Ergonomics For Beginners: A Quick Reference Guide.......2002-07-13
I picked up a copy of the first edition of this book while working on my master's degree in ergonmics. I found it to be a useful quick reference. Once working as an ergonomist it proved to be a valuable tool. It is small enough to be easy to carry along when going out to work sites. The various illustrations are simple and clear; handy when explaining a concept. I've recommended it to workers, managers and supervisors who wanted a low-cost reference. It is a tool they can use after I'm gone to answer basic questions. In short, if you want one book about ergonomics and are concerned about cost then this one would be an excellent choice.

Book Description
Mathematical Programming and Financial Objectives for Scheduling Projects focuses on decision problems where the performance is measured in terms of money. As the title suggests, special attention is paid to financial objectives and the relationship of financial objectives to project schedules and scheduling. In addition, how schedules relate to other decisions is treated in detail. The book demonstrates that scheduling must be combined with project selection and financing, and that scheduling helps to give an answer to the planning issue of the amount of resources required for a project. The author makes clear the relevance of scheduling to cutting budget costs. The book is divided into six parts. The first part gives a brief introduction to project management. Part two examines scheduling projects in order to maximize their net present value. Part three considers capital rationing. Many decisions on selecting or rejecting a project cannot be made in isolation and multiple projects must be taken fully into account. Since the requests for capital resources depend on the schedules of the projects, scheduling taken on more complexity. Part four studies the resource usage of a project in greater detail. Part five discusses cases where the processing time of an activity is a decision to be made. Part six summarizes the main results that have been accomplished.

Written by Carrie Karasyov and Jill Kargman, childhood friends who met at one of New York's most elite prep schools, The Right Address seeks to expose the cruel and wicked ways of the top echelon of the Park Avenue crowd. Peppered with seemingly unbelievable accounts of social-climbing at its worst, the characters in this novel glide from party to party, relishing every possible chance to destroy each other's reputation while simultaneously air-kissing one another. The story revolves around Melanie Sartomsky, a former airline stewardess who is thrust into the world of shatoosh parties ("they make cashmere feel like emery boards") and Narcolepsy benefits after she marries Arthur Korn, a billionaire who found his fortune in funeral homes. As Melanie tries to adjust to her new life, the authors expose us to the darker side of high society--steamy affairs between CEOs and their custodial staff, salacious scandals in Harlem flophouses, and a discreet arrangement between a kleptomaniac's husband and Tiffany, where this pedigreed socialite enjoys pocketing the wares.
A prime example of the Gossip Lit genre, which began its ascent after The Nanny Diaries and The Devil Wears Prada hit the scene, The Right Address could have been an amusing, albeit extreme, expose of the lives of the rich and well, rich. However, the unsteady cadence of the novel, coupled with the absence of any real human emotion, turn this effort into simply one nasty gossip session after another. The reader never feels invested in any of the many characters, and even when our heroine comes to her senses, there's no real sense of relief or delight. So while the tell-all nature of the book may make it hard to put down, the only real joy lies in the fact it ends quickly. --Gisele Toueg
Book Description
The Right Address sears through the upper crust of New York’s glittering Park Avenue scene to dish the dirt on the ladies who lunch, the gents who club, and the desperate climbers who will stop at nothing to join the backstabbing, champagne-sipping, socialite-eat-socialite stratosphere.
When Melanie Sartomsky, wily Floridian flight attendant, snares billionaire divorcée Arthur “the coffin king” Korn, she is catapulted into the crème de la crème of Park Avenue society, where hiring the wrong decorator is tantamount to social suicide, and where, if you’re anyone, your personal assistant has a personal assistant. But Melanie quickly discovers that in the world of the rich and idle, malicious gossip is as de rigeur as owning twenty pairs of Manolo Blahniks. And despite her frenzied plunge into the charity circuit and the right dinner reservations, her neighbors are Givenchy-clad vultures who see her as nothing more than a reinvented trailer trollop. To make matters worse, when a snide society-rag journalist rakes her over the coals, Melanie’s reputation is toast.
Meanwhile, Melanie is not the only billionaire in the neighborhood coming unhinged. Kleptomania, adultery, plagiarism, and a grisly Harlem sex murder are just a few of the secrets swirling under the pedigreed patina of furs and emeralds on Park Avenue.
Customer Reviews:
Not Their Best Book.......2007-09-18
It's a tired cliche about a lower-class woman from Florida being shunned because she wasn't of right background, upper-class adultery, one of them involving a Mexican housekeeper turned mistress of a very prominent man whose life with his proper wife has been of boredom, yadda, yadda. A "gay" man gets murdered in the "wrong part" of town.
This book has loads of cliches of the upper class. It wasn't well-written. I recommend Plum's book, Bergdorf Blondes or The Nanny Diaries. At least those books aren't boring.
No Real Insight.......2007-09-06
Having read and enjoyed The Nanny Diaries and The Devil Wears Prada, I thought that this book would satirize and expose the world of the rich and the spoiled in the same manner those books do but that was simply not the case.
The characters in this book were very cardboard. Of all of the, Mr. Guffey the butler was probably my favorite but even he fairly screamed "Stereotypical British Butler Alert!" The authors tried to give their characters some personality and to make them likable but they didn't quite succeed.
I found Melanie sympathetic for maybe the first few pages but, really, she wasn't any better than any of the other women for whom she was supposed to be a foil. She proved to be every bit as pretentious and to have just as much of a lack of regard for those less fortunate than herself. I found it really appalling that someone who supposedly came from her background would be so very cavalier about the charitable events with which she is so eager to associate herself--solely to help her in her self-serving quest to become an accepted member of the upper crust. By the time her change of heart arrived, it was too late. By that point I had already written her off.
As one of the other reviewers pointed out, the subplot involving the rich Mr. Vance and his mistress is really rather nasty. Yes, his mistress is a nightmare but she is very stereotypically portrayed. It seemed like the very fact of her ethnicity instantly excluded her from the ranks of those who are supposedly sophisticated and well heeled. Vance's plot to eliminate his problem was really rather disgusting. I found it very difficult to feel sorry for someone who had made his own bed and then refused to lie in it.
In the end, this book really offered nothing by way of insight into this world. The Nanny Diaries did a much better job of offering up reasons for what drives people of affluence to act as they do. This book attempts to do the same but, in the end, it's basically a sneering portrait of high society. The "good" characters get their (very predictable) just deserts and their happily ever after while the "bad" characters get their supposed comeuppance, rendering this book every bit as shallow as the society it is supposed to portray.
The dangers of editing by spell check..........2007-06-22
If this book were about anything other than Park Avenue Princesses, I might let it slide. But, to gush over their "brilliant" editor and claim an "elite boarding school" background when errors such as "MASON du Chocolat" and "petits FOUR" show up in your book is, as Joan and Wendy would snark, "tacky, Tacky, TACKY!!"
Typos aside, the writing is as wooden as one of Artie "The Coffin King" Korn's top o' the line teakwood specials.
Save your money and read Michael Gross' 740 Park instead.
The Worst.......2007-01-24
This was, by far, the worst book I have ever forced myself to finish in my life. This book has it all, horrible writing,it is completely disjointed, silly, cliche', trite and , worst of all, boring. I am embarrassed to say I have read it! The book was a gift from a friend who had not read it.
I am amazed that such drivel was published!I read a lot and trust that there are variances in taste and style ,but to have been subjected to such nonsense was galling.I wanted to throw it away after ten pages but out of faith in literary institutions, I assumed it would get better, I was very wrong! As an avid reader,I feel robbed that I spent a few hours giving this nonsense a chance!
Do Yourself A Favor - Don't Buy This Book!.......2007-01-09
I'd actually wanted to read this just because I heard about it from another traveler... well, when I did track one down, my expectations fell flat at the first evidence of bad research. There's no such thing as a triple-wide motor home! Mobile home, yes; RV, nooo. 'Trailer trash' isn't an epithet ordinarily handed out to those living in an RV park in Florida (some of those babies start at a half-mil and go up). I cringed and kept going; maybe this was just an editor's error.
Oh, I wished it had been! Lame stereotyped characters, silly things thrown in for who-knows-what reason, page after page of tripe. Four chapters went by before I realized it wasn't going to get better. I kept going, anyway, because this book is like a train wreck. It's awful, but one keeps going to see how not to have or cause another. I'm a writer. At this point, I was looking for all the things I never wanted to see in my own writing!
I actually enjoyed The Nanny Diaries and The Devil Wears Prada, but this thing? Oh, please. Save yourself the money, and the pain, and don't even bother checking it out from the library. Unless you're a writer studying how NOT to please your intended audience, don't read this book!
The only reason I show one star is the system won't let me leave a big goose-egg with this review. This thing isn't even worth one!

Customer Reviews:
A Great Guide to 'What's Normal' in the Pentagon.......2007-09-04
A great book, highly recommended for anyone working in the Pentagon! I'm in my first Pentagon tour, and found this book immensely useful. My initial impression of Pentagon life was professional bewilderment: totally new vocabulary, totally new set of concerns, different rules for doing business. Much more so than with most of my 'new' jobs along the way, this one totally threw me off with with respect to the norms and expectations.
There are many courses for navigating these strange waters (most of which I've attended), but there's so much to learn that these courses are primarily focused on the "What Is It, and How Does It Work?" level. The "What's normal?" level is usually left off the end (due to time constraints), for the student to work out on his/her own. I've been blessed with very patient bosses, and have been allowed to work out 'normal' for myself, but I frequently had so many questions that I'd hesistate asking them all at once. And then came Assignment Pentagon - a life saver.
I stumbled across Assignment Pentagon about three months into the job - 2-1/2 months too late! Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down - it spoke to my nagging questions and left me a MUCH better informed Action/Requirements Officer. The turn-around in professional understanding was so profound for me that I've been recommending it to anyone else that checks in here, and think it's absolutely critical to understand the place you work in the depth that Assignment Pentagon delivers it.
Many thanks to the authors for putting this much-needed work together, and for keeping it updated. I only hope that they're still updating it when I've got my next set of orders to the Pentagon.
Some Interesting Insights.......2007-04-21
This book was first published in the 1980s, and has been apparently revised as recently as March 2007. The edition I read comes from 2002. The book is interesting. It fulfills its billing as a straight guide to what is important inside the big five-sided building along the Potomac River.
Maj Gen Smith's most interesting piece of insight comes about half way through in his discussion of the media and the Pentagon leadership. In discussing the role of the daily "Early Bird" news roundup, Gen Smith asserts that senior Pentagon leaders read the volume diligently, seeing the press not as an antagonist, but rather as a source of new and interesting takes on what they may or may not already know.
Unfortunately, Gen Smith has a bad habit of occasionally interjecting his personal opinion into his otherwise objective analysis. Also, even though the book says it was revised for 2002, it appears that many sections of the book have not been updated since its original publication 15 years earlier.
All in all, this is a solid, brief overview, of some of what goes through Pentagon employees heads on a daily basis. It is worth the read for that reason if for no other.
up to date guide to thriving within a large organization.......2002-02-26
I am the author of this book. When the new administration took office, it was time to update this book about how the Pentagon works, how to work with the Pentagon and how to work within the Pentagon. There is an enormous amount of misinformation about the Pentagon and what I have tried to do is stick to the realities and to destroy some of the myths. I have received many comments about this book. The most surprising ones have come from people who work in corporations who have told me that this book has given them lots of ideas about how improve their performance in their present jobs.

KashKash came in 888, and Columbus was 500 years late!.......2006-12-14
Dr. Quick wrote this short treatise more than ten years ago and built upon Van Sertima's "They Came Before Columbus", which was published during the '70s. No doubt Quick's research has inspired the more recent book in this genre titled "1491".
In short, Quick tells us that Muslims long knew that the earth was round rather than flat as the Catholics believed. Before the creation of Spain in 1479, Iberia was mostly Muslim with a noted Jewish community (hence Catholics today holding the first name of "Jesus" when they're supposed to believe in trinity rather than mere prophethood - this is cultural baggage from their Muslim days).
The city of Cordoba was known back then as Qurtabah, and KashKash of Qurtabah had sailed west in 888 and returned with a ship filled with gold - everyone knew this legend even at the time of Columbus. And guess where Columbus studied? That's right - the same place he fathered an illegitimate child - Qurtabah, which was called Cordoba by then.
Columbus, who had also studied at Prince Henry's Navigation School in Portugal, put two and two together and figured out that the legend of KashKash was more than likely true. Columbus figured that KashKash had gone west to India and returned with some of their gold. And everyone during Columbus's time knew that India was richer than all the nations of Europe put together.
So Columbus approached the ruling monarchs of the new country called Spain and made his pitch of getting Indian gold - Muslim Indian gold! And the monarchs, fattened from the gold of the conquered Iberian Muslims, licked their chops at the prospect of stealing Indian Muslim gold and financed his raid. The unfortunate Native Americans were mistaken for gold-rich Indians, and the rest is hidden in "his story".
This is an important book. Yes, European Muslims came to the Mayas and the resulting small pox wiped out their city long before Columbus and the Catholics. KashKash unwittingly had left behind smallpox. For over two centuries no Native American went near the smallpox-contaminated Mayan city. With the rise of the Aztecs, the Native Americans slowly went back to that cursed site. Then Columbus followed by Cortes brought back the smallpox - it was nearly genocide.
This small treatise should sit on one's shelf beside a copy of the Diary of Columbus. Yes, he kept one. And you will shed tears for the innocent American victims of Spanish cruelty.

Book Description
The goal of this book is to apply the principles of acoustics to the audio arts. This involves serving as an interpreter of major trends and the literature for students and practitioners in the audio field. Along with covering the more theoretical aspects of acoustics, the book applies the theory to the design of specialized audio spaces such as the home listening room, the control room, and the multi-track-recording studio.
Customer Reviews:
Title may be misleading.......2007-07-25
There are two common definitions of the word "acoustics." The most general is "an area of physics dealing with sound and sound waves" and the second is "the qualities of a room that determine audibility and fidelity of sound in it." This book is a very good reference for the latter, but if you're looking for the former, look elsewhere. Also, I'm not sure I would describe it as a Handbook, but rather as a reference text.
It is good for what it does cover and is relatively easy to read.
A book for the advnaced.......2007-07-09
A great book, but can be too advanced for some. A lot of physics is included - which is great - but perhaps some previous knowledge or some side reading is a good idea.
Over all, excellent book, and a goldmine to buy.

It is nice REFERENCE book for practicing sound engineer. If you in a process of setting up your home studio and need quick and meaningful start get Acoustics for producer and musician, includes SoundsAcademy Certification and it will take you inside the subject fast and straight to the point.
This book addresses room acoustics and in this regard is superb reference but many music related aspects of acoustics aren't there. For room acoustics treatment this book is very useful though.
A recording studio masterpiece.......2006-04-27
OK, so this does not cover ALL acoustincs. If one is interested in recording or playback acoustics, this is THE BEST. As an engineer and producer who has been involved in the construction of a dozen studios, I have the clients and architects read this before we start hard design parameters. For lay listeners, the chances are good your audio budget is better spent on acoustic treatment rather than a more exotic cable. For all of the above, this book will explain the what, why and how to get results. For professionals, it explains how to obtain designable results. I find it an easy read, and I refer to it occasionally, particularly when discussing room acoustics with neophyte "sound men" and audio engineers. I'd read it if I were you.
Have you got time?.......2006-03-27
Despite its title, this book should better be called Master Handbook of Room Acoustics, as it is primarily and almost solely dedicated to the acoustics of enclosed rooms. With its over 600 pages you will need a large hand, and plenty of time to read. But the information you gather when reading the main text, could have been presented in less than half the number of pages. Despite - or is it because - the abundance of words and excursions into anecdotes, the explanations are sometimes missing the clue. The last few chapters have been written by others authors, and are more to the point. Besides, these co-authors use the SI system, while the main text is using American units. A bit out of time, I would say.

Title doesn't properly reflect subject matter.......2004-11-23
Not that this is really a bad book, maybe a little dated, but the title really doesn't reflect the subject matter. This book deals more with the math and science (formulas and equations) behind "live" studio recording philosophies/practices than it does 'Audio' "PRODUCTION". There is some useful information for someone wanting to design their own multi-faceted video and audio recording studio (in the professional realm), but hardly anything geared towards home studio applications. Part of the reason I bought this book was because I saw it had a section on acoustics, and I am currently trying to read up on everything I can about acoustically treating my home studio. The "acoustics" chapter of this book dealt almost entirely with wind noise in air ducts and tonal vibrations due to large blower motors (that you might encounter in a large studio facility).
If you are looking for a more in-depth disection of the math behind condenser mics and line-signal paths, etc., then this is the book for you. If you are looking for real-world applications for the common "Home Studio" then I would suggest another read.
Book Description
Gezon argues that local events continuously redefine and challenge global processes of land use and land degradation. Her ethnographic study of Antankarana-identifying rice farmers and cattle herders in northern Madagascar weaves together an analysis of remotely sensed images of land cover over time with ethnographies of situated negotiations between human actors. Her book will be particularly valuable to researchers and students in anthropology, geography, sociology, and environmental studies, and those involved in conservation and resource management.
