Managing Software Maniacs is a light, sometimes humorous guide to managing software development teams. It assumes that readers are either already development team managers or on the way to becoming them. Author Ken Whitaker begins by explaining his ideal order of the team leader's priorities and how to get them straight. Once everyone's goals are in line, Whitaker proposes methods for recruiting the best additions to your team, sharpening your own skills as a leader, establishing good scheduling practices, and coping with unforeseen forces, such as intraoffice dynamics and the dreaded marketing department.
Each chapter is peppered with "Practical Maniac Tips" (there's even a "maniac" icon), "Reality Checks" to keep you focused, and "Rules for the Unruly" to keep your more "unique" team members from causing too much trouble.
Book Description
Using a humorous yet practical style, it offers excellent advice on every aspect of programmer management. Topics range from finding software developers, rewarding them and building an effective team.

Loved it.......2000-04-14
Ken's insights proved very useful in my research (we reference it in our latest AntiPatterns book). I especially enjoyed Ken's take on the popular "cubicles" versus offices debate. I recommend this as one of the many books software managers should read.
Developer's eye view of Managing Software Maniacs.......1998-02-02
After reading this book there was only one thing I took away with me. Ken Whitaker's ideal priority list for making decisions. His discussion on the why is most illuminating.
The rest of the book is somewhat wooly. I felt that for my needs (looking to move to technical lead) Rapid Development was a more worthwhile read.

Book Description
This handbook summarizes the main advances in our understanding of marine minerals and concentrates on the deposits of proven economic potential. In cases where our knowledge may be too limited to allow defining of their economic potential, those minerals are covered regionally or by deposit type. Handbook of Marine Mineral Deposits is divided into three sections; Marine placers, manganese nodules and crusts, and deep-sea hydrothermal mineralization. All of these mineral deposits have great potential importance to economic geologists and marine mines. Edited by an acknowledged expert in the field, this handbook includes work by internationally renowned contributors. The new United Nations Law of the Sea, ratified by over 100 countries within the past two years, provides a framework and guidelines for deep-sea mineral exploration that increases international interest in this book. The Handbook serves as a platform from which to launch the more detailed evaluation studies that will need to take place in the 21st century before recovery can continue or commence. Handbook of Marine Mineral Deposits is useful to mineralogists, economic geologists, marine geologists, marine miners, and conservationists. Features

call her crazy
With half her immediate family having been committed -- mentally speaking -- why can't Chloe Sachs commit? After all, she's always been considered the sane one in the family. But seconds before becoming Mrs. Mark Hutchinson, Chloe leaves her handsome, successful fiancé at the altar and tears down Interstate 505 in her red Ford Frontier. Maybe it was the heat of a California June wedding. Maybe it was when a family tradition went awry before hundreds of shocked guests. Or maybe it was because she heard a voice telling her in no uncertain terms, Run!
but just call her...
Now Chloe has no Plan B, two kooky dogs, one angry ex, and a truckload of wedding gifts to return. Taking refuge at her grandmother's, Chloe helps her renovate a bungalow that's been in the family for years -- and unearths some surprising secrets. She also discovers that leaving her heart open may invite some very intriguing guests -- like the beguiling veterinarian she can't get off her mind. And with her family and friends' help, Chloe realizes she's truly free...to follow her heart wherever it takes her.

Hilarious and Heart Warming.......2006-08-25
This is chick lit story about a runaway bride. Chloe gets a bad feeling at her wedding and runs away. She moves into her grandmothers house while she's supposed to be on her honeymoon to sort things out.
It's a story about real issues, self discovery, self distructive behavior, and family dynamics.
Chloe makes a hard journey of self discovery and begins to understand the mistakes she was making in her life. She's strong enough to correct mistakes that can be passed down from generation to generation.
I'm looking forward to reading more of Rendahl's novels.
Not Lit For Your Average Chick.......2006-08-16
Eileen's writing style appeals to a vast variety of ages (unlike many other books of similar genre on the market now days). Her words are easy to devour into the night, like your favorite ice cream, and just as delicious. The male characters are always a treat as well. Her writing style is very fluid and paints a nice image as you read. Her plot is refreshing and her characters are the kind of people you either know, or would love to know.
Another great one from Eileen. Can't wait for the next!
Unbridaled.......2006-08-14
A great story about finding one's self. Everyone has skeletons in the closets and finding out about your family's help to reveal more about yourself.
Good Chick Lit.......2006-08-13
UN-BRIDALED by Eileen Rendahl
August 12, 2006
Rating *** ½
While a lot of Chick Lit seems to be mediocre, this was not the case with UN-BRIDALED. It is Chloe Sach's wedding, and when her soon-to-be husband, Mark Hutchinson, tries to break the glass in the napkin by stepping on it during the ceremony, she freaks when the glass does not break, but shoots out of the napkin and flies across the room. Voices in her head tell Chloe to do only one thing - run! And she does. She runs away from the wedding and goes into hiding.
Now, Chloe needs to deal with the aftermath of what she's just done. She knows she doesn't want to be married to Mark, but she hasn't really figured out why. What she does realize is that no one else is upset about the turn of events, except for Mark and his mother. She no longer has a place to live, so she ends up moving into her grandmother's deceased sister's (Aunt Laura) old cottage. It's a quaint little place, and Chloe helps her grandmother renovate it. In the process she meets Etienne, a very disgusting French man (he is not what she envisioned him to be) and his nephew Tucker, who are hired to redo the cottage. They are one of numerous characters that supply the humor in the story.
She also now has two dogs, because Mark did not want to keep poor Aziza, the dog he took in to be a companion to Jesse, Chloe's dog. When Chloe notices that Jesse has started to limp, Chloe takes him to the local vet and meets the very good-looking Doctor Daniel Stein. The two are definitely attracted to each other and a potential romance begins.
Still in a funk from the "un-wedding", Chloe knocks down a kitchen wall in a fit of rage and discovers a metal box. Inside are love letters from a man named Jesse to her Aunt Laura. This opens up a slew of questions, which her grandmother refuses to answer. In fact, she becomes agitated. It is one of the few times Chloe and her grandmother have argued. Chloe knows there's a story behind the love letters, and she won't give up until she finds out what it is.
UN-BRIDALED is a chick lit book that has something for everybody. It has humor, a lot of crazy antics from the main character, a potential love interest, and a mystery that will have the reader intrigued until it is solved. While Chloe was a somewhat exasperating heroine who wasn't sure what she wanted, there are other important characters in the book that balance her out. There is Clarissa, Chloe's best friend who also happens to be a lesbian. Then there is Rafe, Chloe's brother and Lily, their mother, who was absent emotionally and physically while they grew up, as well as in their adult life. Chloe always felt that Lily never loved her the way a mother loves a child. For some reason Lily treats Chloe like dirt. It was their grandmother that helped raise the two, and so Chloe had more of a bond with their grandmother than with anyone else. Their father was living in Florida with a young wife and he didn't seem to have any real connection with either of them, so Rafe and Chloe were pretty much "stuck" with their grandmother, because it didn't seem as if their parents were interested in them.
While at first UN-BRIDALED seemed to be a typical chick lit story, it was deeper than that as the reader will see. Chloe goes through a lot of soul searching, and questions her family background as she tries to understand who the mystery man Jesse is. She knows his existence is important to the family, yet her grandmother refuses to explain his story. Chloe also has questions about her relationship with her mother, wondering why her mother didn't seem to love her. It comes as a shock when Chloe finally finds the letter that explains who Jesse is, and it changes everything. It answers so many questions, giving Chloe closure and understanding. The reader will also shed a number of tears before the book is over, with scenes that round out the story and bring everyone together.
Overall, this reviewer enjoyed UN-BRIDALED as an above average chick lit novel. It had enough going for it that will keep one interested until the very last page. Crazy characters, interesting plot, and the type of story that doesn't come across as the typical shallow chick-lit novel. UN-BRIDALED comes recommended. - courtesy of Loveromancesandmore
Great summer and book club read!.......2006-05-05
I have read all of Eileen Rendahl's books and have found each one moving and entertaining all in one. Un-Bridaled is for anyone that has experienced life going a different direction than "as planned" (and who hasn't?). The use of humor and interesting characters kept me interested until the very end. A perfect book to go on a summer vacation with!

WOW!.......2005-08-07
I bought this book counting on it being an entertaining read, and to study tactics but not expecting this much information. This book covers all crucial aspects of launching a successful insurgency. It will take you from the beginning planning stages to overthrowing an oppressive regime. I am now up to page 75 in this book, and so far I have read details on how to plan your operation, intelligence gathering, getting the locals on your side, direct and indirect support, engaging in fires, mobility, establishing an OP and LP, and assaults on enemy positions. If you want to wage a war, this book is for you. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.
This book has more than enough information to get you started on the path to having a successful insurgent operation. Note that no matter how much you study the topic of waging an unconventional war, it is nothing like actual experience. I would rate this book VERY HIGH on the "Must Read" list for anyone even remotely interested in small unit operations. If I had to give an on line abbreviation for this book, it would be this: T.M.I.
Yes!.......2003-03-15
Wow... this book is DEFINITELY for Academic study ONLY! This book DETAILS the U.S. Army's Special Force's ability to Train, Organize and Equip Rag tag people into a fighting unit, double quick time.
Unlike many "manuals" this one not only covers Small unit tactics and training, but also covers setting up intelligence, conducting Psy-ops and then organizing a working political system. This is important to long term success, since it saves you from having to re-fight the same battles over and over.
The book walks you through the staging and completion of the first acts of Rebellion all the way up to "Overthrow". It'll definitely point you in directions for further research!

Book Description
How do the concepts “border,” “exile,” and “diaspora” shape individual and group identities across cultures? Taking this question as a point of departure, this wide-ranging volume explores the ways that people create and represent a home away from home. Throughout, the authors emphasize the multiple subjectivities, cultural displacements, and identity politics that have characterized the postcolonial and post-World War II eras. They simultaneously affirm and challenge previous understandings of these three terms, and they investigate their malleability—the extent to which they apply to diverse communities.
Once the idea of diaspora is dissociated from the historical experiences of a particular group of people, it becomes a universal designation, applicable to all displaced groups. This understanding of diaspora also allows for the creation of a “nonnormative” intellectual community, one experienced by many contemporary critics and with which they identify. In the postcolonial context, a global “middle voice” emerges that incorporates the critic and his or her identity as the participant-observer of the discourses on identity. As personal narratives transcend the autobiographical, they become indispensable guarantors of a free theoretical field, without a priori boundaries. The diaspora’s voice is thus national and cultural, but it lacks the nation or the geographical definition that would constrain its subject.
The essays in this volume approach the ideas of border, exile, and diaspora primarily as subjects of literary representations while recognizing the political stakes of diasporic identity. They synthesize the poetic with the political, but they also probe the existential consequences of displacement and cultural dislocation. The essays compel us to examine, within a dialogical complex, antagonistic but concurrent phenomena endowed with a new internal logic. This volume serves as a canvas representing the open-ended, discontinuous, and syncretic nature of the postmodern world. Rather than give definitive answers, the essays provide contingent responses to the myriad questions about culture, identity, and language embedded in modern history.

Book Description
Somewhere on this earth tonight, somewhere, I believe, not very far from me, there is a person whose heart I’ve touched. A person whose heart I’ve held in my hand. . . .
So begins
A Man After His Own Heart, an extraordinary narrative by acclaimed author, essayist, and poet Charles Siebert on that most elusive of topics--the human heart. On a rainy December night one recent winter, Siebert was given the rare opportunity to accompany a team of surgeons both in the harvesting of a human heart from the body of a young woman who'd recently died of a brain aneurysm, and in the subsequent delivery and implantation of that heart into the hollowed-out chest of a waiting recipient.
Beginning with his harrowing week-long wait for the harvest call to come and culminating with the moment in which one of the implant surgeons suddenly, inexplicably, places the author’s hand on the wildly beating reanimated heart, Siebert manages to weave a seamless series of ruminations and reflections about his own obsession with the heart and his often-estranged father's fatal heart disease; about history's ongoing fascination with this most central and vital organ; and about modern science’s latest startling discoveries concerning both the heart's biological origins and its long-intuited role in the play of our emotions. The resulting mix is nothing less than a radically new, definitive biography of life's most pondered and poeticized protagonist. This story is a journey into the literal and figurative heart of our being, revealing the previously unexplored ways in which the matter of modern science and timeless metaphor meet.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful and Lyrical.......2006-03-25
Charles Siebert's book is stunningly beautiful and wonderfully lyrical in its prose, its focus and its intent to communicate Mr. Siebert's quest. As a man who lost his father at a too-young age, and frets about his own mortality, this book struck home like a scalpel, peeling back layers of emotion within myself. Be prepared for an intimate journey into Mr. Siebert's spiritual and actual heart, and into your own.
Heartfelt.......2004-12-16
I finally had the chance to read this book, which has been sitting on my night table for a while. Some books are easily forgettable - sometimes you can't even remember if you've read it or not. That is not the case with this beautifully written memoir - it has evoked feelings in me that remain strong even though a few weeks have passed. My father had an aortic valve replacement last year, and I've had my own episodes of arrhythmia and tachycardia, so I felt a real connection with both the science and emotion regarding the heart. The personal recollections are both honest and real, and kept me wanting more. It's such a delight to find a writer who is courageous enough to let the readers in for a glimpse into his personal relationships.
Science and Society.......2004-07-08
I am a very enthusiastic reader of medical memoirists such as Nuland, Solomon, and Seltzer, and after reading A Man After His Own Heart I'd place Siebert immediately in the same company, and a step better for the exceptional writing. These authors act as literary mediators between the general readership and science and health, where cultural myths and the obscurity of technical information cloud essential understanding of our bodies and ourselves, and ultimately of our own mortality, and perhaps worse, how our genetics may be used to marginalize us and our families. With all the personal pain and difficulty, struggling with the death of a father, and perhaps a genetic death sentence, Siebert, as a journalist, connects in a Whitmanesque way with people all over America suffering from heart disease, in its variants. Reading Siebert's book put me in mind of how critical it is to find a link between science and society, and how desperately we need such gifted authors.
Heart and Soul.......2004-06-27
Never have scientific and personal oddysseys been so deftly woven into whole cloth. Charles Siebert has allowed us to share a personal journey motivated by emotion but marked by intellectual discovery. Apparently, Mr. Seibert is a poet as well as a writer of prose, and his lyricism transforms material that might otherwise be drily academic into the stuff of poetry. And what better subject than the heart? The center, presumably, of our emotional life as well as the focus of complex science and medicine. All of this takes place in this book within the vehicle of a heart transplant operation, which provides a narrative movement that keeps the reader turning the pages. On the path of this riveting account of the writer's personal experience with a heart transplant team, there are surreal landscapes humanized by the characters embodying the scientific and medical details as well as personal landscapes, including Mr. Siebert's confrontations and reconciliations with his own heart and his father's failing heart, all vivified by factual understanding. The special effects in this book are real, making the reader see that knowledge is the true landscape of the imagination. Science has long been seen as the enemy of the spirit; here is one writer who marries the two with astounding results. Artificial hearts, transplanted hearts, broken hearts, and loving hearts: anyone with a heart will love this book.
So close...........2004-05-10
This book is beautifully written. After finding out about my own congenital heart 'irregularity' I was very interested in the topic. I was engrossed in the story and descriptions about his Father, his siblings, and his own confrontation with his heart 'problems'. I read the book in a day and about 2/3 of the way through I became disappointed. The story shifts from his personal landscape to the 'heart history' he researched in London and to the medical procedure he witnesses. I kept reading, hoping he would deliver the emotional lessons he learned about his own heart or about himself or about his relationship with his Father. But he did not. In the end his beautiful words eclipsed the meaning.

Book Description
In its 1994 collective opinion, Radiation Protection Today and Tomorrow, the NEA Committee on Radiation Protection and Public Health (CRPPH) concluded that societal participation in the decision-making process is becoming increasingly important. This was seen as particularly true in the case of decisions involving complex radiological situations such as those following a nuclear or radiological accident (for example, the Chernobyl accident, or fallout from atomic bomb testing in the Marshall Islands), other long-lasting exposures (such as areas contaminated by uranium mill tailings). In order to explore this issue further, the CRPPH organised a workshop in January 1998 on the societal aspects of decision making in complex radiological situations. At the workshop - which was hosted in Villigen, Switzerland, by the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (HSK) - participants concluded that it is no longer possible to take decisions in such situations without a transparent process involving the public from a very early stage. This decision-making process, which is described herein, was also seen as being valuable for other situations, such as the siting of high-level nuclear waste repositories. Recommendations for follow-up by the CRPPH are also presented.
