4 out of 5 stars please turn WEP on, for your sake.......2006-03-11

A straightforward book, if you can ignore the annoying Geeks On Call format. It shows how to easily set up your wireless local area network. With liberal screen shots of this process.

Just as importantly, it explains the need for installing Wireless Encryption Protocol and how to do so. Many people often neglect this. Which can lead to complete strangers driving by your location (home?) and connecting to the Internet courtesy of your network. Some of you may not have a problem with this. But a stranger doing so might also try to attack and damage your machines. Along with garnering any personal data on you and your family. So turn WEP on!

And please use nontrivial, nondefault passwords whenever possible.

5 out of 5 stars The Life of Jesus in Small Nugget Form.......2000-06-24

This book gives practical advice in communication and interaction with others using examples from the life of Jesus. It is set up a bit like a daily devotional rather than chapter form. Each "nugget" is one or two pages long and includes both a title and theme quote. Some examples of theme quotes from the book are. - Jesus was authoritative, not authoritarian. - Jesus kept his finger on the pulse of the world. - Look for several people you want for friends. - Jesus kept his complaints private. - Jesus went beyond doing good things for good people. - People become what you call them. - Jesus was discreet in his use of power. - Jesus dealt directly with his enemies. These are just of few of the 59 miniature power lessons from the life of Jesus. This makes a great gift or coffee table book as well as helpful personal tool.

5 out of 5 stars Making a Difference.......2007-07-09

This book is a must read if anyone wants to impact other peoples lives in a positive way. Jesus was perfect in all his ways, but this book looks at how Jesus related to people. He saw people for exactly who they were and lovingly exposed their true character and motives so that they could see themselves as God sees them. The many examples in this book that reveal how we should treat others is inspiring and will bless anyone who reads it..

    Book Description

The statistics are alarming--in the world, in the Church, in temple marriages. Divorce is all too common among today. Of every 100 U.S. couples who marry, 40 to 50 couples will eventually divorce. In this new collection, a variety of mental health professionals and others present their Latter-day Saint perspectives on divorce and related issues. The book discusses women and divorce, men and divorce, children and divorce, dating again, blended families, remarriage, marriage counseling, and so on. All but one of the contributing authors can speak from personal experience about divorce. This book, which will help couples contemplating divorce and men and women who are working through divorce, offers guidance, ideas, comfort and gospel perspective for those struggling through the painful experience of divorce. Author Dr. A. Dean Byrd writes, "After divorce lives can be put back together. Healing can occur." This hopeful message can help people begin that healing process.

          Book Description

It is a well-known fact that eutrophication of coastal waters causes significant changes in the species composition of the primary producers. Usually a shift from an ecosystem dominated by sea grasses or large brown algae to an ecosystem dominated by fast-growing green algae or phytoplankton is observed. While this shift has been documented in a number of research papers and books, the consequences of this shift are less well known. This book focuses on the consequences of such changes for nutrient cycling.

The aim is to investigate how different types of primary producers influence nutrient cycling in coastal marine waters, and how nutrient cycling changes qualitatively and quantitatively as a consequence of the changes in the primary producer community caused by eutrophication. The various chapters address specific ecological processes such as grazing, decomposition, burial and export of biomass from the ecosystem. The book is intended for researchers and professionals working in the field of coastal marine ecology and estuarine ecology and for advanced students in this field.

            Book Description

This volume contains 17 selected papers reflecting the flavour of the Norwegian Petroleum Society conference on hydrocarbon seals quantification and showing the recent significant advances in the understanding and application of hydrocarbon seal methodologies.

Three broad categories are covered in this book: methodologies addressing cap-rock integrity, methodologies relating to fault seal and case studies both from the hydrocarbon basins of Northwestern Europe and in the form of outcrop examples. With the North Sea, Norwegian Sea and Atlantic Margin moving along their respective basin maturity and development curves, exploration is being forced deeper into high pressure/high temperature terrains, while exploitation and development requires greater precision and realism in reservoir simulations to maximise drilling strategies to prolong field life. In all instances the need for predictive tools and methodologies that address the integrity and behaviour of top and lateral (fault) seals to hydrocarbon traps, both in the static and dynamic state, have been identified as key risk factors and this is reflected in this volume.

              Book Description

The quantum interference of DeBroglie matter waves is probably one of the most startling and fundamental aspect of quantum mechanics. It continues to tax our imaginations and leads us to new experimental windows on nature. Quantum interference phenomena are vividly displayed in the wide assembly of neutron interferometry experiments, which have been carried out since the first demonstration of a perfect silicon crystal interferometer in 1974. Since the neutron experiences all four fundamental forces of nature (strong, weak, electromagnetic, and gravitational), interferometry with neutrons provides a fertile testing ground for theory and precision measurements. Many Gedanken experiments of quantum mechanics have become real due to neutron interferometry. This book provides the reader with a detailed account of neutron interferometry experiments. The basic ideas and experiments related to coherence properties of matter waves and various post-selection criteria, gravitationally induced phase shifts, Berry's geometrical phase, spinor symmetry and spin superposition, Aharonov-Bohm topological interference effects, and the neutron version of the Sagnac effect are presented in a self-contained and pedagogical way. Interferometry with perfect crystals, artificial lattices, and spin-echo systems are topics of this book. It includes the theoretical motivations as well as connections to other areas of experimental physics, such as quantum optics, nuclear physics, gravitation, and atom interferometry. The book is written in a style that will be suitable at the beginning graduate level, and will excite many students and researchers in neutron physics, quantum optics, and atomic physics. Lecturers teaching courses in modern physics and quantum mechanics will find a number of interesting and historic experiments they may want to include in their lectures.

              Book Description

The bestselling author who made mincemeat of political correctness in Thank You for Smoking, conspiracy theories in Little Green Men, and Presidential indiscretions No Way to Treat a First Lady now takes on the hottest topic in the entire world–Arab-American relations–in a blistering comic novel sure to offend the few it doesn’t delight.

Appalled by the punishment of her rebellious friend Nazrah, youngest and most petulant wife of Prince Bawad of Wasabia, Florence Farfarletti decides to draw a line in the sand. As Deputy to the deputy assistant secretary for Near East Affairs, Florence invents a far-reaching, wide-ranging plan for female emancipation in that part of the world.

The U.S. government, of course, tells her to forget it. Publicly, that is. Privately, she’s enlisted in a top-secret mission to impose equal rights for the sexes on the small emirate of Matar (pronounced “Mutter”), the “Switzerland of the Persian Gulf.” Her crack team: a CIA killer, a snappy PR man, and a brilliant but frustrated gay bureaucrat. Her weapon: TV shows.

The lineup on TV Matar includes A Thousand and One Mornings, a daytime talk show that features self-defense tips to be used against boyfriends during Ramadan; an addictive soap opera featuring strangely familiar members of the Matar royal family; and a sitcom about an inept but ruthless squad of religious police, pitched as “Friends from Hell.”

The result: the first deadly car bombs in the country since 1936, a fatwa against the station’s entire staff, a struggle for control of the kingdom, and, of course, interference from the French. And that’s only the beginning.

A merciless dismantling of both American ineptitude and Arabic intolerance, Florence of Arabia is Christopher Buckley’s funniest and most serious novel yet, a biting satire of how U.S. good intentions can cause the Shiite to hit the fan.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding pointed (and poignant) satire.......2007-04-25

I knew that _Florence of Arabia_ wasn't going to pull punches from the opening paragraphs, describing -- with only minor changes to the emblem -- the actual location and appearance of the Saudi Arabian diplomatic residence on Chain Bridge Road in McLean. I know because I drove by that residence scores of times in the eight years that I lived in the DC area. And while the satire gets broad at time, I wonder if it could ever exceed the ludicrous reality of Middle East society and politics, both internal and international.

More importantly, _Florence of Arabia_ makes you care about the characters and care about the reality as well -- again, rare traits for a satire, which usually struggles just to keep you amused and often fails when it becomes didactic or polemic.

This is an excellent work, in all sense of that phrase. And speaking of phrases, I continue to be haunted by this one: "One way or the other...we're all working for investment bankers." Read the book. ..bruce..

              5 out of 5 stars Funny! Scary!.......2007-04-05

The premise of this exceptional book is silly - send an American woman to a moderate Middle Eastern country to start up an Oprah-like gab-fest for the veiled ladies of the Middle East, rile them up by showing them what they are lacking, and let them lead the revolt to free the Middle East of tyranny, mullahs, and Sharia. This is funny stuff and it actually makes sense. But there are men - American government official? - working behind the scenes, pulling the strings, stirring the pot. What begins as a funny romp of cultural clashes ends as a searing yet plausible expose of who really runs the world. For anyone interested in what is going on in the world today, and anyone that likes a good conspiracy - this is a must read.

2 out of 5 stars Junk food that is junk.......2006-11-29

I love good ice cream. My waist line demonstrates that. And I love reading comic and satirical and politically incorrect literature. My bookshelves attest to that. Ever buy a half gallon of cheap ice cream? It has a delightful picture on the box, carefully sculpted and glistening pleasure, but when you open it up, the flavor and texture are corn starch and wax. And the next time you open it, there's some weird congealed stuff in the corner that looks like, well, like things we cannot mention here. So although the box is labeled ice cream, and the picture promises fun and frivolity, and it was in the freezer next to real ice cream, the actual product is something far removed from what ice cream should be.

This book is like that. It feels like a comic novel, with comic characters, funny names, and snappy dialog. It has many paragraphs that are clearly supposed to be funny. I can imagine someone, somewhere laughing aloud at this; maybe the author and his friends. Yet never was I thoroughly engaged, and only on a couple of occasions did I even chuckle. That is not to say there is not some clever writing in here. There is. It's just that the wit is surrounded by mountains of tedium, and the occasional flashes almost startle with their rarity. This book was apparently written at breakneck speed, and it shows. The super-hero team, who become passionate lovers, outsmart, outshoot, outwit and outrun hordes of enemies, Muslim, French and American. Until the big discovery at the end. Yawnnnnnn..... I was just glad to close the book.

5 out of 5 stars Buckley Persuades Like No One Else.......2006-07-11

I sought this book because Buckley is my favorite author. I began with "Thank You For Smoking" and then read all of his works. Until this tome, only "Little Green Men" matched the superb wit and wordplay of TYFS.

This may be Buckley's best work yet. While I read it for the laughs, this novel is both informative and persuasive on the political circumstances of the middle east. Moreso than any editorial or talking head, this book demonstrates both the madness of the sheiks and playboy princes of the middle east, not to mention the mullahs, but also the futility of western intervention.

In the final analysis, this book may stand alongside Gulliver's Travels in the annals of great satire.

Brilliant, and I can't wait for Buckley's next work.

5 out of 5 stars Middle East Hijinks.......2006-05-26

In a country where the man at the helm is an ex drug fiend alcoholic, we're spreading liberty to people who want nothing more than to blow us up, and medicare is closing its doors to the elderly... you just need to escape.

Mr. Buckley one ups standard escapism - he keeps the horror of real life and saturates it in witty comedy, dialogue and situations.

You're still escaping from the terrible times we exist in... but he makes plenty of worthy references to keep us anchored.

This book is a quick, sinfully sweet read. Pick up a newspaper, read the Middle East news, and then pick up Florence.

It's a roadside bomb of pure genius!

                Book Description

Saddam Hussein is high on America's enemies list—but does an Iraq without him hold the seeds of the next Yugoslavia? To the dismay of many in the West, the Gulf War ended with Saddam Hussein still in control, still defiant, and determined to use any means of striking back. This book sounds an urgent note of caution: a future Iraq without Hussein could be even more unstable and more problematical to the security of the United States.

The Reckoning is an account of the forces—historical, religious, ethnic, and political—that produced Saddam's dictatorship. Iraq was forged after World War I from the Mesopotamian region of the collapsed Ottoman Empire, and its people have never had a national identity or a sense of common purpose. Hussein, ruling by terror, pitted the various ethnic groups, religious interests, and tribes against one another, and in so doing achieved the destruction of Iraq's middle class and civilized society. After he goes, the country could be the site of conflict even more vicious than the Balkan wars. With a new epilogue for this paperback edition. 16 b/w photographs, 6 maps.

                3 out of 5 stars Decent background.......2006-05-30

Mackey does a good job drawing some of the historical background of Iraq. However, she gets a bit too emotional and political in her analysis of Gulf War I and II. A bit more balance and rationality would have sustained the book's credibility, which wanes toward the end.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best book on Iraq, but still worth the read.......2006-04-30

Sandra Mackey has somehow attracted the scorn of many amazon reviewers. The most familiar criticism is that she's never been to these countries and is just recycling old information. I don't beleive that just because a person has never been to a certain place, that that disqualifies that person from writing about it. I've never been to Iraq, but I'd like to think I know more than a bit about the place.

There are more general history books such as this about Iraq than perhaps any other Middle Eastern country, and of the ones I've read I would definitely say that Mackey has written one of the "good" ones. Some of the other books are too short, some focus heavily on certain time periods while breezing through others. Mackey's book covers a very broad time span and is of sufficient length and detail. There are some issues that she glosses over, particularly if the U.S. was doing something questionable, but on the whole, this is a book worth reading.

If you're only able to read one of these books about Iraq, I would recommend Anderson and Stansfield's Future Iraq: Democracy, Dictatorship, or Division? However, if you'd like to read multiple books about Iraq, make sure you get around to this one at some point.

4 out of 5 stars A prediction of the hardships to come........2006-04-23

This is the fourth book I have read from Mackey. She is a very good writer with great knowledge of the Middle East. This book has very limited accounts of what she found in Iraq, but investigates the coming conflict well. She details how an occupation of this country would lead to a Civil War between the Shiite, Sunni, and Kurd groups. How right she was.

Mackey details the short history of Iraq. This country is at the center of civilization in the Middle East, but few know of the disparite elements that make up the population. When the British took three provinces from the Ottoman Empire and put them together, the world should have known this was an artificial state. When they imposed the Sharifian Feisal I on the throne and put the Sunnis in power, they were asking for trouble. Since that time, government in Iraq has gone from bad to worse. Saddam or the Buthcher of Baghdad was the worst of all. What is left out is all the problems the Americans have faced in Iraq since that time. The author can righly state that I told you so.

For those interested in the conflict in Iraq, this is a nice, informative read. Mackey always does a good job of writing her books.

1 out of 5 stars Just plain awful.......2005-01-28

Don't bother buying this one. The author has a serious case of the "I's" and is more interested in herself than in the subjects she is researching. Even more unforgiving, I felt I had read a book that did nothing more than recycle old information and put it in a new suit.

4 out of 5 stars Probing the Complexities of Iraqi History and Policy.......2004-01-05

The Reckoning rates as indispensable reading and study for all students, policy analysts and makers, military leaders, and anyone interested in Iraq's historical basis and future development. Mackey begins with the ancient history of Mesopotamia and quickly transitions through to contemporary policy. She includes an afterword written on Christmas Day of 2002, with the winds of war billowing from Washington. Her detailed account of Saddam's legacy and struggle provides valuable insight to anyone with an interest in the region. Although she prescribes no policy recommendations for the future of Iraq, her final words remain an issue the U.S. continues to struggle with today. "To what extent was the U.S. going to be pulled into the abyss of Iraq?" This book provides a fantastic foundation to understand the formation and development of the Iraqi state before and during Hussein's reign.

My one critique: the book provides valuable insight into the complexities of Iraq and how the state became that way, but Mackey does not attempt to break new ground. She proposes no new policies to help future administrations, nor strategies to help military leaders, NGOs, diplomats or others attempting to negotiate the pitfalls of the region. Regardless, I am better off for having read the book, and the author presents plenty of detailed research. Her selected bibliography provides the reader with numerous sources, scholarly and otherwise. Some military units preparing to deploy to Iraq have bought every key leader a copy of Mackey's book. Those leaders will be much better prepared to understand the quagmire they are about to enter, regardless of whether they know what strategies to pursue.

Highly recommended for anyone interested in understanding the region or the news better.
