Book Description
Finallya thorough pedagogical survey of the multidisciplinary science of HCI.
Human-Computer Interaction spans many disciplines, from the social and behavioral sciences to information and computer technology. But of all the textbooks on HCI technology and applications, none has adequately addressed HCI's multidisciplinary foundationsuntil now.
HCI Models, Theories, and Frameworks fills a huge void in the education and training of advanced HCI students. Its authors comprise a veritable house of diamondsinternationally known HCI researchers, every one of whom has successfully applied a unique scientific method to solve practical problems.
Each chapter focuses on a different scientific analysis or approach, but all in an identical format, especially designed to facilitate comparison of the various models.
HCI Models, Theories, and Frameworks answers the question raised by the other HCI textbooks:
How can HCI theory can support practice in HCI?
* Traces HCI research from its origins
* Surveys 14 different successful research approaches in HCI
* Presents each approach in a common format to facilitate comparisons
* Web-enhanced with teaching tools at http://www.HCImodels.com
*Contributors are leading researchers in the field of Human-Comptuter Interaction
*Fills a major gap in current literature about the rich scientific foundations of HCI
*Provides a thorough pedogological survey of the science of HCI

Great concepts and models. Bad delivery........2006-01-16
I've been an information architect for most of my career but I only started teaching college students fairly recently. Now, there's a difference between training professionals (managers and executives) and students fresh out of high school. This book explains everything I need for my students to grasp the importance of human-computer interaction in their future careers. Unfortunately, it suffers from too much scientific jargon. I find myself constantly groping for ways to tone down words such as "one-key with disambiguation", replacing them with simpler terms such as "dictionary". Ironically, chapter 5 discusses the importance of simplifying your language in order to facilitate understanding between the designer (you) and the users (your customers). I guess, they're not really practicing what they preach. My students ask me if they could buy this book as their reference guide, but I shudder to think of the migraine they'd get from trying to wade through the jargons. They're future multimedia artists, not rocket scientists.
Scholarly, thorough, and very in-depth, but poorly edited .......2005-12-04
I have never encountered so many grammatical errors, mostly in the form of omitted auxiliary verbs and the like, as in this text. I also found certain chapters poorly written due to a paucity of examples provided for conceptual challenging material.
Otherwise, this is an excellent collection of chapters deeply rooted in the literature.
Constantly amazed at this book.......2003-11-06
Working through this book, I am constantly amazed at the number of topics covered and the depth and clarity of the authors (and in some cases, the entertaining story they tell). There is much important theory that exists in HCI and I have not found a book that does such a wonderful job bringing it, and the proper author to explain it, all together. Previously, it was a chore to track down the important theoretical works, not so now.
This book is NOT going to help you build better webpages or for that matter, teach you to build a better GUI. Do not expect it to as HCI is only marginally about this. HCI is more importantly about the work and activity people perform on a computer and through a computer with others. If you do not have this concept in mind, do not read this book as you will waste your time (and possibly write a bad review for it). If you are intrigued, read "The Design of Everyday Things" to give you the basic philosophy of HCI and this book to give you the theory of it.
Unfortunately, some chapters are not as strong as others and the binding of them all together is not as strong as it could be to give a complete picture of the field. That said, this is an important milestone for HCI and should be readable (and read) by all who have taken a basic HCI course.
Is this in english?!.......2003-10-14
It's a difficult book to read. It assumes you are at graduate or post-graduate level and already know a lot about the topic. I am working on my Master's in Interaction Design and I found myself being forced to re-read paragraphs because I had no idea what I just read! On the other hand, the book goes deep into HCI issues and methods and often leaves you with good research questions. If you're looking for a book to help you with real issues related to interface design or product usability, this isn't it. This book is all about theory. It's boring at best.
It all comes down to this: If you're all about theory, this book is for you. If you want to be able to apply what you read to real-world situations - get something else.

good companion.......2004-07-01
I liked this book a lot because it teaches this stuff through examples of when some seemingly abstract quantities are actually observables, but this approach is not always as lucid as a formal text because the general results need sometimes be distilled from the examples. I think it makes a great companion (esp. since it's not terribly expensive) to like a Fetter/Walecka or Abrikosov et al. or whatever more general text you like.
Good for a grasp of the essential physics........2002-11-17
When I was learning many body physics course one years ago, I found this book is very hopeful because it is clearly written and is focused on essential physics instead of rigorous mathematics.
Of cause Mahan¡¯s book is better for a big reference book. And Fetter¡¯s book is better if you want more mathematics.

Book Description
Megastar of stage, screen, and television, Geneva Jordan now has a command performance in Minnesota, where she agrees to look after her thirteen-year-old nephew, a boy with Down’s syndrome, while his parents take a long-overdue vacation. Though Geneva and her sister, Ann, are as different as night and day (“I being night, of course, dark and dramatic”), Geneva remembers she had a family before she had a star on her door. But so accustomed is she to playing the lead, finding herself a supporting actress in someone else’s life is strange and unexplored territory. Then the discovery of an old scrapbook that she and her sister created long ago starts her thinking of things beyond fame. For The Great Mysterious is a collection of thoughts and feelings dedicated to answering life’s big questions—far outside the spotlight’s glow. . . .
Customer Reviews:
A tear-jerker.......2007-09-30
I really enjoyed the story once I past chapter 4. Prior to that I didn't connect with Geneva, the main character who is a big-city Broadway star. She is the narrator, but the story had a certain something, so I continued reading on. It quickly took a turn for the better. The characters are heartwarming and believable even though the author used make-believe famous people and Broadway play titles and songs. I laughed, and shed many a tear, hardly able to put the book down.
Enjoyable.......2005-06-18
The books I like best are those that capture my attention within the first few pages and never loose it. This was one of those books. I immediately liked the character of Geneva. She is a Diva (which she admits), but also a warm, lovable person with a heart of gold.
The story itself could have been written like any other "chick-lit" book, but the uniqueness of Geneva and her successful Broadway career interspersed with the "Great Mysterious" really separated this book from those others. I enjoyed reading about Geneva taking care of Rich and connecting with him and the people in his life. The other characters were very well written, and yes, a little clichéd (philandering boyfriend/fiancé Trevor and too-good-to-be-true James, for example.)
If I have any criticism of the book, it was with Rich's dialog. Some of it did not seem like it would come from a 13 year old, let alone one with Downs Syndrome. But this is only a minor flaw in a truly enjoyable book. A four star recommendation for this one.
Another Great Book by Landvik-Love Her Writing! A+++!.......2005-05-30
I enjoyed yet another book by Lorna Landvik. This one was all about two sisters that were fraternal twins. Ann was the one who was always in her sister Geneva's shadow, as Geneva turned out to be the BIG STAR on broadway. Poor Ann, married, had a son with down-syndrome. When she and her husband needed a break for a vacation to Italy for a month, she asks Geneva to babysit with Rich. Of course, reluctantly Geneva agrees, and sets out from New York to Minnesota to watch over Rich while they're gone. It was a welcome change in a sense that Geneva had just been dumped yet again by her star boyfriend Trevor, also a big actor.
Of course, Rich took right to his Aunt Gennie very nicely. But Geneva, not being used to kids at all, especially special needs kids like Rich, it was very difficult at first until she learned his ways. Geneva becomes friends with Barbara, the next door neighbor who helps with Rich, as she has a disabled son, Conrad, herself. He has cerebal palsy and is a fragile kid. He and Rich have been the best of friends for years.
Geneva also meets James, the mailman, but also Barb's friend and he is divorced. He and Geneva strike it off right away, and seemingly fall in love. But Trevor, still wants Geneva back, and she isn't sure in this part of the book. The conclusion on this segment becomes clear at the ending.
The Great Mysterious though, was entitled that way because of the fact that Geneva and Ann made up a scrapbook many years, named that. It was named that because it had questions and answers to life's biggest questions, and was quite a unique record over the years as the kids in their family added to it, and adults tried to provide the answers. I thought this was a great part of the book, and it tied the story together when it came to life, love, and the pursuit of happiness.
Compelling.......2004-10-25
I became totally absorbed in the plot and characters of this book and finished it in one day. A beautifully written story.
Very uplifting.......2004-07-06
This was a sweet story of family love and close knit friendships. Lorna Landvik writes a story many of us can relate too. At first I wasn't sure how she was going to tie all the characters together, but she slowly develops the story never giving away the ending. I read it in two days and wished the epilogue was longer....

Detailed, thorough, and unconventional.......2007-09-26
Since 1983, when a range fire cleared away much of the grass and underbrush at the Custer Battlefield along the Little Big Horn in Montana, archaeologists have had a chance to investigate the field and, using the material evidence uncovered, have made their own contributions to the mountains of interpretations of what happened that fateful day, June 26, 1876, when Custer and his Seventh Regiment were wiped out. Richard Allan Fox was one of those original archaeologists, and this book is a careful and detailed study of his findings - and interpretations. (In terms of the historical record it is always wise to remember that no members of Custer's immediate command survived the fight and that Indian eyewitness accounts, often contradictory and self-serving, must be carefully scrutinized; many historians refuse to give any credence to them at all.)
Fox, basing many of his conclusions on archaeological evidence, particularly shell casings found on the field, offers accounts of what happened that differ from the standard view, mainly in the following areas: he believes Custer and his men maintained an offensive tactical mode almost up to the very end; he believes at least one company of Custer's men made a reconnaissance beyond Cemetery Ridge (where the Visitors Center is today) down to the river (most other historians think nothing of importance occurred in this sector); he believes that the Medicine Tail Coulee descent to the river was also a reconnaissance move and not an attack that was eventually foiled; and he believes the standard image of Custer and his men fighting in unison to the last man to the very end on Custer Hill did not occur: many soldiers by the end were running for their lives toward the Deep Ravine just south of Custer Hill. Fox offers other discrepancies - Crazy Horse did not make a sweeping attack from the north across Cemetery Hill but rather made a more direct assault across the river and up the Deep Ravine - all of which, of course, is conjecture.
In fact, all of what Fox postulates is within the realm of possibility (he certainly is not among the crazies who, for example, have Custer's men all committing suicide), and he makes a good case for everything he says. But no matter how credible Fox makes his case to be, it, like all other interpretations, must remain only speculative. No one will ever know for sure exactly what happened that hot afternoon, but Fox offers a thorough analysis, thoughtful and credible. I put the book near the top of the pile of those worth giving a second look at regarding the Custer fight.
I'll pile on too!.......2007-09-11
Let me pile on with most of the other reviewers. This is a fascinating read and unique insight into the Battle of the Little Big Horn.
The New History.......2007-08-02
This analysis of the Little Bighorn has/will set a new standard for historical writing. Unlike 90% of the historical liturature produced in the USA now days, this book is unfettered by PC bias. It is pure history amplified by first class archaeology. Whether you are a Custer buff or not, read it to find out how history should be written.
What Really Happened at Custer's Last Stand.......2006-06-26
This is an outstanding book and essential for anyone curious about the real story of Custer's Last Stand based on Archaeological digs made on the battle field which answers many questions as to what happened and what the evidence showed as compared to popular history. A real must have for anyone who wants to know the truth and understand what happened in this great American Battle. Well written and clear and concise.
The Custer Myth exploded...........2006-02-21
I first read this book when it was first published, and after two visits to the Battlefield. I have since visited the Field again and was suprised to see that the NPS has now adopted the Fox thesis as the probable flow of events. If one follows the self guided tour, one will see the events as laid out by this seminal work in the application of forensic science and archeology. I give a wink to the trial lawyer reviewer, who would undoubtably know plenty about misrepresenting data. As a scientist and data analyst, I think Fox drew conclusions well within the limits of his statistical analysis. For those who don't know statistics, or think they do, I will state this one statistical fact. Half of all Americans are below average in intelligence. Think about that if you think you know statistics. It is a simple and incontrovertable fact. Fox makes no outrageous claims, unless of course you are one who hoplessly clings to outdated notions spoon fed to you as a child, and watched too many matinee westerns. Having personally read the now discredited works of S.L.A. Marshal on how soldiers react in combat, I was disappointed to see Fox rely on some of his conclusions, he could have cited other more authoritative and less questioned works.
None the less, I see no problem with Fox interpreting his data in light of the only eye witness accounts. History is usually written by the victors. Why should we discount the Native American's version of events out of hand, especially when Fox's data can be seen to corroborate it? Subsequent digs on the battlefield have recoved a plethora of remains that if we are to believe the Army, should have been under the marker at the crest of the hill, not under or around the individual markers. The fact is that all the marker pairs examined really represent only one body and not two. So much for the noble bunkmates going down fighting together or engaging in a suicide pact as the myth would have you believe. Even contemporary accounts have officers bodies on Last Stand Hill with Custer, and not with the remains of their commands. This begs the question, what do soldiers do when they see their commanding officers run?
The myth that Custer's was the only body not mutilated on the field is another questionable page in the myth, and most think it was in deferrence to Libby Custer's sensibilities. Tom Custer was only identified by a distinctive tattoo. Custer had recently shorn his distinctive hair, and the indians did not know who they were fighting, and probably could have cared less.
I am amazed that anyone actually believed all the going down fighting myth making that typified the Little Big Horn. It tells me that they have read little other first hand historical accounts of men in battle. The situation on that hot lonely desolate hillside, commands spread out over almost a mile assailed by gunfire from all sides, horses rearing, friends and colleagues obscured by smoke and dust, thoughts of being alone and left behind running through each man's mind, would have un-nerved a veteran trooper, not to mention the tired raw immigrants that made up a large part of the command. I think the real image of an ambitious ill planned attack disintegrating into a panicked inglorious route, does more to illustrate the true character of the man in command than it does to cast a shadow on the bravery of the men who put misplaced trust in him.
The Custer Luck finally ran out.
