4 out of 5 stars Great book but out of date........2004-05-03

This book is great, but little out of date. Cisco has released many new hardware as well as software wireless technology. I recommend "Managing and Securing a Cisco® Structured Wireless-Aware Network" which is the updated version.

3 out of 5 stars With out the Cisco AP Family..........2004-04-14

There isn't any word on new Cisco AP family based on IOS software.
This is a problem today.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for WLAN configs.......2003-06-23

Like many people, I set up my first wireless network without any instruction. I used the cheapest equipment available. As you read or reference sections in this book, you realize that by using good quality equipment you increase reliability and services within your WLAN.

The book is clearly written and is easy to use as a reference. That said, I have read the book from cover to cover.

The book gives detailed information about settings on Cisco devices such as the 340 and 350 series. Although the wireless field - specifically IEEE 802.11b - is changing rapidly, this book contains information that is great for intermediate to advanced wireless network installers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent review of Cisco WLANs!.......2003-06-20

While this book is slightly out of date (Cisco has released some new WLAN equipment since it was published), it still presents a wealth of information on Cisco WLAN components. Even if you are totally new to the field of WLANs, the book spends the first two chapters covering WLAN technology and concepts. After that, you are off to the races with Cisco specific products. The reamining seven chapters covers network design, wireless bridges, access points, client adapters, WLAN security and accessories. A great deal of information. In addition, if you are interested in obtaining either or both of the Cisco WLAN specialization certifications (WLAN Field Engineer and WLAN Design Engineer), then I can say from experience that this book is a must read to help pass the tests. Once again, another great book from Syngress!

2 out of 5 stars needs to be updated.......2003-04-21

Although good, It does not have documentation on Access Point 1200 and new authentication mechanisms such as PEAP etc. Otherwise has some good details, in additon to documentation that can also be found on Cisco website. Recommend not to buy until new edition comes out and it gets updated.

            Book Description

Insect biochemistry and molecular genetics have become enormously important sciences. Molecular genetics of drosophila has paced mammalian genetics and has facilitated many advances in mammalian genetics. Moreover, many life-threatening diseases for man are now carried chiefly by insects and our increasing knowledge of the basic science of insects may help to control these diseases.

There is no more important facet of insect science than insect hormones, the agents that allow for communication between cells and tissues. This volume updates important areas of this subject, namely: hormonal control of ecdysis; ecdysone receptors in agriculture and medicine; molecular structure of the receptor ligand binding site of ecdysone; a molecular genetic approach to the biosynthesis of the molting hormone; non-steroidal ecdysone agonists; molecular actions of juvenile hormone in drosophila, and insect neuropeptide receptors.

              Book Description

This volume is perhaps best characterised by its interdisciplinary nature and reliance on an eclectic range of approaches. One theme that naturally emerges from the collected essays is that of causation versus analogy. Phenomena defined at multiple levels can in principle be studied in two ways - vertically and horizontally. The vertical strategy directly specifies causal relations holding between levels, whereas the horizontal approach looks for parallels between levels, seeking to isolate shared causal properties. One of the essays here stands directly for the vertical strategy, while another warns explicitly against the perils of a loose selectionist analogy among levels. Other parallels between evolution and culture are probed, calling attention to the general limits of analogy, or carefully noting the respects in which the proposed analogy is expected to break down. The other themes of economics, optimisation, and stability, when not explicitly mentioned, lurk in the background of any treatment of culture and behaviour in relation to natural selection.

                      Book Description

The Institute for Mathematical Sciences at the National University of Singapore hosted a research program on "Representation Theory of Lie Groups" from July 2002 to January 2003. As part of the program, tutorials for graduate students and junior researchers were given by leading experts in the field.

This invaluable volume collects the expanded lecture notes of those tutorials. The topics covered include uncertainty principles for locally compact abelian groups, fundamentals of representations of p-adic groups, the Harish-Chandra-Howe local character expansion, classification of the square-integrable representations modulo cuspidal data, Dirac cohomology and Vogan's conjecture, multiplicity-free actions and Schur-Weyl-Howe duality.

The lecturers include Tomasz Przebinda from the University of Oklahoma, USA; Gordan Savin from the University of Utah, USA; Stephen DeBacker from Harvard University, USA; Marko Tadiæ from the University of Zagreb, Croatia; Jing-Song Huang from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong; Pavle Pandžiæ from the University of Zagreb, Croatia; Chal Benson and Gail Ratcliff from East Carolina University, USA; and Roe Goodman from Rutgers University, USA.

Overlook is proud to present four more antic selections from comic genius, P.G. Wodehouse. A Damsel in Distress is an early novel about the aristocratic Marshmoreton family-a precursor to the Blandings series. Leave It to Psmith is a comedy adventure involving crime and gunplay, and Mulliner Nights is a series of stories about the inimitable Mr. Mulliner. 4 out of 5 stars entertaining and fun.......2006-08-09

Read it for summer reading for the University of Texas and really enjoy it. Its easy to read and always entertaining. Wodehouse's stories are full of fun and silliness, not what I was expecting from a college world lit course. I would strongly recommend this book for anyone that enjoys frivolous British comedy.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Mulliner is delightfully silly.......2000-01-04

Mr. Mulliner drinks at a fishermans' bar, the Anglers Rest, where he tells stories about various and sundry relatives. No matter what the topic of discussion, Mr. Mulliner has a story on it and proceeds to enlighten his listeners. There's Buck-U-Uppo, a tonic recommended for elephant hunters but taken by a bishop and his pal. There's the man who sends for a course in farming by tape and mistakenly gets lessons in assertiveness. The plots all become terribly complicated in typical Wodehouse fashion. Since reading this, I have bought a collection of all P.G.Wodehouse's Mr. Mulliner stories. Next to Jeeves and Bertie, they are my favorites.

A thoughroughly enjoyable, mesmerizing, collection of a soldier's WWI remembrances. Somehow manages to be more than the sum of its plainly told, shy, politically incorrect, wars is hell but you get used to it parts. It ends up assembling and describing bit by bit the remarkable character of the author.

Also notable to me for how it reaches across 70 years to contrast how we've changed as a people. For example, I don't think this book would be published as written today. The editor would have probably added more polish, removed some of the namecalling and stereotyping and would have thus diminished the book.

Having read a lot of WWI books and books on sniping this one takes the cake. It's written in the autobiographical tradition of Teddy Roosevelt and will impress the old and young alike with its vivid imagery and colorful prose. Great read.

As a rifle shooter with a historical interest i bought this book. If your looking for an overly dramatic or gruesome account of life in the first world war trenches dont by this book. From what i can tell it is a written collection of memories by the author. These memories are written in a matter of fact, straight talking way which does not hide the authors zealous approach to his task of being a soldier.

Although at times slightly rambling i found this an interesting read and at times amuzing. A good reference if you are interested in rifle shooting or battle history.

                                        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2005-03-30

It might not be written in perfect English, and it's not always politically correct, but it's definitely always enjoyable.

You get the whole WWI experience from the author's point of view, including enough "war stories" to satisfy any reader.

McBride includes technical details, anecdotes, and just good old story telling, in this tale of a machine gunner / rifleman in the Great War.

I took a copy of this book and passed it out to the sharp shooters in my unit in desert storm. I know several USMC snipers that had read it. It is as valuable today as it was in WWI. A no holds barred book about killing.

                                            Book Description

This sweeping, vibrant narrative chronicles the history of the Mexican community in Los Angeles. Douglas Monroy unravels the dramatic, complex story of Mexican immigration to Los Angeles during the early decades of the twentieth century and shows how Mexican immigrants re-created their lives and their communities. Against the backdrop of this newly created cityscape, Rebirth explores pivotal aspects of Mexican Los Angeles during this time--its history, political economy, popular culture--and depicts the creation of a time and place unique in Californian and American history.
Mexican boxers, movie stars, politicians, workers, parents, and children, American popular culture and schools, and historical fervor on both sides of the border all come alive in this literary, jargon-free chronicle. In addition to the colorful unfolding of the social and cultural life of Mexican Los Angeles, Monroy tells a story of first-generation immigrants that provides important points of comparison for understanding other immigrant groups in the United States.
Monroy shows how the transmigration of space, culture, and reality from Mexico to Los Angeles became neither wholly American nor Mexican, but México de afuera, "Mexico outside," a place where new concerns and new lives emerged from what was both old and familiar. This extremely accessible work uncovers the human stories of a dynamic immigrant population and shows the emergence of a truly transnational history and culture. Rebirth provides an integral piece of Chicano history, as well as an important element of California urban history, with the rich, synthetic portrait it gives of Mexican Los Angeles.

What will the future be like? Throughout history, many have tried to answer the question, but few have had much success. Now, with journalistic clarity and wit, Jonathan Margolis in A Brief History of Tomorrow analyzes the few successes and numerous failures of past futurologists, then explores whether modern-day predictions about the future are any more likely to be correct.

The history of futurology is so littered with amusing misses that Noam Chomsky was led to remark: "Perhaps the most plausible prediction is that any prediction about serious matters is likely to be off the mark except by accident." Nevertheless, as Margolis explains, more than a few bright sparks in today's high-tech industries manage to earn a living--and a good one at that--keeping their bosses apprised of the possible courses of world history.

But are these modern-day seers likely to be any better at predicting the future than you, me, or Nostradamus? Can trends really be distinguished? In a hundred years' time, will we be laughing at the ridiculous fad that was the Internet as we tuck into our healthy breakfasts of fatty bacon and fried eggs (dietary fiber having been identified in 2020 as the major cause of bowel cancer)? Or will we, at last, be wearing those silver one-piece jump suits so beloved of 20th-century filmmakers, making our way to work in flying cars (how long have we been waiting for these?), and cryogenically preserving our heads in the hope that future surgeons will be able to reattach us to healthy bodies? No one knows, of course, but if you'd like to indulge in a bit of no-holds-barred speculation, A Brief History of Tomorrow is an undemanding and entertaining primer. --Chris Lavers, Amazon.co.uk

                                              Book Description

A fascinating look at the future, as you've never seen it.

Ten years from now, will we have a tiny personal computer surgically inserted in an earlobe, capable of connecting to phone lines and the internet? Fifty years from now, will atomic-sized robots replace surgeons? A hundred years from now, instead of taking the bus, will we simply teleport to work? It all may sound like impossible science fiction, but fifty years ago, so did walking on the moon. Journalist Jonathan Margolis interviews leading thinkers in such fields as genetics, medicine, neurobiology, quantum physics, robotics, computer science, and space travel to explore where we're going, and what it will look like when-and if-we get there.

Beginning with famously flawed past visions of the future-among them H.G. Wells, George Orwell, Arthur C. Clarke, Stephen Hawking, and Bill Gates-Margolis examines many of the strange and tempting futures that may lie in store for us. Politics, society, religion, and work are all destined for great changes. What might they be? How will they come about? Thought-provoking, amusing, and absolutely original, A Brief History of Tomorrow is a deliciously compelling look at something we all spend a lot of time contemplating: the future.

That is the question of much of mankind. Jonathan Margolis starts out by finding out what past people thought the future would be like, if they got it right or wrong and WHY they got it right or wrong. After looking at the works of authors, such as H.G. Wells, Arthur C. Clarke, Jules Verne and Edward Bellamy, plus scientists, professors and specialists he dives into what people believe now. Chapter after chapter deals with global warming, ice ages, pollution, advanced medicine, genetic engineering, the internet, robots, e-commerce, smart kitchens, cloning, politics, space travel, flying cars, airships, teleportation, time travel AND aliens.
Then he lists his own ideas about future trends, some of which seem bland, others seem to be very reasonable, and some seem weird. For example, he suggests global warming might just fade away (which it might), 'Real' or 'Natural' will always be valued over 'virtual' (and I'm sure it will cost more), that aircars would be dangerous within the city streetscape(true), and that we don't have to worry about things like asteroid impacts (just because he figures it will happen to a part of the Earth that nobody cares about).
But the whole book is about the fact that futurology can be bland, reasonable and weird all at the same time. Don't take him seriously, but enjoy the book. Great for science fiction fans or want-to-be authors of science fiction!

4 out of 5 stars A stab in the dark at predicting the future.......2002-06-29

Beginning with a history of the last few hundred years attempts at predicting the future, the successes and failures. The failure to predict feminism, inroads against racism and homophobia. The predictions of moon/Mars colonisation and flying cars among others. Then an overview of recent and current predictions for the future, how accurate they are likely to be in light of the history of futurism.

There are chapters on 'the way we weren't', 'is futurology bunk?', 'environment', 'human body', 'mind', 'home and work', 'leisure', 'travel' and a conclusion. This covers the key areas for futurism. The author makes the point that predicting the future is always fraught with peril because so many movements, ideas and inventions have come out of nowhere eg. electricity, feminism, theory of relativity, quantum theory, the internet etc.

It is generally an optimistic book despite the facts mentioned that the gap between the rich and poor is increasing and the large amount of people living close to starvation, he assumes that technological fixes will reduce hunger. There isn't much faith in the majority consensus of climate scientists that global warming is a serious problem, I assume he hasn't read enough of the relevant information. The author comes close to endorsing the views of Fukuyama that capitalism is the complete social system that the human race has been heading towards, but he is too realistic to totally endorse these views. There is a lot of interest, but for sheer futuristic leaps of imagination it doesn't quite match ' Great Mambo Chicken And The Transhuman Condition' by Ed Regis. However there are some important points made, the entertainment is kept at a premium and there is plenty of food for thought.

Margolis' wit, insight and opinion may present a challenge to more than a few readers but, for my money, this book is an entertaining and thought-provoking journey from statistics and observation to logical and wise speculation. Buy it!

This is a real dark horse of a book. It seemed kind of slim and I wasn't expecting much, but, wow! Not only is it extremely well-researched, but it's beautifully written, and has real wisdom. I can't agree with the reviewer who criticized it as rambling. On the contrary, it's taut and focused, quite brilliant at times, especially (and I also disagree with the previous critic here) when Margolis deals with environmental matters. I work in this field, and I think Margolis's is one of the fairest, most balanced and wisest assessments I've come across. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a serious book about the future that's not a geeky bore.

I was hopeful picking up this book. I was hoping for a book that took a cold eye on past speculations of futurology, and dissects them. It'd be interesting to see how Alvin Toffler stands up with time, or some debunking of predictions of business trends. Instead, we get a series of rambling essays taking a few factoids and random observations, on which Margolis drones on for pages and pages. He fails to coherently state his point or argue for it, instead going off on unrelated tangents. This book really needed serious editing. The section on the environment was just woeful. I'm not sure whether Margolis has a scientific or technical education. He totally fails to even address the science behind environmental concerns. He instead indulges in what can only be called arm-waving dismissals of "catastrophism". Unfortunately, there is such a thing as environmental science, and it is insufficient to dismiss the concerns raised by it based on political ideology, as Margolis does. There will one day be a good book written on futurology and trend prediction, hopefully taking a good laugh at the bad predictions, analyzing those that were correct. It would also explore the psychological dimensions of futurology - is it just projecting of dreams and fears onto the future, the same as we slant our view of the past? Based on this analysis, we could make and judge predictions better. Unfortunately, this book isn't that book.
