applicable even after Y2K.......2007-07-26
A great read and informative even for someone knowledgeable on the topic.
He gets a little crossed up when it comes to KW hrs and KW but what the heck, the book is so thorough otherwise that you have to cut the guy some slack. It still gets a 5 in my book.
Boston on Surviving.......2007-07-17
I've recommended Boston's books to several people, and those who bit were very thankful. Boston is knowledgeable and fun to read: read the fine print of the subtitle! My wife was especially happy I found this book and was not turned off by the Y2K part of the title, since it opened my eyes to how much better a father I can be. It's not really about computer crashes, but rather how to become educated the way Americans were a few generations ago...how to survive. In many ways we've lost the ability to do just that, the further we get from the Depression or a war which makes demands of the populace. How would your family get along without public utilities or grocery stores? It's not a book of fear-mongering but of common sense and thinking ahead. Unless you're a farmer and hunter on 40 acres, you'll likely learn much from Boston. You might even develop a new, fun hobby which will improve your quality of life, regardless what the future holds.
One of the best survival manuals ever........2006-10-08
I just bought this not to long ago and it was worth every penny.
It's much better than many books that claim to actually be the end all be all of prepardness. From food storage, putting some gold away in case the bottom drops out of our economy and a detailed explanation on gold and silver, firearms, ammunition, off road vehicles, communications, power and light, advice on medical kits, transportation, what people should be considered threats, where to move and what advantages a certain area can do for you and your family, it's in there.
Although the title has Y2K in there, it only has a couple chapters on Y2K and the rest of the book is still valid. There is also quite a bit about how fragile our society is and why a disaster can have far reaching and long lasting effects and why you should prepare for such an emergency.
Buy this if you're looking for a prepardness manual, you won't be disappointed. It's alot better than most of the other manuals out there. I should know, I've wasted a few bucks here and there and have bought some of those other manuals that claim to cover everything. And if you buy 3 books on this subject, you'll end up with a dud as well. This book actually does cover everthing you should think about before, during and after a disaster.
It's a classic and I'll be keeping it.
Not just for Y2K.................2005-06-01
This is an excellent book to get you ready for whatever is coming--computer collapse after a cyber terror attack, a civil uprising locally or nationally, bad weather or just everyday living. The chapters on food and electricity are worth the price alone. I recommend you also buy "Boston's Gun Bible" for an in depth look at guns you need, though this book hits well enough for those that are not "gun nuts". It gave me valuable insight on what I need versus what I THOUGHT I needed.
Well worth the money. I am thinking of buying several copies for gifts to family members!

Subtitled The Science Lover's Illustrated Guide to How Life Grows, Develops, Reproduces, and Gets Along, The Way Life Works is what happens when a biologist and artist share an interest in life from bacteria to humans, and collaborate on taking their knowledge public. The result is a most magnificent science book, devoted to the wonder and unity of the natural world. The chapters start with Patterns and Energy, continue with Information, Machinery, Feedback, and Community, and end with Evolution. Each is superbly written, delightfully illustrated, and supremely informative.
Take the chapter on energy and its explanation of ATP, a.k.a. the conversion of light energy into chemical energy. The metaphor is dance, with an illustration showing electrons as jitterbuggers in the Chloroplast Ballroom. The text explains that
as the lights spin and the band breaks into "Sugar Jump," the dancers go wild. Suddenly a bystander inspired by a couple on the floor gets dancing feet. This in turn excites a second bystander to dance and before long a chain reaction takes place, each new dancer energizing the next bystander.
It's a brilliant start to a lucid explanation of a subject that plunges many a biology student into a panic, here made so readily accessible that readers, ages 10 to 100, can come away with a working mental model of the process. And so it goes for division of cells, DNA double helixes, fermentation, and the adaptation of genes. Hoagland and Dodson have succeeded in producing that most beauteous of reference books, the resource that makes you interested in what you had thought was dull as dishwater, then, once you're hooked, raises your understanding to a high standard of comprehension. It's a truly laudatory work of science and art. --Stephanie Gold

Biology concepts explained.......2005-08-16
The illustrations and text are so clear at explaining the concepts of biology that I recommend this book to everyone I know with a high school kid. I used this as my basic text for a class for homeschoolers on cell biology. My little geek daughter has read and reread this book from the age of 8 or 9, and at the age of 12 (with some other study) got a 750 on the SAT II Biology test. Hoaglund really knows how to explain life science. I especially recommend the section explaining how life staves off entropy to allow building of complexity. I learned more from this little book than from high school Biology.
Absoultely Inspirational and enlightening.......2003-06-20
This book is a masterpiece. It opens up your eyes and your imagination in such a fation, you will understand many concepts that otherwise an ordinary person like myself couldnt put together sciencewise. Thanks so much to the Authors. Big talent.
very good book for 10-15 years old.......2002-01-18
This book managed to take my 12 years old away from TV and PS2.
I wish I know more of such books. I thought that Brief History of Time would do same trick. No, he got stuck in it. So I will keep looking.
Great Book!.......2000-08-06
A great book to read with wonderful cartoon illustrations. As a high school science teacher, I've also found this book invaluable for teaching hard to grasp concepts.
The best book I ever read!.......2000-07-19
Style is awesome!. The graphics and analogies are so well done that almost anybody without previous biology knowledge can get the full picture of the basics (and even some level of detail) of molecular and cell biology after reading this book. The level of abstraction is so good that sometimes I had to stop to think about what I read to get the real dimension that the writers wanted to expossed. It is a real master piece describing life (as life and not as an specific species) in its full dimension. Congrats to the authors!, I have read so many books, but I can't remember one with such an in depth, simply and universal style. That book is worth far more than the $20 I paid for it.

Book Description
This second volume on carbonate reservoirs completes the two-volume treatise on this important topic for petroleum engineers and geologists. Together, the volumes form a complete, modern reference to the properties and production behaviour of carbonate petroleum reservoirs.
The book contains valuable glossaries to geologic and petroleum engineering terms providing exact definitions for writers and speakers. Lecturers will find a useful appendix devoted to questions and problems that can be used for teaching assignments as well as a guide for lecture development. In addition, there is a chapter devoted to core analysis of carbonate rocks which is ideal for laboratory instruction.
Managers and production engineers will find a review of the latest laboratory technology for carbonate formation evaluation in the chapter on core analysis. The modern classification of carbonate rocks is presented with petroleum production performance and overall characterization using seismic and well test analyses. Separate chapters are devoted to the important naturally fractured and chalk reservoirs.
Throughout the book, the emphasis is on formation evaluation and performance.
This two-volume work brings together the wide variety of approaches to the study of carbonate reservoirs and will therefore be of value to managers, engineers, geologists and lecturers.

The person going by A reader it wrong this book has rightfully earned the bluntman and chronic name, anyone who has read the entire book would know. This person going by a reader probly skiped every other line.
Gotta love those stoner (...)and fart jokes!! .......2004-09-02
Okay so it's no William Shakespeare or Alan Moore but it's not suppose to be. Its crude humor at it's best. You really have to be a Kevin Smith fan to enjoy it. The artwork is pretty cool but I would much rather have seen Mike Allred do the book since he did the art in the movie, Chasing Amy. But we are graced with his pop art at the end with the one-shot Smith and Allred did awhile back. The only down side I guess is that it really doesn't take anything serious at all. In Smith's movies we usually get (...)jokes but there is always a serious side to it. But I don't think Smith was trying to do anything other than make us laugh with this book. If you want a serious side of Kevin Smith in comics go read his DareDevil or Green Arrow runs, but if you're looking for some good old fashion stoner, (...)jokes then this is for you. A must own for any Kevin Smith fan.
Snootch To The NOOTCH!.......2003-09-26
This is excellent. It is very funny, and I love the art style.ALL U DIE HARD KEVIN SMITH FANS [God Bless you all] THIS IS A MUST HAVE!!!! BUY NOW!!!
Love Kevin Smith, but not this collection.......2002-08-27
As much as I enjoy the self-referential humor in Kevin Smith's films, comic books and TV show, the BLUNTMAN & CHRONIC graphic novel--for me, anyway--represents the point where the snake head is finally eating its own tail. So ridiculously navel-gazing as to make even JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK seem accessible to non-Smith fans, this was a real disappointment, particularly since the CLERKS comics are so funny even if you don't know all of the View Askew minutia.
I'm thrilled that the upcoming JERSEY GIRL will be Smith's break from his enclosed universe, because B&C shows a deep well running very dry.
The Hemp Knight Returns!!.......2002-03-05
Finally, the LONG delayed Bluntman & Chronic Graphic Novel!! Was the wait worth it? Oh yea!!
Kevin Smith and Mike Avon Oeming (Under the guise of Banky Edwards and Holden McNeil) deliver big laughs as they tell the origin of the "Queer Duo" and their arch-enemies, whose group name is hilariously unprintable (At least here....). Comic book lovers will especially enjoy the loving jabs Smith takes at the origins of Green Lantern, Spider-Man, Captain America, and Daredevil, among others. The book also includes the hard-to-find story from Oni Double Feature, in color for the first time. All in all, a great book, loaded with laughs. (And MUCH more obscene than you could ever imagine!!)

Customer Reviews:
WELL WRITEN WELL DONE. VERY INFORMATIVE.......2006-07-22
I enjoyed every page of this one. Not being an expert in this field, I certainly cannot vouch for each and every fact the author has given us, but the several facts I did take the time to further research proved the athor correct. The book is well written and in fact is quite a page turner. This is one of those I hated to stop reading and was rather sorry when I had finished it. It is important to understand this past era in order to understand where we are today. The consequences of the actions taken at that time are still being felt even to this day. Highly recommend this one.
Very Impressive.......2006-06-04
I am extremely impressed by the way Robinson conveyed the history of those tumultuous times in such a captivating manner. This work is rich in facts: both large and small, and all interesting. Aside from Templar history, I really appreciated Robinson's ability to clearly explain the major and minor players and the political machinery and machinations of all sides involved (Muslim factions, Hospitallers, Vanetians, the Popes, etc etc). Reading this work is a real learning experience, and Robinson's great writing is far from dry. After reading this book I will surely continue to read Robinson's other works.
Phenomenal - This is a must read .......2006-05-24
Where to start? This is a fantastic piece of work that takes you through the rise and fall of Templars. I would rate it better than Da-vinci code because this is no fiction. It is remarkable that a non-fiction work packs so much action and thrills. This is also the best account of Crusades that I have ever read. In addition, the author also touches upon the personal codes that governed the life of Templars (like the chastity belt, rules against bathing etc). All in all, I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested about Crusades or Templars
Good book, but there are better ones out there.......2006-03-05
John Robinson does a very good job in complining information about the Templar and presenting it in an interesting and readable fashion. I thoroughly enjoyed reading more about the Templar (and Robinson does include many details not found in the other Templar books I have read, contrary to those reviewers who claim it is all old material).
What I liked best about this book was its emphasis on context. Robinson does not just give an account of the Templar's doings; he provides an account of all the things which are happening around the Templars as well, which is essential for understanding the Templar.
I also liked Robinson's clear writing style. Some history book get you bogged down with dates and names, but Robinson does an excellent job of tying them together and helping you remember them so that events further into the book will make much more sense.
There are also two complaints I have about this book:
1. There are a number of small, careless mistakes which really should not have been there (i.e. slightly misquoting people, slightly incorrect dates, etc.) and which are rather annoying. As far as I can tell, none of his information is majorly wrong; he just does things like writing that events happened several weeks after another event when it was actually many months, so I guess it's not really a big deal.
2. He seemed rather biased against the Catholic Church. I myself am not Catholic, but even I do not think some of the things that they did were quite as bad as Robinson makes them out to be. For example, his comments to the effect that the charges of homosexuality against the Knights were very probably true because they had vows of chastity are simply underestimating the effect of religion upon people's lives and are just plain stupid. If the Templars couldn't take being chaste anymore, it is not very likely that they would choose to become homosexuals violating the ordinances of the Church rather than simply violating the laws of the Templar.
In conclusion, this was a very good book, but I think that there are better books on the subject out there. I would recommend Stephen Howarth's The Knights Templar. His book is slightly shorter (and thus has a little less detail), but it is also more accurate and is much more fun to read.
Overall grade: B+
Knights Templar 201 .......2005-04-28
Several readers have trashed this book, one saying 'Same old song in a new cover'. That reviewer then goes on to recommend two books written 10 years later.. That's probably why he thought that this was 'old'. While I can't compare this book to anything by Runciman or Tuchman, I will say that this is a pretty good book.
Before you buy this book, please pay attention to the title.. It is called 'Dungeon, Fire, & Sword The Knights Templar IN THE CRUSADES' In order to understand the impact of the KT in the crusades you have to understand the crusades themselves, and in order to understand the crusades, you need to understand the 'players', culture geography etc... The Crusades didn't revolve around the KT, they only played a part, albeit an integral one, in the crusades.
Yes this book is more than just the KT, and no it's not an in depth history of each of the crusades, but it's not supposed to be.. The reader should use this book as a building block about the KT, the crusades and even the Papal State.
What is interesting is that the more one reads about the KT the more you realize that there really is a lot of uncertainty and disagreement surrounding them. In his book, Howarth writes that the master of the Templars was never called the Grand Master, yet that is how Robinson refers to them. There were a few other descrepencies between the two books but nothing major.
The maps (all 3 of them) were ok. The tables of the 'players' in the back of the book were helpful.
I recommend this book.. Could you do better? Maybe, but with all of the junk that they are publishing about the KT these days you could do a heck of a lot worse.
Product Description
From the Publisher With more colorful characters and startling plot twists than the most dramatic of novels, John J. Robinson's Dungeon, Fire, and Sword immerses the reader in an historical era where the blood flows freely, tribal antagonisms run deep, and betrayal lurks around every corner. The time is the Crusades and the place is the Middle East, where a fearless band of monk-warriors called the Knights Templar have vowed to protect Christian pilgrims to the Holy Land. The story of their faith and courage - and the horrors of their ultimate betrayal - has resonated throughout history. A vivid and gripping account of that incredible time, Dungeon, Fire, and Sword is a brilliant work of narrative history. Here are some features of the book: Separates fact from the large amount of fiction that surrounds the Knights Templar. Offers valuable insights into the people and politics of the Middle East that are strikingly relevant today. Filled with famous figures such as Richard the Lionhearted, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Thomas Aquinas, Marco Polo, and Genghis Khan. Explores the question of missing Templar treasure and whether a secret succession of underground grand masters exists to this day.
Customer Reviews:
EXCELLENT AND INFORMATIVE READ.......2006-07-22
Not being an expert in this area, I certainly cannot vouch for each and every fact and item the author has offered us. But I can state that this is quite a well written book and from what I can tell, well researched. I have taken the time to check of several of the facts the author has given us, and so far, have failed to find any fault. This is a fascinating story about a fascinating group of men during a rather important era in our history. We are still reaping the consequences from the actions taken in those days. To understand what is happening in the world today, I feel it is important to understand how we got here and this work sheds light on that subject. Like another reviewer here, I would also have appreciated more maps and certainly mor source references. Overall though, I found this work to be quite good, quite imformative and I feel very wothwhile. Highly recommend.
Chivalry, barbarity, courage, cowardice, honor, & treachery........2004-12-22
I have never read a more enlightening history than this one. In one medium sized book I have had a whole lot of conceptions and assumptions destroyed, and many questions and uncertainty have replaced them. This is simply the result of a very well written and informative book.
I had always heard clues and hints about the "Knights Templar" but never understood the import of this military order. I had also never understood the plight of the crusader states, nor the politics of the era or the region in question until reading this book. The author's entertaining and comprehensive yet not overly detailed history has changed that shortcoming in a profound and I hope.....lasting fashion.
Mistakes are documented as well as triumphs. Victories as well as defeats are recorded in detail. I have been in turn, inspired, disgusted, chagrined, and dismayed at events, tellingly portrayed by the author. I do fault the author in one area, poor (aka nonexistent) documentation of original sources. More maps would have been nice as well, however the history is still easy to follow along with a general knowledge of regional topography of the "Holy Lands". While there are maps included, none are regional, and they are only provided for a few battles.
In conclusion, I highly recommend this book as an introduction to the history of the Templars, the crusades in the Holy Land, and the Crusader states (and their downfall) as well.
