Keynes's formal statement of Say's Law in GT is mpc+mpi=1.......2005-06-10

Kates has written a book that makes four basic claims,none of which he comes close to supporting effectively.Kates first claim is that no one really knows what it was that Keynes did in the General Theory(GT;1936).Second,Kates claims that classical and neoclassical economists had a theory of recession and involuntary unemployment prior to the publication of the GT.Third,Kates claims that the literary definition of Say's Law given in chapter 3 of the GT,that"Supply creates its own Demand",is incorrect and that by Say's Law Classical and Neoclassical economists meant that it was mathematically impossible for demand deficiency to ever occur in a free market economy.The idea of demand deficiency is thus a logical fallacy as well as being mathematically impossible.Finally,Kates argues that Say's Law needs to be reincorporated in current,modern,macroeconomic theory since increased spending to fight the nonexistent problem of demand deficiency merely leads to the creation of inflation.Kates bases his argument on a compilation of a huge number of literary quotations taken from the works and textbooks of 19th and early 20th century economists,such as Mill,Clay,Ely,Thomas,McCulloch,Southworth,etc.Unfortunately,all of the vast number of quotations assembled by Kates are mere assertions.There is not a single piece of formal and/or technical analysis in any of the quotations presented.The lack of any formal mathematical and/or logical analysis of either Keynes's arguments or the literary arguments of the classical and neoclassical opponents of Keynes points to the conclusion that Kates is mathematically illiterate,inept,and inumerant.This conclusion is supported and borne out by the factthat Kates completely overlooks the fact that Keynes presented a technical analysis of Say's Law in chapters 19-21 of the GT.Kates relies on an introductory chapter of the GT,chapter 3,which contains an informal guide to Keynes's full scale argument in chapters 19-21.There is no formal or mathematical analysis contained in chapter 3 at all.On pp.261-263 of the GT,Keynes presents his major TECHNICAL conclusion-If,and only if,the marginal propensity to spend is equal to 1 will Say's Law hold and no involuntary unemployment will be present in the economy.Keynes then derives the following optimality condition in both of chapters 20 and 21:w/p=mpl/(mpc+mpi),where mpc is the marginal propensity to spend on consumer goods,mpi is the marginal propensity to spend on investment goods,and mpl is the aggregate marginal product of labor derived from a neoclassical aggregate production function.The marginal propensity to spend is equal to the sum of mpc+mpi in a purely competitive private economy with a private commercial banking system and no government sector or foreign trade.If mpc+mpi=mpc+mps=1,then,and only then,will Say's Law hold.Kates has completely overlooked Keynes's discussions of the competing classical and neoclassical business cycle theory contained in chapters 18 and 22 of the GT.Such a theory has two points-(1)The average or mean position of the economy is one of full employment on the boundaries of the static and dynamic production possibilities frontier and(2)Minor and mild inventory recessions will occur as business men will make minor forecast errors concerning the composition of the full employment level of output over time.Such miscalculations about the particular mix of consumption and investment goods to provide a full employment economy will periodically lead to necessary adjustments in employment as the particular product mix is adjusted over time.During this inventory adjustment period there will be an increase in unemployment.A minor and mild recession will occur that is selfcorrecting and selfadjusting as the inventory errors are automatically corrected.Keynes covers this type of outcome on page332 of the GT at the end of chapter 22.This has absolutely nothing to do with the business cycle problem analyzed by Keynes in the GT,which dealt with the effect of uncertainty(Ellsberg's ambiguity)in leading to severe shortfalls in spending on fixed capital goods .The result is a severe recession or depression .Such results are mathematical and statistical impossibilities in the classical and neoclassical theories which assume only risk and no uncertainty(ambiguity).Keynes's theory is that the average operating position of the economy is inside the boundary of both the static and dynamic ppf's, due to the impact on the economy of business decision making under conditions of uncertainty(ambiguity),combined with pessimism about future expected yields from the existing stock of capital goods.I recommend that the reader of this review consider purchasing the General Theory.He will learn a lot more about Say's Law than by reading Kates.

Roy Burns' drum set method is the ultimate for starter set players. It builds from some of the easiest coordination exercises to a wide range of styles including various Latin patterns and gospel. Also includes a large number of dance styles for use in Big Band settings. This method is a wonderful place to start when beginning your drum set journey.

Don't buy.......2002-10-09

The author of this book has taken a few facts in Jeremy Brett's life, and has let his imagination soar -- not good to do when writing a biograghy. Manner's depiction of Brett is inaccurate, misleading, and insulting. Not for someone who wants the real story behind the Holmesian actor. I recommend "Bending the Willow" by David Stuart Davies as a truer telling of Brett's story.

Wonderfully Introspective.......2002-06-04

You get an insight into Jeremy's character and exactly why his Sherlock Holmes is brilliant. I have often wondered why he wasn't as big a star as his English counterparts, certainly the talent was there. This book is heart-warming and gut-wretching.
It will keep you captivated. A good read.

If only I could rate this book less than one star ... very disappointing to anyone who is interested in learning more about Jeremy Brett. I put this book down before I half finished it, and feel he has been dishonored.

Jeremy Brett was a brilliant actor and the best Sherlock Holmes ever, in my opinion. Knowing little of Mr. Brett other than his Holmes role and some films like "My Fair Lady", in which he played Freddy, there was much of interest here, from his childhood and youth, life as a young actor and with his wife and son, and his lifelong struggle with manic-depression and his own bisexuality. About half the book deals with his Holmes-era life and his love/hate relationship with the role that made him most famous. Well recommended for fans of Mr. Brett and Holmes afficionados.

Excellent Review of Tactical Shotgun Techniques.......2007-04-29

Gabe Suarez covers a wide range of topics: Shotgun Types, Ammunition, Accessories, Loading, Shooting Positions, Malfunctions, Close Quarters Defense, etc... It's an excellent overview of tactical shotgun shooting for those just beginning to learn and a great review for those with more advanced skills.

There are numerous illustrations, a list of resources and suggestions for further reading.

Overall a well written book that covers a lot of ground.

What your shotgun training should include.......2007-03-27

The Bounty Hunter breakin here in Phoenix in '97 prompted me to take up the defensive shotgun. I found a local school and began the thrilling task of learning how to operate the 12 gauge pump not only as a formidable tool for things that go bump in the night, but to learn its capabilities and shortcomings (hostage rescue). Suarez' TSG addresses all the best techniques and provides much supplemental material for applying these techniques using different operating systems (Rem/Mossberg slide/pump, semi-autos).

It's all here: patterning with buckshot/shot, one/two-hand operations, slings and modes of carry, tactical and emergency reloads, indexing, loading a slug on demand, position shooting, and transitioning to sidearm/secondary weapon. The book is filled with excellent photographs which document the above techniques. Suarez' skill as a trainer clearly shows in the effectiveness of presentation.

Although I'd recommend studying the defensive shotgun in a practical setting, this book is a great way to see what should be covered in such a course. If you don't have social shotgun skills, there's no time like the present. Social unrest, home invasion, nuisance animals--do it now.

This is the most readable scientific book I have read in many years.
And what a subject:Taking on the history of life and making it a page turner! Truly a work of great intellect, art and love. Would that more scientists had the ability to communicate as Carl Sagan and Ann Druyen do in this amazing book.

Although a Carl Sagan fan since I was a student, I never heard of this book. I learned about it by hearing it mentioned on a radio show on NPR. I am now about halfway through it, and I can't believe that I never read this book before. A required read for anyone interested in science, and more specifically, our place as humans in terms of the larger cosmos. Well-written, insightful, and containing page after page of beautiful connections and observations.

Replication Bomb.......2006-12-21

"Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors" takes as its subject nothing less than the origin of life on Earth. The book is epic in scope, ranging from the gravitational collapse of interstellar clouds and the evolution of solar systems to the first appearance of self-replicating molecules on Earth. Probably starting between 4 and 3.5 billion years ago, the initial self-replicating molecules - having arisen by a chain of random processes - initiated the essentially non-random processes of natural selection and the story goes on from there.

The story that Sagan and Druyan are telling is about us, the human animal: where we come from and what ancestral `shadows' follow us and as a result of these considerations, where we are headed. Instead of portraying a nature `red in tooth and claw', Sagan and Druyan show how cooperation is a key feature of life, beginning with the earliest stromatolite colonies. This theme is carried forward and explored in later chapters which examine the bases of ethics, altruism, compassion and caring in our primate relatives. The book also examines the roots of aggression, xenophobia, and dominance hierarchies and the prevalence of these phenomena in the primate world especially.

This is an engaging and educational read, well worth the reader's effort. However, there are also several drawbacks that deserve to be mentioned. Sagan and Druyan go to considerable lengths to convince the reader of the similarities between humans and the other primate species. They especially stress the close genetic relationship between humans and chimpanzees and point out that while humans have consistently tried to erect barriers between themselves and the nonhuman animals, these barriers are illusory. For example, language is often mentioned as the sole preserve of Homo sapiens. And yet, studies with vervet monkeys and experiments with chimpanzees and bonobos have demonstrated that a rudimentary capacity for language (including the ability to perform abstractions) exist in species besides humans. The point that Sagan and Druyan are trying to make is that we humans vary from the other animals not so much in kind (quality), but rather in degree (quantity). This point is well taken but in emphasizing the similarities between humans and other animals (including our close primate relatives) we should not be overly zealous in the other direction. There are many similarities between humans and chimpanzees, sure, but there are also obvious, non-trivial differences that likewise deserve to be mentioned. After all, unlike the chimpanzees, who to present day inhabit the same environments that their million-year old ancestors have inhabited, humans have spread to just about every part of the globe and are actively exploring the near reaches of the universe. The tendency to emphasize the close genetic relationship between humans and chimpanzees while glossing over the differences is rampant in popular books about human evolution (for example, Jared Diamond's "The Third Chimpanzee").

"Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors" is subtitled as a `Search for Who We Are', aiming to give an account of the `orphan's file' (the orphan being the human race). However, the book is primarily devoted to the discussion of nonhuman animals, with no mention of important human landmarks such as the discovery of agriculture, for example, and the rise of civilizations and states. To be fair, the authors acknowledge this in the book's epilogue, with the promise that the story remains to be continued. Another drawback is that the book's first few chapters, which give an account of the birth of our sun and the emergence of our planet, are not quite convincing - emphasizing poetic eloquence perhaps somewhat to the detriment of giving a clear account.

Despite the drawbacks this is recommended reading, along with Sagan's "The Dragons of Eden: Speculations on the Evolution of Human Intelligence." Sagan may have his share of detractors but his ability in making science accessible was commendable.

I devoured this book and I want to pass my copy onto everyone that I think can benefit from reading it, which is everyone. Taking a quote from Fight Club, "we are not special," sure that's not completey true, we are a little special but we are also MORE just like every other animal.

If you're interested in evolution, anthropology, archaeology, and/or any other related field, check this book out. Or even better yet challenge a fundy to read it.

Important book..........2006-01-02

I think this is a very important book. Honest and direct to the point. After reading this book with an open mind you'll have to ponder and evaluate all the things that you believe in out of fear or faith.
Yes, your existence is an accident. Maybe the whole human race was an accident. Nature doesn't care about justice and life just move ahead without a plan and sometimes this process of selection or of survival of the fittest brings out "good" results but we also see the bad ones....So ...use your days, enjoy the life you have and respect your fellow travelers in this tiny planet...and be certain that when you die you will go back to where you were before you were born.... into nothingness..
Your genes will live in your children and that is all there is to it...
