5 out of 5 stars The ONLY way to raise great kids..........2007-09-27

I am a school psychologist, a parent, and a vocal advocate of the Love and Logic methods. This book has helped me personally and professionally, and is based on the idea that kids deserve love, respect, and oppportunities to learn from their mistakes. I recommend this book to teachers, parents, and anyone who works with kids. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A great read with tons of great advice.......2007-09-26

I love this book because I have been at a loss with what to do with my three year old. Timeouts don't work, yelling and getting angry doesn't work either. This book offers a fun to read philosophy with a plethora of stories to exemplify the techniques. I am not sure what the previous poster back in December of 2002 was talking about, this book is worth the purchase price and then some!

5 out of 5 stars Uncommon, Common Sense.......2007-09-13

An excellent model in which to rely upon to raise your children. It takes reading it over and over again to fully grasp and then implement.

5 out of 5 stars A life saver.......2007-08-26

With four boys driving me crazy every day (my oldest just turned 8 and my youngest is 2), this book has taught me great ways to deal with every day occurances. It is an easy read and has wonderful examples to help you see how to use their theories. It really does work, what they say to do in the book. I've read a lot of parenting books and this one has been the best by far. It is easy to read books on parenting, it's actually being able to do the things you read about that is hard. This book makes it easy to put into practice what you have read. It really has made my home a happier place to be.

    Book Description

"The time of freedom" was the name that plantation workers—campesinos—gave to Guatemala’s national revolution of 1944–1954. Cindy Forster reveals the critical role played by the poor in organizing and sustaining this period of reform.
Through court records, labor and agrarian ministry archives, and oral histories, Forster demonstrates how labor conflict on the plantations prepared the ground for national reforms that are usually credited to urban politicians. She focuses on two plantation zones that generated exceptional momentum: the coffee belt in the highlands around San Marcos and the United Fruit Company’s banana groves near Tiquisate. Although these regions were unlike in size and complexity, language and race, popular culture and work patterns, both erupted with demands for workers’ rights and economic justice shortly after the fall of Castañeda in 1944.
A welcome balance to the standard "top-down" histories of the revolution, Forster’s sophisticated analysis demonstrates how campesinos changed the course of the urban revolution. By establishing the context of grassroots mobilization, she substantially alters the conventional view of the entire revolution, and particularly the reforms enacted under President Albenz.

3 out of 5 stars Review by the "Journal of Religion and Popular Culture".......2004-12-08

Billig, Michael. Syracuse: Syracuse University Press, 2001. 185 pp. $19.95 US. ISBN 0-8156-0705-9 (PB).

[1] This short book explores developments in the world of early rock n' roll, calling attention to the significant, but frequently overlooked contributions of Jews. As a sociologist, Michael Billig is sensitive to the wider context of the burgeoning post-war developments in American popular music, which means his study of the Jewish presence in this field is a story about "culture, prejudice and identity" (1). Strange as it sounds to modern sensitivities, such a book may not have been well-received in the recent past. Now, however, in a cultural climate in which "the old prejudices recede and ethnicity becomes something that can be more easily displayed in public, it is possible to draw attention to things that previously were only half recognized and about which it would have been better not to comment too loudly" (14-15).

[2] Contrary to popular perception, Billig argues, Jews were not only involved with the behind-the-scenes, business side of the developing rock music industry. Or said another way, there is more to the story of rock 'n' roll Jews than Brian Epstein's management of the Beatles (17-18). True, many of those introduced by this book are lesser-known figures (managers and impresarios, songwriters, and record producers). But there are also examples of a more public Jewish presence. The famous disc jockey Alan Freed, for one, helped popularize rock n' roll, and of course no study on the topic of Jews in music would be complete without biographical sketches of such luminaries as Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Lou Reed, and Leonard Cohen. (The author apologizes early-on for omissions, making it clear there is no attempt to provide an encyclopedic listing of Jews involved with the rock music industry.)

[3] Why did Jews find success in the world of rock n' roll? Billig often returns to this question, observing, for one thing, that since Jews were often excluded from traditional professions, they were "all the more ready to plunge into the new opportunities that the establishment considered beneath their [sic] dignity," like the entertainment industry (21; cf. 32). Further, rock's (black) blues roots were viewed with suspicion by (white) mainstream music companies, which used the term "race music." Jews were ideally suited to orchestrate the fusion of Southern white country music and Southern black blues that became rock. Because they did not share the suspicions that ran both ways between these groups, Jews, "who were distancing themselves from their own cultural heritage" in an effort to fit into American society, "could play with the musical heritages of gospel, blues and country music, moving easily from one to another" (14). And so it was that many of the companies willing to record early black rhythm and blues music ("race labels") were owned by Jews (e.g., Chess Records, who recorded, among others, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, and Muddy Waters). For their part, Jewish songwriters had so effectively adapted to the music industry that their songs were occasionally assumed to be the work of African American artists (e.g., the histories often overlook the fact that Elvis' hit "Hound Dog" was written by Jews, not African Americans [see 42-47]; the composers Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller are thoroughly introduced [47-60]).

[4] This is a fine book. The author guides readers behind the familiar heroes of rock n' roll to trailblazers who helped make their success possible in the first place. Among conclusions reached, Billig finds that the contribution of American Jews "has been out of all proportion to the numbers of Jews in the population at large" (157). What is more remarkable is the extent to which this story has been ignored.

        Book Description

Liverpool, The 5th Beatle, An African-American Odyssey is a perspective on the rise of the Liverpool Mersey Sound and the Beatles by someone who drank in the same pubs and played in the same clubs as the Beatles. Mr. Pitts delves much deeper than the average rock journalist to present an amazingly original comparison of Liverpool with Black America of the 1950s and '60s, giving us an insight into how the social and musical conditions in our Black-American community found a direct heart-beat amongst the Liverpool youth who were singularly responsible for the rise of the Mersey Sound and the incredible success of the Beatles. Not only is his book inspiring to minority groups throughout America, but his novel insight into the Beatles and the ghetto conditions in which the Mersey Sound began has stirred avid interest in people of all ages who are mesmerized by the truth behind the Beatles' legend.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Attempt to Cash in on the Beatles.......2004-04-20

This is a self-serving waste of paper (mostly filler photos & anecdotes, less that 50 pages of "new" text). The author should stick to his fiction & autobiography. By far the worst piece of work on the Beatles ever published that I've ever read. My suggestion to this author is to stop trying to cash in on the Beatles!

"About the Author:  Prem Willis-Pitts was born and raised in Liverpool. Ringo Starr worked with his father, he had a girlfriend in common with Paul McCartney and he replaced George Harrison in a band that George left to join the Beatles. He saw the Beatles perform hundreds of times in Liverpool."

What evidence supports these claims other than the constant mention that his dad worked with Ringo?  He includes a few photos of himself playing guitar, but there's no mention of when or where they were taken? It's a poor attempt to win credibility with potential buyers!  Sadly, this ability to play on the sympathies of readers keeps popping up thoughout the book.

The "editorial reviews" suggest cheap name-dropping over substance. Louise Harrison left Liverpool long before Merseybeat so how would she know if this book discusses "the reality behind the Beatles' formation and background"? What information does the author mention about the city and Beatles that Sam Leach, self-professed Beatles manager "pre Brian Epstein," did not already know? It's nice to have these "quotes" from "famous" people, but they mean nothing!

The best "quote" is that the book was "wonderfully researched." Where are the sources (other than a brief list at the end)? A 300 page book, filled with photos, many irrelevant even to the text at hand; photos are used as filler - check the viewable excerpts! Some ideas are good, such as those about the local dialect, the influence of the Irish, and the comparisons with Black America, but these comments are made out of hand with no evidence to support such claims.

He claims Liverpool 8 was the "Irish ghetto" of his childhood, yet it was a Black ghetto within a decade.  How did such a fast transformation happen?  Was it Black or Irish?  Or both?  If it was both, why dismiss the Irish when it suits his argument?

In "Drugs and Rock `n Roll - Opening for The Beatles" several unrelated photos are used to "enhance" the writing. How does a recent photo of the Casablanca Club (or the girl standing in front of the club) relate to the chapter? Or the two large photos from the late 80s? All filler and no substance! The photos (like many other "recent" ones), are from the 80s, yet the book was published in 2000, and the subject is the 1960s! Makes you wonder when Mr. Willis-Pitts was last in Liverpool.

The anecdote of "opening for the Beatles" recollects an attempt to get some cheap drugs, and subsequent attempt to play while trying to stay high. Most posters of the concerts do not mention the Beatles, so who is to say they performed at the same show? The Beatles only headlined 1 of the posters! And he was higher than a kite!

He also distanced himself from the violence he describes, yet was willing to "have a go" at a racist drunken Londoner who fled once confronted by a Scouse accent! It's a thin line between violence and... as ever the moralist author always makes sure he's on the right side in the end! Discussing drugs and what they did to him and his friends is another example. He acknowledges that the lives of several associates were destroyed by drugs, yet describing how he was strong enough to leave it all behind when he chose to is a patronizing end to yet another self-serving story. How can anybody so drugged, as he constantly claimed to be, remember all of these details?

The worst drivel is his psycho-babble that claims to be an understanding of the Beatles through their marriages. John and "iconoclastic" Yoko; Paul and Yuppie Linda; George's fantasy to follow Paul by marrying model Patti Boyd (BEFORE Paul got married!!); and poor Ringo marrying at his "peasant" level.

His generalizations of people from Liverpool are disgraceful. He argues that it is stereotyping, then details how Scousers are supposedly violent and unruly, deceptive and full of "shady" dealings since any item is "fair game," and thus do absolutely anything given the opportunity! I won't mention the obvious errors in his comments on football. Writing this book proves he grabbed his own opportunity here!

The book has merits. It's interesting to see a portrayal of the city from somebody who did not achieve fame or fortune (sadly it seems an attempt to win both was the reason for writing the book!). If there is one good use, then it's the few interviews done with musicians from the time.

Overall, a frustrating read which I will NEVER pick up again.  Unless you collect absolutely everything about the Beatles, don't waste your time or money on this. I suggest the author stick to his fiction and autobiographical work, and leave the historical events to the historians. Anybody interested in the history of Liverpool's music scene should read Wondrous Place by Paul du Noyer.  It covers the 1950s to the present, but every page is worth reading, there are few photos to fill pages, and only a page or two of "personal anecdotes" by the author, though they relate to the book.

What's next?  Ringo's first wife's nephew writes of the family reunion at a Who concert while cousin Zak was playing drums for Roger and the boys! I'm sure Ringo wouldn't be there, but he could get a few mentions and a front cover photo!!  And if that sells like this book, it's proof that you CAN fool some of the people all of the time!  My suggestion to this author: give a rest to any attempt to cash in on the Beatles and concentrate on other things!!

        5 out of 5 stars COME TOGETHER.......2001-12-04

The writing is crisp, sharp and clear. The author does an excellent job of bringing the black neighborhoods of Liverpool to the world's collective attention. He also had the unique advantage of having an indirect connection with a Beatle -- his father and Ringo were coworkers!

The influence of black musicians on rock and roll has been well documented. Spirituals and the blues segued into rock and roll. In a recent interview, Paul McCartney himself said had it not been for the black musical pioneers, he and most other musicians would never have achieved the level of accomplishment they have today.

A riveting, well researched book. The Beatles and their music brought people together and were certainly a unifying force among the masses. I think this is something that will be treasured by all.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating comparison of Liverpool with Black America.......2001-02-21

        P. Willis-Pitts was raised in a Liverpool black ghetto and become a rock musician at the time of the Mersey Sound phenomenon. He draws upon his own unique background (Ringo Starr worked with his father) to provide an insider's perspective on the rise of the Liverpool Mersy Sound as one who played in the same pubs, with the same bands, and hung out with the same people as did the Beatles. Liverpool, The 5th Beatle presents a fascinating comparison of Liverpool with Black America of the 1950s and 60s, providing insights into how the social and musical conditions in the African-American community found a direct reflection among the Liverpool Irish youth (including the Beatles) who were singularly responsible for the rise of the Mersey Sound and the resultant British invasion of the American music scene. Liverpool, The 5th Beatle is "must" reading for all Beatles fans and students of American popular music.

5 out of 5 stars Liverpool, The Fifth Beatle.......2000-09-27

An engrossing eyewitness account of how and why the unique clash of heritages, races, and music in Liverpool spawned the Beatles. The writing is vivid and rhythmic, perceptive and humorous, robust and textured. The photographs lend a stark, unadorned realism to the words on the pages. Full of adventure, wit, and astute social commentary that recounts Liverpool's history in terms of its parallels with the underclasses of American society and its lessons for our future.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible read.......1999-02-26

This book, and this is not a stretch of the truth, literally changed the course of my college education. I was political science major a few years back when I took a politics and media course. Professor Kerbel's book was one of several we read. Kerbel does a masterful job of what can be a dry subject. Kerbel hits all the relevant theory and still keeps the narrative moving. This book can be read by a student or someone with a interest in politics or the media. It literally changed the way I view media coverage of politics. Because of this book, I spent a summer at CNN and wrote my thesis on this topic. A tour de force!

The Performing Series by renowned authors Iris Blanc and Cathy Vento, takes users to a higher level of learning through applied and project-based activities that go beyond the mechanics of the software. Most books begin by teaching software skills. The Performing Series presents various business documents first, then shows learners the Office 2003 skills needed to create them. This approach shows the relevance of skills learned as technology is applied to task.

2 out of 5 stars Just the facts and little else.......2006-11-10

No great moment by moment accounts here, only an overview of what units and divisions were where and what happened to them.Very brief combat accounts such as " they were heavily engaged before being pushed back to the river Bug" are most of what you will find along with an some short equipment notes such as " a hetzer group of 12 units was added until sent elswhere" Not what I was hoping for after reading books like "HELLS GATE" and "TIGERS IN THE MUD".The most interesting part is a sideline about the Slovack uprising at the time and it's key players. This book does suffer from some translation problems that do not improve it's flow.Treat this as reference material not the defining account of the end of Army Group Center.Maybe Douglas Nash can tell this story next...

5 out of 5 stars Title Says It All.......2006-07-12

The title does indeed say it all. An excellent book you won't put down "To The bitter End". This really is a superb addition to the literature in English about these battles, and all credit to the translator!

          2 out of 5 stars Maybe it's poorly translated.......2006-07-03

On the first page the author claims that the withdrawal of the SS Pz Korps upon the termination of Citadel left a gaping hole in the German front that the Soviets promptly poured through, leading to the collapse east of the Dneiper. He goes on to say that, in one action or another, many Soviet tanks were knocked out by Stukas, some at close range. What is close range for a stuka?

5 out of 5 stars Rare information on overlooked battles.......2006-06-27

Considering how little is published English on this phase of the war, the publishers really should be congratulated for doing a superb job! There is loads of detail covering these rare battles, and it really is nitpicking from another reviewer to give the book only two stars for not including personal accounts. Personal accounts on these battles are not easy to come by at all, and I understand the author died some years ago, so the publishers were unable to revise this English edition. As it stands, it provides a lot of information completely unavailable elsewhere, and is recommended to those who are interested in researching some of the less well-known aspects of the War on the Eastern Front in World War II.

2 out of 5 stars expert on books from Whermacht prespective.......2006-06-20

I hate to be negative about a book from the German prespective, as they are rare, but I feel I must for others not to waste
their money. The book is a general and basic operational
overview of the end stages of combat in the Silesia area. If you
are only looking for dates, places, and names of units involved
this book is for you but, if you are like me, there are ZERO
personal accounts included, which are needed to "flesh" out a
book like this, to give you a better understanding of the various battles described.

            Book Description

In this collection, a group of historians explores the role of masculinity in the modern history of politics and war. Building on three decades of research in women's and gender history, the book opens up new avenues in the history of masculinity. The essays by social, political and cultural historians therefore map masculinity's part in making revolution, waging war, building nations, and constructing welfare states. Although the masculinity of modern politics and war is now generally acknowledged, few studies have traced the emergence and development of politics and war as masculine domains in the way this book does. Covering the period from the American Revolution to the Second World War and ranging over five continents, the essays in this book bring to light the many "masculinities" that shaped--and were shaped by--political and military modernity.

              Book Description

Up to now, all cosmological studies are based on mathematical assumptions that generated an expanding, curved space - the element in which our Universe is found.

All modern observations find no evidence of space expanding; and every view of the night sky now shows a flat Universe.

The implication of these modern observations means that the Big Bang took place in Flat, Euclidean Space [the Einstein-deSitter model] and that the distancing of galaxies from one another is due to the inertia of the initial Big Bang push.

Calculation of the Hubble constant must therefore include Earth's motion away from the Big Bang's Epicenter thereby changing all prior analysis of the size, shape, and age of the Universe.

So to analyze the size, shape and age of the Universe we need to include the inertia driven systems of galaxies. With these concepts and recent measurements of Earth's velocity and direction, [as reported in the Astrophysical Journal] along with those of nearby galaxies, the new Universe is revealed and reported in this book.

Using every current observation and findings this book:
              - locates the Center of the Universe
              - computes its age
              - and presents a plausible scenario for its beginning.

The solar system-our sun and the planets and other bodies that orbit it-has remained essentially the same for hundreds of millions of years. What, then, is the New Solar System? Quite simply, what's new is our understanding of what in fact makes up the solar system, and our deeper understanding of long-known objects such as the planets, their satellites, comets, and asteroids. The ancient Romans observed and noted the motions of the known planets at that time. But it wasn't until 1781 that Uranus was discovered. Neptune was discovered in 1846, and Pluto was discovered in 1930. Pluto's moon, Charon, was only discovered in 1978, or about the time that robotic exploration of the solar system became a serious undertaking. Scientific American's UNDERSTANDING THE NEW SOLAR SYSTEM reveals the latest knowledge of the composition and nature of our solar family. Here you'll discover what lies beyond the orbit of Pluto, which solar body is the most volcanically active, and which solar system bodies have atmospheres and may harbor primitive life, and much, much more.
