A well written book, but a little outdated.......2002-11-08
The book covers most of the basics, but it is poorly illustrated and doesn't deal with any of the more modern advancements in CNC technology.

Book Description
Welcome to Gil's All Night Diner, where zombie attacks are a regular occurrence and you never know what might be lurking in the freezer. . . .Duke and Earl are just passing through Rockwood county in their pick-up truck when they stop at the diner for a quick bite to eat. They aren't planning to stick around--until Loretta, the eatery'snbsp;owner, offers them one hundred dollars to take care of her zombie problem. Given that Duke is a werewolf and Earl's a vampire, this looks right up their alley. But the shambling dead are just the tip of a particularly spiky iceberg. Seems someone's out to drive Loretta from the diner, and more than willing to raise a little hell on earth if that's what it takes. Before Duke and Earl get to the bottom of the diner's troubles, they'll run into such otherworldly complications as undead cattle, an amorous ghost, a jailbait sorceress, and the terrifying occult power of pig Latin. And maybe--just maybe--the End of the World, too.Gory, sexy, and flat-out hilarious, Gil's All Fright Diner will tickle your funny bone--before ripping it out of its socket!
Customer Reviews:
Lighten up and read this one! .......2007-08-23
A really entertaining, gruesome, hilarious, sexy, horrific vampire/werewolf/ghost/witch/end of the world story. A quick read that you won't be able to put down. Engrossing characters, outlandish situations, and lots of killer action.
I had great fun reading this book and you will too.
Brisk, hilarious debut.......2007-08-22
A. Lee Martinez' hilarious debut novel flips all of the stagnant tropes of the horror/monster genre on their collective head and delivers a brisk, entertainingly self-conscious introduction to the adventures of Duke and Earl -- werewolf and vampire, respectively -- and the Anomalous Phenomena Attraction that finds them caught up in all kinds of "weird [ish]". The main plot revolves around a teenaged vixen/sorceress determined to bring about the end of the world, but it's grounded by a compelling cast of characters who come to vivid life through Martinez' skillful dialogue and comic timing.
The Douglas Adams comparisons are apt but unnecessary beyond a marketing hook -- if anything, Charlaine Harris' southern vampire novels are a more fitting reference -- as right from the first chapter's zombie attack and its simultaneously straightforward and tongue-in-cheek tone, Martinez' tale and talent stand on their own merits. He's set the bar rather high for himself, and I'm greatly looking forward to reading the further adventures of Duke, Earl and friends.
A Great Read!.......2007-08-03
This is the first book that I've read by A. Lee Martinez.
Wow. What a fab read. I normally read romance but decided to pick up one of his books after hearing about him in a group I'm in. So after debating if I should buy this book or not since I don't normally read this genre of book - I finally decided to give it a try. You don't know unless you read it if you'll actually like it or not - right?
So I did and I was not disappointed with it at all and I'm very glad that I did pick it up. A. Lee Martinez is now on my must buys list.
If you haven't read this book - you should. I enjoyed the characters (how great were they???), the plot and the humor. I would say all the funny parts were in the right places - but that's not all this book offers.
He has created some very interesting - and whether you want to admit it or not lovable characters (well I LOVED them). I had to know what the characters were doing, what they were going to do next and how it all ended.
A very creative mind, a great read and now a must buy author - I'm so glad I took the chance and picked it up. Not always the case - but this time it was.
Put this down? Not on your life. .......2007-07-26
Have you ever had a story grab you, pull you in, and not let go? Gil's will do that for you. I've always been a fan of stories that enthrall me. I need to be carried off to the world the writer has created, or I lose interest by the 2nd chapter. A. Lee Martinez was kind enough to drag me along for the ride in Gil's.
I got the book from the guy who slept in the rack above me on my last ship, the USS Samuel B. Roberts. He said "Read this." Nothing more. Since flight ops were delayed, I gave it a go. 2 days later, between shifts, drills, and occasional sleep I was done, and a permanent fan.
So take a chance, read something off beat. It's truly creative, and will make you beg for more.
Absolute entertainment.......2007-07-21
I bought this book on a whim, having run out of reading material before a flight. My expectations were low, and as a huge fan of Chuck Palaniuk and anything horror, I expected this book to be one which I would get into the first chapter and quit. This fast paced, truly original story grabbed me by the seat of my pants in the first five pages. It's an amazing story fit to be read by anyone at any age. I couldn't put the book down until I had read it from cover to cover. I would strongly urge anyone with a mind and a sense of humor to read "Gil's All Fright Diner", a book that instantly became my personal favorite.
Book Description
This book pays tribute to the U.S. Marines, the World's Warrior Elite.
It's all here: Marine quotations, Tun Tavern, Marine slogans, and the revered War Memorial on "hallowed ground." There's much, much more: Blood Stripe, Blood Chit, Battle Colors, the many creeds, the Commandants, and the Mameluke and NCO swords.

Plus, the text offers satire exclusively for Marine Warriors. Readers find timeless one-liners for the Magnificent Grunts and Marine Air.
"Politically In-Correct" and proud of it! A gung-ho and up-beat look at the premier fighting force on planet Earth.
Customer Reviews:
Quote Book.......2007-08-26
I didn't really like this book. When I read it, I thought of it as a quote book. I mean, it has great quotes from Marines, but I don't really want to read a book on clips of quotes.
Must read for Jarheads!!.......2007-02-11
I bought this book for my Marine husband for his birthday. He is reading it now and enjoying it very much. He says it is very motivating!
Warrior Culture of the U,S. Marines.......2006-03-15
Marion Sturky is currently the finest transscriber of observed
and experienced Marine Combat. You must start with Bonnie Sue
then read Warior Cutlure and finally Murphy's Laws of Combat to
fully arrpreciate the splended writing and experience of our
Corps. For Marines [Once, Always], Warrior Culture will say finally someone got it. Its so captivating you'll want to give
copies to men who will appreciate it and after reading will think, Why did it take so long to put something so simple so well.
Semper Fi, Richard C. Crepeau Sgt.USMC,2099074,3rd Force Recon

The Brotherhood .......2005-01-31
The Marines are a brotherhood, or so i am told. I believe they are the best men on earth, joined together to defend our country and faced with tasks that no one else would do. After reading this book, i know that the marines are more than just soldiers, that they are loyal, intelligent, hardworking, humble, powereful people that have chosen a life many dream or or see in the movies, but never experience. This is why marines are better than normal people, and why some people dont like marines. They know that marines are better people, since they make sacrifices most never even think of. This is why i am going to join the marines, so i may one day be part of the glorious brotherhood that is the United States Marine Corps!
SEMPER FI!
General info, not the true reasons.......2004-01-08
Marines and those who are intrigued by Marines will be reading this. The book describes the Marines as the "brotherhood", to which I have nothing but agreement, yet although there are centuries of traditions (blood stripe from the battle that Marines lost 68+% of their men etc, ) the current day gunk that keeps Marines together is their ballsy "I'll do you one better" attitude and the way the peacetime sweating helps them prevent bleeding in war. I've mentioned it before, yet it must be mentioned here...the true look comes from one author...P.Chadz with his collection of "in your face memoirs" that show actually what the modern day Marines do on training and liberty to keep their tribe the finest brotherhood in all the services. Let these stories be a harboring area where your mind is allowed to go back to and understand that these ideas and principles probably got most young boys to enlist, yet the book from CHADZ is the stories that makes them become a brotherhood, and these types of stories keep repeating themselves, each day a new generation walks across the bases of Pendleton, Lejuene and beyound.

Book Description
The textile-block system was a fascinating experiment that Frank Lloyd Wright conducted from about 1922 to 1932 as part of his quest to find a new system of construction using a standardized building material based on the idea of twentieth-century machine technology. Robert Sweeney has meticulously researched the textile block system, providing a case-by-case account of each project, commenting on Wright's clients, collaborators, and contractors, and positioning Wright's experiment firmly within the larger historical context of concrete block technology. Sweeney traces the forms of several of the early concrete block projects to Wright's own earlier work, clarifies an array of important technical challenges the architect faced, and notes the numerous block shapes required for execution
The concrete block experiment was firmly rooted in the concept of architectural simplification that Wright established at the outset of his career. It was begun in Hollywood, where he was living at the time, but was part of a larger vision with global application. Wright pursued the concept with a sense of mission, designing approximately thirty projects through the decade. Sweeney shows, however that this technical evolution can be explained in just three designs: the canonical Millard house of February 1923; and in two unexecuted projects, the Community Playhouse, "Little Dipper," for Aline Barnsdall, and in designs for a resort hotel for the Arizona desert.
Although Wright began with structure, Sweeney points out that he was primarily interested in form: technology of assembly was only a path to architectural creation. As the structural system matured - a process coinciding with the evolution of the minimalist International Style in Europe - the buildings became increasingly architectonic; forms were simplified, and the initial fascination with ornament all but disappeared.
Robert L. Sweeney is Executive Director of the R. M. Shindler House in Los Angeles. His comprehensive annotated bibliography on Wright was published in 1978.

Book Description
Buzzwords showcases the Best of Berenbaum, a selection from her humor column in the American Entomologist professional journal, accompanied by a number of original pieces written for this book. The book comes in four parts: how entomologists see insects, including their view of a U.S. government plan to eradicate illicit coca fields by dropping caterpillars from airplanes; how the rest of the world sees insects, with Berenbaum's proposed classificatory scheme for placing Spider Man, Firefly, and other cartoon superheroes into well-defined taxa; how entomologists view themselves--featuring Bambi Berenbaum, a gorgeous entomologist created for an episode of TV's popular "The X- Files," whose character was inspired when the scriptwriter consulted Berenbaum's books; how entomologists see their colleagues, with various views on scholarly citation, motion sickness, and more. Along the way are some thought-provoking observations--for example, about the impact of television on public knowledge of science. In one poll, Berenbaum writes, 35% of adults said they believed that prehistoric humans coexisted with dinosaurs, la the Flintstones. Although you'll chuckle all the way, Berenbaum has the last laugh, giving powerful lessons in the spectacular diversity of the insect world and the nature of scientific discovery, cleverly packaged as witty observations on subjects far and wide.
Customer Reviews:
A Compilation of Humorous Bug Essays.......2007-04-21
Author May R. Berenbaum is head of the Entomology Dept. at U of Illinois and is a distinguished insect researcher and humorist. She has somewhat of a cartoonist Gary Larson ("The Far Side") sense of humor and this book is a compilation of her short articles that appeared in the "American Entomologist" from 1991 to 1999.
With such article headings as: "On elderly ants", "Fatal attractions", "Roach clips and other short subjects", "Infield flies and other sporting types", "Subpoenas envy", etc., one will find a hilarious, pun-filled book full of laughs. No wonder then that such a distinguished scientist as sociobiologist E. O. Wilson ("Diversity of Life", et al.) gave this nod to Berenbaum's book: "No one in recent years has written on insects with more learning, passion, and disarming humor than May Berenbaum. She is a great friend of the Hexapoda and therefore, ultimately, us"- from the back cover. Indeed!
Buzzmarvel.......2007-03-20
The book written by Berenbaum is absolutely amazing and as a young entomologist I found her short essays very funny and suggesting that entomolgy is not a boring discipline for scientists only, but also for anyone interested in the understanding of what happen in the insect microcosmos. I strongly recommend this book and I'm sure that you will enjoy it.
Mauro Mandrioli (Italy)
Biizarre, comical facts about insects and entomologists.......2004-10-31
With Buzzwords, May Berenbaum presents a collection of essays, many previously published, that show the lighter-and usually humorous side-of entomology. Berenbaum divides her book into four sections: how entomologists see insects, how the world sees insects, how entomologists see themselves and how an entomologist sees science. Topics include insect flatulence, the misrepresentation of insects in comic books, the stereotypical role of entomologists in movies, aged ants, the smoking of insects, naming insects and, as the name suggest, insect sex life. None of this, of course, would ever have been considered a humorous topic to me prior to this book. A few pages into it, however, and I was reading aloud the amazing, bizarre and comical facts about insects and entomologists. I must add, though, that the final section was not nearly as interesting and it took me a lot longer to read it than I did the others; the first two sections were especially droll and I flew through those hundred pages with amazing speed.
Of course, this being a collection of humorous essays, each one had to end with a punch line, a pun or a joke. At times they seemed forced and this tended to lessen my enjoyment of the essay somewhat. Another detraction was the occasional incorrect punctuation. There was a tendency for quotation marks and parenthesis to start and never close, causing me to skim frantically down the page to see just when the thought would end. Despite these objections, Buzzwords was an pleasant-and eye-opening-read, fully deserving of four out of five stars.
A hilarious introduction to the insect community.......2004-09-18
It is clear from the prologue of May Berenbaum's Buzzwords that readers of the book are in for a good time. The author's breezy, conversational description of the bug-related essays to follow--most of them written in the 1990s and reprinted, with minor revisions, from the author's column in American Entomologist--culminates in her apologia for including in her otherwise user-friendly prose the scientific names of the critters under discussion:
"But before you proceed, here's a word of warning. In these essays, you'll encounter scientific names. For reasons I'm not entirely clear on, these seem to alarm people, even some biologists, unnecessarily. These names, which are written in Latin and consist of two parts, the genus followed by the species, are used not to impress people with dazzling displays of arcane knowledge; I don't know that I've ever won anyone's heart or stopped a fight or brought the world one step closer to peace and tranquility by reeling off a scientific name at a critical juncture. They're used simply because they're really very useful."
And we readers are hooked. There follow 42 brief, amusingly-titled essays divided into four broad categories: how entomologists see insects, how the world sees insects, how entomologists see themselves, and how an entomologist sees science.
While written initially for the amusement of entomologists, Berenbaum's essays are accessible to the general public, both those who are enamored of, or at least tolerant of, the beasties with whom she works and those more squeamish readers who believe that in a perfect world all bugs would perish from the face of the earth. (Not that I'm choosing sides here.) Moreover, though readers who are not scientifically inclined will occasionally encounter passages in Berenbaum's essays that are beyond their ken, this should by no means dissuade them from reading the book: there is much here that can be appreciated by the ignorant layman.
Berenbaum's subject matter, if always bug-related, is otherwise varied. In a delightful discussion of flatulence ("Putting on airs"), for example, both human and insect, we learn that termites may be responsible for a scandalous proportion of the earth's atmospheric methane levels. In the same essay Ms. Berenbaum further informs us that the manifold varieties of human flatulence are codified in the apparently otherwise stolid, doorstop-sized Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy (which reports, we are told, that the "open sphincter" type is "said to be of higher temperature and more aromatic").
In "Ain't no bugs in me!" we read of the alarming tendency of insects to find their way into various of the human body's orifices. There is the case of the appearance of maggots in a Japanese girl's urogenital tract as well as the infestation of a London man's nasal cavities with the sheep nasal bot fly--an occurrence which is not, we are told, "all that uncommon in shepherds and in other people who for whatever reason choose to spend a lot of time around sheep," but which is apparently unusual indeed among sheepless Englishmen.
Berenbaum discusses sexual cannibalism among praying mantids in her essay "A prayer before dining": decapitating the mantid male prior to intercourse, she reports, removes his inhibitions. And in "Entomological legwork" the author describes the disturbing circumstances under which she reached "the profound realization that cockroaches are just not like us."
But it was with particular interest that I read Berenbaum's essay "Kids Pour Coffee on Fat Girl Scouts," wherein she writes about the various mnemonic devices she's come across in her academic career--those for remembering the 12 spinal nerves ("On Old Olympus' Towering Tops / A Finn and German Viewed Some Hops") and the 10 classes of stars, for example ("Oh, Be A Fine Girl, Kiss Me Right Now, Sweetheart"). The teaching assistants of her undergraduate geology class, she remembers, taught an alternate version of the mnemonic usually used for rendering the Moh scale of hardness in minerals. It's traditionally rendered as "Texas Girls Can Flirt And Other Queer Types Can Do," but, Berenbaum writes, "according to the version the teaching assistants taught us, the Texas girls were considerably friendlier and had moved well beyond flirting."
Berenbaum is a very good and a very funny writer. she may not make readers who are hostile to the insect community any more forgiving of those hordes of roaches and carpenter ants and tsetse flies awaiting their chance to wrest from humanity the mantle of world dominance...but she sure makes it fun to read about them....
...But before I go I should say one more thing, by way of full disclosure: while I have never met or communicated with Ms. Berenbaum, and while she certainly can have no idea who I am, we do enjoy a relationship of sorts. You know those foul-mouthed teaching assistants who, to extract their cheap pleasures from the business of education, corrupted a perfectly serviceable device for remembering the Moh scale of hardness? Well, I'm ashamed to report that I'm married to one of them.

Buzzwords, a compilation of humor columns written for American Entomologist by May Berenbaum from 1991-1999, combines science and wit with a little bit of everyday life to come up with some pretty funny - and interesting - stuff for entomologists and entomologist wanna-bes.
While these essays were written for the scientific community and there are occasional lapses into research methods or Latin syntax, for the most part the essays are in common English and provide some great information on insects in a much lighter format than the average scientific texts.
For example, essays like "Putting on Airs," in which Berenbaum documents the years of research scientists have spent calculating exactly how much methane gas termites are responsible for producing (i.e.: how much termites fart), and "Inquiring Minds Want to Know" which details how often cockroaches make the pages of tabloid magazines, there is much for the non-entomologist to enjoy.
Of course Berenbaum deals with the more serious side of entomology as well, such as in the essay "Just Say Notoclontid?" that details the former president George Bush's plan to raid coca fields by dropping caterpillars from helicopters as part of his efforts on the "war on drugs," she just does it a little tounge-in-cheek.
Overall, Buzzwords is an educational book with a dose of humor, fun to read and, best of all, it won't leave you itchy all over!
