I had a well-used and beloved copy of this cookbook that I had received as a wedding gift 37 years ago. I had acquired many more cookbooks since, but this one was always my favorite. When it was lost due to hurricane Katrina, I really missed it. I am absolutely delighted with this new, updated version - it's even better than the older version I had. I would highly recommend this book!

One of the ones to read when you're only reading one.......2007-09-23

Betty Crocker Cookbook, 10th edition. It is what it is. It is a decent summary of 21st century American cooking, sufficient to the purposes of anyone who needs to make good meals and keep track of the nutrition involved. With the exception of the occasional (and, frankly, to my mind, unavoidable given the book's corporate affiliation -- I love the stuff myself) use of Bisquick, the book does not lean too heavily on convenience products. There's nutrition information. The selected recipes show a broad base of recipe selection. And at the end of the day, it's all competently done, with lots of useful sidebars and other information.

Beyond that, well, it's underwhelming. To put this in perspective, I have three+ shelves of cookbooks. It's hard for me, a devout cookbook reader for close to two decades, to really offer an objective judgement on something like this, because it's so basic it seems more or less redundant to me. You're not going to find much exotica in here (pad thai and ciabatta bread are about as far-out as it gets), but you will find enough to keep things interesting on a mac-and-cheese table. If you need a basic kitchen reference, it certainly serves that function admirably. There's plenty of pictures for help with techniques, and overall, it's a great first cookbook.

But it's hard to shake the feeling that there's a certain datedness to it -- it is, as I said, very prosaic in its recipe selection. It has the feel of a 1950s cookbook dropped through a timewarp with all of its recipes replaced with currently fashionable selections. What's worse is that it's more or less redundant with books like the Better Homes and Gardens Red Plaid and the America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook -- there isn't a whole lot about any of them to distinguish one from the other. Essentially, you can't go wrong with this book, but you'd be hard-pressed to go wrong with its competition either.

I just bought this for my newly married daughter. I think it's the best cookbook ever on the market. Love the ring binder format but can I offer one suggestion? Make it THREE holes instead so that we can add notebook pages to our books. I usually write a recipe on notebook paper and then put a sleeve over it but finding a hole punch is a hassle.

The Best Cook Book Ever!.......2007-03-19

I have bought this cook book in the past but it always ends up falling apart because of so much use. I bought one for my son who is batching it and then decided to get a new one for me, too (why not??) I love the way it not only gives you the recipe but also gives you pictures of what the finished product should and should NOT look like.

My only problem with the book is the plastic rake binding. It can break over time. However, the content of the book is super! Great for new cooks and old ones who have forgotten how to do things right! :)

My 18 year-old granddaughter may not know who Betty Crocker is, but for me the Betty Crocker Cookbook is a timeless favorite, which is why I purchased it for her for Christmas for her hope chest. Hope chest?....what's that?!! Ah, to be young again!

It does not provide retellings of American myths directly, but rather presents overview essays by expert folklore scholars of various U.S. regions, directs the reader to fully annotated bibliographies, offers a list of literary authors who incorporate folklore themes into their writings, presents the locations of folklore-related museums as well as a selection of folklore journals and websites, and much more. An excellent starting point for any campaign of intense personal research into a given American tall tale, and very highly recommended, especially for academic, public, and personal library reference shelves.

Eoghan Casey's text is immediately useful. It's not theory, it's practical. It's not biased to one operating system, but covers several technologies. Finally, Eoghan and the book's contributors do not gloss over today's most offensive topics, they address them with vigor and solutions.

I would share one concern: the chapter-long product/vendor discussion. Some reviewers label it marketing; other reviewers don't mention it at all. I'll just forewarn you that you will learn much more about EnCase or NFR than about their competitors.

As a security consultant for Hewlett-Packard, it seems my bookshelf fills up entirely too easily, especially as of the last few years. Therefore, I've gotten fairly selective with new book purchases (until I can get a new bookshelf). However, Casey's text is DEFINITELY worth getting - worth knocking another book off to make room. :)

I hope you enjoy this comprehensive text at least half as much as I do.

A step on.........2002-08-09

The 'Handbook of Computer Crime Investigation' follows on well from Eoghan Casey's previous title, 'Digital Evidence and Computer Crime' which I found to be a sound introduction to the subject. This latest book is targeted at those already proficient in Computer Forensics and provides in depth detail of techniques essential to any computer related investigation. Also included are sections specific to examining various operating systems. As someone who both works in information security and has a particular interest in computer forensics I can thoroughly recommend this book!

If you have any interest in the Partisan movement, the Jewish resistance, the Warsaw uprising, the White rose, Edelweiss Pirates, Oskar Schindler or anyone else that defied the nazi regime, you have to read this book. First off, this is not a bang bang shoot em up account of the Bielski brothers. This is more about the massive effort it took to move over 800 people-quietly- thru a forest crawling with thousands of Nazis whose only purpose was to find them. Truly, an amazing feat of logistics that can be marvelled at, but then to think that they did it more than once?!?! Unbelievable!

If you didnt know any better, you'd swear it was a work of fiction, moreover, after reading it, you are going to wonder why on earth are our children not taught about such brave souls! truly one of the more memorable and gripping books I have read in quite a while. get it, you will not be sorry.

Amazing, Powerful, Triumphant.......2007-03-21

This is the amazing story of three brothers; Tuvia, Asael and Zus Bielski, who made it their mission to save as many Jews as possible during World War II. They were somehow able to hide in the forest and save 1,200 or more Jews.

This is an incredible story, these three brothers worked so hard to achieve what was a seemingly impossible task. They were very organized, and their final camp was built like a village in the forest, complete with a blacksmith, a tailor, a barber, a bath house and a village square where dancers and singers performed. They endured freezing cold temperatures, near starvation and constant fear that they would be discovered and killed.

The writing was very clear and concise and events were laid out in a very logical and chronological order. There were many different people who came into the story and Peter Duffy did a wonderful job helping the reader keep track of them. He would often reiterate a story or description of an individual mentioned earlier.

I thought the story was an honest portrayal of the Bielski brothers, they were not portrayed as one dimensional but as many faceted and fallible people. Peter Duffy wrote about their mistakes as well as their success.

How horrible that these brave men who saved so many lives were not recognized as the heroes that they were.

This book has all the trappings for a major motion picture. ( In my version Joaquin Phoenix would play Aseal ;) I don't know why it doesn't catch like wildfire. It astounds me that the talents of these three brothers combined to make the unimaginable happen. How they could die in obscurity is pathetic. Tell your friends, make this book as big as it should be!

The story of Tuvia, Asael, and Zus Bielski and the village they built in the woods of Belarus, while waging a continual war against the Nazi occupiers and their anti-Semitic local collaborators, is an inspiring story proving that, contrary to what some people insist upon, there were those out there who did NOT let themselves be led like sheep to the slaughter. These men had been fighters since they were boys, unwilling to take guff or indignities from anyone, unafraid to defend themselves, even physically. They were not the stereotypical pale-faced yeshiva boys of Eastern Europe who ran and cowered from confrontation with anti-Semites.

The Bielski brothers were three of the dozen children (eleven surviving past childhood) born to David Bielski and Beyle Mendelavich of Stankevich, Belarus, in an area that, through all of the wars and territorial treaties in those years, often changed hands between the Russians, the Poles, the Belarussians themselves, the Soviets, and finally the Germans. Drawing on their background of defending themselves and not running away from people trying to harm them, the brothers took an active role in partisan activity after the Nazi occupation. Though the three of them had managed to find residence away from the Lida and Novogrudek areas where their parents and most of their siblings were, they could see that what was happening was no small stuff, wasn't liable to stop anytime soon, and cried out to be avenged fully. Rescuing as many of their own people as possible became even more imperative after the murder of their parents, two of their brothers, and Asael's wife and baby daughter. Against all odds, they gave shelter and protection to roughly 1,200 people, began a fully-functioning village in the forest, moved their people to safer locations several times (under active Nazi pursuit and flying bullets no less), made connections with the Soviet partisans, and got many of their residents out of the Lida and Novogrudek ghettoes. They were so successful at getting their people out of the two closest ghettoes, in fact, that 240 of 250 people left in the Novogrudek ghetto on the eve of a planned deportation escaped through a tunnel in a mass escape that was amazingly successful (150 survived and weren't killed in the Nazi gunfire that followed, and the few remaining hidden in the ghetto escaped several days later). Along the way, they had to contend with enemies on four fronts--the Nazis, pro-Nazi collaborators, Soviet partisans who weren't always on the same page as they when it came to why they were fighting the war, and internal dissention among their own people. So much of the Jewish community in the Nazi-occupied Soviet Union had been completely decimated (particularly since most of them had been murdered by Einsatzgruppen instead of being killed in ghettoes or camps where they at least had a small chance of survival), so it was an astonishing thing to see these 1,200 survivors come walking out of the woods in July of 1944 after the area was liberated by the Red Army. (Although it was never really said just how many of the Bielski siblings survived, apart from Tuvia, Asael, Zus, their baby brother Aron who worked as a scout in the woods, their sister Taibe, and an older brother in America; are we to assume they were killed or that some of them were also in the woods? We know two of their brothers were killed, but we're never told anything about the fates of most of their other siblings.)

There are those who claim that all books about the Shoah are just the same story over and over again, or are too depressing, but how many of those books are written about Jewish partisans who actively fought back and in the process also saved over a thousand of their own people, complete with creating their own village where life went on in (relatively speaking) normal circumstances? This is an inspiring story about three heroic brothers, not just some tale of sadness, woe, despair, and having to wait to be rescued by an outside force. I've also never read a book about the Shoah in Belarus; it's not too common to run across books with the Nazi-occupied USSR as the setting, seeing as how most of the people living there were murdered by the Einsatzgruppen early on, no chance of surviving the way someone in, say, Holland, France, or Hungary might have. This was hands-down one of the largest groups of Jews saved by anyone during the Shoah. It's about time these unsung heroes of the Shoah got more recognition.

These three brothers saved over 1200 Jews in Belorussia by making a home for them in the forest. They were tough as nails, and fought to save their people while fighting the enemy.

It's a dramatic story, and once read, you'll never forget the three brothers--Zus, Tuvia and Asael--nor their comrades-in-arms, nor the people they saved. It's a real testament to the survival of the human spirit.

The brothers witnesses such unbearable cruelty at the hands of the Germans and many local gentiles that they saw no choice but to fight if they were going to survive. Their fight included their protection of hundreds and hundreds of Jews. Through their charisma, organizing skills, and aggressiveness, they successfully accomplished their task. Along the way, however, it appears that they developed a certain hubris, a feeling of such self-importance that they became what can only be called tyrannical. Although there is a question of whether they or some of their people were unduly robbing the surrounding peasants and appeared less than completely with their Soviet sponsors, there is no question that they took what ever they wanted for themselves, including accommodations and women. Perhaps as with Moses, Tuvia committed such a cruel act upon the dissolution of the camp that he paid for it by becoming a failure in later life, never able to re-capture his former authority and self-satisfaction.

When the Germans finally retreated from Belarus in the summer of 1944, almost twelve hundred Jewish survivors of the Holocaust shocked the world by materializing from the forest where they had lived in hiding during the German occupation. Tuvia, Asael, and Zus Bielski, three brothers, had managed to establish a well-organized community in the forest which lasted for almost three years, protecting hundreds of Jewish citizens while wreaking havoc on their German occupiers. Author Peter Duffy places this extraordinary story of survival in context by describing the Bielskis' lives and achievements, quoting from Tuvia Bielski's previously unknown journal, and revealing the sociopolitical history, including the anti-Semitism, of Belarus, a region south of Lithuania.

In establishing their forest community, open to all Jews, the Bielskis had to fight "wars" on four fronts: the immediate threat from the Germans and the local police; the danger from local peasants and collaborators; the suspicions of Soviet partisans who questioned whether the Bielskis were sufficiently dedicated to their cause; and most of all, internal dissension. This was no "utopian community of enlightened democratic and egalitarian governance," and many readers may cringe at the extremes to which the leadership occasionally resorted in order to eliminate dissension.

At its height, the forest village consisted of long, camouflaged dugouts for sleeping, a large kitchen, mill, bakery, bathhouse, tannery, school, jail, theater, and two medical facilities. Tailors, seamstresses, shoemakers, watchmakers, carpenters, mechanics, and experts in demolition provided the 1200-member community with necessary skills, and about sixty cows and thirty horses provided food and transportation. Many of the men served as part of the armed contingent which secured food and engaged in sabotage and the murder of Germans officials.

By concentrating on one family and its life during the war, Duffy creates a powerful documentary about Jewish life. Breaking the narrative into six-month installments, he details the progress of the war throughout the region, relentlessly revealing cold statistics--the thousands of people killed in a single ghetto in a single day. As the numbers mount, the reader's horror at the immense scale of the genocide grows, the victims' utter helplessness becomes obvious, and the reader's amazement at the Bielskis' achievement increases. None of the Bielski brothers ever received public recognition for these heroic efforts, and Duffy's attempts to rectify this historical omission by telling their story will resonate with readers. Native American perpsectives of the Great Sioux war.......2007-01-10

This is a wonderful book.The War is reviewed by the warriors, wise men and tribe members.To see it through their eyes plus the scholarship of the author is really amazing. Someone once said that history is always written by the victors, but the honesty and balance of this book belies that.
Jerome A. Greene is a splendid writer and historian and has added an excellent volume to the canon of books already published on the subject. Thanks Amazon for making my aware of its existence.

An excellent readable introduction to archeology.......2001-09-28

I never read a textbook I liked--until now. The book is easy to read, actually _fun_ to read, and full of valuable examples and information. You don't get overloaded with lots of data, but it has enough to give you a good idea of the archeological methods being described. There are lots of real-life examples too, and that makes the text interesting. The best part of the book is that it explains _why_ archeologists do what they do, not just what they do. I read it before going to a field school, and it gave me exactly the background I needed. It would be a great book for anyone looking for a short, clear, and fun introduction to archeology.

Great for elementary archaeological research concepts.......2001-08-26

As the name says, this book is brief, and the material strictly introductory. This is not intended as a debasement of its value; on the contrary, it allowed me to have a more coherent picture of the project I am involved in now as a volunteer, especially with regard to the means and objectives of the research process. The simple and lucid text was a breeze. I finished the book cover-to-cover in just three nights, and though I have no background in this field, I dare say that I am now comfortable with the elementary concepts and some of the jargon used. I have tried textbooks before, but I usually find them too thick. Note though that this book is definitely not a substitute for a conventional textbook. For a proper grounding, more advanced material is required, which is where the numerous annotated references provided may prove helpful. More links to other sources are available on the companion website; as for the exercises, they are more of a revision which you can skip if your memory is not too bad and your attention is not diverted while reading. I feel that the book will be helpful to students who want something to start them off with, and people like me who require some working knowledge but do not want to spend too much time studying.
