Book Description

If It’s on the LSAT, It’s in This Book

The Princeton Review realizes that acing the LSAT is very different from getting straight A’s in school. We don’t try to teach you everything there is to know about reading comprehension or analytic thinking–only the techniques you’ll need to score higher on the exam. There’s a big difference. In Cracking the LSAT, we’ll teach you how to think like the test writers and

-Eliminate answer choices that look right but are planted to fool you
-Master the 7 principles of LSAT test taking that you can’t do without
-Nail even the toughest question types across Arguments, Reading Comprehension, and Games
-Practice online with full-length LSAT exams and instant scoring analysis

This book and CD-ROM package includes 6 full-length practice LSAT exams: 2 in the book and 4 on CD-ROM. All of our practice test questions are like the ones you’ll see on the actual LSAT, and we fully explain every solution.

1 out of 5 stars By no means should you buy this book.......2005-10-03

I wasted one whole week on this book (and that was four weeks before the LSAT) before I realized it was doing nothing for me. The chapters on the arguments section are worthless--the simulated LSAT questions in this book are much more difficult than the real ones, which serves only to confuse and discourage you. The chapter on the games section will help you with the most simple games, which account for one or two out of four games on the real test. Don't make the same mistake I did (I wish I had read some reader reviews before buying the book). In my opinon, the only LSAT prep books worth buying are the two PowerScore bibles. Plus, of course all the real LSATs you have time for. After working through the Princeton book, I was scoring 10 of 24 on the games. After practicing hard with the PowerScore Games Bible, I scored 22/24.

1 out of 5 stars Too haphazard.......2005-08-08

This book is like driving on a West Virginia highway. You're going along fine and WHAM-THUDDA-THUDDA... pothole city. The book has a unified tone and style, but sections, and even analysis of question types goes from good and detailed to hurried and worthless. Have just about thrown this book out the window a couple of times in frustration at the breezy and conversational, yet empty and repetitive text that fills pages but gives absolutely no insight into the test.

3 out of 5 stars A Mixed Bag.......2005-05-23

This prep book is a mixed bag. It's strongest on the Arguments and Games sections, weakest on Reading Comprehension. PR's method of diagramming Games is better than the methods found in other prep books: it's clear, intuitive, and easily and quickly grasped; helps avoid confusion during the panic of a real live test. PR's strategy for tackling the Arguments section is also very effective. But PR is WAY OFF in its advice for attacking the Reading Comprehension section. Do NOT follow PR's advice about reading the questions before reading the passage during the test. This stupid strategy wastes precious time and you probably won't be able to keep the six or seven questions in mind as you read the passage. Instead, in the four or five weeks before you take the test, familiarize yourself with the half-dozen TYPES of questions asked in the RC section of the LSAT (Main Idea, Description, Extension, Application, Structure, and Tone). Once you have internalized them, you will automatically mark the passage as you read it (by circling the Pivotal Words and annotating briefly in the margins), so that you can quickly refer to it as you answer the actual questions during the test.

Do not waste your time with the silly CD-ROM: the LSAT is a paper-and-pencil test, so get used to working in that medium. (Besides, PR's CD-ROM is full of bugs.) Get a whole bunch of Actual, Official LSATs, xerox them, and practice, practice, practice.

So, to recap: PR is good for diagramming Games, good for Arguments, and lousy for Reading Comp.

If you have to choose only one prep book, I'd recommend Jeff Kolby's "Master the LSAT". I also like PowerScore's "Logic Games Bible": its classification scheme is a little complicated at first, but if you learn it well, it will pay off handsomely come test time. Using these three prep books, plus Kaplan's "LSAT 180", and studying hard every day for two months, I was able to score a 174 on the last LSAT.

2 out of 5 stars Pass this one by!!!.......2005-05-13

This LSAT Prep book is boring!!! If you want a general overview of the LSAT and a brief overview of some techniques, then maybe this would help you a little bit. The strategies they recommend are too time-consuming for me. Beware, this book didn't help me that much, if any, and the strategies are a little weird. I'd recommend buying PrepTests from LSAC and practicing with real tests rather than the ones provided here. There are plenty of better prep books than this one.

    Book Description

The first monograph on this topic since 1961, this book provides an innovative interpretation of the Friendly Societies in Britain from the perspectives on social, gender and political history. It establishes the central role of the Friendly Societies in the political activism of British workers, changing understandings of masculinity and femininity, the ritualized expression of social tensions and the origins of the welfare state.

      Book Description

Written by a former restaurateur, this book presents the practice of restaurant cost control over its theory within real-world perspective that every experienced restaurant operator can recognize. Bringing together the authors' experience and knowledge as a corporate restaurant administrator, and an independent restaurant owner-operator, the book provides practical and realistic examples on controlling costs for culinarians as well as restaurant managers. An essential resource for any restaurant owner or manager.

5 out of 5 stars Second Edition Review.......2004-11-09

The reviews from 1999 are for the first edition. The second edition has been significantly revised. It is written for culinary professionals, culinary students and independent restaurant owners and managers. If the text is adopted, it comes with extensive teaching and learning materials on CD.

      4 out of 5 stars Too expensive.......1999-06-03

While I think this bood definitely has merit and is a very good guide for someone starting up in the restaurant business, I think it is overpriced. After all, it is still a paperback and I would have expected to spend that amount of money on a hardbound book.

5 out of 5 stars An easy read, but too wordy........1999-02-14

Overpriced, redundant work. You can skip chapter 2, chapter 3 is the same and more. Not many people write on this topic, so this work is a useful tool.

If you've ever wondered where many of our popular everyday expressions come from, you will find the answers in Captain Bucko's Nauti-Words Handbook. There are hundreds of nautical terms and everyday expressions described by the author, Roger Huff, in a fascinating and humorous style. And the author is no landlubber just doing research at a library; he has credentials as a seaman and a professional oceanographer. I recommend this book as an excellent reference source for all who are interested in the origins of nautical terms.

5 out of 5 stars Great Western Swing History.......2002-08-02

Great reading for the newcomer as well as the old seasoned lover of this Texas born music. Cary Ginell & Roy Lee Brown did a super job on this book! History told is in great detail. As my old friend Frank Reneau, who was a Crystal Spring Rambler & Light Crust Doughboy as well said, "It took me back 65 years!"
      Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Country Western Heritage.......2001-04-21

Cary Ginell has captured a part of our country western music history that has gone essentially unpublished; giving way to the likes of Bob Wills, Hank Thompson and others. A part of our heritage moving off the horizon has been captured in part by the research of Mr. Ginell and help document the beginnings of western swing. As one of the contributors to his research, I enjoyed reading his perspective of the evolution of this part of our culture. Although I disagree with some of the conclusions reached between the relationship between Milton Brown and my father and grandfather, I find his work to include a balanced blend of stories and recollections from people who were a part of the evolution. Crystal Springs, "Papa Sam" and "Baby Henry" Cunningham were central to the creation and spread of this music phenomenon. From Papa Sam's early efforts to uplift spirits through a musical forum to Baby Henry's "ear" and search for a particular sound; this music was born at Crystal Springs in Fort Worth, Texas. Papa Sam and the Babe moved this music throughout Texas and the neighboring states through radio, recordings, and personal appearances. Mr. Ginell slightly missed the mark giving weight to there not being a formal business arrangement between Milton Brown and Papa Sam. In those days your word was your bond and a handshake was more binding than anything we have today. Milton Brown and Bob Wills were both indebted to the efforts and support given them by my father and grandfather; and vice versa. Their relationships were binding and lasting beyond the superficial disagreements fueled by the price of fame gained. After approaching their peaks (Milton and Bob), they would still call on the Babe when they were hurting. Most people didn't see the stars when they were a little tarnished and needed some polishing before being put back in their places for all to see. Most of their problems extending beyond family to outside relationships (personal and professional), financial support and alcohol were attended to in a very discreet and sometimes forcefull manner by the two people they knew had the ability and heart to come alongside. Good job, Cary, maybe we'll see more on Crystal Springs, Papa Sam and the Babe before all those from that era pass.

The calender for the HBO series Deadwood comes from stills of the second season. Gorgeous images framed in wood edged gold showcase. However, they only have three of Ian McShane. ARGH!! Al would not be happy about that and would have some choice words! 12 month calender.

Frankly, with Deadwood cancelled, as of this writing, these are a good investment. Sure to be a high priced collectors items before you can say Al Swearengen.

          Edited 11/22/02.

I bought this over a year ago and was not impressed, initially. However, I am re-reading it in light of new responsibilities, and I'm changing my opinion, slightly.

First of all, if you are a serious system administrator, you should own, read, and work to the principles outlined in this book.

With that said, there were two items that I felt detracted from the presentation.

First was, there was much text devoted to particular operating systems (both *nix and Windows). Whether you're dealing with Linux, Unix, or BeOS, it's the principles that matter, not the implementation.

The second was that cfEngine, a systems configuration engine, was used to demonstrate the principles. This works on Unix - and again, detracted from the overall presentation of the "Principles" in the title I bought it for.

So, bottom line, the book is worth a read. Spend some time working to understand and apply the principles in your environment. If you can implement some of the specifics of the author's techniques, that's all the better.

11/10/02 update: "The Practice of System and Network Administration" is in. Short verdict, it's worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars A pretty good work on the non-technical side of sysadmining.......2001-10-03

This work is a good one on the non-technical side of system adminsitration. It does not deal with stuff like HOW to install a system, but the WHYs, such as WHY you want to properly document your installations.

This sort of work has been needed for a long time, since "The Keys to Successful Unix System Management" went out of print. However, this work may be a bit too academic for many admins. They might find the recent "Practice of System and Network Administration" to be a bit better. If you can afford both, do so.

1 out of 5 stars This guy is a complete ningkumpoop!.......2001-09-04

This book is completely filled with nonsense. Did this guy ever take any classes or instruction on what is he writing about? What qualifications does he have? Spend you money on a real networking book from a qualified author.

4 out of 5 stars Peter Salus, Login - June 2000.......2000-11-29

Peter Salus, Login - June 2000 Another winner! I keep Nemeth et al. and AEleen Frisch at hand for referencing the systems admin tasks we all need to do. Burgess' fine book is something ``completely different.'' It is a well-articulated introduction to a corpus of guiding principles for systems administrators. And as we live in a world of heterogeneity, Burgess ``covers'' Unix, Unix-like, DOS, Windows, Mac, Amiga, and NT systems.

Burgess says that he wants to express a sound and logical way to approach networked systems. While I can find nits (that's a reviewers job, isn't it?), I consider this an important book. More and more talk of certification can only lead to a body of knowledge and a set of tenets that are 'required.'

I think that Burgess will become part of the required reading for future (and current) systems administrators.

          Book Description

This first volume details all aspects of the Hitler's fanatical "boy soldiers" division's history with a balanced mix of both tactical and strategic accounts, including the creation and training of these teenage warriors and their baptism of fire in the Normandy campaign in World War II. Written by the division's former chief of staff.

          4 out of 5 stars 12th SS Vol I & II.......2007-01-31

This is an excellent historical reference book. It provides another viewpoint to the Allied histories of the war. There seems to be an obvious bias which is also present in many if not most of the Allied histories. Viewed in the context of contrary histories of the same battles, many points can be clarified.
The 12th SS was a fabulous division of fighting men. I see many training and doctrinal attributes that were used in the Marine Corps when I joined. When viewed in a strictly historical perspective of fighting quality and ability there are few formations that can compare with with the 12th SS. I highly recommend these volumes to historians as well as gamers modeling the battles this division was engaged in.

4 out of 5 stars Hitlers child soldiers.......2005-10-14

Having completed a PHD on the Waffen-SS and their atrocities I found that this item lacked some details in that regard. As a pure military history it is execellent. However I would have liked more detail of the political and ideological background to the unit. A good read.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but flawed.......2005-07-25

Good description of battle but goes into details in a somewhat disjointed manner. Hard to tell at times whether point of view of battle is from the German or Allied side. Worth the price and the read if a student of Western Front of European war,

            Book Description

"The urgency to act now isn't apocalyptic. Calls for the earth's demise have come and gone throughout history, especially in recent decades.... and we're still here. It is entirely possible, of course, that this decade will be our last, but I'm betting that it won't be, that we and the earth will still be here in a hundred years and in a thousand. In consequence, the stewardship and vision that we show today will help determine the type of world that our descendants inherit. This book isn't about the end of the world, it's about the middle of it, the mundane middle of our daily lives and the choices that we consciously and unconsciously make."

            —Rob Jackson

Writing especially for people who've tuned out the environmental debate, Rob Jackson persuasively argues that we're at a crucial turning point in environmental history, where choices we make now will determine the quality of life into the unforeseeable future. Laying out the scientific facts in plain language and with flashes of humor, he shows how the escalation of population growth and resource consumption in the twentieth century caused problems from ozone depletion to global warming, habitat destruction, and biodiversity loss. At the same time, however, he highlights ongoing solutions to these problems and ways in which we can create a sustainable future for subsequent generations and all life on earth. His urgent message is not that we've already failed, but that we can succeed.

5 out of 5 stars earth at risk.......2005-09-29

This wonderful book makes a compelling and thoughtful case for environmental care, but is never strident and is totally free of hyperbole. In addition, it is charming, interesting, informative - just a delightful read, one to be shared with friends who are concerned about our world and friends who should be.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensible reading .......2005-08-21

Relevant, important information about the interconnection of everything that exists on our living planet, earth. Elegant in its presentation, enlightening with its content, non-partisan about why we should be concerned, inspiring in its simplicity. Informed and educated; I learned things I never would have even thought to ask about. Not to be ignored or overlooked. Everyone should have to read this book!
