Maran Illustrated Yoga 05.......2007-10-04
I am very pleased with my purchase. I am new to yoga and found that videos go too fast for me and don't explain the postures and purpose of the poses enough. I can't afford continual classes (which would be great), so instead I took a 2 week series of 10 EASY classes and then bought this book. And I understand yoga poses, finally.
I recommend the classes first because the book doesn't use the same Sanskrit names for poses as they did in class (or even all the same English translations). However, the book thoroughly explains each posture and even has arrows over the photos to show which body parts should be pushing (EXTREMELY helpful for me!!). And each pose gets 3-4 photos detailing the progression of the body. Some Photoshop work also shows movement. The photos are wonderfully easy to understand.
The front section of the book has some brief historical and breathing info- not great but better than nothing. The back has some very useful sequences to follow that continually reference page numbers for correct pose posture (another stellar feature). I follow these sequences at my own painfully slow pace, constantly referencing posture pages for when to exhale and when to inhale and how to hold my shoulders, etc. Its great to have all that info in one place. This is a great way to learn yoga without being rushed.
I also looked at "Hatha Yoga Illustrated" in the store and while it had names I recognized and some basic poses, I determined much of it was too advanced for me. I think the Maran book does a better job covering a ton of poses and correct posturing and breathing, even if it doesn't names all the poses right.
Great for beginner yoga teachers and students.......2007-01-08
This book has wonderful photographs as well as proper instructions on how to perform breathing exercises as well as Asanas. I use it to help guide me during the classes I teach with adults. I wonderful and practical book.
Invigorating!.......2006-03-03
My husband and I are trying to find something else other than swimming as an exercise. We swim often but with two preschoolers, it is hard to get moving in the mornings and out of the house to the local pool. We discovered this book and now we can practice yoga in the comfort of our own home. And it's fascinating and informative and let's say, invigorating!
I am new to Yoga. I have heard of it. But like a lot of people, I don't think it's "real exercise." I know, I know. I discovered that after we've done so many stretches and poses ~~ that it's actually exercise AND better yet, I've been sleeping a lot better since we've taken up yoga!
This book is beautifully photographed and the instructions are clear and precise. They are also easy to follow. What is even more helpful is at the back they have guides that you can follow ~~ like beginner practice 1, beginner practice 2, and so on. And every pose has a description of what it does and what it is for. It is extremely helpful to a novice like me!
My husband owns another yoga book and we both prefer this one over the other! If you're looking for something to supplement your exercise regimen, this book would be an excellent start!

Yoga for Everyone.......2005-10-06
"Health is wealth. Peace of mind is happiness. Yoga shows the way." ~Swami Vishnu-Devananda
Maran Illustrated Yoga is a complete introduction to yoga postures and styles of yoga. Whether you are interested in Bhakti, Hatha, Karma, Jnana or Mantra Yoga, there is something for everyone. Do you want to focus on self-discipline or mantras?
Is meditation important to you for a more relaxing lifestyle? This is the first book I've found that covers the types of yoga and then explains the variations within each discipline. So, Hatha yoga also has many styles - like Power Yoga/Ashtanga or Kundalini Yoga, both of which I've tried and enjoyed.
Yoga can improve your mood, reduce stress, improve mental functions, improve your self-confidence and reduce pain in your body. The emphasis on breathing helps to release tension from the body, while the exercises improve flexibility and strength.
New to Yoga? There is a complete list of yoga clothes and props. There is also advice on how to find a yoga class.
Highlights include:
Introduction to Yoga - explains how it started
Muscular System and Skeletal Systems- pictures
Tips for Yoga Practice
Breathing Exercises
Pictures of all the Poses with detailed instruction on the same page
While you may feel more inclined to do yoga with an instructor or while watching a video, this book will introduce you to the postures. If you have been practicing yoga for many years, you may find you can take your practice to new depths through reading the details of each pose.
Chapter 15 gives advice on how to create a personal yoga practice, complete with instructions and pictures.
This entire book is a beautiful celebration of yoga and all its varied possibilities. Highly recommended to new or experienced yogis, teachers or students.
One of the enlightening aspects of this book is it gives names for all the poses, which is wonderful if you have been looking for a detailed resource with pictures.

A fantastic book for beginners and others.......2005-05-30
I've been looking for the perfect book on yoga to give to my mother, who after a stroke finds herself able to navigate about quite well, but unable to do any kind of exercises besides walking and swimming.
After looking at a variety of yoga books (see my other reviews), this clearly is the one. I've been using it myself (just testing it out!) and want to keep one for myself - and recommend it to friends.
Why is it so good?
It is designed for all users - beginners, seniors, children and off and on yoga folks like myself.
There are full color illustrations for every move - arrows show how to get into different positions and how to get out.
Sections are divided by sitting, reclining, standing -- very nice for those who only want to do one kind of pre-stretch or yoga program (sitting, for my mother)
The front has detailed explanations and photos of each stand, divided into sections. Easy to read, great photos again with the little arrows telling users how to get from one pose to the next.
After this, there are beginner and intermediate practices using the photos. If you are supposed to be doing a Little Boat pose as part of a program, you have a little picture and an easy cross references if you need to be reminded of the details.
Nice index in the back. I'd love to see either a second version with more programs (I'm way too lazy to make my own) or a set of cards with the photos for those who travel (I'd be more likely to make out my own program with a deck of cards!)
Excellent book, worth the price.

Book Description
Comparative constitutionalism has always been an important field of study. Recently it has gained new importance, and practical urgency, with the advent of new, emerging democratic governments. As part of the study of comparative constitutionalism, federal constitutional systems have also recently taken on a renewed interest. Russia and South Africa present fascinating current examples of emerging federal systems in which sub-national constitutions are beginning to play an important role. Within the field of comparative federal constitutional law, though, the study of state or sub-national constitutions is only now becoming a major focal point of worldwide interest. Sub-national constitutions have been, and generally remain, low-visibility constitutions. Studies of constitutional federalism have tended to be almost exclusively top-down looks at the national constitution and its federal features rather than a bottom-up look at the national constitutions themselves. A system of constitutional federalism cannot be fully understood without analyzing the constitutional arrangements within the constituent units. The marketplace for the constitutional ideas generated in the laboratories of states within the federal systems is rapidly expanding worldwide. There are several dozen bona fide federal political systems in the world, as well as unitary political systems that include federal arrangements. There is a range of general questions to be asked about the constitutions of states within any federal system. The contributions to this volume, in addition to their intrinsic interest, should serve as a database for answering those questions and describing the extraordinary diversity within and among sub-national constitutions in federal systems. Moreover, each of the contributions will include the texts of a number of representative sub-national constitutions. This Volume is also an integral part of Constitutional Law in the International Encyclopaedia of Laws series, ISBN 90-6544-944-2.

Book Description
J.W. Wells seemed to be a respectable establishment, but the company now paying Paul Carpenter’s salary is, in fact, a deeply sinister organization with a mighty peculiar management team. Paul thought he was getting the hang of it—particularly when he fell head over heels for his strangely alluring colleague, Sophie—but death is never far away when you work at J.W. Wells. Our love-struck hero is about to discover that custard is definitely in the eye of the beholder. And that it really stings.
Customer Reviews:
Good, but not as great as Portable Door or In Your Dreams........2006-08-28
3 stars for people just looking for a book to read.
4 stars for those who've read the other two books and are looking for a conclusion.
I'm sure most of you reading this know already, but this is the third (and probably final) book in the adventures of Paul Carpenter. The first was Portable Door, an excellent and witty book, and the second was In Your Dreams, which was almost as good.
Portable Door was terribly funny in that you could relate to so much of what Paul was going through. In Your Dreams kind of got bogged down in the fairy? story. It was more serious, not like the lighthearted romp of Portable Door.
EAF&C isn't really that funny at all. It does have moments of witty dialogue, but not the laugh-out-loud, repeat-the-lines-to-everyone-you-know sort of dialogue. Much of it even got confusing, and the explanations for the weird happenings didn't make sense. Whereas, In Your Dreams tied all the loose ends up and explained everything (you could just see how all the events tied together and made sense), EAF&C just lost me. They start all this talk about people hiding out in custard-space, and how Sophie and this goblin were linked through it, then there was this bit about living swords, battles that didn't get fought, etc. It was just all smushed together, and didn't really form a cohesive, fun-to-read story. I mean, I still love to read about Paul and his misadventures, but I really had to make an effort to get through this one. If you've read the previous two, you'll know what I say when I just wanted to get through it to see how Sophie and Paul ended up (which is resolved, by the way).
Overall, read it if you liked the other two in the series, but if you haven't read those, start out with Portable Door and In Your Dreams. By the end of those, you will want to find out what happens to Paul and the gang, but reading EAF&C alone won't really be a completely fun experience. I guess it seems that Tom Holt was just trying to finish up with Paul so that readers would be happy. Most of his books are much better than this one.
Book Description
Offering the clearest and most comprehensive examination of the conflict that transformed the United States, the Atlas of the Civil War reveals the full dimensions of this historic confrontation. Surpassing the scope of any previously published single-volume work, this atlas pairs expert scholarship with bold mapping to vividly depict the ebb and flow of destruction and reconstruction. Divided chronologically into five sections, the Atlas of the Civil War illustrates every significant battle and military campaign while simultaneously considering the important social themes that shaped the country during the same time period. All theaters of war in which armies fought and maneuvered will be covered in detail and, marking a major departure from other atlases, this volume will devote substantial attention to the nonmilitary elements of the struggle between North and South. Maps of population, economic development, elections, transportation networks and patterns of enlistment illuminate the intersections between the home front and the battlefield, demonstrating with specially commissioned cartography that no war is fought in isolation from the rest of society. Approximately forty three-dimensional maps of terrain and troop movements add yet another unique element to this ambitious reference. Written by two esteemed Civil War historians, Kenneth Winkle and Steven Woodworth, the pithy text is accented with black and white photography and illustrations that bring key characters and settings to life. Pulitzer-prize winning author James McPherson, guides the project, setting the tone of the atlas with a foreword and five shorter essays the open each of the sections.
Customer Reviews:
Useful resource.......2007-05-27
As other reviewers have noted, there are some annoying errors in the text. However, it provides an accessible introduction to Civil War battles and maneuvers, and--as such--has some value. That said, the maps and text do not always elucidate matters so well.
For instance, the battle of Logan's Crossroads (or Mill Springs). This was nasty early battle, in which Confederate generalship was inept and Union General George Thomas began to separate himself from Union mediocrities among general officers. The map on page 98 details the larger theater, but is not illuminating, given the lack of text. The map of the battle of Logan's Crossroads itself is useful, because the text accompanying it provides enough detail to make sense of things.
On occasion, some errors creep in. The discussion of Chancellorsville speaks of Howard's 6th Corps being outflanked and "rolled up." It was, of course, the 11th Corps that was so roughly handled, with Sedgwick's 6th Corps still at Fredericksburg.
At the same time, the volume does provide context. The first section focuses on "The Coming of War," and provides intelligible background, from issues of slavery to economics to demographics. All these trends began to create tensions between north and south. Graphics helpfully portray some of these sectional differences. On pages 56-57, we see how manufacturing differed dramatically by region (in terms of number of employees in manufacturing concerns) over decades.
Each section thereafter looks at a particular year during the conflict, exploring the combat, the campaigning, the state of each government and its people, economic productivity, and so on.
The volume concludes with the aftereffects of war, including presidential elections, Reconstruction, and so on.
The book is pretty well written. Steven Woodworth is a well known and reputable Civil War historian. Kenneth Winkle, the co-author, is also a well known historian. The format is such that only a handful of pages are devoted to a particular campaign or battle, and that means that detailed treatments of major engagements does not occur. Still, as a wide-ranging, graphically rich publication, this has a useful place in the library for those who want to get a broad introduction to the Civil War.
Disappointing.......2005-12-10
At first I was impressed by the maps and graphics in this book. As I began to study the battles I am particularly interested in I was suprised to find several gross errors. For example, the section on General Steele's Camden Expedition, has the map showing Thayer's Frontier Division meeting up with Steele at Elkin's Ferry via Murfreesboro, AR. The Map did not get even close to the correct route. Thayer came down via Hot Springs and Rockport and then followed Steele's army south until he caught up with Steele near Elkins Ferry. But I am amazed that the the map shows the Battle of Poison Springs on April 18, 1864 at Princeton which is 30+ miles northeast of Camden. Poison Springs is about 10+ miles West of Camden. I have to wonder who the heck researched this information and how could they be so far off????!!! It brings the creditability of this book into serious question!!!
Digging in Depth.......2005-08-09
This book is super in so many ways - but the best is its use of
maps and other statistical displays of wealth, development, strengths and capabilities. Had this information been available to Jeff Davis and Bobby Lee - both may have deferred the southern break-away.
A slipshod production.......2005-08-09
Yes, this book contains the good things mentioned in the editorial and other reviews: broader coverage than just the campaigns, excellent introductions by James MacPherson, and many maps. However, in just a few hours perusing the book, I have found a multitude of errors and anomalies which suggest to me a lack of care in putting the book together, something I would not expect from a book bearing the Oxford imprint. Some of these are:
--on p94 the battle of Antietam is said to have occurred in 1863. Sure, misprints happens, but shouldn't one of this import be caught?
--similarly, the first sentence on p182 refers to July 1, in a context that appears to indicate that this date refers to the upcoming action, which happens to be the second day of Gettysburg, July 2!
--on p206, the article correctly speaks of an action between the ships Alabama and Kearsarge off Cherbourg, France, whereas the accompanying map shows Atlanta and Kearsarge at that location.
--In a worse example of map error, the overview map of the Vicksburg campaign on p165 shows the Yazoo and the Big Black as essentially the same river: rather than separately flowing into the Mississippi north of Vicksburg, the Yazoo is shown joining up with the Big Black and flowing with it into the Mississippi well south of Vicksburg.
--near the bottom of p302, in an example of poor editing, the phrase "sometimes wading for hours at a time" occurs redundently in two close together sentences.
--in a worse example of poor editing, Grant's actions at the end of 1862 (1st Vicksburg) are placed out of chronological order prior to his actions at the beginning of 1862 (Fort Donelson and Shiloh), so that the 1862 campaign in the west is hard to follow.
--near the bottom of p286, the text refers (in words) to "eighteen thousand percent" Confederate inflation, whereas the figure shown at the bottom of p202 says "1800 percent". I certainly hope that the writers of this book don't think these two numbers are the same.
--in what may just be a Britishism, the glossary states that soldiers found it difficult "bighting" into hardtack.
Some of these errors I noticed by merely glancing at a page; others I discovered with a closer reading. However, given that I have at most perused a few dozen pages of the book, this seems to me to be an inordinate mumber of errors, indicative of sloppy editing and perhaps a rush job to meet a deadline. You may not mind these errors, but I do, and I give you fair warning.
A fine work!.......2005-04-21
This is a very good Civil War reference Book for those wishing an acquaintenance with the broad scope of the war. James McPherson's deft style and teaching skills prepares the reader for a wonderful educational experience.
And that's what The Atlas of the Civil War is: a wonderful educational experience packaged in a large 12 x 15 inch binding. It is an educational work designed for easy reading and comprehension that can be enjoyed by the casual reader.Laying the groundwork for the coming of the war, the Atlas compartmentalizes, in two page segments , the reasons for the war going back to territorial expansion and up through the Compromise of 1850 and the spread of slavery.
Its focus on the war compartmentalizes the major campaigns as well, some occupying more than the aforementioned two pages. Various facets of the opposing forces such as organization and recruiting are examined as well and the book is generously illustrated with maps, sketches and wartime photographs.
The Atlas of the Civil War is an excellent book for one wishing an overall familiarity with the war.

Customer Reviews:
Quite good introduction.......2006-07-18
A singular description of "Earth Time" would not be helpful, as the book is really two in one. The first half is a history of the development of the (relative) geologic time scale, set largely in 19th century England. The second half is a more technical discussion of the stratigraphy of the Grand Canyon, with the book closing on a summary of radiometric dating techniques. The organization of the work is interesting; its first half covers the time scale from the Holocene back to the Precambrian, while the second half starts from the Precambrian and works its way forward.
There is a lot in this book to like, as the author wanders through the various personalities and historical set pieces that gave us the modern geologic time scale. Palmer's prose is light on tech and easy to read, and especially in the book's second half, he has a "just the facts" approach that makes it the strongest part of the book. One paragraph biographies of key individuals are sprinkled throughout the text; I found these distracting at first, but in retrospect felt they are probably more useful than a cumbersome appendix the reader would have to flip back and forth from.
The book isn't perfect, though; for instance, in the first half, the Holocene and Precambrian feel glossed over, while in the second half more attention is given to radiometric dating than equally (and perhaps more) effective biostratigraphic dating. A chapter on the "Missing Mesozoic" strata of the Grand Canyon could have gone into a little more detail about the events that caused this hiatus. These are all minor quibbles, though.
On the whole, I'd definitely recommend this book for those interested in the "meat and potatoes" of how the geologic time scale was developed; as an historical geology geek, I greatly enjoyed it.
Book Description
