This is a wonderful book. It is full of tons of information. There are so many pictures (could use more!) and charts. It provides a basic background of the specific nation and the book also gives information on the government, tourism, economy and more! Perfect for any person interested in the world. This book is at times a hoot! A little confusing to begin with as I thought it was strictly a gardening book, however, anyone with a sense of humor (the darker the better) will get a kick out of the author's fictitious persona and hopefully, fictitious gardening columns. There are actually some pretty good horticultural gems, as well.

Radically Funny.......2006-02-15

Life at Miltonhurst is organized around two things--gardening and the Q & A column of one Miss Mertensia Corydalis. As for the rest--not so organized. She comes from a long line of expert gardeners--it is in her blood, but please, please, don't ask her about lawn care. This makes her blood boil.

Mertensia's operation is small, organic and old world. Her publication is rival to the ever expanding landscaping empire of Norton Doyle. Norton, who is decidedly non-organic in his approach, happens to be her ex husband. Her brother Artur, and assistants Tran and Miss Vong, add to the chaos in a book that reads like an unintentional diary. You are eager to find out what else slips into her column besides sound advice. However, it can get personal.

Miss Mertensia seems prudish and formal on the surface--but not so. She is never crude but always full of double entendre. It is the reader who has the dirty mind. Never the less, Abbott's star character is highly literate. Her lush descriptions and it must be said, rapier wit make this the intelligent reader's humor title of the year.

Beyond their antics, you can truly learn a thing or two about the real world of horticulture. Abbott is the gourment of the garden. Included is a recipe for candied violets from the backyard. Yum. Please buy this book--you will laugh and learn simultaneously.

Magnificent..........2007-04-27

Miguel has given Modelers with taste for the extreme weathering not just A guide book but THE guide book for mastering these popular techniques and effects... This isn't a book to be read, it's a book to be absorbed and studied... I can't imagine the amount of work that must have went into it to produce the step by step pictures that are crystal clear and are the real treasure of the book... I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone interested in the art of model painting... WELL WORTH THE PRICE!!!

A MUST HAVE REFERENCE.......2007-04-18

For someone who is trying model building for the first or for the seasoned professional model builder, this book is a must have.
Easy to follow photographic references and step-by-step instructions on everything from model construction, painting, detailing and diorama building.
A bit pricey, but well worh the investment. I have been a fan of Mig Jimenez' work for some time now, and I know after reading this book Mig will have many more fans.
Just a side note, this book is a translated text, and thus some of the wording is a bit awkward, but still very easy to follow.

It's very good, but not perfect.......2007-01-15

This is a very good book and worth the money. However, there were some choices made in the writing that were, in my opinion, the wrong ones. The problem is this; a picture is worth a thousand words but words are valuable to. Mr Jimenez is an outstanding modeler and has pioneered a lot of the hyper-realistic techniques of filters and washes spreading throughout the hobby. However, many of the subtleties of his technique really need some explanation and guidance. This book doesn't do a great job with this. Written descriptions are short and sparse with a focus on step by step photos. The problem is, many of the techniques are very dificult to follow without captions. Had the photos had captions with them, this book would probably be the best armor book out there today, finally providing a complete successor to Shep Paine's and Verlinden's classics. Without them, the book is full of inpiration but also a fair amount of frustration in adding these tools to one's own toolbox.

Not just for armor modelers: railroad modelers find much to use!.......2006-11-30

I am a former armor and military aircraft modeler and so I know to go to forums and resources that most railroad modelers don't begin to think of exploring.

I found MIG's book a treasure trove of techniques for my railroad modeling. Granted, I will have to use his technique descriptions as inspiration rather than recipes. Most freight cars in the era I model were an oxide red and most steam locomotives were black, so the use of base olive drab and panzer gray...and the colors used to filter, fade, rust and enhance them would be different too.

But I have never seen a railroad modeling magazine article or how-to book describe filters or mapping. And yet the possibilities for these techniques in railroad model weathering are huge.

This book may get me back into armor modeling too, but for now, it is a treasured resource for my railroad modeling!

Pure modeling eye candy.......2006-08-15

Sure it's spendy, but you will spend countless hours drooling over this book by one of the premier modellers in the world right now. As mentioned, every facet of AFV modeling is covered in this publication. From equipment to the process of painting the entire vehicle, groundwork, accessories, etc.

Do not expect a lot of text to be included with this books. The techniques are covered with high quality color shots. Did I mention all the pictures in this book are color?

Just don't forget to add a bib to your order when you get this.

After decades of hand-wringing and well-intentioned efforts to improve inner cities, ghettos remain places of degrading poverty with few jobs, much crime, failing schools, and dilapidated housing. Stepping around fruitless arguments over whether or not ghettos are dysfunctional communities that exacerbate poverty, and beyond modest proposals to ameliorate their problems, one of America's leading experts on civil rights gives us a stunning but commonsensical solution: give residents the means to leave.

Inner cities, writes Owen Fiss, are structures of subordination. The only way to end the poverty they transmit across generations is to help people move out of them--and into neighborhoods with higher employment rates and decent schools. Based on programs tried successfully in Chicago and elsewhere, Fiss's proposal is for a provocative national policy initiative that would give inner-city residents rent vouchers so they can move to better neighborhoods. This would end at last the informal segregation, by race and income, of our metropolitan regions. Given the government's role in creating and maintaining segregation, Fiss argues, justice demands no less than such sweeping federal action.

To sample the heated controversy that Fiss's ideas will ignite, the book includes ten responses from scholars, journalists, and practicing lawyers. Some endorse Fiss's proposal in general terms but take issue with particulars. Others concur with his diagnosis of the problem but argue that his policy response is wrongheaded. Still others accuse Fiss of underestimating the internal strength of inner-city communities as well as the hostility of white suburbs.

This is a fairly good book........2001-02-07

This book is about the changes in Jewish sociaty in Germany mainly between 1770 and 1840. Though the author claims to be equally analysing all of Western European Jewry, in fact he only focuses on German Jewry. The reason for this may be that he wasn't so happy with the outcome in Ausria and Hungary. Most of what happened after 1840 is mostly in the political realm, i.e. when exactly Jews had legal rights to serve in Parliment and not have swear the standard Anglican oath etc. The main problem the book has is the author is one-sided in that he favors the Jewish reformers to the extent of not even mentioning Rabbi S.R. Hirsh. Rabbi Hirsh was able to construct a system that showed that there is no contridiction between the Jewish religion and the Modern era. A side effect of the problem is that the author gives very little statistical records to back up his ideas. If one wants to try and figure out what the total picture of German Jewry was in this period, one will be either misled or just confused. However all in all the book is clearly written and carefully footnoted.

Breaking Out of the Pink-Collar Ghetto.......2004-09-01

This book is statistical analysis only and does not provide any insight as to how women can break out of the pink-collar ghetto. After reading a Chicago Tribune article which highly recommended this book, I was under the impression that this book would offer solutions. It does not and unless you are a stastician, you won't make it through the first chapter. Very disappointing.
