Book Description
Mr. Goodwrench meets the Marx Brothers in this laugh-out-loud collection of wisecracks, automotive first aid, and roadside philosophy. Tom and Ray have gathered the most outrageous and humorous segments from their weekly call-in radio show, including "Eggs Prestone," "Bad Hair Days," "Clinton Sends Vowels to Bosnia," "Gail, the Tollgate Fugitive," and the Tappet Brothers personal favorite, the tale of Max and his little Schnauzer.

What I like best about Tom and Ray.......2007-07-12
Face it, for most of us, our cars are our lives. The US post WWII is not as a rule built for pedestrians and if your car breaks down, you lose a lot of control over your world.
Tom and Ray take a situation that's very stressful for most people and turn it into something that even the most stressed out person can laugh about. Truth is--someday you are going to look back on most of the hard situations in your life and laugh. You might as well start while they're happening. Knowing that you could be next, you're laughing with the poor schmuck who's called Click and Clack for some automotive advice.
Plus, they do get some of the worst--and weirdest--cases around. My husband and I try to listen to "Car Talk" every Saturday morning and often will be commenting on the episodes through the next week. The "Car Talk" CDs are a great way to keep laughing when you need a break from a hard week.
Really the Best and Second Best of Car Talk.......2007-03-09
This was the best Car Talk cd I've ever heard! There are some real gems here!
I can't expect any better.......2007-01-09
Those Tappett Bros. really are something, this truly is their best album if they say so or not. Obviously the best place to waste your time listening to this CD is in your car, especially on long trips. just enjoy them the best you can.
cars and stuff.......2007-01-01
It would be a mistake to evaluate this double-CD as a stand-alone product.
Instead, it is the byproduct of an authentic American phenomenon. I've been fortunate to live all over. Believe me: Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers on National Public Radio could only happen here.
I find these guys hilarious. Not everyone will. To make a long story short, these Boston greasepit goons (one of them has a PhD from MIT) started a call-in radio show years ago in New England called 'Car Talk'. The audience would call in to ask questions about their cars, which these two brothers would answer after a bit of Socratic questioning from their seemingly limitless knowledge of automobile innards.
Little by little, people's car problems became the thin edge of the wedge for things much more interesting, personal, and hilarious. NPR picked up the show and it became required Saturday morning listening for gazillions of devotees.
Like any media phenomenon that inspires intense loyalty, Car Talk also generates detractors. They are legion.
But it would be a mistake not to give Click and Clack and their self-deprecating humor a chance. They so obviously love what they do. I love what they do, too. Some people don't. That's OK.
Just give'em a chance. My hunch is you'll soon be helpless with laughter along with the Magliozzi brothers and their cameo-appearing Mom.
Surprised at the Negatives Below..........2007-01-01
I guess you either love these guys or you hate them. My wife finds them incredibly annoying when she hears them on the radio.
Myself, I love them. Their accents are not off-putting to me, and I love how they laugh together.
What I've learned over time, though, is that the 'straight' answers they provide are actually pretty authoritative. They actually know what they're talking about, based not only on their extensive formal education but also based on their hands-on work with many, many cars.
If I personally found anything annoying, it's only their constant self-referencing which gets old. However, it's a part of their "shtick" which we would not want to do without...

Book Description
If a mountain man felt compelled to dance, how would he do it? If koala bears could talk, what would they say? And what’s the right pickup line, if you’re a necrophiliac? (Maybe “I’m pretty sure I’m not going to get you pregnant.”)
In the throes of debates like these, we’re lucky to have the learned people of McSweeney’s Internet Tendency, America's best low-budget humor website, and their edifying work. From their best-looking writers comes this collection of over three hundred lists, including...
“Signs Your Unicorn Is Cheating on You.”
"Errors in Communication Between My Hairdresser and Me, in the Form of What I Said and What He Heard"
"Things This City Was Built On, Besides Rock 'n' Roll"
"Things This One Girl Sitting Near Me in a Movie Theater Said Out Loud When One of the Characters Was Shown Pulling Into a Gas Station"
"Future Winners of the New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest"
"Adjectives Rarely Used by Wine Tasters"
"The Collected Apologies of Lawrence H. Summers, President of Harvard"
"Exactly What I Mean When I Say My Ex-Girlfriend Kristin and I 'Wanted Different Things from Life’"
And much, much more...

Has its moments.......2007-08-29
Being an avid reader of McSweeney's, I expected a bit more from their comic writers. Overall, the book is pretty good and rife with subtle humor, but many of the lists are flat. Not a book that will make you roar out loud, by any means.
Weird Mountain Man.......2007-05-27
Not what I was expecting. I found a book of lists, lists that were personal to the writer only, strange and non-factual lists. Very off-centered, quirky sorts of people will love this book.
A Fan's Note.......2007-04-26
"The Collected Apologies of Lawrence H. Summers, President of Harvard" is pure genius.

funny,absurd book.......2007-03-09
If you need a reason to laugh--buy this book. It is abook of absurd lists, a little tilted toward unicorns, and a fact book of German cities. My 18 year old daughter opened to a random page , and burst out laughing.Typical list would be,10 reasons it's funny to picture a dinosaur caught in a tornado.

Book Description
This book brings together the most important writing on television published in Quarterly Review of Film and Video, from classic essays by Nick Browne and Beverly Houston to the latest cutting-edge historical and critical research. It considers television's economics, technologies, forms, and audiences from a cultural perspective that links history, theory, and criticism. The authors are leaders in the field, and they address several key issues: the formative period in American television history; the relation between television's political economy and its cultural forms; gender and melodrama; and new technologies such as video games and camcorders. With this breadth of coverage, the book will bring basic and defining scholarship to the field of television studies.

Don't expect handholding in Cisco Routers for IP Routing as it explains the Internet Protocol (IP) suite and how to implement it with Cisco hardware and software. The key components needed to keep a network online are presented--addressing, subnetting, bridging, and routing--but this book assumes readers are generally familiar with the Cisco Internetwork Operating System (IOS) command-line environment, so it doesn't spend much time on the early familiarization process.
The bulk of each chapter contains practical information for setting up systems and solving problems, including lots of procedures and plenty of illustrative router output, plus insights on good design and administration practice. Readers will also find conceptual, hands-off material explaining what the various protocols do and how they do it.
Cisco Routers for IP Routing is rich in prose and presents complex topics with some fine conceptual diagrams. However, it explains only enough to help you understand the practical material that follows. For a really thorough understanding of IP concepts, supplement this manual with Thomas A. Maufer's more in-depth IP Fundamentals: What Everyone Needs to Know About Addressing & Routing. --David Wall
Book Description
Provides a complete systematic approach to network design, implementation, and troubleshooting with Cisco routers. Key technologies covered include Cisco Network Layer (OSI/RM), IP, IPX, Distance Vector Routing Protocols, Link State Routing Protocols, Multicast IP, and much more. Provides complete coverage of Cisco-specific troubleshooting tools including Cisco debug commands, traceroute, ping, and scripts.

Invaluable quick reference.......2002-12-22
I have read all the theory and lengthy samples from the CiscoPress books, now I need a quick reference to perform my day-to-day task as a Network Consultant. This book provided the quickest way to know the stuff in configuring Cisco Routers. This is a valuable book for those who plan to tackle the CCIE Lab exam.
Good enough to keep it as a reference........2002-11-21
The author did a great job of presenting the relatively basic information on IP routing as it applies to Cisco routers. You will find quite a few useful IOS commands discussed in the book that will want to keep it as a handy reference. I would also suggest looking into getting "Cisco IOS for IP Routing" by Andrew Colton. That book would take you deeper into mechanics of modern routing protocols (EIGRP, OSPF, IS-IS, BGP), along with a discussion of Cisco IOS commands.
Great For Filling In The Gaps, CCIE Prep.......2000-08-23
This book does an excellent job of calling small details to your attention that sometimes slide right by you when using larger books. Between this and Jeff Doyle's TCP/IP book, you'll be covered for the written exam and have a firm foundation for the lab. A must for your library and my compliments to the author!
Just Great.......2000-03-20
Why did this kind of book took so long to be published? The content is just what is missing in the Cisco Press publications, even better, this book is the first that offer a metodology for studying the Cisco stuff, generalizes the commands and make them easy to get along with them. The price is very reasonable and gives you better material in 474 pages than other with more than 500. If you are thinking about having a better understanding of the "Dark side of Cisco" take look at this an uncover them, they are unbelievably easy to understand with Rudenko.
Dont miss this book!.......1999-12-02
Ok. So you've got all the Cisco Press Books. And you think what good is one little black book going to make. This is one of the most practical books on Cisco so far. The other one written from a practical approach was a title by McGraw-Hill.
This book is a winner. The author literally packs so much information in so few pages! unbelievable.
This book covers almost everything : Bridging, Routing protocols, Frame-Relay, Redistribution etc.
Highly Recommended. You wont be sorry. Invaluable for the CCIE Lab. Get this book plus Bruce Caslow's.

The Atlas Of A Nation At War.......2006-05-18
Brought to us by the Civil War Preservation Trust, "Civil War Sites: The Official Guide To Battlefields, Monuments, and More," is just that, a wonderful guide to any and everything pertaining to the Civil War. It breaks down the nation into six major regions, from the Southern Heartland to the Northeast, and then breaks those regions into a state-by-state, city-by-city travel guide for anyone interested in the Civil War.
It includes admission fees(if any), hours of operation, directions, and a list of special events at each location. It gives a brief overview of each site and includes maps, website addresses, driving directions and plenty of other information that helps the reader in their travels.
Another wonderful aspect of this book is the sidebar commentaries provided by congressmen, historical tidbits such as the origination of "Dixie," and brief glimpses into the everyday life of the Civil War soldier.
I've visited many of the sites listed in this book, but just a quick glimpse into this book makes one realize just how much territory the War Between The States covered. Whether you follow in the footsteps of Billy Yank or tear-up when the band plays "Dixie," this guide is essential to anyone's journey through the tumultous events that comprised the American Civil War.
A thorough guide to everywhere Civil War.......2003-10-27
For any history buff in the United States, the Civil War has provided a plethora of places where history has taken place. This book takes these places and brings them all together in one package for a wonderful reference book. Organized by region then state and finally by town, the book takes you around the country a give you a thorough, sometimes too thorough, listing of sites related to the American Civil War. This guide goes beyond simple battlefields and monuments as listed in many guides. Rather it tries to show you all the related areas too, including museums with Civil War exhibits, and historical buildings that played any sized part in the war including as temporary headquarters or as battlefield hospitals. Sites include directions, web sites and hours to help you plan your visit. And each entry is given nearly equal weight, so a major battlefield and the buildings along the way are both noted. This book is a great overview for looking what's out there. Coupled with a good battlefield guide you are ready to trace a major part of US History.

Fascinating .......2006-09-23
Indian Life on the Upper Missouri consists of fifteen articles written by John Ewers brings to life the culture of the Native American culture in the Upper Missouri region. He covers everything from remembrances of the days before horses were introduced into the region to the artistic depiction of this culture in the twentieth century. His prose is clear and non-academic, although his subject matter is treated in a very organized and concise manner, similar to academic writing. This book would be useful both for the academic and the casual reader. The use of graphics ties well to the writing and is used to enlighten rather than just to illustrate.
I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in a study of the Indians on the northern reaches of the Great Plains.

Book Description
Historically, it is the land of the bison. But the land across which these powerful herds once thundered has been transformed. We know it today by such names as Montana, Wyoming, Dakota, western Iowa, and Nebraska-but it is really buffalo country, the land of the big sky rivers.
This book is a tale of two rivers, a history of the majestic Missouri and how it was once wedded to the Yellowstone. Though quite different today-one dammed into reservoirs, the other unregulated with a semblance of wildness-they were once linked ecologically, geographically, and historically. Then in the twentieth century, Euro-Americans dismantled many of these connections and attempted to uncouple the streams.
Viewing the rivers and their surrounding lands as a living system, Robert Kelley Schneiders focuses on four components within the Upper Missouri bioregion-the Missouri River valley, the Yellowstone River valley, Homo sapiens, and bison-to show the significance of their interaction over the past two hundred years.
To frame his story, Schneiders goes back to the nineteenth-century journals of fur traders and settlers, and in the record of flora, fauna, floods, and human activity he finds evidence of rapid and disruptive change. Bison once had the greatest influence on the land, and Schneiders depicts an original bison and Indian trail network on which were overlaid the first forts and towns and then the railroads, highways, and reservoirs that reconfigured the region forever.
Schneiders explains how these geographical constructs interacted with larger demographic and economic trends in the twentieth-century West, as dams and their resultant reservoirs enhanced the federal presence in the Dakotas and eastern Montana. He describes human encroachment on the rivers and tells why the Corps of Engineers dammed the Missouri but spared the Yellowstone. The engineers and their backers have so completely engineered the Missouri that few people today think of it as anything other than water. But we can reestablish our bonds to the river if we decide to let it flow once again, argues Schneiders. Removing the dams on the Missouri is the first step toward reasserting localism and grassroots democracy.
In what was once buffalo country, a dormant ecology awaits rebirth. A major work of environmental history, Big Sky Rivers offers a challenging vision for the future of the Upper Missouri bioregion.
Customer Reviews:
anti Euro-Americanism.......2007-09-24
The book contains a few interesting points about the Missouri and the Yellowstone rivers. Almost all of these are collected by the author from other works. Buffalo migration patterns for instance were news to me.
The rest of the book is a waste of time and paper, full of zany slams at what the author characterizes as "euro-americans". These are amusing for a short time, then tiresome.
Buy it used or nor at all.
Big Sky Rivers.......2006-10-01
The subtitle cites the Yellowstone and Upper Missouri as this book's subject matter. Upper Missouri is defined as the Missouri above its confluence with the Platte River. The book's basic precept is that the rivers set the rhythm for the region, although the author acknowledges the river's dependence on climate and weather. Before Europeans interfered on the natural systems, the bison moved in accordance to the rivers, and the humans (Native Americans) responded to the rivers and the bison.
The author appears to believe that almost everything the Europeans did constituted negative interference. Perhaps the biggest crime was damming the Missouri. However, nearly exterminating both the bison and the Native Americans was arguably worse. Plowing the land and building fences was not far behind. Include a good deal of governmental politics in the list of crimes. The book presents a great deal of research to support all these points. It is set into a holistic, ecological context. A quote from the final chapter captures the tenor of the book: "... maladjustment is most conspicuous in the present geography, which is out of sync with the Upper Missouri's ecological and hydrologic rhythms."
While I acknowledge the validity of the charges Mr. Schneiders levels against Euro-Americans, the conclusions reached are suspect. The ecological and political context is artificially constrained, almost as if the conclusions came first and drove the model that derived them. There were many factors; regrettable perhaps, but nevertheless uncontrollable; that drove Euro-American intrusion into the bison-culture of the Yellowstone and Missouri country. Factors just as powerful will keep humans from voluntarily reversing the changes they have wrought.
The author believes in removing dams and reintroducing free-roaming bison. This is in line with those who advocate the "Buffalo Commons." Admittedly, some arid land in the west is changing from farming to grazing, and in some cases bison are doing the grazing. However, to achieve Mr. Schneiders' recommended state, the cities and irrigated farmland along the rivers must virtually vanish. Human history in the United States, Europe, and around the world indicates that this is not going to happen.
This book is well-written. It contains a lot of factual history. However, unless pre-disposed to accept this book's conclusions, the reader will finish reading the book with the feeling that the time and effort spent could have been used better in other ways. The arguments presented are too weak to change many minds.
Customer Reviews:
Mountain man, fur trader and keen observer.......2005-01-04
Charles Larpenteur's capabilities as a writer, his presence in the American wilderness at a time when many were not literate, his submersion in the fur trade in positions of responsibility, all make him a unique, worthy read.
The reader is removed from the adventure fantasies and romance, carried into the day-to-day details of the life of a man who became a mountain man early in life and remained one until the trade was no longer a viable institution. A mountain man worrying about profit and loss far more than fights with wild tribesmen, a man who knows white men and studiously avoids being tricked or ruined by their wiles and their competition for trade with the Indians.
Larpenteur has been used as a reference by almost every work written about the fur trade, but his own work needs no references.
Read it.
A classic.......2001-09-13
Captivating! This is an accurate and vivid account of the day to day and year to year activities associated with the early American fur trade era. Pick up any book on this subject and you will find that this book is used as a reference. Larpenteur spent much of his time at the Fort Union trading post in present day Montana where the Yellowstone River empties into the Missouri. This is his story of how the actual trading was carried on, relationships with the Indians and resulting battles that oftentimes would occur, along with the inner relationships amongst the fur companies and military, the hardships which had to be overcome, etc. He shouldered heavy responsibilities and it is apparent that at times he would get somewhat down on himself for not accomplishing or meeting his goals. If he were alive today, he would see that his journal would erase all those self doubts and misconceptions that he had of himself. A great book.
