Book Description
Politics, Subsidies and Competition focuses on the interplay of political, economic and institutional-legal factors in the formation of European competition policy, with particular emphasis on European Union control of national subsidies. This book demonstrates the increasing significance of the EU in the management of European economies. It argues that state subsidization is the only remaining effective form of state intervention because, in the integrated European market, state aid - ranging from investment and export aid to special tax concessions - has become the only instrument that can be used to favor and protect national industries. This makes the control of state subsidization more important than ever, and the European Community's attempts to increase this control since the mid-1970s tell an intriguing story of fierce intergovernmental bargaining, business lobbying and increasingly assertive EC/EU institutions. The argument is supported by evidence of the evolution of European policy and by case studies of sectoral aid regimes and their transformation in interaction with EU policy. This book will be of use to students and scholars of the economics and politics of Western Europe and regional and public policy.

Book Description
In most country communities the local pub is the real social center. Brian Martin has tracked down some great characters who here recall their days propping up the bar. From Britain's oldest landlay--a lifetime teetotaler who served drinks till she was niney-nine--to the farmer who blew a hole in his friend's hat when he filled an ashtray with gunpower; here is an illustrated record of rural richness as experienced by some of our most colorful publicans and their customers.

English Pub Charm.......2000-04-20
Tales from the Country Pub by Brian P. Martin
This book has a very special place in my home library. I only found out of it's existence two weeks ago from my cousin, who lives in Royston, England but grew up in Barley. The village of Barley was the setting for one of Mr. Martin's stories "Record Breaking Regulars". My brother and I have enjoyed many a "Pint" with family and friends at the Chequers in Barley. The record breaking regulars of the Barley Chequers were in fact my uncle and cousin.
Throughout my twenty years in the U.S. Naval Service, traveling around the world, I have visited many Bars, Taverns and the like, but not one of them can beat the very special charm of an Old English Country Pub.
With extreme prejudice, I rate this book with Five Stars. Douglas Howard, Hollywood, Maryland USA

Book Description
Some called it “alternative comedy”.Others called it “the new rock ’n’ roll”.Whatever it was, it spawned “The Young Ones”.Comedy changed on the 9th November 1982 when Rick, Vyvyan, Neil and Mike infi ltrated the safe world of the television sitcom. They farted, swore, hit each other and shouted a lot and comedy hasn’t been the same since. They weren’t nice; they were NASTY!This is the story of the conception and birth of “The Young Ones”, their ancestors, their playmates and, eventually, their offspring.

Not much detail at all. .......2006-01-31
I was really hoping this would have far more detail and information than it did as i really love this stuff. I found the book however to be quite amateur. And a lot of the information was quite superfluous. However the writer obviously is quite passionate about the subject of this New Wave comedy and this alone gives it two stars.

"'Whiter Shade Of Pale' remained their milestone, and their millstone. But Procol were always a band of quality and in Beyond The Pale they finally have the book they deserve."-Mojo. Claes Johansen spent many years researching Procol Harum's history from their early days through to the group's international status as one of the biggest attractions of the 60s and 70s. A profound and insightful look at one of Britain's finest ever rock acts.
Customer Reviews:
Valuable, But Flawed.......2000-10-29
Any Procol Harum fan will want this book for the wealth of information it gathers, especially about the band's early days. Johansen's musical insight, however, is limited and inconsistent, and he's almost painfully clueless about what Keith Reid's words -- the band's main attraction, of course -- are about (e.g., he doesn't seem aware that the narrator of "Crucifiction Lane" is Jesus, which, ahem, rather changes the meaning of the song, doesn't it?). And fans should check out procolharum.com for some commentary about the book's histotical accuracy.

Excellent Grass Roots (DIY) Feel.......2002-10-02
A modern 'Catcher in the Rye'.
Eddie and his first book.......2002-06-28
Eddie - I love you, I remember you as you were struggling with
the world, the book agents, st. martin's press, and rave
culture.
I remember your excitement in this publication 4 years ago.
I remember reading your new manuscripts for "Broken" just
last year - and I eagerly await the release of your new
book. So do it!! Do it now!!
For all the rest of you. 200 BPM is a fantastic read, a great
glimpse into the heart and soul of Americana waiting, struggling
to find an identity in itself in the face of the hypocracy of
suburban life. It engages the self indulgancy of youth, a
phenomenon which is at once beautiful and frightening - the
honesty of its articulation and the playful experimentation of
its release is fantastically well captured in these pages.
Then, with me, eagerly await the release of Eddie's forthcoming
book (as I demand it be forthcoming). A look into the demise
of that very youth, and perhaps a more mature coming of age in
the postmodern precept of adulthood and identity.
ciao!
A Good First Try at Writing.......2000-12-24
Obviously this author's first book, it was frought with typos and other literary faux pas. That being said, the book is entertaining. The author has a wonderful vocabulary and is very expressive, I enjoyed his writing style. However, the character development was slow and choppy. I think the author has alot of potential which will reveal itself better when he writes about more diverse topics instead of drug binges from beginning to end.
Numb.......1999-12-28
to compare this book to the Ecstasy Club is such an insult. yes the characters are self-indulgent. yes they're selfish, bratty and irresponsible. that's the whole point. does anybody get it? it's about what happens when youthful ideals and naieve blue-sky optimism are corrupted by drugs and greed. this is the dark side of the moon. explore it.
Self indulgent and dull..........1999-11-28
To be honest, I have not managed to finish reading the book because it's self indulgent and dull. I have read the 'Ecstacy club' by Douglas Rushkoff and it's along the same lines as this. If you want to understand more about the rave scene, '200 BPM' definitely gives you an accurate picture of the drug scene - the immaturity of the ravers, the escapism, the pathetic search for the next high, the selfishness of party scene and the stupidity as people throw away challenges to face life's realities. If you want to read a good book, this isn't it. The hero wallows in his own self interest, with endless descriptions of his current altered state of being - hardly an interesting topic. You want to shake him and tell him to wake up and start really living life - have the courage to spend days and nights awake and fully conscious. I personally look for books in which at least the hero is inspirational in some way - this isn't that type of book. Definitely not for me.
Book Description
The African Rank-and-File explores why East Africans in the King's African Rifles (KAR) served a foreign power, which denied them the rights of full citizenship and was at best paternalistic and at worst openly oppressive. The KAR was a viable institution because it advanced, to varying degrees, the interests of the colonial state, the British military establishment, and African soldiers. These interests were quite often contradictory, and it took an ongoing process of negotiation and accommodation over the social status of the African soldiery to make the KAR work. Tensions such as these were not unique to the colonial military; the co-option of Africans as chiefs, policemen, teachers, and clergymen produced similar points of friction. Like other important intermediary classes, African soldiers performed a vital service for the colonial regime and sought to exploit its inherent weaknesses to enhance their position in colonial society. Their ability to do so exposed some of the most fu

From the awared winning and number one rated Fox News Channel hosted by Oliver North, War Stories highlights the most riveting stories of monumental battles in American history. North brings to life the heroic and sometimes gruesome World War II battles from the Pacific.
Customer Reviews:
WWII History at its' Best.......2006-09-23
War Stories II is a must have for history buffs or novices alike. First hand accounts along with maps and excellent research lead you through the war in the Pacific step by step. The war in the Pacific was especially bloody and costly simply because we were fighting an enemy that preferred death to defeat. The Geneva Conventions Accord meant nothing to the Japanese. You will feel just about every emotion available to you. My feelings were anger, disgust and shock. War is a terrible thing but the war in the Pacific was brutal and inhumane. You will not have a dull moment in this great book, from cover to cover. This should be required reading for all High School students.
About Heroes and Written by One.......2006-08-25
A wonderful book with a DVD containing interviews of some of the greatest generation who fought for our future. Dopes like Joseph from San Diego, who put down Lt. Colonel North, would'nt know a heroe if he had to spit on one. Physical cowards like Joseph show the weakness of the younger generation. I was in the Marines and know how honorable people like my WWII Colonel grandfather and his kind are. You liberals live your spoiled lives because of people like him, the ones in this book, and Lt. Colonel North. Hey Joseph, cover your ears because this will hurt: "GOD BLESS AMERICA!"
Oliver goes south.......2006-07-05
What would Oliver North be able to tell us about honor? Isn't this the same Oliver North who stumbled into the spotlight as a Reagan-administration fall guy, and prime suspect in the Iran-Contra scandal of the mid-1980s? I'm sure that one story of WWII valor that goes unrecalled in Ollie's book is that of Congressional Medal of Honor winner Senator Daniel Inoue of Hawaii. After all, Senator Inoue (who lost an arm during fighting in Italy while serving with the legendary Japanese-American 442 Regiment) presided over the Senate committee which investigated the Iran-Contra scandal, and when, during cross-examination, North questioned Inoue's patriotism, he was soundly chastised by other committee members present who had to point out to North the enormity of Inoue's sacrifice and the depth of his honor. North's reply was incredulity; after all, he had just displayed and unforgivable ingnorance of WWII history, and had embarrassed himself and his uniform in the process. I'll give this book - and it's author - a pass.
Excellent histories.......2005-12-02
Since I'm not much of a fan of cousin Olie it bothers me that I like the book so much. But what can you say? It's an excellent history filled with detail and insight that I think only an ex-combat marine would see. Very readable and interesting. A very decent work that will personalize the battles that more academic historians write about.
Great snapshot of the war on Japan.......2005-09-19
For someone who has forgotten many of the details of the pacific war with Japan, this was an excellent refresher on the battles, the key events, and the struggles that took place in a part of the war that is often overshadowed by the European theater. More than that, it is a snapshot of the feeling, emotions, sights and smells of the battlefield, of heroism, and of fear.
I quite enjoyed North's easy writing style, and his ability to cut to the quick of a battle or an event. This is not a book which spends time discussing the politics, ideologies, or controversies that surround the war, but sticks to the knitting.
I particularly enjoyed reading about some of the events that I was previously completely unaware of such as the account of the mini-subs that helped (?) in the attack of Pearl Harbor.
If you are looking for critical analysis of the war, this is not the book for you. It is, unapologetically, a general overview of what happened, what was important, and how it affected the ultimate conclusion.

Book Description
This epic story opens at the hour the Greatest Generation went to war on December 7, 1941, and follows four U.S. Navy ships and their crews in the Pacific until their day of reckoning three years later with a far different enemy: a deadly typhoon. In December 1944, while supporting General MacArthur's invasion of the Philippines, Admiral William "Bull" Halsey neglected the Law of Storms—the unofficial bible of all seamen since the days of sail—placing the mighty U.S. Third Fleet in harm's way. One of the most powerful fighting fleets ever assembled under any flag, the Third Fleet sailed directly into the largest storm the U.S. Navy had ever encountered—a maelstrom of 90-foot seas and 160-mph winds. More men were lost and ships sunk and damaged than in most combat engagements in the Pacific. The final toll: 3 ships sunk, 28 ships damaged, 146 aircraft destroyed, and 756 men lost at sea.
In all, 92 survivors from the three sunken ships (each carrying a crew of about 300) were rescued, some after spending up to 80 hours in the water. Scores more had made it off their sinking ships only to perish in the monstrous seas; some from injuries and exhaustion, others snatched away by circling sharks before their horrified shipmates. In the far-flung rescue operations Bruce Henderson finds some of the story's truest heroes, exhibiting selflessness, courage, and even defiance. One badly damaged ship, whose Naval Reserve skipper disobeyed an admiral's orders to abandon the search, single-handedly saved 55 lives.
Drawing on extensive interviews with nearly every living survivor and rescuer, many families of lost sailors, transcripts and other records from two naval courts of inquiry, ships' logs and action reports, personal letters, and diaries, Bruce Henderson offers the most thorough and riveting account to date of one of the greatest naval dramas of World War II.

Book Description
Well over a century after Darwin gave biology its unifying theory of evolution, the earth sciences experienced a similar revolution and the theory of plate tectonics took hold. Plate tectonics posed the idea that the earth's crust is divided into a number of large, thin plates always in motion relative to one another. In The Behavior of the Earth, world-renowned earth scientist Claude Allègre sets forth the exciting events in this contemporary revolution from its first stirrings in the nineteenth-century and Alfred Wegener's original model of continental drift (1912) through the development of its full potential in modern plate-tectonic theory. Few scientific theories have been so all-encompassing, and none has surpassed plate tectonics in explaining such a wide variety of geological phenomena, from the origins of mountain building to the formation of the ocean floor. As it integrated our knowledge of the earth's surface with the investigation of its interior, plate tectonics fused two previously autonomous strains of scientific inquiry. Continental mobility changed for all time our view of the earth from a static globe to an evolving, living planet, and allowed us to see that changes in the earth's surface are but exterior manifestations of a dynamic interplay of forces within the crust and the mantle. Allègre casts his lucid exposition of this scientific theory within the historical context of its struggle for acceptance. As he introduces us to the huge cast of personalities and researchers who contributed to the theory, he illuminates the complex role that the scientific community plays in the proliferation and acceptance of new ideas. Allègre is as insightful in discussing the human motivation for scientific endeavor as he is skillful in presenting the science that results from this effort. Richly illustrated and including a glossary, this book offers the reader rare access both to the central theory of plate tectonics and to the constellation of problems and possibilities that preoccupy earth scientists today.
Customer Reviews:
I got here from there.......2006-04-25
I started reading Vincent Courtillot's Evolutionary Catastrophes (volcanism) first in order to gain a handle on the mass extinction argument and found that this book challenges Walter Alvarez's book T. Rex And The Crater of Doom (comet or asteroid bombardment). Therefore, I started reading that at the same time; which got me to pull out and start skimming David Levy's Impact Jupiter (comet expert). In the meantime, I thought it prudent to start reading The Behavior of the Earth by Claude Allegre (plate tectonics), and picked up Steven Stanley's book Extinction (global climate change). Recently I saw via a Google search that Linda Elkins-Tanton now thinks that perhaps meteorite bombardment could have allowed hot magma to vent thus causing global climate change and hence the mass extinctions. This is fun!
Superb Introduction to Plate Tectonics.......2005-09-03
The grumpiness and even hidebound intransigence of 'traditional geologists' who see their entire geological worldview literally swept away by the breathtaking scope of Plate Tectonic theory is a fascinating aspect of the human side of science shown in books such as John McPhee's. McPhee himself notes this, referring to geosynclines -- a mainstay of the 'old' geology -- as "a rational fiction", and that "he is following a science as it lurches forward from error to discovery and back to error" (referring to an early mis-constructions).
A book I glanced through, _The Colorado Plateau : a geologic history_, by Daniel L. Baars, has an editorial-style Preface written by just such an annoyed 'old geologist', excoriating the "religious fervour" shown by adherents to the new theory. And I might add that, after reading several books with PT as a basis, I found this book (written in the '70s and re-printed), with it's 'old-style' terminology and complete lack of the plate-tectonic grand-scale overview of why such-and-such a geological feature is there in the first place, to be quite unreadable and boring in the extreme.
_The Behavior of the Earth: Continental and Seafloor Mobility_, on the other hand, is neither boring nor unreadable, while providing an excellent historical approach to presenting PT theory, from Wegener to the current period (1988 was the date of publication, but this is no drawback from this general reader's perspective). It pays very welcome attention to the subject from a History of Science perspective, with careful attention to the scientists who provided each new advancement, while explaining the technical aspects of the theory with many pictures and diagrams. I found it an excellent supplement to McPhee's books, which mostly lack visuals to fill out his word-pictures, and I referred many times to the seafloor-spreading and ocean-basin maps while reading McPhee.

Book Description
Water is in the air we breathe and beneath the ground we walk on. The very substance of life, it makes up as much as 60 percent of the human body. And yet, for one billion people there is such a thing as life without water. These are the people we meet in Dry--those who live in the dry lands of Africa, Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas, eking out an existence at once remarkable and mundane between craggy mountains, near oases, or close to well-springs surrounded by cracked earth or shifting sands.
From the ingenuity of the highland people of Chile's Atacama desert who use giant nets to capture water from clouds of fog, to the ancient wisdom that protects the grazing lands of Kenya's Masai, this beautifully illustrated book tells the diverse stories about people in very hot, very cold, or very high places, who spend their lives collecting, chasing, piping, and trapping the water that life requires--all the while taking great care that no form of life, plant or animal, benefits at the expense of another.
In a world of finite resources, where the struggle for shrinking sources of water intensifies daily, these stories--collected over three years by photographers, writers, and scientists from four continents--are a source of hope and wonder. This book contains a wealth of information and images designed to further awareness of the vast array of life that is carried on precariously yet proudly on the earth's dryest lands.
Customer Reviews:
Unevenly distributed, unevenly described.......2006-12-31
For my shower this morning I probably used more water than many of the people described in "Dry, Life Without Water" use for a whole month. Water is so scarce for them that a bath might indeed be a once in a lifetime event. It's not, of course, that I am particularly wasteful with water or that the world has a particular scarcity of water but that it is so unevenly distributed. And I think the thing that struck me most about this book is that the writing talent is so unevenly distributed as well.
As explained in the introduction of the book, it is the result of a grant by GEF (the Global Environment Facility) to an organization primarily funded by Italy and administered by UNESCO. The project's goal was to showcase best practices in conservation and best practices in arid and semi-arid environments around the world. Several conferences were held and many papers were written, some of which appear in edited form in this book. So, by it's nature, one would expect the writing to be diverse. I would not, however, expect it to be as bad as it is at times nor would the diversity excuse the rather sloppy editing and typographical errors. The pictures, mostly National Geographic quality, are not always captioned and not always relevant to the story they accompany.
Some articles are pure political fodder (income redistribution thinly disguised as "conservation") and one is blatant wishful thinking about the role that the author feels women in that country should have regarding agriculture. The women, one gets the feeling, stand at the kitchen door and direct the men what to plant and where to plant, harvest and process it. Other stories leave more questions than one would expect in a book of this sort. For example, one author whines about a species being domesticated without giving any reason why that should be a bad thing for the environment or the species in question. What were the editors thinking? I would expect more from a Harvard University Press product. The book reads more like a collection of Harvard freshman social sciences essays.
On the positive side, the description of fog catchers wringing useful amounts of water from moisture-laden coastal fog is absolutely fascinating; the comeback of the Incan vicuna in Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile heartening; and the building of microdams in Pakistan inspirational. For the most part there are no ground breaking scientific discoveries illustrated in this book. They are indeed just "best practices" that require people to reconsider their longstanding traditions and adopt something that will allow them to live a little better on the land they have chosen to live on.
