3 out of 5 stars It's..O.K........2006-01-10

I've seen better books in my day. It's ok, but I prefer things more in depth.

4 out of 5 stars Mostly good.......2005-10-21

I have had previous experience with the Macromedia Suite and found the book a good way to introduce each piece of software and how each piece integrates with the others. The book does contain some typos and leaves out some steps though.

4 out of 5 stars Great resource.......2005-08-31

I recommend this entire series of books from Macromedia. They have expansive coverage of the Flash application and the skills needed to master the program. I highly recommend it to an midlevel to advanced level designer.

Can't wait to see what they publish next! sign me up for the Macromedia Studio 8: Training for the Source book. enjoy and happy designing.

5 out of 5 stars Good addition to the library.......2004-10-08

If you've worked through Dreamweaver MX2004 from the Source, and have purchased Studio MX2004, this is an excellent introduction to begin learning how best to make use of each product and make them work together. I wouldn't recommend it if you are a beginner to Dreamweaver, however.

5 out of 5 stars Great Intro to Studio MX Development Process.......2004-08-31

Studio MX 2004: Training From the Source provides a fast-paced tour of Studio MX 2004. With 3-4 chapters each on Fireworks, Dreamweaver, Freehand, Flash, and ColdFusion, the book doesn't dwell on any application very long. This means, of course, that one should not expect to have mastery over all these programs just by reading the book, because some of these programs have a lot of uses and features.

What the book does accomplish is provide a fast, yet substantive introduction to how these tools can be integrated together into a smart workflow. That is, rather than simply trying to show you how to use each of these programs in isolation, this book shows you how to leverage the programs' capabilities as a suite. It totally changed my approach to how I design web sites.

Another area in which it is particularly strong is its clarity across highly diverse topics. The book ranges from Fireworks and Freehand (which are design-centered) to Flash and ColdFusion (which require programming). I had some experience with graphic design before coming to this but no experience with code. But thanks to this book, I learned how to write my first programming code in ActionScript and then ColdFusion, and even though I can't say I'm a great programmer, I at least understood it and it worked!

I highly recommend this book for those who want to get up to speed with Studio MX 2004 as a whole quickly and smartly. You may still need additional books to get greater depth on individual programs (I bought the Flash and Dreamweaver Training From the Source books as well), but it all starts with this book. It's more than a tour of the Studio: it's an introduction to the Studio's development paradigm.

        Book Description

The first special juvenile court was created in 1899. Since then, juvenile justice has had a chequered history, and is now more controversial than ever. Should our treatment of young offenders differ in its aims or principles from that of adult offenders? What role should ideas of punishment or retribution play? Should our aims be rehabilitative and educative rather than punitive? Should we divert young offenders from the criminal justice system altogether, opting for 'restorative' rather than 'retributive' justice?

These questions are addressed in this inter-disciplinary volume, which brings together criminologists, educationalists, psychologists and philosophers. Part I traces the history of juvenile justice, identifying patterns, and signs of what the future might hold. Part II tackles fundamental normative issues of punishment, moral education and restoration, with particular emphasis on the role of communication. Part III attends to the role that such emotions as shame and guilt should play in juvenile justice, paying particular, and critical, attention to Braithwaite's conception of reintegrative shaming.

5 out of 5 stars Figments of Darwinian Historical Imagination.......2001-05-20

This is a superb snapshot of the legend-creation process that has always braided with the legacy of Darwinism. Ideology has been described as a lack of information, and the absence of historical knowledge in depth of the development of Darwinism by the general public has left the field to sound bite summaries, the fodder of legend, myth, and outright falsehood. Both sides of the debate have shown their colours here, although the genesis of Social Darwinism has been the worst of the whole process. The book covers a range of topics from the hollywoodization of the Huxley-Wilberforce debate, to the strange tale of Darwin's death bed confession, from the Spanish Civil War to the questions of eugenics, and finally the fearful shadow of fascism at the end of the whole business. The author starts with a fact little grasped, that Darwinism began with many of the tactics in their early forms of the modern publicity machine. The clear objections of many critics, in the confusion of the fact of evolution versus the theory of the mechanism, counted little as the promotion of the Darwin camp ensured the success of Darwin's theory irregardless of its deeper scientific merits as it tagged along with the timely spread of evolutionary thinking in general.

2 out of 5 stars An intriguing and ghostly study of modern social thought........1997-04-11

Although there is something to be said for a catcy title, Myths and Misuses of Darwinism soon vanishes from the reader's mind. As the book is unacceptably skant in both content and innovation, the reader is unable to conjure the meaning of the book. Thus, the reader is forced to delve deep into the phantom pages in order to ascertain the author's argument. At times, however, by way of some supernatural sense, the author is able to express his views to the reader often without actually demonstrating them in the text. Although this book is unable to make a lasting impression, it offers a rare oppurtunity for the reader particpate a he must envision what the author will conclude about Myths and Misuses in Darwinism

                Book Description

The Interaction of High-Power Lasers with Plasmas provides a thorough self-contained discussion of the physical processes occurring in laser-plasma interactions, including a detailed review of the relevant plasma and laser physics. The book analyzes laser absorption and propagation, electron transport, and the relevant plasma waves in detail. It also discusses the physics of the electric and magnetic fields in a laser-induced plasma medium, laser-induced shock waves, rarefaction waves, heat waves, and the related hydrodynamic instabilities (Rayleigh-Taylor, Richtmyer-Meshkov, and Kelvin-Helmholtz). A pedagogical presentation, the book addresses the basic physics issues from first principles, using simple models wherever appropriate. The coverage provides a foundation on which the graduate student can build an understanding of the past and present research in this field. For the experienced researcher, the book is a comprehensive and useful presentation of laser-plasma interactions.

I have never, ever laughed so much and so hard at any book in my entire life! I laughed so hard that I cried. My co-workers would come over to my cubicle to see if I was alright since I was usually the only person in my row after 5pm and I would find myself laughing out loud even though I tried hard not to. This was a wonderful, wonderful book and I was sorry to finally finish it. I have read all but one of this author's books (I am having trouble finding the last one as it is out of print now). Of the 3 that I have read, this was the funniest with "Cruisin On Desperation" being next. Definitely an enjoyable read!

4 out of 5 stars Church Folks at Their Best.......2007-05-25

When Mother Eternal Ann Everlastin dies, the fried chicken hits the fan in Pat G'Orge-Walker's, Mother Eternal Ann Everlastin's Dead. After being a faithful member of Ain't Nobody Right But Us--All Others Goin' to Hell Church, pastored by the Rev. Knott Enough Money, Mother Everlastin moves her membership. Needless to say, the Rev. Bling Mo' Bling, of The No Hope Now--Mercy Neva Church, is all to happy to receive the wealthy-widowed-several-times-multimillionaire into his fold. When Mother suddenly dies with her hands clutched to the cash register during service, the antics begin as everyone competes for Mother's millions. Unknown to everyone, the overbearing Mother is still running things from the grave as she teaches the members of both churches a lesson on serving God with a sincere heart.

If you have ever gone to an African-American church you will recognize some of the antics in Mother Eternal Ann Everlastin's Dead. Although I am not a particular fan of this particular genre, I found this book to be laugh-out-loud funny at times. Walker managed to bring over-the-top characters to life while delivering a powerful message in the process.

If you are a Christian fiction fan and you like a good laugh, do, by all means, get a copy of Pat G'Orge-Walker's, Mother Eternal Ann Everlastin's Dead.

                  Book Description

In a similar manner to A Tour of the Arnhem Battlefields, this new volume covers in detail the scene of one of the greatest battles of World War II. Maps and then-and-now photographs illustrate the battle itself and offer a detailed guide to touring the area as it is today.

My Father (a WWII veteran) and I made an extraordinary trip with Cavanagh through the Ardennes in 2005 and we both have re-lived our trip with the aid of this book many times since then.

No one knows the Ardennes battlefields like Will Cavanagh ... No one. "A Tour of the Bulge Battlefield" makes that very evident.

If you have any interest at all in the Battle of the Bulge, I would highly recommend allowing Will Cavanagh to guide you, either in person or by way of this book.

5 out of 5 stars One Excellent Guide Book.......2007-01-02

In 1985, I journeyed from Aachen to Namur, Liege, Dinant, and Libramont on the way to Bastogne. I made the journey without a guide book and so spent considerable time just wandering around Bastogne and sort of stumbling upon things in that area. What a boon it would have been to have had Cavanagh's outstanding book for reference.

This little gem is full of outstanding text and some really great photographs not found in other books on the subject. This book deftly combines period photos with contemporary ones to bring the reader in. Appropriate and detailed unit maps accompany the text and make this book a bit more than just a tour book.

In fact, this book is really one of the better overall texts on the Battle of the Bulge. It is truly one of those books that you enjoy poring over again and again, as you learn something new each time.

Really, can't sing it's praises enough. Sure wish I had had it back in '85.

I was a battlefield tour guide in Europe for over three years. One of our most popular tours was the Ardennes Offensive aka "The Battle of the Bulge". Since we only had a day, we would drive up from Luxembourg City, paralleling the 3rd Army's relief route, and tour the Bastogne perimeter. If I had this book, I would've recommended this to my customers who wished to visit other sites of the battle. "A Tour of the Bulge Battlefield" is designed for the tourist who wishes to tour the battlefield(s) for himself/herself. Well researched and written, one could almost use this book as a secondary source in itself. The six chapters cover the entire battle, from the north around Stavelot, to the south in the Ettlebruch/Diekirch area. Each chapter is in itself an excellent capsulation of the battle and movements, both German and American. However, this is not a guidebook in the traditional sense, there is nothing about lodging, and very little regarding food, and other questions most tourists have. Also, what few maps there are inadequate, surprising considering this book is designed for auto-touring.

If you get several maps, the excellent Michelin series comes to mind, plus a traditional guidebook, and some `net research regarding transport, renting a car in Belgium/Luxembourg/Germany, this book would make for an outstanding historical vacation.

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide.......2004-07-05

I recently followed the trail of the well-known 'Kampfgruppe Peiper', with the help of this amply illustrated guide, from the then frontline in December 1944 at the German border to La Gleize/Stoumont in the Belgian Ardennes, about 60 kilometers from its point of departure. With the help of this guide it turned out to be a fascinating experience. The reader gets a very good picture, by surveying the terrain and reading this text, of the heavy fighting which took place in this area in this fateful period that took its toll on civilians and military alike. This guide provides not only an excellent description of the route Peiper and his men took but also contains much interesting background information. It also provides descriptions of the routes taken by the main German formations in other sectors of the front during their failed push to the west. A plus of the book is definitely that it pays lots of attention to the German perspective on what happened. This aspect is often neglected in other English language literature on the subject, e.g. in the Toland volume on the Battle of the Bulge. A minor point of criticism on this book in my view concerns the maps. The book contains maps, but as the author himself says in the introduction, the reader needs the relevant Michelin maps of the area as well to complete this otherwise very useful battlefield guide.

This is a must read for anyone interested in the history of the Battle of The Bulge. Will Cavanagh's latest book is a fascinating account of the battle. Take a ride in the Tiger Tanks of Kampfgruppe Pieper, feel the enthusiasm as they go on the counter offensive. Stand with the exhausted Americans, feel their terror and dread as they defend against the onslaught. All this is accomplished through numerous first hand accounts, told by the participants. The book is complete with many maps and numerous photographs of the participants. Most of the photos are from the authors personal collection.

I have traveled with Will Cavanagh and listened to his lectures. No one knows this history better.

4 out of 5 stars Close-Up View of Frontier Life .......2007-06-09

While there have been many books written about the settlement of the American West, relatively few of them have been first-person accounts. And though I had never heard of Fifty Years on the Old Frontier or its author until a recent visit to the Nebraska State Park which occupies the site of James Cook's old Agate Springs Ranch, after reading I came to the conclusion that Cook's book is one of those that are essential reading for anyone who wants a fairly unbiased close-up view of frontier life.
Though Cook came to the Plains and to the West as a relatively uneducated greenhorn, by the end of his life he had developed into a man of much empirical knowledge and understanding. His writing style is not at all dry and the reader will find Cook to be a very engaging writer whose observations are leavened with a wry humor that makes him want to finish the book in one sitting.
Maybe I like it so much because I've been to all the places of which he writes and I can visualize the countryside as I read along. Cook was a real polymath as far as practical living went, and his abilities served him well in an environment which demanded so much of every person. I enjoy most his stories of the cattle drives as he learned the hard way how to be a cowboy, and those of his time as a ranch manager in Southwestern New Mexico, a country I know well. But I also enjoy reading of his interactions with the leaders of the Plains Indians, many of whom saw in Cook a kindred spirit.
Cook's life in the west spanned the period from when the Central Plains and the Southwest were first being settled and everything was wide open, to the time where everything was settled, fenced-in, and criscrossed with railways and highways. He saw the buffalo, the antelope, and the grizzly nearly eliminated and he saw the Indians go from being masters of the Plains to being reduced to living on puny reservations and reliant on the whim of the white man for basic necessities. He writes of this with wisdom gained through hard experience, balance, and a tinge of sadness for the passing of the old days and the old ways.
If you love the West and would like an authentic, unvarnished look at the way it once was, then this book is for you. Judging by the sales ranking on amazon, it appears to have been almost forgotten. Many thanks to the University of Oklahoma Press for keeping it alive.

4 out of 5 stars One Man's Realities in the American Old West.......2003-06-03

James Cook's "Fifty Years on the Old Frontier" is an autobiographical narrative of his life experiences in the American West. Cook's endeavors during the latter part of the 19th century and early part of the 20th century encompassed a whole host of occupations: cattle drover, tour guide, hunter, rancher, and military scout. Cook eventually married into money and retired to a ranch near Agate, Nebraska where he consorted with Red Cloud and other old Sioux warriors. He also collaborated with several university professors on fossil digs located around his ranch, eventually becoming an amateur scientist in his own right. Cook's accounts of his adventures in the Old West provide a compelling insight about the realities and myths of America's movement across the North American continent. James Cook died in 1942.

The beginning chapters of the book outline the author's work as a cattle popper and drover along the old cattle trails through Texas and Kansas. The dangers that threatened the well being of these tough as nails trail hands constitutes the bulk of Cook's narrative. What quickly becomes apparent is that these guys were not the dapper dandies we see in films and fiction; they worked hard everyday to get those longhorns up to Kansas and to the railroad. Cook recounts the disagreements amongst drovers, an experience with hail and a tornado, stampedes, the threat of wild animals, and the dangers posed by Indians. A separate chapter discusses the fate of the wild mustangs, yet another sad chapter in the annals of the conquest of the West. Once the businessmen moved in and discovered a market for horses, they rounded up the mustangs by the thousands through crude trapping techniques and by depriving Indians of their stocks. Horses injured in the process were ruthlessly shot by the trappers. The picture that emerges from the author's narrative about trail life is one of greedy exploitation leading to environmental damage.

Relations with Indians are a central theme of the book. The movie image of tremendous battles between natives and American military forces does not find expression in this story. Instead, Cook portrays Indians as just another obstacle to the settlement of the West. Cattle drivers had to pay attention to Indian raiders who sought to steal horses and cattle, but it was more important to worry about weather and stampedes. In the last section of the book, Indians play a bigger role in the story. The author outlines in detail his relationship with the Sioux after they had been confined to the reservation. Another chapter deals with the Geronimo uprising in New Mexico, an incident Cook experienced first hand during his tenure as a ranch manager in the area. He takes the opportunity of the uprising to tell the truth about the Indians and the military forces during the campaign. According to the author, Geronimo and his Apache warriors did not fight the military head on, but relied on hit and run tactics with strategic retreats to Mexico to stay one step ahead of the law. The military relied heavily on scouts, often mixed blood Indians, in order to track down the rogue Indians. Geronimo eventually surrendered when an army officer talked him into giving himself up.

Cook's interest in the West is not a broad picture of western history, but rather groupings of anecdotes about his individual experiences in the area. The reader often has to read between the lines of these engaging stories in order to ascertain the reality of the situation on the frontier. For example, Cook discusses in depth the time the Sioux on the reservation asked him to be their government appointed agent. The author provides several letters of endorsement written on his behalf by politicians and bankers in Nebraska and Wyoming. The letters praise Cook as a man of the West on excellent terms with the local Indian population. A cynic can see the larger dynamic tensions between East and West in these letters. The locals want one of their own in the job because up to this point the position was always held by someone from back east. Moreover, a western agent could deliver lucrative supply contracts to western businesses and perform favors for western politicians. Why else would bankers take the time to write a recommendation letter to the government? It certainly had little to do with goodwill towards the Sioux Indians, especially since this wheedling went on at roughly the same time as the Ghost Dance fiasco.

I am astonished that no one else has reviewed this book. This is a great text for the Old West history buff or those interested in Indian/White relations during the late 19th century. James Cook's "Fifty Years on the Old Frontier" is an entertaining, yet at some times sad, account of the realities of our frontier days.

4 out of 5 stars Rational Science vs Religious True Believers.......2004-09-12

Although expressing a respect for spirituality, the author is using his explanations of the main discoveries of science as a springboard to contrast the value of an empirical, rational mode of knowing things in opposition to reliance on true belief. Sagan has warned that we do not live in a scientific age as evidenced by so many persons expressing belief in supernatural beings or unsubstantiated claims. This book continues in that vein with some clear thinking about the differences between ways of knowing. There is not much here to attract fundamentalist believers in "the word of God" or other such authoritarian sources. Laidler has no time for careless thinking and offers example after example of the value and need for an empirical approach to knowledge generation. The opinions of postmodern deconstructionists are severely dismissed as are also the irrationalities offered in the world of politics. His comparison between adversarial vs judicial knowledge seeking is particularly apt and especially interesting as he lumps the scientific in with the judicial.

There are more complete discussions about science for the non-scientist than within this slender volume but the focus on how we know things is of special value. He is probably lecturing to the choir and those who need to read the book are not likely to stay with it!
