make an overall plan first.......2005-09-03

The book is mostly about developing nifty controls using X10. In this field, X10 is by far the dominant controller. Soper explains why, by describing numerous varied ways to have it control items in the typical household. It is probably simpler to read this book than thumb through the official X10 documentation. Soper does not require that you have a deep technical background to implement the book's methods.

Aside from the specific automation methods, he also offers a chapter on planning what you might want to and be able to automate in your home. Here is where you can start, to devise an overall plan, in a top-down fashion, rather than plunge into hooking up one or two gadgets. That can come later. The chapter is good for helping decide, especially within the constraints of a budget, which surely applies to many readers.

The book also points out a strong point about the latest X10 devices. These can be wireless, hugely easing installation. No awkward and unsightly wires trailing along your floors and walls.

This book by Mark Soper delivers the essential information about home networking. I have recommended the book to several friends after using it myself for building a home network. If you are a novice and need help getting started or want to plan and deploy your first home network - this will be a great guide. Soper uses personal experience and humor to help you overcome any fear of technology. I found the book to be practical and a useful step-by-step map for setting up home networks. Bravo!

Good reference book. Includes good discussions on foundations and principles of Colorimetry. Should be updated to include examples of modern colorimetry applications such as Digital Color Management topics, Scanners, etc. If a person is starting a career which requires a knowledge in colorimetry, it a must.

This book was simply entertaining! I enjoyed reading it and it reminded me a bit of Bridget Jones humor. Not sure that I've ever chuckled out loud while reading before (perhaps that says more about me or my reading list), however this book did it. I'm already looking forward to Ally's next clever book. Harvard graduate Motley traveled in the early 1800s from the U.S.to Europe where he studied in Germany, followed by a short stint as diplomat in Russia. Although he would become a leading diplomat in later years, he first turned to literary activities, of which The Rise of the Dutch Republic played a major role. Published in 1856 it became very popular among European and American readers and was translated in many languages,including Dutch and Russian.

This work not only describes the history of Holland in colorful and eloquent terms and with a sense of sympathy for the Dutch, but also instructs in well documented ways how the Dutch built their Republic and a political system which still today influences Dutch society. Moreover it offers lessons to a modernday world which continues to grapple with dictatorships, disfunctional governments and failed states. This book is clearly a landmark in literary and historical terms, and a delight to read for those interested in Dutch history as well as readers more generally interested in history and its links to today's societies.

Experienced Secondary Science Teacher Praises this Book.......2000-09-07

I am beginning my second semester using this book as my primary text for my secondary science methods class. My class has to provide students with a framework for teaching all the science content that they have mastered in their 3 years of college. This book provides an excellent source for students to think about what it means to be a science teacher, to understand major curriculum projects in earlier grades that will impact secondary science, and to address important issues of gender equity, inclusion, and national and state standards for teaching. There is too much material for me to cover fully in a 2 semester hour class, but, I try to talk about and discuss in class most of the content. The activities at the end of each chapter are excellent for giving students practical ways of applying information in the chapter. I have not found another book to equal this book's caliber and practical usefulness.
