Book Description
So you've got a copy of iMovie HD and iDVD 5, a camcorder, and plenty of footage—but how do you get all this video footage into a watchable movie? Maybe you don't want to spend a lot of time learning all the ins and outs of the software, but just want to get your movie finished. Realizing that many users won't want to waste a single minute reading about all they can do with iMovie and iDVD, best-selling author Jeff Carlson cuts straight to the chase, using simple project-based instruction and big, colorful screen shots to guide them through the process of making their first movie on an interactive DVD. By focusing on that first project, rather than exploring every option and feature, Jeff demonstrates the quickest, easiest, smartest route to cinematic success. Each short lesson builds on the last as users learn how to shoot, edit, and produce their own movies and then distribute them on DVDs to share with friends, family, and colleagues.

too little.......2005-08-15
Geez. The book contains too little info and immediately tells you to buy other books in the series.
Careful, this is not a Quick Start guide.......2005-06-02
The book you probably want is: iMovie HD and iDVD 5 for Mac OS X : Visual QuickStart Guide. This is the Quick Project guide. The total content of this book would fit on 3 pieces of paper. So why did I give it four stars? It's beautiful, not very expensive, and it does provide the key information you need to actually produce a decent DVD.
It's simply that it's rather sparse. I ordered it by mistake; I thought I was getting the Visual QuickStart guide. I didn't bother returning it because:
1. it's not a bad book, I'll give it to a friend
2. it's not worth the hassle to return.
All the same, be sure you don't really want the QuickStart guide instead -- that series has much more material in it.

Book Description
The application of biologically-engineered solutions to environmental problems has become far more readily acceptable and widely understood. However there remains some uncertainty amongst practitioners regarding how and where the microscopic, functional level fits into the macroscopic, practical applications. It is precisely this gap which the book sets out to fill.
- Dividing the topic into logical strands covering pollution, waste and manufacturing, the book examines the potential for biotechnological interventions and current industrial practice, with the underpinning microbial techniques and methods described, in context, against this background.
- Each chapter is supported by located case studies from a range of industries and countries to provide readers with an overview of the range of applications for biotechnology.
Essential reading for undergraduates and Masters students taking modules in Biotechnology or Pollution Control as part of Environmental Science, Environmental Management or Environmental Biology programmes. It is also suitable for professionals involved with water, waste management and pollution control.
Download Description
"Biotechnology has come to play an increasingly important role in many aspects of everyday life. Once an expensive and largely unfamiliar option, it has now become a realistic alternative to many established approaches for manufacturing, land remediation, pollution control and waste management. The application of biologically-engineered solutions to environmental problems has become far more readily acceptable in principle and biotechnology, in general, more widely understood, but there remains some uncertainty amongst practitioners regarding how and where the microscopic, functional level fits into the macroscopic, practical applications. It is precisely this gap which the book sets out to fill. Environmental Biotechnology: theory and application takes a thematic and environmentally focused approach, and breaks away from traditional rigid divisions to provide a unified exposition of the subject and an accurate reflection of environmental biotechnology in current practice. Dividing the topic into logical strands covering pollution, waste and manufacturing, the book examines the potential for biotechnological interventions and current industrial practice, with the underpinning microbial techniques and methods described, in context, against this background. Each chapter is supported by located case studies from a range of industries and countries to provide readers with an overview of the range of applications for biotechnology. Book Description
The Solvay Councils, called since 1911 by the eminent Belgian industrialist Ernest Solvay, have had a major impact on the birth and development of modern physics, especially quantum and nuclear physics.
This book tells this story through the lively presentation of the reports and warm debates taking place in what Einstein called a "witches Sabbath". It introduces the reader to the very content of the discussions and the general context in physics and society.
Most of the contributions were presented at an international Colloquium held in Brussels in 1995, which extends the content of a first edition of this book, published in French. The book is abundantly illustrated, including numerous original documents.

Book Description
Amy was barely born with a spoon in her mouth let alone a silver one. Her mother abandoned her before her first birthday and her father, a small-time crook, was in jail more time than he was out. Raised by her flaky and slightly felonious grandmother, Amy worked hard and managed to get scholarships to boarding school, then Harvard, then the Columbia School of Journalism. But now -- a few years into her stint as a reporter for a prestigious magazine -- she doesn't know who she is or how to connect with the world. Seeking answers, she sets out to find the mother she never knew...and maybe a place to belong.
Customer Reviews:
Random political tirades.......2007-04-12
I really did not enjoy this book. The heroine comes across as exactly what she fears she may seem to her ex-boyfriend: emotionally cold. I could not at all identify with her, nor feel for her.
It was slow going until the plot even remotely captured me. The storyline about the politician and his illegitimate child seemed forced, and an annoying distraction from the main character's own story.
Most of all, though, I was annoyed by all that needless political tirades that seemed angry and out-of-place. France and Germany have sunk to "second rate" countries - what does that mean? Just because they do not agree with the Iraq war? "Second rate" how exactly? And since when is ALL of Europe blaming the Jews for EVERYTHING? That is so trite and superficial. And of course the stereotypes. The German journalist is a sturdy stocky middle-aged lesbian, and the French one wears f...-me shoes everywhere, even in rougher territory. Oh please!
Any Place I Hang My Hat: A Novel.......2007-01-31
It took several chapters for this book to engage me. Once I dropped into the rhythm of the story I enjoyed the contemporary setting, keen wit, quirky mental asides and frequent subplot references to Grandmother's proper use of etiquette. An enjoyable romance novel with good character development, enough tension and humor to keep an active mind interested as well as intelligent enough to hold the attention of a non-romance reader.
Worth the Read.......2007-01-23
This book introduced me to Susan Isaacs, and it's still my favorite. This is a lovely story of finding oneself, of negotiating past and family and self. It's funny and touching. The emotions are restrained and therefore more powerful. I found it an extremely satisfying read.
Not a BAD book, but...........2006-11-07
This book isn't bad. It's a perfect light read for when you're tired and don't want to think.
That said, it's a bit too glib. I started to feel as if the main character didn't have much good to say about anybody -- and if that's what being a hip New Yorker's about, I think I'll pass. Also, there were times when her description was intrusive, and a couple of scenes that could have been cut without any pain.
A nice bit of fluff. I don't see myself thinking about it all now that I'm done, though.
Dull, Dull, Dull.......2006-11-07
This was the first Susan Isaacs novel I've read and it will probably be the last. I felt the author was trying to be funny throughout the book--and failing miserably. The main character was boring, the ending managed to be both predictable and implausible, and the whole book was utterly forgettable. Maybe Isaacs has done better, but judging from Any Place I Hang My Hat, I don't get the hype about her.
Book Description
German defenses along the Normandy beaches were part of the larger Atlantic Wall fortifications designed to defend Fortress Europe. When Field Marshal Erwin Rommel took command of the invasion front in late 1943, he began a program to enhance fortifications along the Normandy coast as he believed that any Allied assault had to be stopped on the invasion beaches themselves. His most important contribution to the defenses was an extensive program of improvised beach obstructions to complicate any landing attempt. This book analyses these fortifications and describes how the Allied forces overcame them on the morning of June 6, 1944.
Customer Reviews:
A Superb Synthesis.......2006-06-07
Although there are a lot of books out there about D-Day and the German Atlantic Wall defenses, Stephen J. Zaloga's D-Day Fortifications in Normandy is a welcome addition. As usual, Zaloga is able to synthesize a great deal of useful information about a well-known subject and still produce a book that has insightful and original material. Zaloga has mined the best available English, German and French sources and these are listed in an excellent 2-page bibliography. Overall, this volume is one of the best of Osprey's Fortress series. I have been to Normandy and seen many of the fortifications that Zaloga writes about, yet I still managed to learn new facts about them in this volume.
Zaloga begins the volume with a well-written summary of the design and development of the German army and navy coastal defenses in Normandy. He manages to include a number of interesting facts, including nice-to-know items like the cost of construction. The next section deals with the actual defenses in detail, including a table that lists all strongpoints on the five D-Day beaches and another table that lists all artillery units in range of the beaches. Zaloga also provides great detail on the garrison, including mentioning individual German commanders in various bunkers. The final section on the defenses on D-Day, which covers beach-by-beach, is superb. Throughout, the volume is enhanced with an excellent mix of B/W photos from 1944 and modern color photos. Zaloga also provides excellent detailed color maps for each beach sector, which depict all the key German defenses. The color plates are also very good, depicting various types of German coastal bunkers. Overall, this volume delivers a great deal of well-packaged information for its small size.
The only item that I would disagree with is his assessment that, "the German defenses quickly failed when assaulted by Allied forces on D-Day." It is currently in vogue among many military historians to deride fixed fortifications like the Atlantic Wall as a `white elephant,' but this ignores their intended purpose. Although Rommel hoped to defeat the invasion on the beaches, it was the reserve troops who were supposed to deliver the decisive blow; the coastal defenses were merely intended to delay and disrupt the invaders long enough for the German reserves to deploy. As Zaloga notes, thirty Germans in WN 62 on Omaha Beach were able to inflict hundreds of casualties on the US 1st Infantry Division and to hold out for over six hours. In the British sector, the Hillman bunker complex prevented the British from getting into Caen on D-Day. By and large, the German beach defenses did their job admirably, inflicting several thousand casualties on the Allies and preventing the Allies from reaching many of their D-Day objectives. It was the German C2 errors that prevented a rapid and decisive commitment of mobile reserves that led to failure, not the concept of fixed fortifications. Furthermore, critics of the German Atlantic Wall rarely make any effort to suggest plausible alternatives for a resource-strapped Germany in 1944. The German defenses in Normandy were a good example of `economy of force' and not only were they useful on D-Day, but they helped to slow the Allied drive to capture ports like Cherbourg weeks after the invasion.
Fantastic.......2006-03-04
I can say no more except the book is a must for those interested in the invasion of Normandy.
THE BOOK TO GET!!!.......2006-02-13
This is the book to get is you want to know details on the Atlantic Wall fortifications in Normandy. It has just about everything one could want to know about how the Germans defended Normandy during the invasion. Excellent and well illustrated work. Highly recommended for all those interested in World War II.
Book Description
Expertly researched, it is the only book focused on the subject. Was it merely a propaganda device, or was it truly a defensive system of considerable proportions? The answers to these questions should help us derive a better understanding of Germany's western defensive system.
Customer Reviews:
Same as the old edtion, little fort detail.......2006-02-13
This is basically an updated version, but is mainly a history with little description of the various types of fortifications that made up the great German defensive barrier.
A very good overview of Germany's strategy in the West.......2004-10-14
I decided to buy this book despite the bad critics it received and I was not disappointed. The author has a clear argument regarding the construction of the Atlantic Wall, the strategic and operational reasons behind this decision and the German command arrangements and frictions in the West. The books does not go in great lengths regarding the details but it uses the kind of first hand information that applies to me: the microfilmed archives of the Wehrmacht High Command (OKW) and a welth of other German sources. The writing style is very good albeit with a few mistakes due to bad editing and the information is presented in a very clear chronological way which captivates the reader. I had never before pay attention, for example, to von Rundsetdt's 50 pages report of October 23, 1944 and the consequences of his estimations, nor had I read in such a clear form about the German plans and moves regarding the possible Allied attacks in Portugal, Spain and Southern France. Although very few pages are devoted to the actual operations of the D-Day landings, the subsquent Normandy campaign and the 15 August landings in the French Mediterranean coast, and almost none to the Allied planning and intentions, I think that Alan Wilt has made clear his point that Atlantic Wall did achieve a part of his objective by keeping the Allies out of the important Atlantic ports and thus causing the great logistics crisis of September 1944. "The Atlantic Wall" is a very good book which will be useful as a quick reference to anyone interested in the German strategy in the West during the 1940-44 period. The reader must be warned though that the subtitle "Rommel's plans to thwart the Allied Invasion" is rather deceptive, as Rommel is not the central figure of this study nor the only one. The book is easy to read and contains some good general maps, among them a precise map of the German order of battle in June 1944 and although it does not avoid a few reptitions along the way, it is worth the money.
Disappointing and dull.......2004-06-24
This book is a narrative of the plans and construction of defenses on the French coasts, both Atlantic and Mediterranean, as well as the German war plans for defending against the Allied invasion they knew was coming. The Germans did a great job of building formidable defenses for the seaports, which the Allies bypassed. Obviously, the Germans could have done a lot more to defend the Normandy beaches if they had only known the Allied plans.
The basic problem with the book is the author's fondness for the passive tense and vague rhetoric, and the lack of a theme. The maps are excellent and numerous. The writing style is smooth but the lack of specificity makes much of the book meaningless.
The book's purported theme seems to be that the Allied invasion could have failed. Given the success of the Allied deception and their total domination of the air, and given also the lack of mobility of the Germans with most bridges out and constant air attacks during the daytime, the thesis seems unlikely, or at least not supported by the facts presented in this disappointing book. The author has done a lot of research but to what end?

Forget what you were taught in school.......2001-12-26
Rife uses his facts like a matador uses his sword, deftly skewering one establishment sacred cow after another.
I can't imagine someone reading this book with anything approaching an open mind and not coming away with serious second thoughts on what we've been told about the fate of some of history's best-known characters.
The cumulative effect of all these revelations is such that I even found myself questioning the slam dunk official verdicts on Hitler and Elvis.
Book Description
This book is an essay on how people make sense of each other and the world they live in. Making sense is the activity of fitting something puzzling into a coherent pattern of mental representations that include concepts, beliefs, goals, and actions. Paul Thagard proposes a general theory of coherence as the satisfaction of multiple interacting constraints, and discusses the theory's numerous psychological and philosophical applications. Much of human cognition can be understood in terms of coherence as constraint satisfaction, and many of the central problems of philosophy can be given coherence-based solutions. Thagard shows how coherence can help to unify psychology and philosophy, particularly when addressing questions of epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, politics, and aesthetics. He also shows how coherence can integrate cognition and emotion.
