I am in broad agreement with the other reviewers, but i would like to add that this is the only place you can get the full backstory of the conflict, and that is a really good real and really helpful to get into the why of this conflict. Highly recomended.

The Homeworld 2 Strategy Guide has lots of info; LOTS. It starts out with a listing of some changes from Homeworld to its sequal. This was very helpful to me, being a Homeworld fan for a long time. It then goes on with the ship listing.
Yes, they stole some quotes from the ship listing in the manual... but they also included a comprehensive Pro-Con listing for each ship. They then went through with you some basic fleet control and strategy, which is very important considering Homeworld 2 is a very unique game, even from Homeworld. It discussed how ships relate with each other, work against each other, and what balance is required and how it can vary. The guide then went into specific strategies, not all military. While I don't use any of these directly in a game, I used the basis of one and evolved it so far that it eventually became an entirely different strategy... a very good one.
Then the singleplayer walkthrough. Boy was this GOOD! I recall while playing the game reports of bugs in the single player campaign, making it impossible to proceed and win until the patch. Well, not even knowing it, the guide bypassed the error and let me proceed to win! The guide not only reveals surprises, but hidden elements on the map that can give you am edge against your enemy.

however, once you read through the guide about 5 times, you memorize it all and it becomes useless, and you should sell it. Nevertheless it's a good thing to buy for a newbie, as they can learn important skills before they head into the real world of Homeworld 2.

Homeworld rocks, but the single player campaign can be pretty difficult, what with the reactive fleet and all. I read some strategy guides online, but this book had a rocking walkthrough for the campaign, as well as a ton of additional tips from the designers (who'd have thought of using scouts' EMP against the keepers?).
I don't know what axe our reviewer from Chicago has to grind, but Dan Irish was the producer of this title, so he would have had
extensive access to the game, and I think the content of this book shows. There are three chapters dedicated to the single player campaign walkthough - what more could you want?
This book gave me 2 positives: I enjoyed reading it - it's written in a very militaristic style, and the information it gave me helped me to improve my game in ways I would have never thought of.

The Homeworld2 strategy guide contains the critical hints and tips that are necessary to beat the game without loosing the element of surprise in exploring the rich single-player campaign.

Written by Dan Irish, the Executive Producer of Homeworld2, he lends a lot of in-depth strategies and a ton of backstory to an already rich universe.

Contrary to other reviews, many others on the relicnews.com forums and www.homeworld2.com have raved about the complexity of the game that is revealed in this book. No Homeworld fan should be without one.

An inacurate guide.......2003-10-06

Simply put, this book is a horrible excuse for a game guide. After reading the original Homeworld guide, one would expect better for a game much tougher than the original. The guide contains many exeprts straight from the game manual. The game guide does not give specific directions for the single player campaign (the main reason one buys a game guide), only broad strategies that any decent gamer could have come up with on their own. Some major game events listed in the guide do not even happen in the game! I am not sure if that is due to bugs or misleading writing but is obvious that the writers played very little (if any) of the game themselves and only wrote what they were told to by the project management. To be blunt, the guide is impersonal and flat out inacurate in its strategies for Homeworld 2. Very dissapointing.

In this second volume of the Proceedings of the Ixtapa Conference on Clifford Algebras and Their Applications to Mathematical Physics, the editors have collected papers which reflect the latest developments in Clifford Analysis. It is fair to say that the authors of the contributions are virtually all the important names in the field, and the picture that the volume presents of Clifford Analysis indicates the vitality of the topic. Maybe the most important thing in this volume (what I called the "new face" of Clifford Analysis) is the clear sense that Clifford Analysis is now used as a powerful tool to solve classical problems which the standards tools from the analysis in Euclidean spaces could not solve. This evolution from a discipline concerned with its own (quite interesting) internal problems, to a discipline capable of addressing outstanding issues in geometry and analysis is the product of the work of many of the contributors to these Proceedings. The volume is divided in four sections. The first deals with partial differential equations and boundary value problems. I particularly appreciated the survey work on the study of Beltrami type equations in three dimensions. The second section deals with Singular Integral Operators, the third offers some important Applications to Geometry and Physics, and the volume concludes with a section on Mobius Transformations and Monogenic Functions. I have found the papers of great interest because they not only address important and difficult problems, but also provide the reader with a wide variety of new issues to deal with. The majority of the papers is rather technical, and probably only accessible to the specialist, but a few of them (including the one on Beltrami equations I mentioned before) provide a sense of the state of the art, which is of great help to the analyst or the geometer who wishes to enter this beautiful branch of mathematics.

The aim of this book is to give a physical treatment of the kinetic theory of gases and magnetoplasmas, covering the standard material in as simple a way as possible, using mean-free-path arguments when possible and identifying problem areas where received theory has either failed or has fallen short of expectations. Examples are provided by strong shock waves, ultrasonic waves (high Knudsen numbers), and transport across strong magnetic fields. This omission usually has no adverse consequences, but with increasing Knudsen number, it leads to errors. This text pays particular attention to pressure, explaining the importance of allowing for its collisional nature from the outset in developing kinetic theory.

Best book of the year that nobody will ever hear about. Should be a mandatory read for guys flying home from thier Bachelor Parties. Funny how some people write down in publish what others just think about. I wonder if Oprah will have him on to discuss it with Jennifer Anniston?

Laugh out loud funny. Like any good conspiracy theory, some solid facts, well observed connections, and a lot of creative guess work makes this a perfect light summer read. As a stay at home dad, I alternated between cracking up at the depiction of how the mind of a married man works and sighing with resignation at the horrors of a life secretly out of my control. Sometimes I even "earned points" by sharing carefully selected parts with my go-to-work wife.

If every historian wrote like Bruce Catton, no one would read fiction. This marvelously well-told account of the final year of the Civil War marches readers from Wilderness, through Petersburg, and finally to the climax at Appomattox. The surrender scene, when Grant and Lee meet at last, is spine tingling. This is the third book of Catton's Army of the Potomac trilogy. It's also the best of the bunch, even though the first two, Mr. Lincoln's Army and Glory Road, are both exceptional. Not to be missed. --John Miller

Civil War Books.......2007-08-08

It is understandable why this book earned a Pulitzer for the author. Written in the early 1950's, it was the first time Civil War events were treated from a human versus fact-after-fact view. However, Shelby Foote later wrote a superior account that not only provides the human side, but also presents all the historical data.

One of the best on the Civil War.......2006-12-14

Part 3 of Bruce Catton's fantastic trilogy of the civil war is an interesting look at how the Army of the Potomac ended the war. From a discussion of a daring plan to plant dynamite underneath confederate lines to the chasing down of Lee's Army by Grant a true sense of what happened during the civil war can be gathered form this trilogy. An essential collection to any civil war historical library.

Another Masterpiece by Catton!.......2006-11-18

A Stillness at Appomattox is the last in the trilogy of the Army of the Potomac and covers from the period from late 1863/early 1864 (before the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Campaign) to April 1865 (Appomattox).

While the book is certainly heavily weighted in its coverage of the Union side, Catton is fair in his assessment of the various Union leaders. Of course, there is also the unique writing style that Catton possessed - a free flowing and smooth narrative rich with details.

My only complaint is the lack of maps. However, one must also bear in mind that the first edition was written in 1953, a time when books did not have the number of detailed maps that you would find in more recent titles.

Complaint aside, I highly recommend the book and series as the best coverage of the Union Army of the Potomac during the Civil War.

Superbly Moving Narrative.......2005-04-12

This superb narrative about the Union's Army of the Potomac in the war's final year captured the 1954 Pulitzer Prize. The book is one of several superbly readable volumes on the Civil War by author/historian Bruce Catton (1899-1978).

This narrative covers the Army of the Potomac from the start of the brutal 1864 wilderness campaign through the war's end a year later at Appomattox. The author shows that General Ulysses S. Grant was more capable than brilliant, and fiercely determined to keep the pressure on General Lee's rebel army until the Confederates had no choice but to quit. Given the Union's advantage in men and material, the strategy made sense. What was less sensible were costly errors by Union officers, frightful casualties, and a sickening Union failure to clinch victory on the first day at Petersburg (thus reducing carnage on both sides).

The author perused many soldier diaries and letters to show us the life of the average Union enlisted man. That soldier was well-paid ($16 a month), but forced to endure boredom, rough weather, marching, stress, and dangers from disease and a tough, determined enemy.

This moving look at the last year of conflict is probably the best of Catton's narratives on the Civil War.

A Masterpiece of Civil War History.......2004-12-14

It would be an almost impossible task for anyone to figure out just how many books have been written dealing with the American Civil War. It would also be difficult to determine which Civil War historians are most often cited by their peers but there is no doubt that Bruce Catton would be near or more likely at the top of any such list. The reason for this is quite simply that Catton was one of the great historical writers of all time. Very few people can take their readers into the heart of an army, both those of it's soldiers and leaders like Catton and even fewer convey their story in the very clear and easy to read style that this author has mastered. To read this book of pure history is in many ways like reading a historical novel and even the reader who already has a firm grasp on the historical facts of this story will sometimes find themselves wondering what happens next.

This is the story of the last campaign of the Army of the Potomac, that Ill-fated army that had so often been humiliated by Robert E. Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia. This campaign was to be different however because there was a new man calling the shots and having a man like U. S. Grant at the helm made all of the difference in the world. It took Grant a while though to convince this often badly led army that he was any different than his predecessors. Different he was however and once he locked horns with Lee he wasn't going to let up until one army or the other was destroyed. In other words Grant understood what had to be done and he was determined to do it.

Catton's main field of study was this man Grant but one of the author's most endearing qualities is that he makes no effort to whitewash or hide his subject's faults. Catton also does not attempt to build Grant up by tearing away at Lee like many of the more recent Grant biographers have done. He simply makes Grant's greatness apparent by telling the story the way it happened and it doesn't take long for the reader to figure out what an outstanding general Grant was.

The author has done a lot of searching through soldier's letters and memoirs as well as regimental histories and this leads to a very personal perspective of the last year of the war. The stories he has gleaned from these sources are poignant, somber, gleeful and funny. For example, one entire brigade falls out of the final advance upon Lee's army to chase down and cook some chickens that have been scattered by artillery fire. I think it was Napoleon who said something about an army traveling on it's stomach.

I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the Civil War. The hard core Civil War reader will find new information here and the casual reader will find that this book is fun to read and no one should have a problem following the story. If Amazon allowed six stars this is one of the few books that would qualify.
