I purchased this book to use with a college class thinking it was a complete student kit. It is NOT - it is just the book. I am sure the text is fine, but I rated it with 2 stars for the confusion. This is only my first disappointment with Amazon - their delivery and service has been great other than this.

                  Book Description

This book collects the proceedings of the symposia held during the 36th IAG General Assembly. This international event, held every fourth year, serves as a forum to announce and record new achievements and the primary research directions of the worldwide geodetic community. The actual date of this assembly, on the verge of the 3rd millennium, adds a particular accent to the results and proposals collected here, which is especially exemplified by the new perspectives derived by the advanced tools and techniques of earth observation from space platforms. Not to be overlooked are the enhanced capabilities of the now classic navigation and positioning systems, under the collective name GNSS. Together with classic techniques like SLR, VLBI, Doris, Prare etc., these provide the capability for establishing a global reference frame at the millimeter level, which currently relates global with regional phenomena of the physics of the earth. In recent years, the surface of the earth has been surveyed with a SAR technique covering all the continents, while the ocean is continuously monitored by new altimetric missions. Furthermore, the gravity field is now measured from space and interpreted in terms of geodynamical phenomena. Even more accurate and high resolution missions are planned, the study of which has already strongly propelled new theoretical achievements in the field of gravity modeling. All this is contained in these proceedings, opening a window to the future of all these promising and exciting developments.

                  Book Description

Seeking Ultimates: An Intuitive Guide to Physics, Second Edition takes us on a journey that explores the limits of our scientific knowledge, emphasizing the gaps that are left. The book starts with everyday concepts such as temperature, and proceeds to energy, the Periodic Table, and then to more advanced ideas. The author examines the nature of time and entropy, chaos, quantum theory, cosmology, and some aspects of mathematics, confirming that our understanding is necessarily incomplete. Using references to historical figures in science as well as thought-provoking illustrations, Seeking Ultimates encourages you to consider your scientific knowledge in a new light. You will be able to reassess your belief in "truths" as presented (such as mathematical theorems) and to reconsider philosophical issues of theology and happiness. A comprehensive glossary explains in clear language the technical terms so that nonscientists can enjoy the text.

Penzler Pick, April 2000: The world of mystery has long accepted the occasional offbeat tour de force that veers into the realm of uncertain reality. Even if its author might be startled to hear it, The Many Aspects of Mobile Home Living fits comfortably, I think, into the splendid list that includes John Dickson Carr's The Burning Court, Russell Greenan's It Happened in Boston, and William Hjortsberg's Falling Angel. At the same time, it is like none of those books. Imagine John Grisham crossed with Alice Hoffman and you might come closer to what's going on in these highly entertaining pages.

The story itself offers interlocking strands that come together in the person of Evers Wheeling, a preternaturally young North Carolina judge who's headed to the dogs with his eyes wide open, "waiting to hit bottom," as he puts it. But just before he makes it there, into his life comes a blonde in trouble with an outrageous (and ever-mutating) tale of a brother who needs help avoiding a jail sentence. That this brother turns out not to resemble his sister in the slightest--he's an African-American dwarf, and strong for his size--is just a small surprise in the overall scheme of things. (Here you might start trying to picture The Maltese Falcon as rewritten by Charles Portis.)

There's an elusive prize, possibly a cache of rare stamps worth millions, and a decided falling-out between an uncertain alliance of thieves; there's also a brutal murder, one that's close enough to home to put Evers Wheeling on trial for his own life. In addition to all this, there's Evers's brother, Pascal, to reckon with: he's the one with the double-wide trailer parked back in the woods, the IQ that's off the charts, the preference for staying stoned, and the one trying to help his sibling in any way he can, no matter the illegality.

The Many Aspects of Mobile Home Living is enough to put Good Ole Boys back in style. But until Martin Clark writes his next book, I guess all I can do is go back and reread Michael Malone's equally memorable--and moving--Handling Sin, perhaps the best Southern novel of the past quarter-century. --Otto Penzler

                  Book Description

In this masterful debut, Martin Clark proves to be the heir apparent of great Southern raconteurs and the envy of more seasoned novelists as he takes us on a frantic tour of the modern south.

Hung over, beaten by the unforgiving sun, bitter at his estranged wife, and dreading the day’s docket of petty criminal cases, Judge Evers Wheeling is in need of something on the morning he's accosted by Ruth Esther English. Ruth Esther's strange story certainly is something, and Judge Wheeling finds himself in uncharted territory. Reluctantly agreeing to help Ruth Esther retrieve some stolen money, he recruits his pot-addled brother and a band of merry hangers-on for the big adventure. Raucous road trips, infidelity, suspected killers, winning Lotto tickets, drunken philosophical rants, and at least one naked woman tied to a road sign ensue in The Many Aspects of Mobile Home Living, one part legal thriller, one part murder mystery, and all parts all wild.

                  5 out of 5 stars very entertaining.......2007-03-25

The characters just jumped off the page and the comedy was very fun.

5 out of 5 stars GOOD FOR THE SUMMER.......2006-06-01

I'd rate the plot a five (it is really a twisting, fun ride), I'd give the chararcters a five, the writing a 4.5 and the themes and messages of the novel a four. Judge Wheeling and his gang are just perfect for a hammock or the beach. There's plenty of action and humor and just enough backbone to keep this from being fluff. I've started Mr. Clark's second, PLAIN HEATHEN MISCHIEF and it seems great, too.

3 out of 5 stars Did not redeem itself.......2005-06-02

You might enjoy this book, or you might be frustrated by it. I give this book a three star rating because it is an enjoyable read. I took away two stars because it is just so pointless! I kept expecting there to be a focus, for the characters to reveal themselves fully, for something that makes sense to happen. I guess that was my problem: I expected the book to make sense, and didn't just let it all flow... like the characters seemed to do.

5 out of 5 stars hilarious yet thoughtful.......2005-05-10

If you like the wacky world of Hiaasen or Toole or Malone, this is for you. It is hilarious AND thought-provoking. Clark writes with a Rhythm that makes you able to hear the voices while you read. This is authentic--you can tell this author DOES live in the south and does meet a lot of unique characters in his day. PS_To the reviewer who thought the writing was good, but the author was a "wanna be cool" kid: the author is a successful JUDGE in Virginia.

5 out of 5 stars THE NY TIMES IS WRONG.......2004-10-31

Despite all the buzz and hoopla, the NY Times got it wrong. This book isn't "the best legal thriller" ever written. No, you see, it's hardly a legal thriller at all as best I can tell, and I've read it twice as of this morning. This is a book with some characters from the legal world and some scenes that happen in the courtroom, but the book is so much better than that narrow area. It's trippy and wild and just plain out there. I loved the judge, Evers; he's funny, believable and at times frustrating. That makes him real. A HUMAN BEING. The three or four plots keep you guessing until the end, and there's never a dull moment. Most of all, I admire Mr. Clark for breaking out of the box and writing a book that ignores convention and all the pc nonsense in the world. So the Times got it partly right. This is a great book, no doubt about it.

                      Book Description

Recent bombings of U.S. embassies in Africa remind us that U.S. citizens and U.S. interest are not immune to terrorism. Featuring the works of world-renowned experts, this book traces the recent evolution of international terrorism against civilian and U.S. military targets, looks ahead to where terrorism is going, and assesses how it might be contained.

                      4 out of 5 stars Interesting Pre 9-11 Book.......2003-04-01

This is a fairly recently produced document that could act as a primer for terrorists activities against the US. The books main thrust was how these new terrorist organization threaten the US Air Force and what the Air Force can do to protect itself. Do not worry about the book being to narrow, the authors take a much broader view at describing the terrorist threat and we are not bogged down by new and improved guard post theories. As the book was written before 9-11 there are some comments that are chilling when viewed with today's knowledge of recent history.

The book covers the basic organization structures of the terrorist organizations and how they operate. The book also gives a brief run down of who the current organizations that are active. It also talks about the trends in terrorism in both the type of groups and the type of attacks. The point the authors make is that there are fewer attacks, but they are increasing in their destructiveness. My only complaint was that the section talking about the organizational structures of the terrorist groups started to read like a management textbook, a little dry and dull. Overall the book is interesting with some very interesting comments viewed in a post 9-11 world. If you are looking for a quick brief of terrorists then this is a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars I cannot recommend this book enough!.......2001-09-21

This book is the result of a RAND Corporation study, undertaken for the United States Air Force, looking into the modern incarnations of terrorism, and its threat to the Air Force. However, this book goes far beyond its original purview. This book takes an in-depth look at the "new" terrorism, which is non-hierarchical and often non-ideological, but which is infinitely more prone to deadly violence and the use of weapons of mass destruction.

This book begins with an examination of the "new" terrorism, referencing such diverse terrorist groups as Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda, Aum Shinrikyo in Japan, American Militias, and narco-terrorist organizations. The final chapter covers how to counter the new terrorism.

This book, written in 1999, seems nothing short of prescient! On page 88 it says, "Until recent years, however, few of these [terrorist] attacks took place within the United States, partly because traditional terrorist groups found the prospect of operations in the United States too difficult, politically counterproductive, or simply unnecessary. Most observers now believe the threshold for significant international terrorism in the United States has been crossed..."

If you are interested in understanding the new terrorism and the steps that need to be taken to counter it, or if you wish to understand the plans that are possibly being constructed by the United States government, then I cannot recommend this book enough. It gives the reader an excellent grasp of how new terrorist organizations are organized, how they work, how to fight them, and where future threats are likely to come from.

                      Buy this book!

                      5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2000-06-12

This book is excellent. It covers many topics, mainly related to Air Force Security, and makes each of them readable and interesting. I learned alot about where terrorists are coming from and some of the things the Air Force is doing to counter them.

                          Book Description

Employing a theology by immersion, Barbara Fiand shows how our search for ourselves can and should lead us to God, and how our search for God will be rooted in our own deeply personal experience, revealing the ways in which faith development and human development can and do mutually enrich each other.

1 out of 5 stars A rhythmic series of movements spiraling inward.......2001-12-29

In "Embraced By Compassion" Sr. Barbara Fiand denigrates orthodox Catholic theology as obsessed with statements of the Creed (e.g., "I believe in God, the Father Almighty"), and proposes to replace this "misguided" and "boring" conceptual framework with one based on psychological conjecture.

Fiand proposes instead searching for a "dancing God" who can be found only by "immersing oneself in one's own inner core through a rhythmic series of movements spiraling inward." According to Fiand, when one "marinates in the enigma of one's inner core," something like a primitive awareness of God can emerge." The result is what she calls a mystical sense of at-oneness withthe cosmos."

She also regards the Church's seven sacraments as superfluous because she believes salvation is attainable within oneself. "To be changed," she writes, "I need to see the self that I hate as other, as a man abandoned on the cross. That is my sacrament. That is my baptism. That is my bread and wine. That is my love."

These sorts of assertions are a preview of the spirituality she proposes.

                              Book Description

The Potential of U.S. Grazing Lands to Sequester Carbon and Mitigate the Greenhouse Effect describes grazing lands, the areas they occupy, and their role in improving the environment. The book gives professionals and students insight into the two crucial issues: shaping policy and targeting research. The reader gets visual and graphic descriptions from the 98 figures included as well as east access to data from the 55 tables. It explores the extent grazing lands should be considered as potential carbon sinks, compares practices that result in soil carbon sequestration, and summarizes approaches for policy makers and research agencies.
