre' considerations presented by orthodox QM theory (which I think Norris ultimately fails to do even in his book on Putnam, Hilary Putnam: Realism, Reason and the Uses of Uncertainty.) Norris provides little in the way of these arguments, but rather just seems to assume that one can simply take the de Broglie pilot wave or Bohm `hidden variables' theory and use it to ward off the allegedly unwarranted global anti-realistic interpretation that has been, rightly or wrong, interpreted to be constitutive of the Copenhagen interpretation.

So in the end, Norris is just another table-thumping realist who insists that no amount of empirical knowledge could ever possibly undermine the classic realist notion of mind-independence, for the simple reason that no matter what we come to know, the world is already out there waiting to be known.

Nonetheless, this book is fascinating, and a must-read for those interested in issues of realism and anti-realism as they pertain to the history and philosophy of 20th century physics.

1 out of 5 stars Started off well, but............2007-09-04

The beginning was both enjoyable and humorous when Paris, the main character wakes up married to "Elvis." It goes downhill from there, however, because Paris appears selfish and does everything she can to make us not like her. The humor is lost and the ending is predictable, though anticlimactic. The writer should have stayed with the humor and let Paris work out her insecurities in a less dark way.

4 out of 5 stars There still are few good men out there.......2006-06-18

I fell in love with Turner, what a sexy man of God. I thought this story was sweet. I loved the well developed characters. Millie made me laugh out loud more than once. If I had to say something negative it would be about Paris. I was so not digging Paris's stubbornness and shallowness in the beginning. But as her character grew I developed a fondness for her. This story demonstrates unconditional love, for better or for worse in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. This is the stuff great marriages are made of. This is a light easy read that will keep you turning the pages.

3 out of 5 stars What happens in Vegas... stays in Vegas.......2006-01-30

Aging model Paris awakens in her hotel room the morning after her 30th birthday with a massive hangover and a stud in her bed. She soon discovers that she has eloped with an Elvis-impersonating preacher, who is also a friend from high school. She immediately asks for an annulment and flees to New York.

After a couple weeks to calm down, Turner seeks out his new wife in the Big Apple, just in time to discover that she is pregnant. Paris does not want the child - her own childhood was stolen from her when her mother became severely depressed after the birth of her sister and after a series of tragedies, she ended up alone in a Catholic orphanage. She makes a bargain to carry his baby in exchange for a divorce.

Turner agrees then sets about changing her mind. Returning to Vegas, she moves into his already crowded apartment, which gets a little more crowded when a friend from his parent's island colony comes to stay with them while she finishes up school.

MacPherson's romance novels are usually light fare. This was is a little more dark, as Paris wallows in self-pit as she comes to grips with her past and fears that the sins of the mother will transfer to her. Turner is just too good to be true, considering what a shrew Paris is most of the time. A lesser man would have kicked her out on her Manolo's!

5 out of 5 stars Fun without Freaking Out.......2005-06-17

"She Woke Up Married" is an absolutely fantastic book. It takes an absolutely insane and laugh out loud funny storyline about a fashion model who has too much to drink and ends up Vegas married to her former high school friend turned Elvis Impersonator, but then adds in real human issues about relationships. I enjoyed this book like few others. [...]

            1 out of 5 stars Not a good read.......2005-06-02

I have to agree with other reviewers, I expected a light hearted read. The main character just came across as bitchy, self-centered. The hero was just to syrupy sweet and patient to be real. Post-partum depression is no laughing matter and in this book just made me feel glum, just having to read over and over how bad her childhood was. I was very disappointed in this book.

I thought the book was very insightful, but I would liked to have a better feeling of how his units conflicts and battles fit into the larger picture

                  4 out of 5 stars A good mid-level's officer's view of the war.......2006-10-16

"Five Years, Four Fronts" by Georg Grossjohann is a solid four stars. A better book is "The Forgotten Soldier", but that book is about a simple drafted soldier. Major Grossjohann is a "lifer" in the Deutsche Heer.

Personally, I really liked his recollections of the days of the pre-WWII German Army. It's quite like the US Army but it's different on a few levels. Note, a sergeant goes around stabbing privates in the butt with his thumb. He is trying to catch soldiers not standing at attention correctly. "Keep that coffee bean tight he screams at his soldiers!" This just sounds weird to modern readers but gives a good view into the mind of that generation.

Major Grossjohann starts his military career as a simple private in the German Army. After a while he is trained to higher levels in the Heer and eventually gets a commission in the German Army. Grossjohann has the misfortune of having a commanding officer who does not like him. So, he can't get promoted with his peers. A result is he has the doubious honor of being the highest date-of-rank captain in the German Army in 1940 after a near 15 years of service. A note to new US Army Lieutenants: don't tell your commander what an idiot he is during field exercises.

Grossjohann is in the Polish campaign. He sees action against the French Army and their fort system works as designed when attacked at strong points. Indeed, if the French had extended the line from the English Channel to past the Ardennes it's doubtful Germany could have cracked that tough nut.

The book is very readable. I gave it to a friend and he finished the book in less than two days in his part time reading.

One way that the military experences of Grossjohann is like a regular US Army officer is he spends the time of March to the end-of-the-war in a military professional development course. He was being groomed by the German Army to be a full colonel and a regimental commander.

This is a good book. I recommend it because it will show a good company commander in action.

4 out of 5 stars Hard combat interwooved with light moments.......2006-01-19

Although it is true that an avid reader of World War literature will not learn many new things from this book, Grossjohan's memoirs remain extremely interesting because during his service he climbed slowly the ladder of hierarchy, going from platoon leader to battalion commander, with much success. Every chapter has a short introduction covering the "big picture" of the various campaigns where Grossjohan took part and then follow his experiences. I found most interesting the social structure of the German officer corps, the talent of the commanders, the stoic attitude of the low ranks and the magnificent discipline which Wehrmacht troops show, even in adversity. Grossjohan was awarded the Iron Cross Second and First Class, the Knight's Cross and the German Cross in Gold.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing New From A Proud Nazi.......2005-12-14

Georg Grosjohann's slim memoir really adds very little to the plethora of first-hand accounts by German soldiers, sailors and airmen who fought in WWII. It is pedestrian in style and tone (or at least the English translation is), and actually very limited in scope. The author, who already had 12 years' experience as a German soldier before Germany invaded Poland, surprisingly has comparatively few battle experiences to tell when compared with some of the more well-known soldier-authors.

In addiiton, if one hopes to find clues as to how German soldiers may have slowly changed in their attiudes about Hitler as the war progressed, they won't be found in Grossjohann's book. He remains here a supporter of Der Fuhrer, and has nohing but disdain for those who withdrew their support from the German leader later in or after the war. Grosshohann wryly notes how the numbers of Germans who actively opposed Hitler seemed to magically grow for years after the war's end, and mockingly asks how in the world Hitler ever came to power in the first place with so many claining to have opposed him. But Grossjohann seems more angry and bitter at the weakness of disloyal Nazis than amused at the human weakness displayed in their dishonesty and self-interest

As for the book itself, far more enlightening, interesting and well-written are the accounts of Guy Sajer, Siegfried Knappe and Hans von Luck, just to name a few. Each has far more combat experiences to share than Grossjohann; each is a more lively and engaging writer; and none is burdened with the inabilty to honestly recount and assess the actions of Nazi Germany and the men who fought for it.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding first hand account.......2005-09-06

This book clearly conveyed what it was like for a front line infantry officer serving on the German side of WWII. I find it thoroughly refreshing that the author kept to his main premise of the novel: that most of the German fighting men were tough adversaries that were often not fighting for a form of government they preferred, or for a dream of conquest, but rather for the man next to them in the foxhole.

Another point that distinguishes this work over many others is the fact that Mr. Grossjohann served in the German Army for nearly 12 years before the war began in 1939, and was a professional soldier, not a conscripted draftee as many surviving German authors were. This provides the insight of someone who knew the 'bigger picture' above and beyond most of the conscript soldiers that comprised the bulk of the German Wehrmacht, but was not above their common shared misery, as was the case with many generals who wrote their memoirs after the war

Highly recommended for those looking for another point of view to WWII history.

                  Book Description

After Hitler’s invasions of Poland and France came the Russian Front–and that’s when the real war started.

An infantryman who rose from the enlisted ranks to regimental command in combat, Georg Grossjohann fought on four different fronts during World War II, but saw most of his fighting–from 1941 to 1944–against Russians in the Soviet Union and Romania. He provides shattering glimpses of the horror and chaos of the war, as well as profound insights into everyday life in the Wehrmacht.

Five Years, Four Fronts chronicles the combat experiences of Grossjohann and his men as they triumphantly roll across Poland, France, and the sunny steppes of the Ukraine, only to ultimately sustain grinding defeats in the endless, freezing plains of the Soviet Union and the grim, dark Vosges Mountains of France. Grossjohann was a soldier’s soldier, respected by his men, undaunted by his superiors, and, as can be observed in this raw, brutally honest account, not afraid to call the shots as he saw them.

2 out of 5 stars Made WWII Dull.......2007-07-29

The author made a complete hash of his story. His combat narratives are along the line of the Russian shelled the town all night and leveled everything but we held on. Or the Russians shelled the bridgehead all night and we weren't able to hold on. Riveting stuff. The author also takes time out to make sure you know he is quite the ladies may but with simple minded language more fitting for a [...]girl's diary. The little secret of the book is the author didn't see that much action. He basically missed Poland, served a short uneventful tour in Russia then a long tour with a training unit in occupied France, then back for a tour in Russia then back to Southern France before the invasion. The US pushed his unit out of France in short order and the war ended. Oh yes we did that because we had so much equipment and that made up for the fact our troops weren't very good. The excuses of a real loser. Give this a pass, it has no value either as history or autobiography.

5 out of 5 stars incredible insight behind 'enemy lines'.......2007-01-09

An incredible book that reveals the humanity of the 'enemy'.It makes the Germans humans, who also had feelings and fears just the same as their Allied counterparts.Traditionally, growing up in an Allied country one is tought that the Germans were all evil personified. This book gives insight to the fact that the German soldier was just an ordinary human being, being sent into battle to fight a politicians war.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting book; disjointed presentation.......2006-03-20

An interesting and easy to read first person perspective from a former German officer. Grossjohann enlisted in the late 1920s and finished the war in 1945 as a major. It provides insight into what it was like to fight at the tactical level in Poland, the Russian Front, and the west. He fought against the Poles (limited action), the Russians (quite a bit), the Americans, and the French. Provides insight into the steadily decreasing capabilities of German units as the war progressed.

Unfortunately the book is a bit disjointed as it jumps from experience to experience, with the odd sidebar thrown in. Fortunately there is an attempt to put Grossjohann's battles into the larger picture so the reader has some context.

3 out of 5 stars Good but brief.......2006-03-10

Interesting details but a very short book. Although it is 250 pages (twenty of which are appendices) more than half is a historical commentary by Keith Bonn and Wolf Zoepf. The historical commentary is a nice review of war events to frame Georg's comments but it means that book contains only about 100 pages of Georg's rememberances. The historical commentary is good but not 100% accurate. Georg's comments are not very flattering to the German military and many are stray comments about (civilian) women that he met.

This is an A-Z coverage of pirates and related topics. It includes coverage of books, authors, movies, actors, places and, you got it, actual pirates. If you want information of something piratical this is a good first place to look. There's a lot left out though, so I'd consider this as a good beginning on a more comprehensive book.

One big caution though, Rogozinski, doesn't seem to be overly constrained by history, so don't take everything written in this book as gospel. P-)

                    4 out of 5 stars a fun coffee-table book.......2002-08-25

This is basically a coffee-table book, with lots of neat facts and figures about all things piratical. It certainly has some errors here and there, but it serves as a nice cross-referencing tool with other books on the subject. And where else can one find such a diverse discussion, including entries on the origin and formation of the pop-culture image of the pirate (peglegs, yo ho ho, etc), camp movies like the various Treasure Island features, and reviews of stories from Sabatini to Pope? While this book could certainly cover the pirate pulp novels of the 40s, 50s, & 60s better (think Jay Scotland), it's great for what it is. For a more scholarly book, I strongly recommend Ritchie's Captain Kidd.

3 out of 5 stars A good reference book, but an average history one........1999-06-17

This book is practical for references. But the author is often wrong. I found about a dozen fatal errors, and several minor ones. I have read many, many books of pirates history. If the author had truly read with care his masive bibliography, then he would not have made so many mistakes. I do not believe he did his homework well. Also, he does not gives any body of notes, so we the readers do not know where he took his data from, nor can we distinguish when is he using primary sources or when he is making things up. I recomend it only with reserves. For a better book, see David Cordingly, or go to the masters as Gosse.

                    Book Description

This book gives a unified treatment of a variety of mathematical systems generating densities, ranging from one-dimensional discrete time transformations through continuous time systems described by integro-partial-differential equations. Examples have been drawn from a variety of the sciences to illustrate the utility of the techniques presented. This material was organized and written to be accessible to scientists with knowledge of advanced calculus and differential equations. In various concepts from measure theory, ergodic theory, the geometry of manifolds, partial differential equations, probability theory and Markov processes, and chastic integrals and differential equations are introduced. The past few years have witnessed an explosive growth in interest in physical, biological, and economic systems that could be profitably studied using densities. Due to the general inaccessibility of the mathematical literature to the non-mathematician, there has been little diffusion of the concepts and techniques from ergodic theory into the study of these "chaotic" systems. This book intends to bridge that gap.

                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!.......2000-12-20

This is one of my favorite maths books. My interest in it is not so much for the discussion of chaotic systems, but more for that on stochastically perturbed systems. As far as this topic goes, this is the best book I've found in the field by far. The treatment is careful and self-contained, and the proofs are clear throughout. Lots of intuition is given with each result.

As a caveat, note that the approach is based on analysis in general and functional analysis in particular. If you prefer probabilistic arguments look somewhere else.

I found this book to be a bit scattered. I constantly found myself flipping to other parts of the book for reference, which was a bit annoying. I found that I didn't finish the book for those reasons.

                    3 out of 5 stars Basic introduction.......2000-06-03

Jane Smiths review seemed a bit biased. I will agree that this book has different illustrated different approaches in england than in CA. But then again CA at times seems to think they are a different country than the entire US. It seems she didn't review the book for what it was rather than her own personal agenda.

This book can be used to get a basic overview of what it means to take a sustainable approach. THe Author limited its scope to dealing with remedies for existing houses and didn't not focus on new development. Its target audience seemed to be the average Joe.

The author does not get to specific on remedies but at least touches on all of the major issues providing an outline for further research or a guide to know what to look out for.

I would recomend this book to anyone with no backround or understanding of sustainable building looking for an good introduction.

Don't kill any trees by bothering to buy this book. In fact, don't waste any brain cells by trying to read it either. When I bought this book I was looking for some sensible ways to reduce my impact on the environment as I was finishing my basement. I had already read about easy energy saving measures like better insulation and fluorescent lighting and was looking for a little more in depth knowledge. I certainly didn't get it here. The author advocates wood burning stoves and construction, without taking into consideration the durability and recyclability of other materials and the destruction to forests caused by clearcutting. He does not seem to understand that environmental problems have different solutions in England than they do in California. Worse yet, on several occasions he is just plain wrong. On page 104, while describing photovoltaic cells, he says that "the negative electrons are activated." I was forced to assume that the author was a total flake and that the Union of Concerned Scientists had failed to read this book when they recommended it in their otherwise excellent book, "The consumer's guide to effective environmental choices." Though there is some good information in this book, if you can filter it out from the useless junk, you don't need to read it, and if you can't, get a better book and skip the misinformation in this one.
