5 out of 5 stars It actually makes you think and learn.......2005-12-08

This book is great. Maya is a beast of a program and just following instructions in a book will guide and teach you but it takes actual practice and thinking on your own to really learn and understand. That is exactly what this book does. It explains what is going on and then it is left up to you to finish with its guidance. There is no better way to learn. Frustrating at times but so worth it in the end.

3 out of 5 stars Don't read the chapter on Inverse Kinetics.......2004-07-13

While I found everything in the book to be general okay in terms of the intruction, the chapter on Inverse Kinetics should be avoided AT ALL COST!! Go take a class on that or something but do not try to do the inverse kinetics tutorial and save your self from hours of frustration and anger. Trust me on this, the instructions in the book on inverse kinetics DO NOT give the results that are described and you will be scratching you head until it becomes bald and staring at the screen until your eyes go blind.

1 out of 5 stars Very confusing book that should have been more thorough.......2004-07-13

There are many basic topics such as nurbs stitching that are not taught in this book. Worse of all, some times the instructions not even complete so you have to guess at random as to what you need to do to make the scene work.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for young people interested in 3D Model.&anim. !.......2004-06-28

I am 14 years old and I have always been interested in Computer Graphics and especially Maya. I only had a vague idea of managing this program, modeling, animating,... and this was just the book I needed!

2 out of 5 stars This books has holes........2004-06-24

I have been a Graphic Designer for several years and have become very efficient at teaching myself new programs with well written books. Unfortunately, I have found this book to be a bit confusing. It seem as though topics are covered with small bits of pertinent information missing. I had to use the Quick Start guide to fill in the holes of this book so I could continue to use it. Maybe this book should be reworked then re-released. I think it has the beginnings of a good starter book but for now its a struggle.

                Book Description

This book concerns the most important relationship most people have outside the family: the relationship between an employer and an employee. That relationship is crisscrossed by a complex web of laws and regulations. This book describes those laws in a direct, straightforward fashion.

The Michigan Employer's Guide provides the "lay of the land" of personnel law and regulations and integrates the state and federal law that is relevant to an employer. Each section of the book attempts to include both the underlying concept and a simple, straightforward rule.

This book is written in small, self-contained sections. The reader does not need to refer to the rest of the chapter, much less the rest of the book, to find information about a topic. Although this method of writing causes some duplication, it more than repays the reader in the efficiency of its use.

The Michigan Employer's Guide is supplemented at least yearly, and more often if major legislation or court cases require. In order to incorporate updated pages easily, the book is published in a three-ring notebook. The Michigan Employer's Guide is, and will continue to be, one of the most current employment law books available anywhere in the nation.

"Memo English" is used throughout this book. Whenever possible, the author has avoided terms not found regularly in a newspaper and discussions that would appear out-of-place in a business memo. This book is a non-technical discussion of technical topics.

                              Book Description

Co-published with Oxford University Press. A handy reference for engineers and physicists, this IEEE reprinting of the classic text provides a deep, fundamental understanding of electromagnetics. Providing a pertinent historical overview for each chapter, it shows how special relativity is used to develop a complete electromagnetic theory from Coulomb's Law, with the need relativity theory developed in an early chapter. Electromagnetics also contains many applications for the chapters covering electrostatics, magnetostatics, electrodynamics, while the final three chapters of the book extend the electromagnetic theory to dielectric magnetic and conducting materials.

This is a very cute story of a boy searching for his shoe. It is so much fun that kids wont even realize they might be learning something. This book finds a creative way to help kids get the concepts of who, what, when and where.

                                  Book Description

As the United States gained independence, a full fifth of the country's population was African American. The experiences of these men and women have been largely ignored in the accounts of the colonies' glorious quest for freedom. In this compact volume, Gary B. Nash reorients our understanding of early America, and reveals the perilous choices of the founding fathers that shaped the nation's future.

Nash tells of revolutionary fervor arousing a struggle for freedom that spiraled into the largest slave rebellion in American history, as blacks fled servitude to fight for the British, who promised freedom in exchange for military service. The Revolutionary Army never matched the British offer, and most histories of the period have ignored this remarkable story. The conventional wisdom says that abolition was impossible in the fragile new republic. Nash, however, argues that an unusual convergence of factors immediately after the war created a unique opportunity to dismantle slavery. The founding fathers' failure to commit to freedom led to the waning of abolitionism just as it had reached its peak. In the opening decades of the nineteenth century, as Nash demonstrates, their decision enabled the ideology of white supremacy to take root, and with it the beginnings of an irreparable national fissure. The moral failure of the Revolution was paid for in the 1860s with the lives of the 600,000 Americans killed in the Civil War.

The Forgotten Fifth is a powerful story of the nation's multiple, and painful, paths to freedom.

5 out of 5 stars "The Black Founding Fathers and Mothers of the Revolutionary Age": An Essential History.......2006-05-26

Gary Nash's _The Forgotten Fifth: African Americans in the Age of Revolution_ is an excellent introduction to early U.S. history, particularly the Revolutionary Period, from an African American perspective. What becomes clear from his study is that American history and the story of the nation's founders cannot be understood without a thorough examination of the lives and contributions of African Americans.

Much of the groundwork for these lectures is contained in Nash's 1991 work, _Race and Revolution_, which is an excellent companion to this work because it excerpts the writings and petitions of the black founding fathers: people like Richard Allen, Benjamin Banneker, Prince Hall, and James Forten. Nash reminds readers of an important fact: African Americans were actively involved in the debates of the Revolutionary Period and in the military action as well, fighting on both the American and the British side. In terms of the military involvement, white and black soldiers fought side-by-side in integrated units in the Revolutionary War, a phenonemon which would not re-occur until the Korean War, nearly two hundred years later.

The first chapter "The Black Americans' Revolution" discusses African Americans' participation in the Revolutionary War, a subject that is generally not widely known in the United States. Nash describes the large flight of slaves and freemen to the British-side who offered emancipation in 1775 through Lord Dunmore's Emancipation Proclamation. In contrast, the American forces offered freedom in exchange for one year of military service. For the colonials, wide-spread emancipation was never offered despite the enlightenment rhetoric expressed in the Declaration of Independence and in state constitutions.

Nash begins chapter one by crediting previous historians and, in particular, William C. Nell, whose _Colored Patriots of the American Revolution_ (1855) was the first historical account of black soldiers fighting for the Americans. Nash discusses how Nell, a black school teacher in Boston, focused exclusively on black patriots, de-emphasizing black participation on the British side. The emphasis of Nell's history advanced a political argument for black citizenship and rights in the 1850s, during a period when rights were being retracted in the North.

Chapter two "Could Slavery Have Been Abolished?" looks closely at the contradiction between the Declaration of Independence, with its statements about unalienable rights, and the Constitution, which inscribed legal slavery. Nash makes a convincing case that there was an opportunity for abolition at the beginning of the Republic, which was later sacrificed to short term political interests reflecting the North and Mid-Atlantic states' lack of conviction. Nash criticizes the trend among professional U.S. historians to apologize for the founding fathers' inaction on abolition--the view that historical circumstances did not permit abolition at this time. Nash offers insights about the conflicted views and attitudes of Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, John Adams, James Madison, and Thomas Jefferson on slavery.

The third chapter discusses citizenship and the hardening of racial codes in the 1800s. African Americans' rights and freedoms in the North and Mid-Atlantic states were being curtailed by legislation barring blacks' participation in civic life and foreclosing economic opportunities. Much of the chapter contrasts the views of two Philadelphians: James Forten, a black patriot of the Revolutionary War, and Tench Coxe, a white politician who published pamphlets on race in American in the 1810s and 1820s. Nash threads the discussion of Forten's and Coxe's views throughout the chapter in order to discuss black and white views on race and citizenship in the early 1800s.

A final comment is that this book is very readable in a way that academically-oriented histories often are not. Nash is a diligent scholar and a strong writer with a gift for brevity. As a result, the book can be enjoyed in a few sittings, yielding rewards well worth a reader's time. The footnotes lead in many different directions, and point out new areas of interest for amateur and professional historian alike. There is a wealth of knowledge in this short book.

_The Forgotten Fifth_ can be read profitably by high school, college, and graduate students. It is an important study that will enrich and deepen one's understanding of American history.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2006-02-23

Gary Nash has done it again. He ponders whether abolition following the Revolutionary War would have been possible. He provides the most detailed argument to date as to how and why it could of happened. I, being a historian myself, had previously accepted the opposition side and thought abolition would not of been possible following the revolutionary war due to states rights and the loose union established by the thirteen colonies during the war for independence, but Nash brings up some interesting points as to why this train of thought is an inaccurate portrayal of the times. The book also discusses some of the black leaders following the revolution and their attempts to gain an equal footing for blacks within the new republic. The political struggle of blacks during this period of American History is often untold, and Nash does an outstanding job of summing up what occurred in such a short and easy read that will leave you wanting more. I wholeheartedly reccomend this book to those who wish to explore a forgotten part of our history. For further reading on the subject I would reccomend "Washington's Decision," "Water from the Rock," and "The Negro in the American Revolution."

This is a must read for all in the black diaspora. Read how slaves organized revolted and gained authonomy. free from slavery in the 18th century. You will also find how they maintained their culture vitually unchanged in 2002! It is an amazing book with deep insight into this proud maroon culture in South America, Surinam. They trace their roots all the way back specific villages in Africa!

The Americas in colonial times were a setting for some of the most fascinating events and developments in all of history. The meeting of two worlds created sparks and waves unlike those produced by any other historical event. Because of its monumental importance and its unique nature, the area has attracted hordes of authors.

However, in writing about topics in colonial American history, one must heed the ever-present danger of Euro-centricity. Most of the non-Europeans who took part in the creation of colonial societies (e.g. Africans and Native Americans) are all too silent in the available sources. Because of this, many scholars tend to rely too heavily on European perspectives. On the other hand, some have adopted the opposite extreme and have relied almost solely on non-European accounts when available.

Richard Price, in examining the early history of the Saramaka maroons of Suriname with his 1983 work First-Time: The Historical Vision of an Afro-American People, is fortunately able to find the mean between these extremes. The strength of Price's book lies in its respect for non-European views, its impartiality, and its truth-seeking. Price makes explicit the extant importance of the Saramaka's oral history, not only the history itself, but also the manner in which the Saramaka preserve it. However, while he uses the Saramaka versions of events as a framework, Price is always sure to corroborate these accounts with "documentary" or "archival" evidence, and when he is unable to do so, he candidly alerts the reader. Price has a hunger for the truth. He often researches the most subtle details of Saramaka stories in order to provide the reader with a fuller story. These details are often also linked by Price to historical realities and conditions that are easily overlooked in a reading of the Saramaka accounts.

Finally, I was impressed by the structure of the book- each page divided into two halves: the top sections containing a piece of Saramaka oral history, the bottom halves analyzing and critiquing these accounts using all other available sources and discussing their importance in Saramaka history and to the Saramaka people despite their flaws and inaccuracies.

Overall, Price's work is a valuable asset to the collective history of colonial America, and a seeming treasure for the Saramaka people today.

                                      Book Description

A classic of historical anthropology, First-Time traces the shape of historical thought among peoples who had previously been denied any history at all. The top half of each page presents a direct transcript of oral histories told by living Saramakas about their eighteenth-century ancestors, "Maroons" who had escaped slavery and settled in the rain forests of Suriname. Below these transcripts, Richard Price provides commentaries placing the Saramaka accounts into broader social, intellectual, and historical contexts.

First-Time's unique style of presentation preserves the integrity of both its oral and documentary sources, uniting them in a profound meditation on the roles of history and memory. This second edition includes a new preface by the author, discussing First-Time's impact and recounting the continuing struggles of the Saramaka people.

This excellent atlas of the human anatomy attempts to provide a more three-dimensional representation of the human body than similar publications. It fully succeeds to the degree possible in a printed medium. The presentation works by showing the various regions or sections of the body at various angles and at posterior, medial, and lateral viewpoints.

Instead of relying solely on illustrations (as the venerable "Gray's Anatomy" does), this atlas also employs superb photographs from cadavers and selected radiographs. But let's go back to the illustrations. These detailed, finely rendered color illustrations set this atlas apart. Pairing these with the photographs allows one to clearly see structures, tissues, and organs.

A brief but thorough user's guide clearly explains how to effectively use this atlas. Armed with an understanding of how of how the images are labeled, what nomenclature is used, and which abbreviations have been appropriated, even a lay person can set off to explore the inner structures of the human body.

Note that, as the preface states, this test "is foremost a visual guide and interactive learning resource to be used in conjunction with a clinical anatomy book." Hence, one must not expect this book to explain the role and function of the body's various systems and structures.

5 out of 5 stars Human interior designýwhat is digastric?.......2001-07-07

Research is one of the most important elements of great writing. Verifiable details not only carry the story forward, but also teach and allow the readers to trust the writer, so they are able to suspend disbelief. Unfortunately, the reviews of this book are dry and do not show the potential of completely describing the anatomical structure of the human body.

Is there a doctor or nurse in your story?

The renderings of cadavers show the entire system of nerves, muscles, tendons, veins, arteries, etc. Therefore, if your character is hiking, falls, and breaks a bone you can be very specific about the break and how it affects the surrounding tissue. Was the bone an ulna or a fibula? The first is a broken arm, and it is possible that both major bones (second is radius) are broken. If repelling down a cliff wall in order to get away from a pack of wolves is part of the story, how will s/he do it? What muscles and tendons are affected by the break? The second is a leg bone between the knee and ankle; if this and the femur are broken, do the bones protrude through the skin? Can s/he stand, walk, or crawl?

What I specifically like about this book is the ability to describe the details surrounding any body part because I can see it. The diagrams are clearly labeled in each of the sections, which are the Trunk --Body Wall and Spine, Thorax, Abdomen, Pelvis and Perineum, Lower Limb, Upper Limb, Head and Neck, and Cranial and Autonomic Nerves.

Remember, if the digastric is inflamed, the culprit could be a rusty nail that caused lockjaw because there is no vaccine available. For my research, this is book is five stars.

This book combines renderings, cadaver photos, x-rays to make a complete view of the human anatomy. A must have.
