When I was in AP English, in high school, my teacher told me to get this book and I'd be set. "This covers MLA and APA," she said. "MLA is the most widely-used, but you may need APA, too. There's also another guide, Turabian's, but that's just awful. We had to use it when I was in college and I hated it. Thankfully, no one uses it anymore."

I had to buy Turabian's for my first paper in college.

Anyone who is planning on going into any field of medicine will need this book not only to comprehend APA format, but for any paper that you will need to write. I am the chairperson of the English Department of a private high school, and as a department we require our students to purchase a copy of this book. It has made teaching research assignments much easier, as well as giving teachers, across the curriculum, a standard by which to grade. It includes excellent examples of citations, especially for electronic resources. We encourage all students to keep this book as a collegiate handbook.

The book covers many legal situations. More than most people should have to deal with in a lifetime.

The book gives a high level discussion of the pertinent issues. In a situation where you need legal advice, this book can help you know what types of questions to ask. It can also help you understand why the attorney is doing what he is doing.

However, this book will NOT provide legal advice. It will not qualify you to plead your own case in front of a judge. In that respect, it can be a little misleading. Otherwise it is pretty good.

This book presents a number of selected papers given at the LB9 conference, held in Potsdam, Germany, in August 2000. It is dedicated to new techniques and methodologies for studying interfacial layers. One group of manuscripts deals with the application of surface plasmons at solid interfaces, used for example in resonance spectroscopy and light scattering. New applications of various types of Atomic Force Microscopy are reported making use of various modifications of tips. A number of chapters are dedicated to light emitting diodes built with the help of LB layers. The aim of these studies is the improvement of efficiency. Electrochemical methods were described as tools for developing sensors, in particular miniaturised pH or gas sensors.

The application of synchrotron X-ray and NMR techniques have been described in detail in two extended chapters. It is demonstrated how molecular information can be detected by these methods for various types of interfacial layers.

This monograph, along with 130 papers that have been submitted for publication in the special issues of relevant journals, represent the proceedings of the LBP conference.

Dixieland Sushi...falls flat.......2007-05-14

I really enjoy Cara's books and I expected this one to be just as good as her previous ones. I was wrong! I couldn't get past the second chapter as the book was just non-sensical and didn't appeal to me at all. It just seemed like random, jumbled thoughts and comments were thrown onto pages and labeled a novel.

Bi-Racial in the South.......2007-05-09

Jen Taylor lives in Dixieland Arkasas-the product of a Japanese American mother and a European-American father. This leads Jen to some interesting dilemas as some people assume that she is Latin American or when people find out her middle name (Nakamura) they make fun of it.

Jen spent much of her childhood in love with-and trying to win Kevin Peterson-to no avail. Later Jen, who is a T.V. producer gets a shock when she gets an invite to his wedding to her blond haired blue eyed cousin Lucy.

Jen convinces her friend Riley to come to the wedding with her and the stuff that happens along the way make Dixieland Sushi an interesting book to read.

This was a fun book with lots of different facets. Going back to your hometown and seeing your high school crush again, and being rather surprised by how he's changed and you yourself have changed. Her multicultural background and how she dealt with being different while growing up. Lots of funny moments, and the book was so entertaining, it was read very quickly.

A truly thorough work on siege warfare.......2007-06-29

I really love this book. It is very detailed, and you get the impression Nossov knows everything there is to know about the subject of ancient and medieval siege warfare. He is also very clear about his sources, and doesn't throw in his own theories without telling you explicitly. It is a scientific work written by a scientist. If you, like me, enjoy the tales of great medieval wars, this book is excellent background matrial.

Beautifully illustrated but..........2007-05-15

When a friend told me about this book and it's beautiful illustrations, I was so excited I practically rushed out to buy it. It was unfortunately, not available at the local bookstore at the time so I ordered it on Amazon.

It is certainly a very well written book and the many illustrations help a great deal in explaining and demystifying many of the more complicated details of siege mechanisms. However, as seems to be fairly common in scholarly works on catapults and siege weaponry is the total absence of anything beyond the limited boundaries of the Greco-roman, medieval European and middle-eastern world. There is only passing mention of the early eastern levered catapults, and none at all of catapults from the other world civilisations which employed and developed catapults, or that there exists records in other cultures of catapults that pre-date the 399 B.C. catapults of Syracuse.

This book, while richly illustrated and extremely well researched, is only narrowly focused on one aspect of the development of siege warfare, somewhat not in agreement with the comprehensive nature suggestive nature of the book title.

A Beautiful Book.......2006-01-16

Sub-Title: A Fully Illustrated Guide to Siege Weapons and Tactics ==This is a beautifully illustrated book on the seige weapons used by most of the major armies from Ancient Egypt through the mid 1400's. It is surprisingly detailed. It is based, in the early days at least, on drawings carved into rock. These have been re-sketched so that the points he is trying to make. In the more recent times, printed materias were used and these make pictures that are (somewhat) more clear. Finally an artist Vladimir Golubev (I presume) made a series of absolutely beautiful color drawings to illustrate various siege engines.

The written part was done by Dr. Nossov and originally published in Russian. It is clearly a work of schlorship that may become the standard by which others are compared in future years. Certainly I have never seen a more complete or better written description of these engines.

Paul Strathern (Nietzsche in 90 Minutes, Plato in 90 Minutes) has turned his attention from big philosophers to big ideas, specifically Einstein and Relativity. (Other titles in his Big Idea series include Hawking and Black Holes and Newton and Gravity.) Like Strathern's previous books, Einstein and Relativity makes for good company at a coffee shop or on the bus, with its slick cover and fluid prose.

Not surprising for its size (just over 100 short pages), the book focuses more on the man than the science, recounting anecdotes that shaped Einstein's personal and intellectual growth. Tales of him as a quirky, curious youngster flow naturally into his days of iced coffee and pipe smoking in Zurich and run-ins with professors. The bulk of the book, though, deals with Einstein's annus mirabilis, 1905, when his three most influential papers were published, and the years of struggle, then criticism, then praise, that followed.

If you're looking for a good, readable primer on relativity, you're better off with Brian Greene's The Elegant Universe (and you'll learn about superstrings and the GUT, to boot). But if you just want to get acquainted with Albert Einstein and gain some familiarity with his work, Einstein and Relativity does the trick, and fast. --Paul Hughes

A very readable short look at the life and work of Einstein.......2007-02-12

Strathern gives more space in this book to the life of Einstein than to his scientific work. Still he manages to give capsule descriptions of the four great papers of the annus mirabilis of 1905. He also discusses 'General Relativity' and tells an interesting story of how Einstein was in ecstasy for days after hearing about the confirming experiments in 1919. It was that event which made Einstein the mythic figure. Strathern claims that Einstein saw the absurdity in the idol- worship around him but also knew how to play the part of the 'distracted scientist' to the hilt.
I learned much about Einstein's life that I did not know. There are touching personal elements. His son Edward had been closely connected to him and then came to hate him when Einstein was divorced. There is not a lot about the familial situation, but apparently Einstein was not a cad. He gave his Nobel money the huge sum of thirty- two thousand dollars to his first wife, the mother of his children.
Strathern paints a picture of Einstein's life from 1919 on as a sad one. The whole story of his search for a unified - field- theory the publication of results which met with scientific silence. Einstein's famous 'God does not play dice' rejection of Quantum Theory is seen by Strathern as key element in his scientific isolation.
Strathern is very good in presenting the development of the young Einstein. Einstein virtually taught himself everything. His brief experience as the only Jewish child in a tough German military school made him a rebel and opponent to authority for life. Einstein went his own way asked his own questions, and changed our whole picture of the physical world by his doing so.
Strathern also commends Einstein for his letter warning about the dangers of the Bomb. He does not however say anything about the key role Einstein played in having Roosevelt move ahead with the Chicago Project to build the Atomic Bomb. Strathern also commends Einstein a lifelong Zionist for his wife refusal of the offer to be President of Israel. This kind of public role was of course unsuited to the character of Einstein.
This is a short book and there are many Einstein books which will provide far more information and analysis. But like all Strathern's books it is very well and clearly written, and a fine small book indeed.

the theory that lead to a masacare.......2004-09-04

This book, while interesting to read was a little basic in the scientific knowledge it displayed. It spent too long on Einstein's background and his general history and not enough on his ground breaking ideas that changed the view from the classical physics of Newton's era. The book describes Einstein's struggle for intellectual knowledge; how he was bored at school and ended up being expelled for not trying hard enough.

The book, while centring on Einstein does give concise information on the other physicists of his time and how there work helped Einstein's. Strathern discusses the scientific work done by such influential people as Heinrich Hertz, Max Plank and Isaac Newton.

Einstein's most famous theory, that of his paper on `General Theory of Relativity' is described by Strathern in an easily understood way but the skeleton of the theory remains. Einstein's theory is basically that over vast distances space and time become relative, only the speed of light remains constant. The formula that Einstein achieved and which eventually led to the bomb was that e = mc2 where e is energy released, m is mass and c is the speed of light. Also as a result of this theory scientists have been able to trace the history of the universe to within a fraction of a second after the Big Bang. Einstein's theory of relativity is truly one of the most revolutionary theories on parallel with that of Newton law and Darwin's theory of revolution.

Unfortunately while Einstein's work led to huge developments in physics and him being awarded the Noble Prize for physics in 1921 it also led to the worlds most powerful weapon and the ultimate killing machine; the atomic bomb. While Einstein warned Roosevelt in 1939 about the splitting of the atom his anti-nuclear stance led to him being investigated by the FBI and denounced by McCarthy.

Strathern has written this book in a historical and descriptive style; while also keeping the reader of the book informed about Einstein's work it does not over work his theories and instead keeps them short and to the point. Strathern uses an approach to Einstein that does not scare the reader of and entices them to read more. It is both understandable to the non-scientists while also being informative enough for those who want a more in depth view into Einstein.

If one wants a book based purely on Einstein's work this is not the one to read; but for the more curious reader who wants an introduction to life and work of a genius then the book will fulfil them.

A short historical summary... certainly not worth it's cost........2000-08-16

Paul Strathern is known for concise "in a nutshell" publications, such as his excellent "The Philosophers in 90 Minutes" series of books. However, "The Big Idea" doesn't live up to that legacy, and anybody with a few moments and an internet connection can find all sorts of web pages that are more elucidating than his "Big Idea" books.

While his books provide a historical viewpoint that presents pertinent background information about each subject, one is certainly better off with books such as The Elegant Universe, by Brian Greene which does everything Strathern tries to do but with much more substance (and all in just the first few chapters).

Strathern's "Big Idea" books, with their large 14-pt print are elementary\middle-school level reading; and while they would probably make great educational gifts, they don't have much value outside that age group.

Final verdict: If you're interested in physics and relativity, there read "Relativity Visualized" by Epstein or "The Elegant Universe" by Green; or better yet, spend some time browsing the net and you'll be surprised at what you can find.

This study focuses on Ethiopia's attempt at introducing soil conservation and afforestation innovations aimed at reversing the process of degradation of its agricultural resource-base. It considers the tenure ambiguity, uncertainty, and insecurity stemming from the state ownership of land under which these innovations were attempted. It tells the story of how rural people responded to the project-induced adoption of measures to protect the land even though their holdings remained under a constant threat of reallocation. This story concerns issues arising from over-population, revolution, agrarian reform, population relocation, land reallocations, internationally financed projects, and not least, civil war.

Questions of soil conservation and afforestation, and land tenure are issues of fundamental importance to the millions of rural families in Ethiopia. In fact, in the long-run, they may be more may be as important to the people of several Sahelian and Sub-Saharan African nations that have opted for state ownership of land. The study deals with the variety of ways in which institutional arrangements such as property rights regimes directly and indirectly influence the outcome of attempts at externally inducing innovations, and contribute in defeating the intentions of planners as well as their new strategies. In this study, I take exception to a good part of what the soil conservation and afforestation program in Ethiopia has done; but, in no way do I wish to question the personal motives of the overwhelming majority of the people that worked for it.

The present work is a cumulative product of my involvement with the study of the social aspects of environmental degradation and conservation issues spanning over the past 12 years. In the course of this period, I have been involved in a number of studies looking at different socio-economic aspects of soil conservation and afforestation in Ethiopia and, to a small extent, also in Kenya (see references).
