Book Description
The only complete guide to all aspects and uses of simulation-from the international leaders in the field
There has never been a single definitive source of key information on all facets of discrete-event simulation and its applications to major industries. The Handbook of Simulation brings together the contributions of leading academics, practitioners, and software developers to offer authoritative coverage of the principles, techniques, and uses of discrete-event simulation.
Comprehensive in scope and thorough in approach, the Handbook is the one reference on discrete-event simulation that every industrial engineer, management scientist, computer scientist, operations manager, or operations researcher involved in problem-solving should own, with an in-depth examination of:
* Simulation methodology, from experimental design to data analysis and more
* Recent advances, such as object-oriented simulation, on-line simulation, and parallel and distributed simulation
* Applications across a full range of manufacturing and service industries
* Guidelines for successful simulations and sound simulation project management
* Simulation software and simulation industry vendors
Customer Reviews:
Is a excelent book..........2001-05-01
The book is excelent. The tips and event simulations projects are useful (if you are in simulation and research operation market). I have four stars for this book because all the models are event oriented...
Don't buy if you need study dynamic models in diferential equations.
Better for grad or high-level, good for novice as well.......2001-03-27
Many discrete-event simulation books make this book unique. Banks didn't focus particularily on some packages, but the foundation of discrete-event simulation. I think this book intended to people who has some simulation background. It's also a good reference for researchers or grad students as well as practitioners since many literature and simulation vendors are listed. For no-simulation-background reader, this book may be a good starting point -as the first book for simulation. However, you may need other related books if you want to learn some packages. Not a bad book at all, very recommend.
Good publication for the current practicing engineer........1999-03-16
If you have a good background in calculus based statistics, this is a good reference book. The author has pulled together great historical statistical testing and design info and integrates it with recent research. A good deal of the work comes out of research recently presented at the Winter Simulation Conference series. Each chapter has ample bibliographic information for further reading.

Rhetoric and the Rule of Law: A Theory of Legal Reasoning (Law, State, and Practical Reason)
ASIN: 0198260253 |
Book Description
Explaining and Understanding Adjudication is the first book that attempts to analyse and define the methodology and values of contemporary accounts of adjudication, which can be divided into orthodox philosophies on the one hand and heretical accounts on the other. The author offers an incisive and original analysis of how these supposedly incompatible accounts actually differ. Through an evaluation of Neil MacCormick, Joseph Raz and Ronald Dworkin as the principal exponents of the orthodoxy and Duncan Kennedy and Roberto Unger providing the heretical accounts, William Lucy argues that there are few important differences between the two. Rather, the author concludes, both theories have acute problems in relation to the methodology and values they apply in interpreting adjudication.

Book Description
This volume discusses the possible improvement of forage production for livestock in areas with limited irrigation water and, sometimes, land. It is written in two parts; the first provides some basic elements of forest yield formation; the second gives details of five crops plus pastures selected because of their wide distribution or recommendations for use. The book mainly deals with crop agronomy, such as soil management, crop selection, input scheduling, and forage quality; as well as examining the physical processes, such as climate factors, crop-water functions, low water quality, and irrigation methods.
Serving as a useful reference book, this volume will be of great value to research workers, farmers, teachers, extension and advisory agents and senior students of agriculture and animal science.

Book Description
Covering colloids, polymers, surfactant phases, emulsions, and granular media, Soft and Fragile Matter: Nonequilibrium Dynamics, Metastability and Flow (PBK) provides self-contained and pedagogical coverage of the rapidly advancing field of systems driven out of equilibrium, with a strong emphasis on unifying conceptual principles rather than material-specific details. Written by internationally recognized experts, the book contains introductions at the level of a graduate course in soft condensed matter and statistical physics to the following areas: experimental techniques, polymers, rheology, colloids, computer simulation, surfactants, phase separation kinetics, driven systems, structural glasses, slow dynamics, and granular materials. These topics lead to a range of exciting applications at the forefront of current research, including microplasticity of emulsions, sequence design of copolymers, branched polymer dynamics, nucleation kinetics in colloids, multiscale modeling, flow-induced surfactant textures, fluid demixing under shear, two-time correlation functions, chaotic sedimentation dynamics, and sound propagation in powders. Balancing theory, simulation, and experiment, this broadly-based, pedagogical account of a rapidly developing field is an excellent compendium for graduate students and researchers in condensed matter physics, materials science, and physical chemistry.
Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive, upto date essays on soft matter by experts.......2007-08-16
Soft and Fragile Matter is a great compilation of essays, put together by editors Cates and Evans, into a book that is useful for every serious student of soft matter physics. The bibliography at the end of each chapter outlines essential reading for the corresponding branch of soft matter, and the text on each chapter provides a basic and yet erudite discussion on some of the essential features of colloids, polymers, surfactants, granular matter and glasses. Surprisingly the book does not include a chapter on liquid crystals.
A summary of what these essays contain:
Poon opens the book with "A day in the life of a hard-sphere suspension" outlining concepts of statistical mechanics and "dynamics, metastability and flow" required to appreciate their behavior.
David Pine introduces static and dynamic light scattering as well as basic rheology in context of behavior of glass forming gels and worm like miscelles as examples.
Alexei Khokhlov's chapter on polymer physics starts by discussing models for describing chain dimensions, follows up with swelling and collapse of polymer chains in solvents, and then discusses statics of polyelectrolytes and block polymers. Khokhlov is author of Statistical Physics of Macromolecules and Gaint Molecules: both of which are highly recommended texts for polymer physicists.
McLeish starts by explaining what rheology is, and how fluids and solids respond to stress. Then he talks about the theoretical aspects of Rouse model and reptation, and discusses experimental rheology of both linear and branched polymers.
Daan Frenkel's chapter on introduction to colloidal systems is a thirty piece masterpiece that presents most of the important concepts of colloidal phenomenon. The chapter starts by discussing why particles are brownian, talks about forces between particles and then talks about computer simulations of colloids. Phase behavior, metastability and crystallization as well as hydrodynamics of colloids are introduced to the reader.
Kurt Kremer summarizes the simulation strategies relevant to soft matter, presenting a brief on Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics. His book on the topic is must have, must read for simulators in the field.
Roux delves into the intricate phases and patterns formed by surfactants , both under static and dynamic conditions. Bray continues the discussion by providing insight into the coarsening dynamics, giving us a glimpse of mechanism and kinetics of transformation of one phase into another (disorder to order, and spinodal decomposition). Mukamel then tackles the phase behavior in nonequilibrium systems, an area which will see a lot of theoretical and experimental investigation in future.Symmetry breaking and collective phenomenon are becoming most investigated fields of study, and the mathematics involved is basis for understanding pattern formation and behavior across disciplines as diverse as population ecology, astronomy and oscillatory chemical reactions.
Kob takes us into the metastable, amorphous realm of supercooled liquids and glasses. He discusses strong and fragile glasses, Mode Coupling Theory as well as relaxation in supercooled systems. Bouchaud takes this discussion further by talking about aging in glassy systems.
Lekkerkerker takes off from where Frenkel left and talks about colloids in another very insightful chapter, where both hard sphere crystallization and impact of mixing on phase behavior of colloids blended with each other or polymers is discussed. Paul Chaikin discusses hydrodynamics and thermodynamics of hard spheres presenting important concepts regarding sedimentation and packing problem in solid spheres. His book with Lubensky is an erudite and mathematically intensive treatise on soft condensed matter.
Lastly, Nagel and Cates discuss the physics of granular materials, one of the least understood realm of soft matter. While Nagel describes experiments with little perturbation aimed at looking at statics of these materials, Cates summarizes the understanding of jamming and stress transmission in granular media.
With such richness and complexity of topics, this book deserves to be on the bookshelf of every soft matter enthusiast.

Riveting!.......2006-12-05
I planned to read a chapter a day when I began this book. Well, throw that out the window -- it's not possible to put this book down. The story is compelling, humorous, and true to life. The characters are so real, I found myself casting stars to play each one when the movie comes out! I cannot wait for V.W. Williams' next book!
A must read.......2006-08-31
Shadows Of Trickle Creek is an excellent book with captivating characters and a plot that grabs you and won't let go. A true must read.
Great Read!.......2006-06-12
This story pulled me in from the first paragraph. Great writing and descriptions make the characters come alive. Leavened by humor, the tension builds to a satisfying climax. I'm living in Texas and have lived in a small town and she nailed both, with kindness and humor. I hope this talented author keeps writing.
Thrilling Mystery set in East Texas .......2006-05-12
Shadows of Trickle Creek is Vickie Williams' stunning debut novel. Set in the Big Thicket of East Texas, the book is filled with details and skillfully written descriptions that showcase the beauty of the area and the author's love of Texas. The plot is intricate and fast paced and the characters are strong and yet very human. V.W. Williams is a new writer to watch out for and I'm eagerly awaiting her next release.
Keep up the excellent work!
Diana Driver
Personality-driven mystery-drama.......2006-05-12
Involving you immediately in its characters but slowly unpeeling their depth, this novel drives toward the gradual explication of a sinister plot in a small Texas town, but its real appeal is the grasping of different believable but iconic characters for self-respect. Not unlike Texas itself, it is vast and complicated but boils down to a few simple truths. Its two most enigmatic characters are an honest cop fleeing the chaos of his past, and a hard-working country woman attempting to discover hers, but they are complemented by insightful beef-jerky-tough older ladies and a town full of familiar personalities. As our publishing industry spirals into the increasing irrelevance of niche publishing and empty drama, it is refreshing to find an independent author with this much tenacity toward storytelling in its most vivid form.
Book Description
Unlike their sometime rivals the Templars, the Order of St John of the Hospital of Jerusalem (or the Hospitallers as they are better known) was not created as a result of the First Crusade in 1099: rather, it was probably established by a group of Italian merchants from Amalfi in the mid-11th century. However, as a consequence of the crusading movement, the Hospitallers became recognised experts in the military capabilities of opposing Islamic armies. This book, the first of two to examine the lifestyle, experiences and military role of the Hospitaller knight, covers the period from the foundation of the order to the invasion of Rhodes in 1306.
Customer Reviews:
Dude with too much time.......2003-05-26
A great buy for people trying to understand the fighting order of the Hospitaller. It details the castles they possessed during the crusades and their battles against the islamic knigdoms. The book itself starts with the foundation of the order in 1080 and then goes on to explain their tactics and strategies in holding on to their claims in Jerusalem. In the begining of the book is a detailed layout of the timeline of the order and like all other osprey books it contains 10 well drawn and fully colored pages of the equipment and dress of the Knights.
This is a great book for artist's trying to draw these knights and for historians who want to find out more about the the Order of the Hospital of St.John or simply put the Hospitallers, and the artist herself should get a reward for the stunning accuricy and talent put in the pictures.
Book Description
This short study of the history of the Order of St John of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta, also known as the Knights Hospitaller, is intended as an introduction to the Order for academics working in other fields, as well as the interested general reader. Beginning with a consideration of the origins of the Order as a hospice for pilgrims in Jerusalem in the eleventh century, it traces the Hospitaller's development into a military order during the first part of the twelfth century, and its military activities on the frontiers of Christendom in the eastern Mediterranean, Spain and eastern Europe during the middle ages and into early modern period: its role in crusades and in wars against non-Christians on land and at sea, as well as its role in building and maintaining fortresses. It also considers the Order's activities away from the frontiers of Christendom: its economic activities and its relations with patrons and rulers throughout Europe, as well as its hospitaller work and its religious life. The focus of the study is on the medieval period down to the loss of Rhodes in 1522, but the final chapters of the book consider the Order's history on Malta from the sixteenth to the end of the eighteenth century, and from the loss of Malta in 1798 to the present day. HELEN NICHOLSON is Senior Lecturer in History, Cardiff University.

The Knights Hospitaller - Chivalry at its Best.......2005-01-23
Nicholson, Helen. The Knights Hospitaller. (Woodbridge, UK: The Boydell Press, 2001).
Helen Nicholson is one of the leading scholars of medieval military religious orders. Her books are well known for providing new theories and insight into the history of the military orders, and The Knights Hospitaller is no exception. Though the nature of Dr. Nicholson's work is academic, and one that no scholar of the military orders should be without, her writing is uncluttered by jargon and un-translated items, making it accessible to all.
The Knights Hospitaller covers the history of the Order from its inception to the loss of Malta in 1798 and beyond to the standing of the Order in the present day. Dr. Nicholson does not look at this history in isolation, but rather sets the context for the Order's working by detailing pertinent events and mindsets over the course of the five hundred years of history the book covers. However, in doing so, the work raises some questions that are not answered by Dr. Nicholson. For instance, in discussing the Order's misty founding, Dr. Nicholson dismisses the claim made by William of Tyre that the Order was originally dedicated to St. John the Almoner, without really saying why or drawing any conclusions as to why William would have made this up. Though Dr. Nicholson seems to favor an Amalfian origin to the Order, there is no reason given not to believe that the Order was, at some point in its early days, dedicated to St. John the Almoner.
Despite a few missing answers, which may have been beyond the scope of the work, The Knights Hospitaller is an excellent introduction for anyone curious in learning more about medieval military orders. Dr. Nicholson has once again provided a book that is well worth the time taken to read it.

Production of Presence: What Meaning Cannot Convey
ASIN: 0674000560 |
Book Description
Travel back to the year 1926 and into the rush of experiences that made people feel they were living on the edge of time. Touch a world where speed seemed the very essence of life. It is a year for which we have no expectations. It was not 1066 or 1588 or 1945, yet it was the year A. A. Milne published Winnie-the-Pooh and Alfred Hitchcock released his first successful film, The Lodger. A set of modern masters was at work--Jorge Luis Borges, Babe Ruth, Leni Riefenstahl, Ernest Hemingway, Josephine Baker, Greta Garbo, Franz Kafka, Gertrude Stein, Martin Heidegger--while factory workers, secretaries, engineers, architects, and Argentine cattle-ranchers were performing their daily tasks.
Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht opens up the space-time continuum by exploring the realities of the day such as bars, boxing, movie palaces, elevators, automobiles, airplanes, hair gel, bullfighting, film stardom, dance crazes, and the surprise reappearance of King Tut after a three-thousand-year absence. From the vantage points of Berlin, Buenos Aires, and New York, Gumbrecht ranges widely through the worlds of Spain, Italy, France, and Latin America. The reader is allowed multiple itineraries, following various routes from one topic to another and ultimately becoming immersed in the activities, entertainments, and thought patterns of the citizens of 1926.
We learn what it is to be an "ugly American" in Paris by experiencing the first mass influx of American tourists into Europe. We visit assembly lines which turned men into machines. We relive a celebrated boxing match and see how Jack Dempsey was beaten yet walked away with the hearts of the fans. We hear the voice of Adolf Hitler condemning tight pants on young men. Gumbrecht conveys these fragments of history as a living network of new sensibilities, evoking in us the excitement of another era.
Book Description
i Scientific Realism /i is the optimistic view that modern science is on the right track: that the world really is the way our best scientific theories describe it to be. In his book, b Stathis Psillos /b gives us a detailed and comprehensive study, which restores the intuitive plausibility of scientific realism. We see that throughout the twentieth century, scientific realism has been challenged by philosophical positions from all angles: from reductive empiricism, to instrumentalism and modern skeptical empiricism. i Scientific Realism /i explains that the history of science does not undermine the notion of scientific realism, and instead makes it reasonable to accept scientific as the best philosophical account of science, its empirical success, its progress and its practice. Anyone wishing to gain a deeper understanding of the state of modern science and why scientific realism is plausible, should read this book.
Customer Reviews:
excellent introduction to the empiricism-realism debate.......2003-01-25
Psillos defends scientific realism along naturalistic lines against many positivist and post-positivist empiricist challenges, e.g as articulated by Duhem, Carnap, Laudan, Worrall, van Fraassen, and Fine. His command of empiricist philosophy is impressive (at least to me) and renders this book an excellent introduction to the current debate. Constructivism, however, is not treated here. The arguments are detailed and plausible and can be reconstructed by philosophically oriented scientists. The focus is on the physical sciences, and I wonder whether Psillos' conception of natural kinds would be all that successful in biological, historical, or social sciences. Nevertheless, the amount of synthesis of arguments in this book makes it a very valuable resource.

Book Description
* Official Handbook of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) - a major international agreement under continuous development
* Gives full details of the CBD and of the discussions and decisions of the Conference of the Parties to the CBD
* Essential resource for all those involved in the political process and with biological conservation issues
The threats to the world's biodiversity and the extinction of species are at unprecedented levels. In 1992, at the Earth Summit in Rio, the United Nations adopted the Convention on Biological Diversity to agree international measures aimed at preserving the vital ecosystems and biological resources on which we all depend. 168 countries have signed the Convention which came into force in 1993. The CBD process continues and in February 2000 governments agreed a groundbreaking Protocol on Biosafety, governing the development of trade in genetically modified organisms.
This Handbook presents all the most important information about the CBD, including a guide to the decisions adopted and to the ongoing activities of the Convention. It is an essential resource for all the governments, intergovernmental agencies, NGOs and conservation bodies and researchers working in this area.
