Book Description

Pop culture and psychobabble tell us to make ourselves the center of the universe in order to be happy. Churches have communicated the false idea that God exists to give us all that we selfishly want. In this book, Max Lucado reminds us that it's not about us, it's all about God. It is through this shift in thinking that we can truly live an unburdened, happy life.

ANY BIBLE BASED INSTRUCTION IS GOOD BUT THE PURPOSE DRIVEN LIFE BY RICK WARREN HITS RIGHT ON THE MONEY WHERE MAX MAY NOT DRIVE IT HOME AS WELL ON THIS ONE.

5 out of 5 stars What makes us feel worthy?.......2007-09-12

I read this book twice and really enjoyed it! I love it so much because when I read this book I have a sense of comfort, protection, and ...well a sigh of relief! I rush around and feel like I'm trying to make the world happen, but this book reminds me that I can rest, sit next to Dad and enjoy being with HIM. Whew!! The pressure is off of me. Where else can I get a true sense of worth then from Him. I'm beginning to understand that sometimes that is the only thing that endures. I didn't feel belittled by his book but drawn into a secure humbleness. I find it relaxing that I don't have to find the VERY THING that pleases me. I usually can't find it anyway, especially when I'm focused on myself.

Book Description

"A valuable contribution to public policy debates concerning the workplace of the future and the nature and implications of the 'information economy.'"
—Choice (of the first edition)

In this eye-opening book, Joan Greenbaum tells the story of changes in management policies, work organization, and the design of office information systems from the 1950s to the present. She describes the impact of new technologies on the organization of working life with a keen awareness of the social forces that seek to benefit from them, showing how the process is driven by the needs of capitalist profit and control over the workforce rather than the good of society or greater efficiency.

Windows on the Workplace takes as its starting-point the experience of office workers and their own accounts of it. The book includes interviews with a wide range of workers, including young people entering a workplace in which the expectation of stable, long-term employment has all but disappeared. Greenbaum's approach is to locate their experiences and expectations within broader social and economic patterns, and to show how these patterns are constantly changing.

In a field that is constantly changing, this book captures the moment and clarifies the direction in which it is moving. It exposes the myth that technological advance and free market economics are creating a better future for all, and reveals the reality behind the myth.

5 out of 5 stars A Compact Treasure.......2007-08-29

It is always a pleasure to come across a book through the Amazon search that I'd never find wandering through a book store!

I began my work career in the early 70's as a typist/transcriptionist at the age of eighteen; I progressed in the 70's to an office manager, putting myself through college before entering the health care field. I have always remained interested in the nature of office work, as it provided both enjoyment and a good living for me.

This book documents the rise of the computer in companies, as the author is a former programmer from the 60's into the 80's, along with an aducation in economics. Her focus is, to a large extent, on the change in those who programmed and ran the earlier generations of computers. These were 'status' jobs requiring considerable intuitive as well as academic skills. However, over time, these careers were either downgraded or eliminated entirely through outsourcing. Simultaneously, the nature of the average office changed radically from the ones in which I worked 30 years ago to the fragmented, multitasking cubicles of today. My ability to type 150 wpm got me into the work, when we were on Selectrics and using carbon paper. In fact, by the time I left the field I had 75 transcriptionists working under me. All these jobs would basically be gone today, replaced by voice-actuated computer programs, or electronically outsourced. Concurrent with the elimination of the average office (and certainly typing/word processing pools) has come the elimination of virtually all office positions above the receptionist. Executives and managers now are expected to do most of their own text generation themselves.

There were a few factual errors: the author speaks about the Vydec and the Wang in the 70's being the first dedicated word processors, where those of us who did this work know the IBM MT/ST, introduced in 1964, preceded those by years. These dinosaurs of text work are long since gone, and it's a shame younger generations won't have examples to see other than in grainy photos.

Part of the value of book is the ability to see parallels in other types of work that have declined in this country, often to outsourcing. The author speaks of the enormous number of bank tellers gone since the development of the ATM in the 1980's. Now, the banks are working very, very hard to eliminate branch banks entirely and force customers to bank on-line.

This is a very 'readable' work on what might sound boring on the casual look. With the author's personal contributions and some excellent photos included, it is interesting, well-organized, and beautifully presented. I found this book accidentally on a search and have been so glad I did. A great read!

3 out of 5 stars Reasonably amusing and informative, but vastly overpriced..........2006-08-13

This is one of those books that is something of a "problem child" to rate. On one hand, the subject matter (a newly divorced fellow coming to terms with his kitchen) has potential, as does the approach - first person with a light touch, with helpful recipes and kitchen hints for other newbie cooks.

Unfortunately, "Unsafe On Any Burner" doesn't quite deliver. I don't mean to impugn the author's character - quite the contrary, I think I'd like him if I met him - but his sense of humor just can't carry this book. If you want humor in your cookbooks, you can find much better in Alton Brown, Peg Bracken (the "I Hate To Cook Book", which had me cackling hysterically 40 years ago), M.F.K. Fisher, Patrick F McManus ("Whatchagot Stew"), Ayun Halliday ("Dirty sugar Cookies")or Ann Hodgman ("One Bite Won't Kill You"). Compared to those cook/authors (especially Halliday, who mixes recipes with autobiographical anecdotes that will leave you in stitches), Gosman comes off as lacking any comedic edge. It's not that he is unfunny or unappealing; he just needed to punch up his writing style quite a bit if he wanted to center a cookbook around his misadventures in the kitchen and grocery store. By this, I mean that these anecdotes wouldn't be out of place in a Reader's Digest humor column like "Notes From All Over" or "Life In These United States". So they're OK, but you can't base a book around them without considerable dressing up.

Similarly, as a cookbook, this doesn't come off either. There are recipes scattered throughout this slim volume, and some of them seem appealing, but there are hardly enough to justify the purchase. I count less than 30 here. That's fewer than you'd find in a typical two issue run of "Woman's Day" or "Real Simple" magazines, and far far less than a helpful beginner's volume like "Dad's Own Cookbook" or "Help! My Apartment Has A Kitchen In It!", both of which cost far less. And in the autobiogaphical memoir categoty, Halliday's 'Dirty Sugar Cookies" has an equal number of recipes for little more than 1/2 the price...and as I said, the writing is much sharper, more mordant and funnier.

Even with these weaknesses, I'd still rate "Unsafe..." higher if it hadn't been issued as a hardcover with a $23 cover price. The publisher claims 200 pages, but this is a small digest sized book (with wide margins and a lot of large blank spaces) that happens to be in hardcover. Right next to it on the stands, I found copies of "Cooking Healthy For Two", "Cooking School Secrets For Real World Cooks", and "How To Peel A Peach"; all these volumes were vastly superior in instructional value, content and all had over 100 recipes...and all three were less than $20. With that kind of competition for your 'newbie cook' dollar, I honestly can't rate it higher than 3 stars.

Still, I am sure that some will find this slim volume as a very helpful entry into 'real world' cooking if they get this as a graduation or birthday gift from a sympathetic friend or relative. And if the book is ever issued in trade paperback at a price under $12, I may get it just for amusement value. If Gosman ever does a follow up volume, I may well have a look at it on the stands and see if his cookbook writing skills have improved.

I'm pulling for you, Fred...but your editor isn't doing you any favors letting material this bland and tame out with your name on it. Lock yourself in a room with the collected works of Erma Bombeck and learn how to sharpen your wit, and you might turn out something to be proud of.

    5 out of 5 stars A tour d'force of writing!.......2000-05-11

This masterpiece can only be described as Dave Barry meets Emilio the Chef. Unsafe on Any Burner is filled with histarical anticdotes, recipes, and cooking blunders for the begining cook. Fred Gosman hits a homerun with this hard to put down classic. The humor, wisdom, and prose of this literary triumph would even impress the likes of Mark Twain(god rest his soul). My only complaint is the $23 price tag. Please try to price the book for the likes of the common man. Kudos to Mr. Gosman for this gift to humanity.

            Book Description

When bombs are falling and western journalism is the only game left in town "fixers" are the people who sell war correspondents the human tragedy and moral outrage that makes news editors happy.

It’s dangerous, a little amoral and a lot desperate.

Award-winning comix-journalist Joe Sacco goes behind the scene of war correspondence to reveal the anatomy of the big scoop. He begins by returning us to the dying days of Balkan conflict and introduces us to his own fixer; a man looking to squeeze the last bit of profit from Bosnia before the reconstruction begins. Thanks to a complex relationship with the fixer Joe discovers the crimes of opportunistic warlords and gangsters who run the countryside in times of war. But the west is interested in a different spin on the stories coming out of Bosnia. Almost ten years later, Joe meets up with his fixer and sees how the new Bosnian government has "dealt" with these criminals and Joe ponders who is holding the reins of power these days...

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars Sacco's Sarajevan Search.......2005-11-01

Just to be clear, this is not a graphic novel, as some people are saying. It is graphic non-fiction, or graphic reportage, occupying a gray area somewhere between newsprint, photojournalism, memoir, cartooning, and essay. Sacco's first such book on Bosnia, Safe Area Gorazde, is a classic -- and those who found it compelling will certainly want to read this account of his 2001 return to Sarajevo. Aided by a Guggenheim fellowship, Sacco returned to do followup research and find old friends to see how they were getting along in peacetime. In his attempt to learn more about the siege of Sarajevo and the and its aftermath, he reconnects with an paramilitary veteran who had been his "fixer" on his previous trip in 1995. In war zones and trouble spots throughout the world, fixers are the oil that lubricates the machinery of international journalism. They are the ones who steer journalists to the right translator, hotel, driver, interviewer, clean hooker, alcohol, location, etc. -- for a few hundred in hard currency per day.

Sacco's fixer was Neven, a Bosnian Serb who loves his city and fought in one of the many ad hoc brigades that were assembled by charismatic men in the early days of the war before a real Bosnian army was established.  An outsize character, Neven becomes a kind of lens through which Sacco tries to understand the war's very confusing impact on Sarajevo. The book hopscotches between various stages of the war and the present in a kaleidoscopic jumble of images, confusing nicknames, and impenetrable mix of fact and myth. Through Neven, Sacco tells the fragmentary tale of some of the more prominent warlords (almost all of whom were shady prewar characters), and of their sometimes heroic, sometimes despicable activities during the siege. To a certain extent, they are the subject of the book, populist characters who took it upon themselves to create personal armies to fight the separatist Serbs when there was no central government or army to do so (most of the Yugoslav army supplies were handed over to Serbia following the dissolution of Yugoslavia). Of course, many of these patriotic men were also probably interested in enriching themselves, and as the war dragged on, attempts were made to incorporate them into the regular army and police and things got rather messy. As Sacco recounts, many of the "facts" surrounding various killings, atrocities, and profiteering by the warlords will forever remain obscured by the fog of war, and the need for politicians to wash their hands of those dirty times.

At the same time, what becomes increasingly interesting is the relationship between Sacco and Neven, and the plausibility of Neven's endless stories about what it was like "back then." Neven is a down and out character who owes money all over town, and Sacco clearly feels guilty about walking around with bundles of Deutchmarks, while his fixer is real-life war veteran. The subtle (and not so subtle) assaults on Sacco's wallet become a running theme, and are an interesting window on the less glamorous side of being a foreign correspondent. At the same time, as Sacco spends more and more time in Sarajevo, he meets more and more people who cast doubts on Neven's veracity. He's certainly known all over town, and certainly did fight in the war, but there's also clearly a gulf between his stories and the truth. And as a Serb, he's also somewhat of a pariah in his own home city, his apartment is seized by connected refugees, and a general antipathy for Serbs hover around him.

Ultimately, readers looking for a clear understanding of who was who, and what was what during the war, are going to be frustrated -- and are perhaps missing the whole point. This book is all about the fog of war, the strange mutations of time and place that raise certain men to power and then cast them aside, as well as the guilt and confusion of being an outsider looking in

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books I read last year.......2005-04-15

A darkly violent Fellinesque riff on the Bosnian war, this "graphic novel," by Joe Sacco is a fast read, a noirish examination of the relationship between a parachute journalist and the necessary local 'fixer' who serves as a local contact and makes it possible for the journalist to drop into a foriegn country and get a story. In this case, the local turns out to be a questionable ex-fighter whose war stories are both more and less true than appearances indicate. The fixer, a troubled ex-fighter scorned by his former comrades and spurned because of his ethnic background, is a terrific character, evocative of both the unresolved issues behind the Balkan wars as well as the marginalized citizens anywhere made exiles in their own land.

                Book Description

Enzyme assays are among the most frequently performed procedures in biochemistry and are routinely used to estimate the amount of enzyme present in a cell or tissue, to follow the purification of an enzyme, or to determine the kinetic parameters of a system. The range of techniques used to measure the rate of an enzyme-catalysed reaction is limited only by the nature of the chemical change and the ingenuity of the investigator. This book describes the design and execution of enzyme assays, covering both general principles and specific chapters. Building upon the highly popular first edition, this book combines revised or rewritten chapters with entirely new contributions. Topics include experimental protocols covering photometric, radiometric, HPLC, and electrochemical assays, along with methods for determining enzyme assays after gel electrophoresis. The theory underlying each method is outlined, together with a description of the instrumentation, sensitivity and sources of error. Also included are chapters on the principles of enzyme assay and kinetic studies; techniques for enzyme extraction; high- throughout screening; statistical analysis of enzyme kinetic data; and the determination of active site concentration. This second edition of Enzyme Assays will be valuable not only to biochemists, but to researchers in all areas of the life sciences.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Enzyme Assays Explained.......2006-01-16

In an age of computerized and automated asay systems, it is possible to gather data without understanding the chemistry or biochemistry involved. This may be suitable for lab techs who work for commercial companies, but it is not a good idea for serious scientists. This book explains how assays work, what can go wrong and what the limitations are. It also reviews the types of instrumentation commonly used in assays. It is an excellent resource for laboratory instructors and graduate students.

4 out of 5 stars A good guide to the principles of enzyme assay development........1999-07-27

Enzyme Assays: A Practical Approach is a good guide to the principles of assay development. It contains excellent chapters on the theoretical development of kinetic expressions and the statistical treatment of results. Different assays are illustrated (photometric, radiometric, chromatographic, and electochemical) in their respective chapters that include important considerations for assay development/use with each system. A chapter on buffers and protein determination is also included. Although the book provides some examples (in useful detail) of each kind of assay it is NOT a comprehensive overview. The chapters on electrochemical assays and the techniques for enzyme extraction are incomplete due only to the age of the volume (>5 years old). This book would be an excellent volume for those interested in enzyme assay development and would be suitable for a first year graduate chemistry/biochemistry course.

                      Book Description

Cell phone use has grown dramatically in the United States, from 340,000 subscribers in 1985 to over 128 million in 2001. Cell phones are typically used for only 18 months before being replaced, and by 2005 about 130 million of these devices, weighing approximately 65,000 tons, will be retired annually in the US. Most of them will initially be stored away in closets and drawers, creating a stockpile of about 500 million used phones that will soon enter the waste stream.

Waste in the Wireless World analyzes the environmental problems created by cell phones amd other wireless electronic devices, such as personal digital assistants, portable e-mail devices, pagers, pocket PCs, and MP3 music players. Wireless waste poses particularly acute problems when these small devices are sent to landfills or incinerators, where releases of the many toxic materials they contain threaten human health and the environment.

This book documents efforts in Europe, Japan, and Australia to deal with this fast-growing and hazardous waste stream. For example, Australia has implemented the world's first and only nationwide take-back program dedicated to recovering and recycling cell phones. In the European Union, pending directives will require electronics manufacturers to phase out toxic components and take responsibility for waste generated by products marketed in the EU. And forthcoming design guidelines in Japan will result in more long-lasting and recyclable electronic products with fewer toxic components.

In the US, no such national commitments have been made. INFORM provides the reader with a series of specific recommendations for minimizing the environmental and health impacts of this rapidly growing waste stream.

This INFORM Report analyzes the environmental problems created by cell phones, which also apply to other wireless electronic devices, such as personal digital assistants, portable e-mail devices, pagers, pocket PCs, and MP3 music players. All are made of similar materials and present problems with respect to the waste they generate. Wireless waste poses particularly acute problems when these small devices are sent to landfills or incinerators, where the release of the many toxic materials they contain creates threats to human health and the environment.
