2 out of 5 stars Blah, more of a teaser than a guide........2002-12-08

This Guide is about all it does. Get's you through the basics. To bad they didn't let VersusBooks do this one. Their treatment of Baldur's Gate II & the Expansion was perfect (except for the printing errors, which they graciously correctly and provide a replacement at no charge for those of us with an early edition) All the really good stuff you buy a guide for is completely left out (What the loot is where to get it) and although you don't always want to use them. The inclusion of the cheats codes is a nice bonus VersusBooks gives us for BG:II but prima LEAVES OUT for ID:II. But since this is all there is I guess you have to buy it. I hope Bioware and BlackIsle will use Versus in the future as prima's guides are weak.

3 out of 5 stars Good Walkthrough, but that's all.......2002-09-15

The consists mainly of a walkthrough. The do have maps and nice little helpful hint boxes. That portion of the book is done well and I have no complaints there, but what I can't understand is not having a list of items or breaking down the spells by class and by level (something sorely needed in the manual). If you just want a walkthrough, then this guide will serve, but if you want a complete guide, you will be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Prima's guide is nice, but not thorough........2002-08-31

Prima is usually the standard when it comes to strategy guides. They are pretty reknown for their in-depth walkthroughs and attention to detail, but with Icewind Dale 2, they fell somewhat short of my expectations.

The guide has the "essential" information; they detail the new 3rd Edition D&D rules, providing a small glossary of 3E terms (Hit points, Armor Class, etc.) lists the new skills, feats and races, including all the benefits and disadvantages of each. The Character descriptions are nicely detailed, describing their individual abilities and disadvantages and their roles and recommended positions in combat. A monster list is available with a description of each, and they give an outline of the spells with their respective icons in the game. Additional spell lists are found in the appendix, listing individual class spells separately. Prima also gives a "few guidelines" for building your own party. Helpful notes and tips appear in rounded boxes throughout the book which give necessary information that you might not spot immediately in the book text, and it provides a decent walkthrough. The maps of the areas are impressively crisp and clear versus previous Prima strategy guides; you won't have to squint to see them. For black and white reproductions, most are surprisingly easy on the eyes.

Unfortunately, the book is not quite thorough. Are they going to produce another Icewind Dale 2 guide with complete information and charge everyone for it a second time? You will find a list of BASIC weapon stats and BASIC Armor and Shield "Data" all on one page, but a COMPLETE list of items, magic or otherwise is absent. In addition, the guide states that all major/minor quests are detailed but not every "experience point opportunity". This may have been implemented for those who wanted to find everything on their own. I would have loved the guide to list a few sample parties; that's the first place I turn to. Veteran gamers like me may not need that info but it's a must have for people new to the game. If you are expecting this book to have everything, you will be disappointed. Prima did do an okay job on this book, but I expected better from them; if they are the only company producing an IWD2 strategy guide, fans looking for additional info will have to look elsewhere.

    Book Description

After the 1995 peace agreement for Bosnia and Herzegovina, the World Bank played a leading role in the international effort to support post-conflict reconstruction. During the period 1996¨C2003, the Bank committed millions of dollars to rebuilding infrastructure and, in addition, supported the transformation from socialism to a market economy.

Bosnia and Herzegovina assesses the Bank¡¯s assistance to Bosnia and Herzegovina during reconstruction (1996-2003), in terms of its objectives, scope, and outcomes. The authors contend that the reconstruction effort was highly successful with improved access to schools and health clinics; financial sector reforms were implemented and micro-finance was very successful; and economic management has improved, although tax evasion and corruption remain serious problems. Yet despite these many successful outcomes, results have been less satisfactory in private sector development and Bank support to privatization has not turned out well.

The authors argue that, going forward, the Bank should concentrate on public sector management and private sector development issues, including a better approach to privatization: more attention to hard budget constraints on State-owned enterprises (SOEs) and to finalizing an acceptable bankruptcy law, reforming commercial courts, resolving the ownership and debt status of strategic enterprises, and helping to strengthen the role of the privatization agencies. The prospect of entering into a Stabilization and Association Pact with the EU, and possible future EU membership, provide strong incentives for the country to implement reforms which have stalled in the past.

      Book Description

Privatization has caused a large reconfiguration of the relations between the state, the market, and the family in the late twentieth and the early twenty-first centuries, all of which has had a profound effect on the lives of women. This collection of essays address this timely issue by examining eight case studies on the role of law in various arenas such as fiscal and labour market policy, family and immigration law, and laws designed to regulate health services and to prohibit child prostitution.

Starting from the shared assumption that privatization signals a transition from welfare state to neo-liberal state, the authors illustrate the role of law in this process, and its impact on women and on the gender order. In doing so, the contributors lay bare the complex interplay between a globalized political economy, social reproduction and legal regulation, providing an important contribution to feminist political theory and legal theory. Of great relevance to political science and law practitioners scholars and students - especially those interested in the areas of public policy and the state - these essays contribute strongly to debates about gender and will attract a wide feminist audience.

                  Book Description

In the eighties, a group of theoretical physicists introduced several models for certain disordered systems, called "spin glasses". These models are simple and rather canonical random structures, that physicists studied by non-rigorous methods. They predicted spectacular behaviors, previously unknown in probability theory. They believe these behaviors occur in many models of considerable interest for several branches of science (statistical physics, neural networks and computer science).

This book introduces in a rigorous manner this exciting new area to the mathematically minded reader. It requires no knowledge whatsoever of any physics, and contains proofs in complete detail of much of what is rigorously known on spin glasses at the time of writing.

3 out of 5 stars very good but..........2003-07-07

the book is great, very well written. and many people were waiting for the first
rigorous text providing the reader with a global view of the subject.
there's just a problem of bad timing: due to the fast rate at which radically new results appeared recently and will keep appearing in the next several months, the book is already old before hitting the market.

                    Book Description

In this first novel from award-winning writer Sara Rath, the forests and lakes of northern Wisconsin pose a daunting threat to outsider Hannah Swann, who is content with her quiet life in Madison, Wisconsin, where she teaches and writes screenplays about obscure nineteenth-century poets. Her relationship with her college-aged daughter is strained yet candid, and a long-standing affair with a married professor has its own peculiar ups and downs.
When Hannah unexpectedly inherits her uncle's rundown resort, she must head to the northwoods to close up and sell the business. But the only interested buyer is Ingold, an international mining company, and Hannah finds herself reluctantly operating the resort while trapped in the midst of a treacherous dispute between Ingold and Uncle Hal's activist friends.
From safeguarding the wilderness to pursuing elusive new love interests, Hannah has plenty to engage her imagination at Star Lake. A new aspect of her personality emerges, one that is surprisingly courageous and compassionate. Throughout this humorous, elegantly plotted adventure with its appealing characters and lyrical depictions of nature, Hannah encounters the inevitability of change—in herself and in the nostalgic landscape of the deep North.

                    4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Read.......2006-11-05

I totally enjoyed this book. It probably meant more to me because I have a Madison and Northern Lake home. I could relate to the cultures of both areas as expressed by the author. I became aware of this book when driving my car from my cabin to Madison and it was being read on Public Radio on Chapter A Day. I couldn't wait to get home and order it.

                    5 out of 5 stars Captures Wisconsin.......2006-08-08

As a native of Wisconsin who loves the north woods and Madison alike, I enjoyed this book. I think it is always enjoyable to read a fictional story set in a place you are familiar with. Sara Rath did a good job capturing life in Wisconsin, complete with the ever-present mining controversies we have. I also enjoyed the language her northwoods characters use-not too far off the mark!

The story itself transports Hannah Swan, a filmmaker from Madison, into Antler, WI when her long-lost uncle dies and leaves her a Housekeeping Resort. Hannah begins a journey with her inheritence from denial to acceptance of the property, the community, and the people she gets to know.

The story isn't deep, but it is heartwarming. I would say that some of the sex scenes are gratuitous and unnecessary, but other than that, I enjoyed this novel.

4 out of 5 stars A Taste of the Northwoods.......2006-08-02

Star Lake Saloon and Housekeeping Cottages appealed to me for many reasons, not the least is that I happen to be the owner of a Northwoods Housekeeping resort and could relate to the main character, Hannah, on several levels. I enjoyed reading Sara Rath's descriptions of Star Lake, the broken down lodge and cabins, the look of the lake, the smell of the pines. She captures the essence of Northern Wisconsin beautifully. What troubled me about this story, however, is that I never felt a strong sense of empathy for the main character, Hannah Swann. To me, she wants to be a confident take-charge woman, spokesperson for an important cause, but nearly everything she does, she does reluctantly. It was hard to get behind her and cheer her on.

Hannah is a poetry instructor from Madison, Wisconsin, who also writes documentary films. Apparently educated and sophisticated, she is nevertheless having an odd affair with a married man, a "malacologist," which, I learned, is someone involved in the "scientific study of mollusks." His name is Tyler and while his occupation ultimately plays a role in the story, what stands out is his awkward sexual dysfunction, and a couple of sex scenes that almost made me throw the book aside. Most of the other secondary characters are flat and predictable. They include Hannah's daughter, Chloe, a vegetarian with a pierced nose, who is a political activist, and her trusty, but never fleshed-out boyfriend, Eric. Dan Kerry, Hannah's rugged, fishing guide/flannel shirt wearing love interest, and a sleazy lawyer, the villain named Denny. Hannah's mother, Lily, is nosy, self-centered and highly critical of her daughter. On the other hand, the one character who does stand out is the feisty Ginger, saloon barkeep, who is a tell-it-like-it is kind of gal, who not only puts Hannah in her place, but offers a true and entertaining Northwoods vernacular. Whenever Ginger is in the room, it's a guaranteed entertaining read.

There is little mystery involved with the plot of the underhanded mining company supporters trying to take over her newly inherited land and much of what happens is highly predictable and contrived. It's a quick read, the writing is average and I recommend this book to readers who want to get a taste of the great Northwoods. Three and a half stars.

Star Lake Saloon is a what my father used to call, "A sleep robber." The author snares you so completely into the life of hcr characters and their dilemma of stopping a mining conglomerate from spoiling the sleepy paradise of a resort in Nothern Wisconsin, that you have to read "just one more chapter" to see what's going to happen. It's a bit like trying to eat one
                    potato chip.

For those who have grown up with memories of summer sojourns in resorts like Star Lake Saloon it must be nostalgic to read this book. For those of us who were not fortunate enough to have that experience, Star Lake Saloon and Housekeeping Cottages make us feel as if we have.

The novel is complete with sex, romance, mystery and history woven into a tight structure, as well as a very bequiling dog.

                    4 out of 5 stars Northwoods Confidential.......2006-02-08

The characters are well done, the pace and lifestyle well-represented, and the struggle of historic and environmental preservation versus corporate "progress" well portrayed in this book about Madisonite Hannah Swann's reluctant transplantation to the Northwoods. This is a genre spanning tale of mystery, ecological impact, coming of (change-of-life) age, and reluctant romance. It is marred by gratuitous sex, seemingly stuck in there just to "pidgeonhole" it into a market in which it didn't need to strive to fit. /TundraVision, Amazon Reviewer

                      Book Description

In 1991, an ethnically diverse region that had enjoyed decades of peaceful coexistence descended into bitter hatred and chaos, almost overnight. Communities fractured along lines of ethnic and religious affiliation and the ensuing fighting was deeply personal, resulting in brutality, rape and torture, and ultimately the deaths of thousands of people. This book examines the internal upheavals of the former Yugoslavia and their international implications, including the failure of the Vance-Owen plan; the first use of NATO in a combat role and in peace enforcement; and the war in Kosovo, unsanctioned by the UN but prosecuted by NATO forces to prevent the ethnic cleansing of the region.

3 out of 5 stars Well balenced view of Tesla's wireless power........1999-01-06

While Peat does an excellent job at reporting of broadcast power from a critical standpoint, some very speculative statements are made about Tesla himself (e.g. He completely suppressed his own emotions in an attempt to use reasoning only) I had some objections to the reliability of part of the information presented. Peat offers alot of good information and the book is worth reading if your interested in Tesla and his works, particularly broadcast power.

5 out of 5 stars Scientific anaylsis of Tesla's theories.......1998-09-25

Dr. Peat gives a scientific perspective to Tesla's work, specifically, the wireless power transmission theories. The book is very narritive in his search for the truth about Tesla. His endeavors of searching for info are quite interesting. I recommend the book to any scientist out there. The book was originally published in 1983.
